Green hedge of thuja trees

Arborvitae

One of the most popular screening plants, arborvitae is a thickly adorned evergreen that comes in a range of shapes, from dwarf globes of just one to two feet all the way up to 30-foot upright giants. Although shorter arborvitae are commonly used as foundation plants, taller ones serve as screens and hedges, providing plenty of privacy.

Arborvitae are tough, hardy plants that can withstand drought once established. Unfortunately, they’re susceptible to winter burn, i.e. desiccation due to drying winter winds. And deer and rabbits will eat up the lower portions during difficult winters. Wrapping in burlap or applying an anti-desiccant spray will help the former, while temporary fencing should alleviate the latter.

Best in U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones 3 through 7.

How To Drain an Above-Ground Pool https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-drain-an-above-ground-pool/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-drain-an-above-ground-pool/#respond Wed, 08 Mar 2023 15:01:34 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=522876 There are a few reasons to drain an above-ground pool. Maybe you’re taking it down for the winter, or upgrading to an in-ground pool. Maybe you’ve neglected the water (hey, it happens!) to the point where it’s beyond treatment and you need to thoroughly clean the pool and start over.

Whatever the reason, draining a pool is seldom as simple as pulling a plug, but it is something you can do yourself. Here’s how.

Tools and Materials to Drain an Above-Ground Pool

Depending on the method (see below), here’s a short list of tools and materials you may need to drain an above-ground pool.

 • Long garden hose: It needs to reach from the pool to whatever drainage point you’ve selected.
 • Swimming pool cover pump: The same type of submersible pump that keeps water from collecting on a pool cover can also be used for draining. A submersible sump pump will work, too.
 • Hose drain adapter: If your pool has a built-in drain valve, you’ll need a hose adapter to attach to it.
 • Utility bucket: A standard bucket with a comfortable handle will come in handy for draining the last few inches of water. Make sure it’s not so big that it’s difficult to lift when filled. Remember, water weighs more than eight pounds per gallon.
 • Shop vacuum: If you don’t want to scoop buckets of water, use a wet/dry shop vacuum to remove remaining water from the bottom of the pool.
 • Swimsuit and sunscreen: It is a pool, after all.

How to Drain an Above-Ground Pool

Think it through

Before you pull the plug, plan out your steps. Here’s what to consider:

 • In most climates, winterizing a pool requires a partial draining at most.
 • If you’re doing a partial drain, remember that removing more than one-quarter of the water can cause the sides of the pool to collapse.
 • For a complete pool draining for disassembly, plan to drain and take down the pool on the same weekend. Leaving an above-ground pool standing empty can damage it quickly.
 • Before you let the water run into your garden, your main clean-out drain or a municipal drain, check with local authorities to make sure it’s permissible. Chlorinated and salt water can damage your lawn, the larger environment and the water supply. If draining is not allowed, call a pool professional.

Draining the pool

There are three ways to drain an above-ground pool:

With a pool cover pump: With a garden hose attached, set a submersible pool cover pump in the middle of the pool floor. Set the other end of the hose wherever you want water to drain. Then turn on the pump and begin draining. Don’t walk away — you need to ensure the pump is working correctly and water drains as it should. Once you get down to the last few inches, remove the pump and drain the rest with a bucket or shop vacuum. You can also do it as you’re disassembling the pool.

With a garden hose siphon: This is the original DIY drainage method! Submerge a long garden hose in the pool, making sure both ends are underwater. Keep pushing down sections of the hose until all the air bubbles come out and the hose fills with water. (You may have to get into the pool to do this.)

Place your finger or hand over one end of the hose and take it out of the pool. Don’t release it until you’re at a spot lower than the waterline. When you’ve reached that point, water should start draining. Once you get down to a few inches of water, drain the rest with a bucket or shop vacuum, or during pool disassembly.

Another option: Attach one end the hose to the water spigot and put the other end in the pool. Turn on the water and let the hose fill up. Then detach the hose from the spigot. The water should start draining.

With a garden hose and pool drain: If your pool has a built-in drain, your job is fairly easy. The pool probably came with a drain adapter to attach to a hose. If not, buy one from a pool supply store. Attach the adapter to the hose, open the drain cover on the outside of the pool (there may be a cover inside the pool as well, which you’ll have to open), insert the adapter and watch the water drain. Depending on the size of your pool, you may need a bucket or shop vac to drain the remaining few inches.

