Sure, you could just sweep the leaves away and call it a day. But cleaning your concrete patio is easy and doesn't take very long. And the results are worth it. Grab a bucket, sturdy deck brush and concrete cleaner so you can scrub away the winter gloom. You can also use a pressure washer. Your concrete patio will love you for it.

"It's important to use the right cleaners that won't harm your plants or grass nearby," says Andrii Gurskyi, co-founder of cleaning service HomeClean. Gurskyi recommends concrete cleaners like Zep Driveway & Concrete Cleaner or Simple Green Concrete and Driveway Cleaner, but he says natural products like vinegar and baking soda are viable options, too.

How To Disinfect Carpet https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-disinfect-carpet/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-disinfect-carpet/#respond Thu, 02 Mar 2023 15:41:04 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=520648 Carpets and rugs get pretty gross. And why wouldn't they? Their millions of tiny fibers act like a sponge, collecting dirt, pet hair, food crumbs and who knows what else. Vacuuming takes care of the visible stuff, but what about germs you can't see? Can you disinfect carpeting?

It depends on how you define disinfection, according to Allen Rathey, director of the Indoor Health Council. The technical definition comes from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Strictly speaking, Rathey says, "EPA defines disinfection of hard surfaces but not carpet." Carpets and other porous materials are just too thick and dense to completely disinfect in place.

Does that mean you're stuck with a germy carpet? Not at all. In more common usage, Rathey says disinfection can simply mean reducing germs and making your carpets more hygienic, and there are plenty of ways to accomplish that.

First, an EPA-registered disinfectant can reduce germs on carpeting, but Rathey says these can be impractical. You'd have to soak the entire carpet long enough to kill germs, he says, and the use is technically "off-label." But let's say you just have a small space to disinfect — maybe your child is sick, or your pup had an accident. In these situations, a disinfectant can be worthwhile.

Hot water extraction machines, available for rent or via a carpet-cleaning company, provide great results, but can be expensive and cumbersome to deal with. Luckily, Rathey says consumer options, like the Bissell SteamShot and the Bissell Little Green can reduce germs on carpeting, too.

Here, I'll show you how to use the Little Green ProHeat to remove dirt and germs from a carpet that has seen better days, then how to apply an EPA-registered disinfectant for a small space.

We Tried Amazon’s Mop Slippers, and They Turn Walking Into Cleaning https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/mop-slippers/ Wed, 01 Mar 2023 13:02:31 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=518426 Here at Family Handyman, we don’t play when it comes to cleaning floors. Well, now we do, thanks to these Amazon mop slippers that turn the chore of mopping floors into a dance party.

If you have hard floors throughout your home, you’ve probably searched for the best floor mops and tile floor cleaners. And while we’ve also searched high and low for implements, like the best mops for laminate floors and steam cleaners, sometimes we just want products that take the chore feeling out of tidying up. For easy and fun (yes, fun!) cleaning, products like robot vacuums and mop slippers are some of the things we reach for.

What are mop slippers?

Mop slippers are just what they sound like: slippers that do the work of a floor mop. These silly-looking accessories slip over your shoes (or socks) and work like two mini microfiber mop heads across floors. That’s right—no bending, no bucket, just slide across your floors to pick up all the dust and dander that you’d normally sweep or mop up. Because mop slippers are made of soft chenille microfiber, they’re especially good for dusting and picking up spills on hardwood floors, as well as tile, laminate and linoleum flooring.

The pack of five pairs on Amazon comes with five different colors of mop slippers, including purple, pink, green, orange and blue, so each family member can have their own set. They’re machine washable and can be worn with or without shoes. They can even be slipped onto an existing mop head to clean windows or wash a car!

We recommend slipping these suckers on, cranking up the music and dancing around (and cleaning!) your floors. Mop slippers are the most fun when you’ve got other people grooving with you. Plus, you’ll cut cleaning time in half with multiple feet (aka mop heads).

Mop Slippers Product Features

Each pair of mop slippers measures about 5 inches in width and 11 inches in length, and has an elastic-stretch opening to wrap around your foot or the sole of your shoe. You can use them like you would a dry mop, however, they’re not waterproof. If you’re going to use them with a cleaning solution, we recommend using a cleaner that sprays, so that you don’t completely saturate the slipper and get your feet wet.

I wear a size 10 in women’s tennis shoes, and I did have a little bit of trouble pulling these over my shoes. So, if your feet are larger than a women’s size 10 (men’s 8), you’ll probably have to use these without shoes.

How We Tested Them

Tamicy Mop Slippers Shoes Mary Henn Family Handyman

I put these mop slippers to the test as soon as they arrived in the mail, as my apartment floors—which are laminate—desperately needed cleaning. I used them as a dry duster first, picking up dog hair and other day-to-day dirt that had accumulated since my last cleaning. They did a fine job picking up clumps of hair and lint. They did, however, also leave behind a little bit of their own lint, which probably could have been avoided had I washed the slippers first.

Next, I popped on another pair and used an all-purpose spray cleaner to spot clean areas in my apartment that get more foot traffic. The mop slippers soak up quite a bit of liquid (which is great if you’re using them to clean up a spill). So, I found myself spraying the floors frequently while cleaning.

I also gave a pair to my mom, who has hardwood floors throughout her home, and she liked the way they cleaned. In fact, I would say that the mop slippers are best suited for hardwood floors over any other type of flooring. Hardwood and laminate flooring can be moisture-sensitive, so using a water-absorbent mop head, like these microfiber mop slippers, are a smart choice for cleaning without excess liquid.

What occurred to me later, however, became my favorite thing about the mop slippers: They’re a smart way to keep pet hair off your socks when you’re walking around the house. No matter how often you clean, if you have animals in your home, it seems like your socks are inevitably doomed to collect hair. Sliding these mop slippers over your socks when you’re chilling at home not only protects your socks from becoming a trap for dog or cat hair, but they also dust your floors while you walk around.

Pros

  • Super affordable
  • Comes in a pack of five pairs
  • Reusable
  • Machine washable
  • Absorbent
  • Multipurpose
  • Colorful

Cons

  • Fit most, but not all, feet
  • May shed upon first use

FAQ

Is microfiber good for mopping?

Microfiber is great for quickly cleaning hard surfaces. The main advantages are that you don’t need to use chemicals for cleaning (as microfiber naturally picks up dust, dander and dirt), and you don’t have to haul a bucket of water with you while mopping with a microfiber mop head.