After the pool is drained

Dismantle the pool as soon as possible after the water is out.

 • Detach any hoses and pumps.
 • Clean the interior and exterior of the pool. For small pools, a spray cleaner is fine. For larger pools, use a mild soapy solution and a mop.
 • Make sure the pool is dry.
 • Disassemble and fold, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Wax Myrtle

Also known as southern bayberry because of its glossy olive-green leaves, wax myrtle is a multi-trunk evergreen with whitish-gray bark and leaves that are fragrant when crushed. It reaches 15 to 20 feet tall and wide but can be easily sheared into a hedge.

When male and female plants grow close together, female wax myrtle develops pretty pale-blue berries that birds love. Plants grow up to five feet a year and make great screens. This heat-loving shrub grows best in moist, acidic soil but is adaptable once established. It grows in part to full sun in U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones 7 through 11.

Create Your Own Backyard Oasis Just Like the Ones on ‘The Outdoor Show’ https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/create-your-own-backyard-oasis-just-like-the-ones-on-the-outdoor-show/ Tue, 28 Feb 2023 21:47:06 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=520327 What is the “best” backyard? While it’s hard to define what actually makes a backyard the “best,” we think any backyard where you enjoy spending time is a winner. All it takes is a little inspiration and some DIY know-how.

On the fourth episode of the At Home with Family Handyman series The Outdoor Show, we got an up-close look at two projects that transformed a pair of homes. At one location, we see the addition of two gazebos, giving that backyard dual shady spots for relaxing outdoors. The other project was a pool and deck combination that turned a basic backyard into something closer to Club Med.

A gazebo is a great addition to any yard because it gives you a little oasis for kicking back when the weather’s warm. Building a gazebo is a multi-day project, depending on the complexity of the design. But it’s still something most people can DIY. There are also gazebo kits that save you some time, too.

If a gazebo isn’t your speed, you could build a pergola, another way to add a shady nook in your backyard. They’re great for covering a paver patio or spot in your garden. Another option is the classic screened-in porch, a simple way to enclose your outdoor space so you can relax outdoors without being bothered by flies or mosquitoes.

When it’s hot outside, a pool really makes a terrific addition to any backyard. But to really improve the look and feel, it’s best to surround it with a deck. There are a few options for decking materials go, so make sure to choose something that’s durable and fits the look you want.

Building a deck is one of the most common large DIY projects. While there’s a lot that goes into it, there’s no reason to be intimidated by the task.

Whatever you choose to make your backyard a little more comfortable, be sure to check out The Outdoor Show, streaming on At Home with Family Handyman, for guidance and inspiration. How to Build a Modern Water Fountain https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-build-a-modern-water-fountain/ Tue, 28 Feb 2023 16:19:37 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=518372 When I think of deep relaxation, the sound of water immediately comes to mind: crashing ocean waves, the trickle of a nearby brook, a cascading waterfall, light rain — you get the idea.

To bring calming sound to your backyard, I’ve designed this sleek backyard water feature using a simple box for a reservoir, a pump and basic plumbing parts to keep the water flowing. It can be disassembled easily and tucked away for the winter or moved around your patio. I dressed mine up with ipe hardwood and a sheet of copper to wrap the reservoir.

You can take these ideas and build a modified version to fit your favorite place to relax.

It drew mostly five-star reviews on Amazon, including from consumers who say their pool services recommended The PoolCleaner. The device attaches to your existing pool pump and filter and sucka debris into the skimmer. Programmed to turn every eight to 10 feet, it’s recommended for pools up to 16×32 feet.

A few negative reviews say The PoolCleaner will not climb stairs and is too bulky to get into corners.

Fh23mar 623 50 160 How To Install An Egress Window

Before You Start

Adding an egress window is a big job, and it’s important to plan your project to meet the building requirements in your location. Here are the steps I took before starting to excavate:

Apply for a permit

This process could take a few weeks. My city required detailed plans of the well, the dimensions of the window and rough opening, the size of the header and a drawing of the property, including the house.

Engineered drawing

The retaining walls that made up our well were tall enough to require an engineer’s approval. I sent my plans to a local engineer who gave me a new drawing with a stamp of approval to include with my permit application. If you buy a manufactured well, this step is likely unnecessary, but your city’s building department makes the final call.

Call the digging hotline

When you’re digging, even just a few inches, call to have underground utilities located and marked.

Digging is dangerous if you don’t know where the utilities are. If you skip this step and hit a gas, water, or power line underground, you’ll risk the lives of yourself and others, and you’ll be on the hook for the costly repairs. So be sure to call 811 before your project. The process varies by state, so call a few days ahead of your project.

Fh23mar 623 50 162 How To Install An Egress Window

Requirements for Egress Windows

Here are the minimum requirements identified by the building code:

 • The opening needs to be 5.7 square feet.
 • The minimum width is 20 inches.
 • The minimum height is 24 inches.
 • The well needs to provide a clear space of 3-ft. x 3-ft. when the window is open.
 • From the inside, the sill height cannot exceed 44 inches

Dig the Window Well

Following my plans, I drew the window well location with marking paint. I rented a mini excavator to make the digging much easier. It was well worth the $450 to avoid hand digging.

Have a plan for the dirt you’re removing; it will be more than you anticipate. We took the nearly 10 cubic yards of dirt to a nearby compost site.

finished DIY Backyard shed

Consider If the Kit Really Fits Your Needs

DIY shed kits are attractive for a bunch of reasons. They allow DIYers to save money while taking on a fun project. But even with the potential for savings, these kits are large investments, and DIYers need to consider if the kit really fits their needs.

The chief concern is size. Many kits are smaller than traditionally-built alternatives, particularly DIY home kits. DIYers may be better off saving money until they can afford a more traditional build.

Also, consider what you’re using the kit for. If it’s for a home, you’ll need to know how much insulation can fit in the walls. In traditional construction, 2×6 lumber with R-19 insulation is the standard for exterior walls.

Undersized lumber in some kits won’t allow for as much insulation, making these homes less efficient. Shopping for a kit that can handle more insulation may be worth it.

True Colors

Eastern Redbud

Eastern redbud is a small native tree found in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4 through 8. Redbuds generally grow to about 20 feet tall and 30 to 35 feet wide at the top. They bloom in early spring before the leaves come out.

Depending on the variety, flower colors vary from pink to dark pink to almost red. Redbuds often grow along the edge of wooded areas in part to full sun and well-drained soil.

Available varieties include ‘Appalachian Red,’ which has dark pink, almost red flowers; ‘Forest Pansy,’ with purple foliage; and ‘Ruby Falls,’ with purple foliage and a weeping form. ‘Ruby Falls’ will be much smaller.

While the redbud puts on a big flower show in the spring, it will sometimes show puckered edges on the leaves if herbicides are sprayed nearby. Redbuds are also considered a short-lived tree. Many die back after about 20 years.

Plant crown imperial bulbs in the fall in well-drained soil in a sunny spot. You’ll enjoy their elegant blooms every year in mid-spring as they return reliably in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5 through 8. Try tucking the bulbs behind a short boxwood or lavender hedge, then watch their tall stalks rise up and bloom just above the hedge.

Amazon’s Affordable, Portable Greenhouse Protects Plants All Winter https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/portable-greenhouse-on-amazon/ Fri, 13 Jan 2023 20:30:00 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=503870 It turns out that moving your plants to the porch (even if it’s covered) during the winter doesn’t exactly keep them alive and thriving. If you’re like me and struggling to upkeep plants that were green and budding during warmer months, then the Koksry Portable Walk-In Greenhouse is here to save the day (and your plants). The three-tier, walk-in portable greenhouse has eight shelves to save all your plants and herbs from getting covered in frost. Plus, the structure can prevent pests from snacking during your harvest season, which you’ll be able to extend thanks to the greenhouse.

There are many benefits to portable greenhouses, beyond extending growing seasons. They allow for certain crops to be grown year-round, even in marginal and city environments, and can be placed inside or outside. In addition to storing plants, you can store gardening tools, seeds and more inside the structure. It’s also lightweight, so you can move it around your outdoor area hassle-free.