Are mop slippers slippery?

They can be! If you’re on the clumsy side or prone to falling, you may want to use the mop slippers one at a time, so that you have one sturdy foot to ground you. We also noticed that the mop slippers seemed to be a little bit more slippery on hardwood floors than on laminate flooring.

What are mop slippers for?

Microfiber mop slippers not only pick up daily dust, dirt and pet hair, but they also absorb liquids. They’re great for kitchen spills and cleaning floors. They’re also nifty for dusting baseboards and mopping hard-to-reach spots on the bathroom floor (around the toilet and under the sink) without getting on your hands and knees.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Verified purchaser, Janet Meehan, calls the mop slippers practical and fun. “OK… wasn’t sure what to expect, but these worked pretty great!” she writes. “I was able to slip these right over my size 8.5 women’s sneakers with ease and go to town cleaning my kitchen floors. I just sprayed floor cleaner on my hardwood floors and skated across them with my damp “floor cleaning footies” (as I like to call them), and my floor was done in less than five minutes! I just rinse them out and toss them in the washer and dryer with a load of towels, and they are ready for next time! I would definitely call that a busy mom win!”

Bree Schlageter loves these mop slippers. “Best thing I have ever ordered!!” she confirms. “They work amazing on hardwood floors.”

“They let your feet do jobs that otherwise require hands and knees on the floor (like behind toilets)!” writes five-star Amazon reviewer, Lauri K. Thomas, noting that the mop slippers fit onto a Swiffer WetJet.

Final Verdict

We recommend the mop slippers to anyone who’s looking for a fun and easy way to clean hard floors. They’re a clever way to engage kids in cleaning in an exciting way, and they’ll convince adults to refresh their space. We love that they’re multipurpose and easy to wash. Slip them over shoes or socks to pick up pet hair as you go about your day, attach them to a dry mop for a reusable mop head or even use them to wash your car. When you’re done, throw them in the washing machine so they’re clean for next time.

Note: You might want to avoid placing these mop slippers in the dryer. Frequent drying will loosen the fabric and make them prone to pilling. If you do dry them, we recommend a low heat setting and skipping dryer sheets.

O-Cedar PowerCorner Pet Pro Broom & Step-On Dustpan

O-Cedar’s PowerCorner has you covered for almost anything, and the rubber lip ensures nothing slips underneath. It comes with a step-on dustpan, which has a handle at the back you hold in place with your foot, and it snaps onto the 45-inch handle for easy storage. Even more impressive is how well it combats oily residue. Once a year, I spray the underside and doors with protective oil to prevent rust. Inevitably, there’s always a little overspray on the vinyl. To my surprise, this stuff is all I need to make it good as new.

The device attaches to your existing pool pump and filter and sucka debris into the skimmer. Programmed to turn every eight to 10 feet, it’s recommended for pools up to 16×32 feet.

How To Disinfect a Mattress https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-disinfect-a-mattress/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-disinfect-a-mattress/#respond Fri, 24 Feb 2023 22:33:24 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=518761 Whether you have a traditional innerspring, memory foam or a popular mattress-in-a-box, all mattresses get dirty. They're repositories for dead skin cells, dirt, sweat and germs. If this is news to you, it's time to clean your mattress.

But what about disinfecting? Is that possible?

"It depends on how you define disinfection," says Allen Rathey, director of the Indoor Health Council. Technically, disinfection means to kill germs on hard, nonporous surfaces, and "mattresses are too porous and thick to effectively and completely 'disinfect' in place," Rathey says.

However, if you define it more informally — say, making something more hygienic — you can do that to a mattress.

One way is to spray it with an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered disinfectant. "Some of those products will reduce germs on soft surfaces, too," Rathey says, "though not necessarily at the same level as on hard surfaces." Rathey says with this method, it's important to follow label directions. The solution needs to stay in the fibers of the mattress long enough to kill germs.

If spraying your mattress with a harsh chemical isn't for you, Leanne Stapf, chief operating officer of The Cleaning Authority, walks us through a DIY cleaning and disinfection technique that physically removes dirt, skin flakes and other food sources that germs need to thrive.

How to Use Dryer Sheets to Clean Toilets in No Time Flat https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-use-dryer-sheets-to-clean-toilets-in-no-time-flat/ Fri, 24 Feb 2023 18:39:04 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=519646 Thanks to TikTok, it seems like there’s a cleaning hack for practically every part of your house. As someone who wants to do the least amount of work possible for spotless results, I’m a huge fan! Now I use lemons to clean my cutting boards, and dishwasher tablets to clean the oven.

For my next trick, I’ll show you how to clean a toilet with a dryer sheet. It’s one of many dryer sheet uses that aren’t laundry.

How to Use Dryer Sheets to Clean Toilets

If you’ve got long hair, you know it can get stuck in that small crevice between the toilet bowl and the tank. While it’s not a spot we touch every day, it’s still nice to keep it sparkling clean. Especially when we worked so hard to get the rest of the bathroom looking gorgeous!

Pick up dust and hair

Lucky for us, TikTok user @amandakaysheppard presents the hack we didn’t know we needed. All you need is a normal dryer sheet.

Run it over any part of your toilet with unwanted dust, hair or debris. The sheet picks up all that loose stuff in a flash. No more going back two or three times while your towel or cloth pushes it around.

Remove the “toilet ring”

If you want to get the most out of your dryer sheets (and we know you do), use them to scrub the inside of your toilet.

We’ve all seen those unsightly rings in toilets that just won’t go away, no matter what products you use. So pull on a pair of rubber gloves, grab your sheet and get scrubbing! The gentle woven fibers of the sheet don’t scratch the toilet while the fabric softener eliminates stains. It really is an all-in-one.

What To Know About Airbnb Cleaning Fees https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/airbnb-cleaning-fees/ Fri, 24 Feb 2023 15:37:02 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=518745 No one likes fees. The word evokes vague charges and too much fine print. Even when the fees are totally legit, like Airbnb cleaning fees — you want a clean place to stay, right? — it’s annoying when there’s no consistency or standardization.

Kirsty Vitarelli, owner of this Berkshires retreat, likens Airbnb cleaning fees to booking a flight. “It gives you a certain price, and then they add on taxes and fees and baggage and all the extra bits,” Vitarelli says. “What you see at the very beginning isn’t necessarily what you end up with at the end of the transaction.”