Perhaps more than anything, portable greenhouses are used for germinating seeds. With the Koksry greenhouse, you can jumpstart your spring garden if you’re planning on starting seedlings to move outside. By summer, a greenhouse will give extra support to heat-loving vegetables, like tomatoeseggplants and peppers. Even tropical plants that wouldn’t necessarily survive outside of their natural environment can be grown in a greenhouse.

What is a portable greenhouse?

In short, portable greenhouses—like any greenhouse—create relatively warm environments and protect your plant life year-round. Typically, the walls are made of transparent materials, which allow light in and help facilitate a regulated climate that’s ideal for cultivating a variety of plants.

There are several different types of greenhouses that can be found in an assortment of sizes, ranging from mini to industrial ones used to grow large crops. The Koksry greenhouse is larger than a mini one, but more compact and affordable than larger, non-portable greenhouses. The beauty of a portable greenhouse is that it’s easy to transport, so you can move your garden wherever it needs to be. It also comes in handy if you’re doing yard work, completing a landscaping project or moving.

This particular one has a transparent plastic cover that’s waterproof and protects plants from harsh ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can cause plants to burn. Mesh screen windows on both sides regulate internal and external airflow while keeping out pests. It also has a steel pipe and ground nails to stabilize the structure and prevent it from being knocked over by strong winds. Basically, you’re not sacrificing stability for portability with this greenhouse.

Pros

 • Lightweight
 • Easy to set up
 • Affordable
 • UV plastic cover
 • Waterproof
 • Mesh screen windows on each side
 • Roll-up door
 • High-strength connector link
 • Ground nails and rope for stabilization

Cons

 • Shelves aren’t especially sturdy

How to Use a Portable Greenhouse

Because portable greenhouses are often used for germinating seeds, you’ll probably get the most use out of your Koksry greenhouse if you plant seeds inside the greenhouse. Then, during warm, sunny months, you can replant the seedlings into bigger pots and move them out of the greenhouse, if you like.

In addition to seed starting, portable greenhouses are also for cloning plants that are already in your landscape, as the plastic cover traps humidity, which helps a cutting take more successfully. If you create the right microclimate inside, you can grow nearly anything.

Portable greenhouses do tend to require a bit more attention than larger ones. You might consider monitoring the heat and humidity levels, as they can build faster in a smaller space and lead to fungus growth and root rot.

Dusting Plant leaves

Dusting Lets in the Light

Plants make their own food through photosynthesis, harnessing light — sunlight or artificial — to change carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. Plants keep the glucose for food and release oxygen into the air— that’s why they’re so good for the environment. Steinkopf says dust prevents light from reaching the leaves of a plant, reducing its ability to photosynthesize.

Deciphering Tomato Plant Tags: What Do Those Codes Mean? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/deciphering-tomato-plant-tags-what-do-those-codes-mean/ Thu, 05 Jan 2023 18:58:26 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=502057 Last spring, I ran into some neighbors at the local garden center who were shopping for tomato plants. The plant tags contained a lot of useful information, but they weren’t sure what all the codes after the variety name meant. I helped them sort out the codes, and they ended up with the best tomatoes they’d ever grown.

What Is All That Info on Tomato Plant Tags?

Whenever you buy a plant, check the tag, which usually includes the variety name and mature size. In the case of tomatoes, the plant tag may be coded with letters, each related to disease resistance. It should definitely tell you if the tomato plant is indeterminate or determinate.

What Are Indeterminate and Determinate Tomato Plants?

Generally, tomato plants are one or the other. Some are also classified as dwarf.

Indeterminate tomatoes

The most common type, these grow taller all through the season. As they grow they also develop side shoots, called suckers. They generally produce fruit throughout the growing season.

As they grow, reaching six feet or taller, they’ll need a cage or a stake to keep them off the ground.

Determinate tomatoes

These usually produce most of their tomatoes early in the season, within a few weeks, and stop growing at some point. This is great if you want a lot of tomatoes at one time for canning.

Though they don’t grow all summer, they still require some support. A wire cage works fine.

Dwarf tomatoes

According to the Dwarf Tomato Project, these max out at two to four-and-one-half feet, ideal for smaller gardens and containers.

What Do The Code Letters On The Tag Stand For?

Diseases.

Tomatoes are notoriously susceptible to blights, wilts and nematodes. Breeders are always working to create new varieties resistant to diseases and have come up with codes for each malady. When you see these codes on a tag, it means that variety has built-in resistance to the indicated disease. The most common: F for fusarium wilt, V for verticillium wilt and N for nematodes.

If your tomatoes succumbed to a plant disease before the end of the growing season, send a sample to a plant pathology lab for testing. Contact your local cooperative extension service to determine how. Once you know which disease is present in your garden, look for tomato plants resistant to that disease.

What does the code F1 mean?

F1 after a tomato variety name means it’s a hybrid, created by cross-pollinating two varieties. The resulting seeds are designated F1.

Hybrid tomatoes are often more disease-resistant and better tasting. One of the most famous hybrid tomatoes is Big Boy from Burpee.

What Type of Tomato Will the Plant Produce?

Small Red Cherry tomatoes growing in a field

Tomatoes come in various sizes, shapes, and colors. Make sure you know which type of tomato you’re getting when you buy that seedling in the spring. Some common types include:

 • Currant tomatoes: These are the smallest, and are usually the size of jelly beans.
 • Cherry and grape tomatoes: As the name suggests, these are usually the size of cherries and grapes. They’re good for snacking.
 • Roma tomatoes: These are usually oblong with thicker skins, good for canning and salsa making.
 • Slicing tomatoes: These include beefsteak tomatoes, which can be sizable.

All these come in colors ranging from pink to dark red, plus yellow. Some are even striped.

If you’re new to growing tomatoes, try several varieties each year to learn which do well in your garden and taste good to you. Then grow your favorite varieties every year.

And remember to grow your tomato plants in different spots each year. If you grow your tomatoes in containers, fill them with fresh soil each spring. This lessens the chances of your plants succumbing to a blight or wilt left over from the year before.

]]> What’s a Catio and Why Would I Want One? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/what-is-a-catio-backyard-cats/ Fri, 30 Dec 2022 12:28:54 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=500830 I first heard the word catio from my friend who’s a park ranger. She witnesses firsthand the damage outdoor domestic cats do to ecosystems and endangered species, and sees catios — outside enclosures for cats — as the solution.

Cats are the No. 1 threat to birds in the U.S., killing an estimated 2.4 billion every year. That’s 20 percent of the total bird population. Domestic cats allowed to roam outside also kill millions of small mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

Cats are cute to us, but from the perspective of local wildlife, they’re huge apex predators,” says Liz Baessler, senior editor at Gardening Know How.

“That’s why more and more people are opting to install a catio that lets your cat experience the sights, sounds and sensations of being outdoors, all while keeping their would-be prey at a safe distance. It also protects your cat from the dangers of the wide world, from cars to rival cats to the occasional even bigger predator.”

Here’s more about why you might want a catio, and how to make or buying one.

What Is a Catio?

A catio, aka cat patio, is an enclosed structure that lets cats hang out in a safe outdoor environment. Walls are usually mesh or wire, and they often include a cat door. They range from small window boxes to large, complex patios.

Types of Catios

large catio attached to a house

Catios come in many shapes and sizes, from simple wire-mesh boxes to elaborate multi-level playgrounds. They can be DIY, built from a kit or custom constructed by professional catio makers.

“The options for catios are endless,” says Cynthia Chomos, catio designer and founder of Catio Spaces. “If you only have a small area to work with, keep in mind cats love high spaces, and you can add lots of shelves for vertical and horizontal movement in a catio.”

You can also add tunnels around the yard at various elevations for further cat exploration.

Stand-alone catios

Freestanding catios are not attached to the home, so they can be placed anywhere in your yard or garden. One drawback: “Kitty guardians must take their felines and put them in and take them out,” says Yvette Bacha of Hellas Custom Catios. “This is not often requested, as cats usually like to do things on their own terms.”

To solve this dilemma, some people install above-ground tunnels between their home and the catio.

Attached catios

Attached catios often include a pet door from the house, which lets cats go back and forth at their leisure. “This is the best for cats,” says Bacha. “If something scares them outside in the catio, they can run back into the home to their preferred safe spot.”