That can be frustrating for guests and hosts alike. Guests can’t reliably search by price, and, as Airbnb co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky says, hosts don’t always know the fees Airbnb adds. Sometimes, Chesky says, “hosts tell us that they’re not aware of what guests are paying because as you know, we add a guest service fee on top of the price that hosts charge.”

Recently, Airbnb instituted changes to their search function to address the confusion over cleaning fees. Here’s what you need to know.

What Are Airbnb Cleaning Fees?

Airbnb cleaning fees pay for readying the property for the next guest after you leave. Unless hosts clean their property themselves, which the Vitarellis tried but quickly decided against, this fee goes to the cleaning service hired by the owner.

Renee Brandon, who owns this Texas beach escape with her husband Russell, says her service launders the sheets and towels, wipes down surfaces and cleans the floors, showers and countertops. Airbnb’s enhanced five-step cleaning process, implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, also includes sanitizing all surfaces with approved disinfectants.

According to AirDNA, a website that compiles data and analytics on the short-term rental market, the 2022 average cleaning fee for a one-room shared space in the U.S. was $47. A five-bedroom (and up) house cost $333.

How To Set Airbnb Cleaning Fees

Airbnb hosts completely control what they charge for cleaning services. “We pay $200 and charge the guest $200,” Brandon says. “We do not make anything in the cleaning process.”

Brandon says that while guests have so far been happy to pay the fee, she requires a two-night minimum stay so it doesn’t take such a bite.

Vitarelli offers a similar perspective. “We have a flat fee for every stay,” Vitarelli says. “Our cleaner sets the price. That’s how much it costs to clean the house, top to bottom, and get it ready for the next guest.” Whether you stay 10 days or one night, all guests pay the same $75 fee.

What’s New with Airbnb Cleaning Fees?

Man cleaning the floor with broom.

Cleaning fees have taken a beating recently. Stories of exorbitant, or at least perplexing, charges, sometimes higher than the nightly rate, have fueled social media trends about Airbnb’s fees in particular.

Even when hosts established straightforward cleaning fees, until recently potential guests perusing Airbnb listings would only see the nightly rate on the main page and map search. So let’s say you found a place within your budget per night and clicked to reserve. Only then did you see the total cost, including cleaning and service fees. In some cases it added several hundred dollars, busting your budget.

In response to this frustration, Airbnb launched a toggle on their search bar that allows potential guests to filter searches by total price (before taxes), including all fees. Chesky announced the change on Twitter last year, and the new setup deployed shortly after. For guests, the update provides a complete breakdown, including all fees. For hosts, it allows more flexibility to give incentives and discounts.

What About No Cleaning Fee?

Most Airbnb properties in the U.S. — nearly 85% — charge cleaning fees, according to AirDNA, so they’re not likely to suddenly disappear. Someone has to clean the property before the next guest, and hosts will not eat that cost. Vitarelli says if they didn’t charge a cleaning fee, they’d add some or all of it to the nightly rate.

Though most U.S. hosts charge cleaning fees as a separate expense, anecdotal evidence of increased bookings after nixing the cleaning fee and raising the nightly rate exists. Chesky said last year Airbnb’s algorithm favors all-in pricing, so expect more hosts to move in this direction.

How To Disinfect Baby Toys https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/how-to-disinfect-baby-toys/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/how-to-disinfect-baby-toys/#respond Thu, 23 Feb 2023 21:38:35 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=listicle&p=518359

A man putting dirty children's toys into dishwasher machine.

Disinfect Plastic Baby Toys in the Dishwasher

Solid plastic baby toys without fabric, porous parts or holes that trap water can be sanitized in the dishwasher.

To kill most germs and bacteria, use a wash setting that’s at least 150 degrees. A sanitize or sani-rinse setting will get even hotter; Whirlpool claims that dishwashers “kill 99.999% of food soil bacteria.” But before you load all your baby’s plastic toys into the dishwasher, do a test run with the softest one, to ensure the high temperature doesn’t melt it.

You could also wash plastic baby toys by hand with an antibacterial dish soap, then submerge them in a solution of a one-quarter teaspoon household bleach and a one quart water. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sanitizing guidelines, “any remaining bleach will break down quickly as it dries and will not hurt your baby.”

You don’t even need to rinse them. Just let the items air dry on a clean dishtowel or paper towel before they go back into your baby’s hands — and mouth.

How Often To Mop Wood Floors Safely and Effectively https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-often-to-mop-wood-floors/ Wed, 22 Feb 2023 22:15:31 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=518217 Gleaming, polished oak floors give a home a clubby vibe, while white-pine planks evoke sun-kissed cheeks and sandy swimsuits. Whatever style wood floor you have, it’s important to keep it clean. But how?

You probably sweep, but are you apprehensive about going further? Can you actually mop wood floors?

There’s also the question of whether your wood floors are actually made of wood, or if they’re really good imposters. Engineered wood, with a hardwood veneer over sturdy plywood, and solid hardwood have different cleaning requirements than laminate and vinyl flooring. The latter products often mimic the look of wood so well it’s hard to tell.

We asked two professional cleaners with decades of experience what they reach for when cleaning hardwood or engineered wood floors.

Can You Mop Wood Floors?

“Yes, you can absolutely mop hardwood floors,” says Dan Deonarain, owner of Galaxy Maids, a residential and commercial cleaning company that services the New York City and Boston areas. However, it should not be your default option for everyday dust and dirt. That honor goes to your broom and vacuum cleaner.

Johnny Pallares, owner of De La Rosa House Cleaning in Phoenix, Arizona, also recommends mopping wood floors, but don’t haul out the bucket and hot water just yet. Mopping wood floors isn’t the same as mopping tile or laminate flooring. Heavy-duty cleaners that break up grease in your kitchen might not be suitable for your wood floors, so use caution.

Consult the flooring manufacturer for mopping recommendations. “They’ll provide very specific care instructions and products, along with the frequency of use,” Deonarain says.

Mopping Hardwood Floors: Pro Tips

Both experts say you should use as little water as possible. Pallares says water tends to pool on hardwood floors, leading to water stains and other damage. “Water, over time, can get into the wood and cause warping,” Deonarain says. You could be looking at mold growth, too.

Also, beware of products that promise a heavy shine. “[T]hey tend to look great right after cleaning, but can cloud up after you start walking on the floor,” Deonarain says. And avoid overly aggressive cleaners, particularly anything acidic. “These will permanently damage your floor, and make it more susceptible to water damage,” Deonarain says.

Now you know what not to use. But what should you use?

Pallares suggests Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner, which comes ready to use and doesn’t leave any residue, so there’s no rinsing. Just spray it on and rub into the wood. Bona also makes a spray-mop applicator for wood floors.

Pallares loves Murphy’s Oil Soap concentrate, too. “Murphy’s Oil Soap Wood Cleaner is great for floors, and helps condition the wood,” he says.

How Often Should You Mop Wood Floors?

Depending on traffic, Deonarain says mop kitchens and entryways weekly, and living rooms and dining rooms every other week. Bedrooms and home offices probably only need once a month, he says. This assumes you’re sweeping and vacuuming regularly, so keep up with those tasks in between mopping.

Pallares prefers mopping all hardwood floors — with an appropriate cleaner only — once a week. Whatever schedule you choose, make it your own by tailoring to your individual traffic and grime levels.

How To Care for Wood Floors Between Mopping

Once you’ve got your hardwood or engineered wood floor mopped and looking great, keep it that way!

Besides sweeping and vacuuming regularly, Deonarain shares these tips to protect your wood floor and maintain that just-mopped look:

Pro tip: Before applying polishes, waxes and concealers, test a small, inconspicuous area to verify the color match and any adverse effects.

How to Clean a Microwave With Everyday Household Items https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-clean-a-microwave/ Thu, 16 Feb 2023 16:27:11 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=515585 Learn how to clean a microwave in less than 10 minutes. It’s easy, we promise!

]]>
“Hooray! It’s time to clean the microwave,” said no one … ever.

Even if you’re the King or Queen of Clean, scrubbing out a microwave ranks up there with trying on bathing suits, deep-cleaning the oven and sifting through the garbage for your child’s discarded retainer. (Read: Not fun at all.) From last week’s scorched-on spaghetti sauce to massive chili explosions, microwave remnants are not for the weak-hearted.

But messy outcomes shouldn’t keep you from nuking your dinner. Here’s how to clean a microwave with minimal effort.

How to Clean a Microwave

Cleaning a microwave requires minimal supplies. It really only takes a few household items like lemon, baking soda and a dishcloth to get it looking (and smelling) up to par.

Tools and supplies

  • Angry Mama Microwave Cleaner: This is the secret to cleaning a microwave with minimal scrubbing. Pour a dash of water and vinegar in the device, heat it in the microwave and watch as steam releases from Angry Mama’s head. It instantly clears up crusty messes, though it’s smart to give the microwave a proper wipe down afterwards.
  • Swedish DishclothsSkip the paper towels and opt for these sustainable products. Simply wet one with water and get to wiping!
  • Miracle Wipes: Finish off your microwave cleaning with Miracle Wipes. They remove interior and exterior grime from appliances while leaving a streak-free shine.
  • Pantry ingredients: Depending on your microwave cleaning method of choice, make sure you have vinegar, baking soda and a lemon on hand.

How to Clean a Microwave With Vinegar

Step 1: Pour in a dash of water and vinegar to the Angry Mama Microwave Cleaner’s fill line. Or pour one cup of vinegar and one cup of water into a microwave-safe bowl.

Step 2: Microwave the Angry Mama on high for two minutes. If using the bowl method, heat the solution in your microwave for six to eight minutes. Then let it sit for an additional two minutes.

Step 3: Remove the Angry Mama Microwave Cleaner or bowl carefully with oven mitts. Dip a rag or microfiber towel into the solution and gently wipe the inside and outside of your microwave. For stubborn residue, use a dish sponge. Voilá! You’re done!

How to Clean a Microwave With Baking Soda

Step 1: Fill a microwave-safe bowl with one cup of baking soda and two cups of water.

Step 2: Heat the bowl in the microwave on high for five minutes, then carefully remove the bowl with oven mitts.

Step 3: Dip a sponge into the solution to wipe the microwave inside and out. For stubborn stains, use the solution as a paste and rub each stain with a sponge until the microwave is clean.

How to Clean a Microwave With Lemon

a small bowl of water and lemon In a microwave for cleaning

Step 1: Pour one cup of water into a microwave-safe bowl. Slice a lemon in half and squeeze its juice into the bowl. Then drop both lemon halves into the bowl.

Step 2: Heat the solution in the microwave on high for five minutes or until it boils. Then allow it to sit in the microwave for an additional five minutes. This lets the acidity and steam to loosen dried-on food stains.

Step 3: Remove the bowl with oven mitts and wipe the microwave clean with the solution. For any lingering stains, soak a sponge in the solution and rub until the stains dissipate. Your microwave will be good as new and have a clean lemony scent.

How to Remove a Burnt Smell From a Microwave

Knowing how to remove this is ultra-important. If the stench persists after following the cleaning instructions above, try this:

Step 1: Place a deodorizer inside your microwave, like an open box of baking soda or one cup of dried coffee grounds in an uncovered bowl. Leave it inside overnight (eight to 12 hours) to absorb the odor.

Step 2: Remove the deodorizer from the microwave and discard. Apply vanilla extract, lemon juice or your favorite essential oil to a damp rag and wipe the microwave inside and out.

If it still stinks, the smell is likely trapped in the filters. Refer to your owner’s manual for instructions on how to replace or clean the filters.

FAQs

How Do You Clean Gunk Out of the Microwave?

If food residue lingers, heat one cup of water mixed with two tablespoons of baking soda in the microwave for five minutes. This makes it easier to wipe the remains away while deodorizing the microwave. Mix lemon juice with the baking soda and water solution to leave it smelling extra fresh.

How Do You Clean a Microwave With White Vinegar?

Follow the same steps as above and replace the baking soda with one cup of white vinegar.

How Often to Clean a Microwave

Routinely cleaning your microwave prevents food from hardening and drying to the interior surface and flavoring your food with old residue.

It’s smart to give your microwave a quick clean once a week by wiping it out with a damp rag (though you should wipe down big messes immediately). Do a deep clean once a month following the steps above to prevent stains from settling in.

How to Clean and Sanitize a Toothbrush https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-clean-and-sanitize-a-toothbrush/ Wed, 15 Feb 2023 21:45:01 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=515614 If you know how to clean a toothbrush, you know it isn’t time-consuming or costly. But you may be surprised how often you should do it.

]]>
We’re more likely to think about cleaning things with a toothbrush than cleaning the toothbrush itself. That’s because it’s easy to space out on cleaning the things that do our cleaning for us.

Making time to clean a dishwasher, washing machine or showerhead helps them sparkle and shine and also makes for a healthier environment. Learning how to clean a toothbrush is no different.

“I always say, never rush while you brush,” says Dr. Roopali Kulkarni, an oral surgeon, university professor and spokesperson for the American Dental Association (ADA). “Take the time to clean your toothbrush too.”

If tidying the bathroom is already part of your cleaning schedule, why not add washing those bristles to the list? Here’s how to clean your toothbrush to keep bacteria at bay and your pearly whites shining.

Why You Need to Clean Your Toothbrush

“Our mouth is home to millions of types of bacteria, many good, and some not as good,” Kulkarni says. “Cleaning the toothbrush is getting rid of residue, toothpaste, saliva, blood and plaque, which is a sticky substance that holds some of the bacteria in our mouth.”

Thinking about the gunk on your toothbrush? Don’t get too grossed out just yet. The ADA says that while toothbrushes do harbor bacteria, there’s no evidence it causes adverse health effects.

How Often Should You Clean Your Toothbrush?

Those tooth scrubbers are definitely a household item you don’t clean often enough. Clean it after each time you brush your teeth. It won’t take as long as it does to, say, clean the kitchen from top to bottom. But it should take the same amount of time as actually brushing your teeth.

“If you use it twice a day, clean it twice a day,” says Kulkarni.

How to Clean a Toothbrush

Daily Cleaning Of The Toothbrush After Use In Bathroom Sink

It doesn’t differ much whether you’ve got a manual toothbrush or an electric one. Here’s how to clean yours effectively:

How to clean a manual toothbrush

    1. Run water on it until the bristles are free of residue and debris. “Rinse the head with warm tap water thoroughly until it looks clean after you use it,” Kulkarni says.
    2. Rinse off the handle until it’s clean, too. Kulkarni says no matter what material your toothbrush is made of —plastic, bamboo, wood, whatever — thoroughly dry it when you’re done.
    3. Store it upright so it can air dry.

How to clean an electric toothbrush

    1. Run warm tap water on the bristle head until it’s free of residue and debris.
    2. Rinse off the handle until it’s clean. “Be mindful if the brush has a cord or a charger, so you keep it away from water,” Kulkarni says.
    3. Like a manual toothbrush, store it upright to air dry.

How to Disinfect a Toothbrush

Have you heard soaking a toothbrush in hydrogen peroxide cleans it better? Dental research hasn’t decisively concluded whether it does. According to Kulkarni, rinsing it with warm water after each use is enough to keep it clean.

If you feel like doing something extra to de-germify your toothbrush, there are sanitizing devices on the market, including those that employ ultraviolet rays. “Look for ones that are approved by the FDA [the Food and Drug Administration] or have the ADA seal of acceptance,” Kulkarni says.

How to Store Your Toothbrush

Storing a toothbrush upright allows extra water to drip off it instead of pooling at the bristles, which encourages bacteria to thrive. It’s also important to give it space. “Keep it away from other toothbrushes when you’re done, so it doesn’t get contaminated again,” says Kulkarni.

If there are multiple people in a home and you store all the toothbrushes in a common holder, make sure they aren’t touching. Kulkarni also recommends keeping them far from the toilet. “When you flush, water can splash up and land on your toothbrush,” she says. Not exactly the feel-fresh situation we’re looking for. (Always close the toilet lid before flushing, if you aren’t already.)

How Often to Replace Your Toothbrush

According to the ADA, replace your toothbrush approximately every three to four months, or more often if the bristles are matted or frayed. The effectiveness of the brush decreases as the bristles wear.

“Typically, we recommend soft-bristled toothbrushes, but you might notice the bristles are floppy or worn down more quickly,” Kulkarni says. “That’s a sign that the material has become frayed, and it’s time to replace it.” Do the same with electric toothbrush heads.

FAQs

Does boiling a toothbrush disinfect it?

Boiling-hot water certainly cleans things, like glass shower doors, but it’s not the best option for toothbrushes. “The high heat can damage the material and the bristles,” Kulkarni says. “It’s best to rinse it under warm water every time you use the brush.”

The ADA also doesn’t recommend microwaving or putting toothbrushes in the dishwasher, for the same reason.

How do you keep a toothbrush clean?

Never let it stay dirty. You don’t want your tooth scrubber to be one of the germiest things in the bathroom. Rinse it and get rid of debris immediately after using it. Every. Single. Time.

Can toothbrushes be shared?

No. According to the ADA, toothbrushes should not be used by more than one person. Doing so could result in an exchange of bodily fluids and microorganisms, and you really don’t need that to happen.

How do you keep a toothbrush clean while traveling?

Use a plastic bristle cover to keep your toothbrush away from other products in your toiletry bag. And when you get to your destination, take it off so the toothbrush has ventilation.

“Moisture makes more bacteria grow,” says Kulkarni. “Covering the toothbrush when it’s wet is exactly what you need to avoid doing.”

Dog taking bath at home"n

Give Your Dog a Bath

While it’s common to wash your dog’s bed, bowls and toys, giving your four-legged friend a bath will extend the results of your other spring cleaning projects. And a clean dog makes the air feel fresher.

Before you spring-clean your bathtub, wash your dog there. First, collect the necessary supplies — treats, a dog brush, dog-safe shampoo and conditioner, a large plastic cup, a non-slip mat for him and a kneeling pad for you. Also grab lots of towels.

Start by brushing your dog to remove excess fur. Then put the non-slip mat into the tub and run the water until it reaches a consistent and comfortable temperature.

Lift small dogs into the tub, or invite large dogs to jump in on their own, using a treat as encouragement. Wet your dog with the plastic cup, then wash and condition as recommended on the bottles. Rinse your dog thoroughly, then dry him off. Lift him out of the tub, give him one more treat for being a good boy, and stand back and prepare for the zoomies!

These Simple Hacks Will Eliminate Dust from Your Home https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/dusting-hacks/ Mon, 13 Feb 2023 17:24:48 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=514297 Try as we might, keeping a house dust-free is almost impossible. We ourselves produce dust particles, as do the clothes we wear. Dust in the morning during chores and by dinner time you might already see some gray specks accumulating on the table.

There are some great ways to keep your home less dusty, but over time the dust will always return. This is because dust is composed of elements found in every living situation. We shed dead skin cells and hair that add to the dust pile, and fabric particles from our clothes and linens also contribute to dust accumulation.

Seasonal impacts on dust accumulation also play a role. Consider how winter causes dry skin and the need for fluffy blankets while spring and summer call for doors and windows to open, letting in pollen and dirt particles—all of which contribute to dust. Sometimes the dust is unavoidable, like if new homes are being built nearby or you live in an area prone to dust storms.

How to Reduce Dust Around the House

When it comes to breathing in clean air, dust is a detrimental factor. The American Lung Association notes that dust and dust mites are some of the major indoor triggers for people with asthma and that dusting regularly is important to improve indoor air quality.

You’re not alone if you’re researching dusting hacks to make the chore less tedious. TikTok creator @mama_mila_, AKA Chantel Mila recently offered three of her favorite dusting hacks—and we have a few more to add!

@mama_mila_ 3 easy ways to manage dust around your home ☁️🏡 #dustremoval #homehacks #cleaninghacks ♬ Lavender Haze – Taylor Swift

Always Dust from Top to Bottom

Since gravity pulls everything down, a time-saving dusting hack is to always dust from the top to the bottom. Walls, high light fixtures, chandeliers and ceiling fans should all be at the top of your dusting list before moving to lower areas. Dust the ceiling fan last and you’ll be re-dusting the floor below. When it comes to dusting the right way, saving time is a priority.

Use Newspaper to Line High Shelving to Prevent Buildup

Another one of Mila’s top dusting tricks is to use newspaper to cover high shelving. When the time comes to dust, you can simply remove and replace the newspaper, knowing all the dust has settled into the newspaper. Best of all, this hack uses all recyclable materials.

Use a Lint Roller for Hard-to-Reach Spots

Lint rollers are one of the best cleaning hacks around, but the tool can also be useful when dusting. Use the lint roller on areas with odd shapes that are hard to reach like lamp shades or items that aren’t machine-washable like decorative throw pillows.

Use a Hairdryer on House Plants

Wiping each leaf of a houseplant can be a tedious dusting task. Instead, try blowing it off with a hair dryer set to a cold-air setting.

Repurpose Tongs for Dusting Blinds

Blinds are one of the most unwieldy household items to dust. One of the easiest ways to get into every nook of the blinds is to use a pair of kitchen tongs to grab and then dust the surface. You can use a microfiber cloth over the tongs or even a pair of old socks.

Use a DIY spray

Making your own dusting spray is both economical and helpful for reducing dust. With just four ingredients, using a DIY dusting spray can help prevent dust from building up. As a bonus, it leaves your home smelling clean and fresh.

Keep Pets Brushed and Clean

Similar to how our skin sheds, pets also produce dander than can contribute to a dusty home. Keeping pets brushed and well-groomed can keep dust to a minimum, especially if the pets have a liking for rolling around outside.

Low-tech methods like soap and vinegar worked for years. Then commercial products that promised better living through chemistry marketed their way into homes around the world.

Now, consumers increasingly want cleaning options that aren't harmful to the environment. So tried-and-true, natural solutions staged a comeback, surging in popularity in recent years. Analysts predict the natural cleaning products market will rise more than 11% per year through 2025, to a whopping $7.8 billion valuation.

While you can buy natural cleaning products for your windows, simple DIY recipes abound. Leanne Stapf, chief operating officer of The Cleaning Authority, says mixing one part vinegar to 10 parts water works to shine up your windows practically for free. Pick Up Clutter

Don’t pick up a mop or a rag until you’ve picked up your stuff and put things away.

“Before you start deep cleaning, you should make sure all rooms are tidy and free of any clutter so you can thoroughly clean the space,” says Alicia Sokolowski, president and co-CEO of AspenClean, a natural cleaning products company based in Canada.

Look for clutter buildup in high-traffic areas. That’s probably the entrance, where you drop keys and junk mail, and kitchen surfaces. Nightstands and bathroom countertop tend to collect clutter, too.

Once you’ve decluttered, gather your cleaning supplies. Some things, like dish soap and toilet bowl cleaner, can stay in the room where they’re needed. Others you’ll need to carry with you. Consider a cleaning caddy to carry multipurpose cleaners from room to room. In time, you’ll figure out the routines that work for you.

Washing the car

Conserves Water

By most estimates, washing your car at home consumes 80 to 140 gallons of water. But an eco-friendly car wash on average uses only about 45 gallons, or about 60% less. What’s behind the water savings? State-of-the-art washing equipment distributes water more efficiently than a garden hose. And the car wash also recycles the water it uses.

4.9 Million Bottles of Fabuloso Cleaner Recalled Over Potential Bacteria Contamination https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/fabuloso-recall-bacteria-contamination/ Thu, 09 Feb 2023 16:21:22 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=513991 Colgate-Palmolive, the company that makes the popular cleaner and disinfectant Fabuloso, is recalling 4.9 million bottles of Fabuloso Multi-Purpose Cleaner because the product may be contaminated with bacteria.

Why Is Fabuloso Being Recalled?

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on Feb. 8. In a statement, the federal agency said the products may contain Pseudomonas bacteria.

Typically found in soil and water, this bacteria puts people with weakened immune systems and other chronic health issues at risk for serious infection. People with healthy immune systems are usually not affected and unlikely to get sick, according to the agency’s statement.

The bacteria can be inhaled, enter through the eyes or through a break in the skin, like a cut or scratch.

According to a statement from the company, “A preservative was not added at the intended levels during manufacturing.” That can lead to the potential for bacteria growth in the products.

What Fabuloso Products Are Being Recalled?

The recall encompasses bottles manufactured between Dec. 14, 2022 and Jan. 23, 2023. The company says 80 percent of those bottles were never released for sale.

Nine types of Fabuloso cleaners are subject to the recall. Here are the individual products listed by the CPSC:

  • Fabuloso Original Multi-Purpose Cleaner Refreshing Lemon Scent, 22 fl. oz.
  • Fabuloso Original Multi-Purpose Cleaner Lavender Scent, 22 fl. oz.
  • Fabuloso Multi-Purpose Cleaner 2X Concentrated Formula, Lemon Scent, 33.8 fl. oz., 56 fl. oz., 128 fl. oz. and 169 fl. oz.
  • Fabuloso Multi-Purpose Cleaner 2X Concentrated Formula, Passion of Fruits Scent, 33.8 fl. oz., 56 fl. oz., 128 fl. oz. and 169 fl. oz.
  • Fabuloso Multi-Purpose Cleaner 2X Concentrated Formula, Lavender Scent, 56 fl. oz., 128 fl. oz. and 169 fl. oz.
  • Fabuloso Multi-Purpose Cleaner Bleach Alternative 2X Concentrated Formula, Spring Fresh Scent, 56 fl. oz.
  • Fabuloso Multi-Purpose Cleaner, Lavender Scent, 210 fl. oz.
  • Fabuloso Professional All Purpose Cleaner & Degreaser, Lavender Scent, One Gallon.
  • Fabuloso Professional All Purpose Cleaner & Degreaser, Ocean Scent, One Gallon.

What to Do if You Have Recalled Fabuloso?

If you purchased any of the recalled Fabuloso products, the CPSC advises you stop using it and dispose of it in its container.

Colgate-Palmolive is offering a refund to anyone who purchased the affected products. To claim it, fill out this form on the company’s web site. You’ll also need to submit photos of the UPS and manufacturing codes. Instructions for where to find that information on the Fabuloso container can be found on the company’s web site as well.

You can expect refunds within four to six weeks.

What Is Fabuloso?

Fabuloso is a popular all-purpose cleaner for walls, counters, toilets, cabinets, all kinds of floors and nearly any other hard surface in your home. Originally created in Venezuela in 1980, it’s been sold in other countries since 1983. Fabuloso debuted in the United States in 1996. By 2019, it was the most popular all-purpose cleaner sold in the U.S., even more than Pine-Sol.

Kitchen Cleanup Checklist

Modern Open Concept Home Interior

Use the checklist below to tidy up every time you use your kitchen. The steps will vary depending on the complexity of what you’re cooking or baking.

  • Clear the eating area if it’s part of the kitchen.
  • Put away cooking ingredients and store leftovers.
  • Load the dishwasher. If it has a rinse cycle or it’s ready to run, scrape off excess food before loading. Or rinse with a dish brush and water.
  • Hand wash dishes, pots, pans and other items if you lack a dishwasher, or if you’ve got non-stick pans that aren’t dishwasher safe.
  • Clean the table and countertops. Use a cloth dampened with water or an appropriate spray to wipe surfaces, catching crumbs in your hand.
  • Wipe up spills on the stove, microwave and refrigerator with the appropriate cleaners and/or cleaning cloths. If needed, remove the microwave tray and give it a quick wash with soapy water and your dish brush.
  • Sweep or vacuum crumbs off the floor and wipe up any spills.
  • Drain the sink and give it a final rinse.
  • Clean the faucet, handles and sink with a cleaning spray and dry cloth.
  • Once dishes are clean and dry, put them away so you have a clean slate next time you’re ready to cook.

Weekly Kitchen Cleaning Tasks

Doing the dishes, house chores

Each week as part of your regular cleaning routine, check the following areas and do the needed tasks. If you’ve been following the Kitchen Cleanup Checklist regularly, you might check off some items without lifting a finger. (Nice work!)

Dust

Dust light futures, the top of the refrigerator, ceiling fan blades, open shelving, window sills, blinds and any other surfaces with an appropriate microfiber duster. Also be sure to do a quick check for cobwebs.

Cabinets

Check doors and hardware. Wipe away any spots with a microfiber cloth barely dampened with dish soap and water.

Counters and backsplash

Move appliances and other countertop items out of the way, working in sections. Spray the countertop and backsplash and wipe dry with a cloth. Clean countertop items like appliances and canisters with an appropriate spray and cloth.

Microwave

Fill a microwave-safe dish with about a cup of water and a little lemon juice. Turn on the microwave for a minute or two until it fills with steam and loosens any baked-on food. Wipe it down inside and out with the appropriate spray and a microfiber cloth.

Stove and range hood

For a gas stove, put burners and grates in the dishwasher and clean the top of your stove. Use a scrubbing microfiber cloth to remove hardened bits of food for gas and electric stove tops. Clean the range hood and filter.

Refrigerator

Do a quick inventory. Remove any food past its prime and wipe up any spills with a damp cloth. Finish by giving the outside a quick wipe with your refrigerator spray.

Dishwasher

Wipe down the front, the sides of the door and the handle.

Clean the floor

Start by vacuuming the floor and baseboards to remove crumbs, pet hair and dust. When done, run your microfiber mop head under tap water and wring out the excess. Attach the mop head to the handle and clean the floor. Use a pan scraper to remove food or dirt that doesn’t come up easily.

Clean the sink

Scrub your sink with your cleanser and a cleaning cloth. Clean the faucet, handles and sink with a multipurpose or disinfecting spray and a dry cloth.

Kitchen Deep Cleaning Tasks

These can be done as needed.

  • Dust all surfaces.
  • Wash walls, baseboards and doors with warm water, Castile soap and a microfiber cloth.
  • Wash light fixtures and/or ceiling fan blades with dish soap, water and a microfiber cloth.
  • Wash window treatments following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Declutter kitchen cabinets and drawers and organize the pantry.
  • Wash cabinets and drawers with Castile soap, warm water and a microfiber cloth.
  • Clean your sink sprayer by soaking it in white vinegar.
  • Deep clean the garbage disposal with 1/4-cup baking soda, 1/4-cup lemon juice and a garbage disposal brush.
  • Organize and clean your refrigerator and freezer. Be sure to clean the coils and underneath with your vacuum cleaner or microfiber duster.
  • Deep clean the dishwasher by running a quick cycle with a cup of vinegar.
  • Deep clean inside, outside and underneath the oven and stove.
  • Seal granite countertops and grout as needed, following manufacturer’s instructions.

10 Tips to Help You Spend Less Time Cleaning https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/cleaning-tips-save-time/ Tue, 07 Feb 2023 16:24:18 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=listicle&p=512784

Create a Schedule for Cleaning

Nobody wants to spend their time cleaning, but if you can carve out a routine for yourself, it will help save time in the long run as you’re already on top of cleaning. Set it up a regular checklist based on how often things need to be cleaned. For example, take time to vacuum twice a week, especially if you have pets. When it comes time for an annual top-to-bottom housecleaning, create a schedule that spreads out the cleaning over a week, rather than turning it into two, 16-hour days.

Why Marie Kondo Has Finally Embraced Messy https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/marie-kondo-messy/ Tue, 07 Feb 2023 16:15:19 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=512805 The world-famous tidying expert has a sweet new set of priorities.

]]>
Way back in 2011, a little book hit bookstore shelves that would change our home lives forever. That book? The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by organizing queen Marie Kondo.

Since then the charming lifestyle icon has built a veritable empire of tidying, including a second book, Spark Joy (2016), and two Netflix series — Tidying Up with Marie Kondo (2019) and Sparking Joy with Marie Kondo (2021). Both shows feature Kondo helping the less organized discover their inner neat freaks and embrace the joys of cleanliness.

Her name has become so synonymous with tidying that it’s often used as a slang verb: “She helps people ‘Marie Kondo’ their lives.”

What’s the Marie Kondo Method?

To “Marie Kondo” means employing her KonMari philosophy to clean, tidy and organize one’s way to well-being. The method includes six essential rules, but basically involves two steps.

First, touch everything you own and ask if it sparks joy. If it doesn’t, sell, donate or throw it away. If it does, the item must be appropriately stored among other happiness-inducing items so all are easily visible and accessible.

To Kondo, this organization can lead to inner peace because, she says, “tidying up means dealing with all the ‘things’ in your life.” Curious readers can experiment with the KonMari method on one category of items first, like folding clothes.

Has Marie Kondo Given up on Tidying?

Marie Kondo returned to the spotlight last year to promote her new book, Marie Kondo Karashi at Home (2022). She made waves on her press tour by confessing her home is “messy” now and she has “kind of given up on tidying.” Say it isn’t so!

Her reasons for her newly cluttered home are incredibly sweet, though. She cites the birth of her third child as the primary factor.

“My home is messy, but the way I am spending my time is the right way for me at this time at this stage of my life,” she told the Washington Post.

“Up until now, I was a professional tidier, so I did my best to keep my home tidy at all times … I have kind of given up on that, in a good way for me. Now I realize what is important to me is enjoying spending time with my children at home.”

What is Kurashi?

Kondo’s new life philosophy ties in beautifully to the Japanese concept of kurashi, roughly meaning “the ideal way of spending our time” or “way of life.”

According to Kondo, kurashi takes a holistic approach to well-being, including her signature organization and mindfulness. But it also recognizes a tidy environment as the foundation for realizing one’s dream life, not necessarily an end unto itself. In embodying this balance, the reader can intentionally identify what they want out of life and consciously cultivate those goals.

How Can I Employ Kurashi In My Life?

To start, try being grateful while envisioning what your ideal life may look like — not just your ideal home space. Above all, remember that “perfect is the enemy of the good.” A little gratitude or a little tidying can go a long way toward finding happiness.

Can I Spray Alcohol on My Bed To Disinfect? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/can-i-spray-alcohol-on-my-bed-to-disinfect/ Mon, 06 Feb 2023 18:42:19 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=511245 Disinfecting has been on everyone’s mind since the pandemic began. Sales of disinfecting wipes and other hygiene products have soared in recent years, with no signs of slowing any time soon.

It’s one thing to wipe down your countertops with store-bought or homemade disinfecting wipes, but what about porous items like your mattress? After all, mattresses are huge repositories for dead skin and other organic material that microorganisms and dust mites feed on. Did you know mattresses actually get heavier the longer you sleep on them?

While that sounds pretty gross, it doesn’t mean you’ll get sick from your mattress, or you need to immediately douse it in chemicals. Your risk of illness from any hazard depends on your personal vulnerability and exposure levels. Still, would using alcohol help? I talked to Allen Rathey, director of the Indoor Health Council, to find out.

Can Isopropyl (aka Rubbing) Alcohol Be Used as a Disinfectant?

Yes, but it helps to define what “disinfectant” means. It also depends on what you’re trying to disinfect.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), disinfectants kill viruses and bacteria on surfaces with chemicals. Note the “on surfaces” distinction — that means hard, nonporous surfaces, not soft items like mattresses and bedding.

Rathey says some products the EPA registers as disinfectants will reduce germs on soft surfaces—just not necessarily at the same level as nonporous surfaces.

In casual use, Rathey says people think of disinfecting as reducing bacterial load and making things more hygienic. In that sense, alcohol can be used on mattresses, but keep the distinction in mind.

If you use alcohol for disinfecting anything — whether it’s surfaces, your hands or your mattress — the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that a 60% to 90% dilution is the most effective. Curiously, higher concentrations do not work as well.

Can I Spray Alcohol on My Bed To Disinfect?

You can, but whether you’d want to is debatable.

For your bedding, stick to the washer and dryer. It’s much more effective, not to mention easier. “Due to their porous nature, hot water laundry and hot drying is the best approach for sheets,” Rathey says.

What about the mattress itself? It’s OK to use an EPA-registered disinfectant on many mattress types, Rathey says, but test first for colorfastness before you start spraying that expensive pillow-top. Always follow label directions for the amount of time to soak, and any dilution requirements.

“While isopropyl alcohol will help lower germ counts,” Rathey says, “the practicality is questionable, as you’d need to soak the surface and allow wet dwell time.”

Dwell time means how long the disinfectant needs to sit on the surface or in the fibers of the material. Depending on what organisms you’re trying to kill, this could be seconds, minutes or even longer. Soaking a mattress would take a ton of alcohol, making this idea pretty untenable.

Alcohol evaporates quickly, too, further complicating the time constraint. Not to mention, alcohol stinks.

How Often Should You Disinfect a Bed?

According to the Sleep Foundation, you should clean your mattress every six months or so. Cleaning is different from disinfecting, though, so it’s really up to you to decide when disinfecting is necessary.

Rathey says if you keep your mattress clean, disinfection could be done as needed. This could be after someone has been sick, or the mattress becomes soiled.

Preventing mattresses from getting dirty in the first place is your first defense against germs. Remove shoes at the front door, Rathey says. Provide an entry mat to capture dirt and dust before it enters your home and makes its way to your bedroom. Mattress protectors provide a physical barrier and should always be used.

If you’re traveling and worried about the cleanliness of the sheets, Rathey says hotels generally launder them sufficiently. If you’re in a seedy motel and the sheets look shady, sure, you can spray them with alcohol. But again, you’d have to soak the bed (did you bring enough with you?) and live with the smell.

And, as with any product, Rathey recommends testing it first on an inconspicuous spot. You don’t want to be on the hook for ruining motel property.