Attached catios can be as small as removable window or balcony boxes or as big as a porch, which some people convert into a catio, says Robert Johnston, owner of Catio Bob. He recommends the porch conversion. “Larger attached-to-home and freestanding catios with insect screen overlays are great for kitties and human minions as well,” he says.

Catio Benefits

cat in a catio pathway

Catios are a win-win-win for humans, cats and wildlife because:

 • Cat safety: Cats can safely enjoy the outdoors without getting lost, hit by a car or attacked by dogs, other cats and wildlife.
 • Entertainment: Physical and mental stimulation means cats are less likely to be bored and develop bad behaviors.
 • Wildlife: Protecting birds is becoming more urgent as increasing stresses from climate change and habitat over-development threatens many species.
 • Friendliness: Catios help reduce multi-cat issues by adding more territory.
 • Bonding: Outdoor space helps with human-feline interaction and bonding.
 • Disease: When cats eat wildlife, they can contract and spread toxoplasmosis, a brain parasite. That’s harmful to humans (especially pregnant women) and deadly to many wild animals.
 • Smell: You can move the litter box and its odors outside. (Keep an indoor box for when they don’t feel up to going outside.)
 • Money: Keeping your cat safe means avoiding vet bills from injuries or illnesses.
 • Neighborliness: Your neighbors will probably appreciate not having cats in their garden beds or around their bird feeders.
 • Less stress: You’ll have peace of mind knowing your cat is safe and enriched with fresh air, exercise, sunbathing and bird watching.

“We have not heard or experienced any cons of a catio,” says Bacha. “Even clients who had cats who previously roamed the neighborhood unsupervised said their cats acclimated well to the new enclosure.”

Catio Faux Pas

The only way to go wrong with a catio is failing to consider your cat’s habits and comfort.

“Catios can be tailored to a cat’s specific needs, so it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach,” says Chomos. “For example, mobility or sight-challenged cats will benefit from design elements such as ramps and railings, and soft landings such as grass or outdoor rugs.”

Also, renters should avoid securing a catio to their building without prior landlord approval.

How To Build a Catio

cat inside a catio looking out into a backyard

Before you start, plan out the design, size and features — things like scratching posts, climbing structures and built-in toys.

“Make sure the catio is located in a safe and secure area, and consider how your cat will be able to access it,” says Lance Harding, owner of Cat-Topia. “Also, ensure that the catio is secure and cannot be easily escaped from or accessed by other animals.”

Building a catio is similar to building a house. A level foundation is key, and use pressure-treated 4x4s for the frame if you’re building on grass.

Some other aspects to keep in mind:

 • Local building codes and Homeowner’s Association rules;
 • Appropriate mesh for cat safety and area predators (usually galvanized welded wire);
 • Durability and look of the wooden frame (natural, stained or painted);
 • Whether the cat can dig underneath it to escape;
 • Whether you want a mesh roof or a solid one to keep out the elements and offer shade;
 • Type of floor — grass, decking or pavers;
 • Personalizing it to your cat’s curiosities, activities and physical capabilities with elements like cedar shelves, perches for lounging and cat-safe plants;
 • Steering clear of hazards like vinyl-coated wire (choking hazard) and artificial grass (too hot);
 • Environmental conditions. “Location is key,” says Chomos. “Keep in mind cats love basking in the sun, so an area with partial sun exposure is ideal. Polycarbonate roofing provides year-round enjoyment, and shade can be created with awnings, sailcloth, cat cubbies or a bench to lay under.”

Catios for Sale

If you’re not feeling motivated to DIY, there are a lot of options for buying a catio. “Make sure the catio is large enough for your cat to move around comfortably and has enough space for them to climb, play and rest,” says Harding.

Also consider:

 • The durability of the materials and ease of maintenance;
 • Your budget;
 • Features that appeal to your cat, like scratching posts and climbing structures.

Here are some of our picks:

 • Best budget moveable catio: Aivituvin Cat House, with wheels and a waterproof asphalt roof, for less than $300.
 • Best window catio splurge: Cat-Topia Kittens Playpen Catio, with room for two cats, plus a ladder, solar lanterns and pleasant wooden aesthetic.
 • Best DIY catio manual: Hellas Custom Catios, with chapters on building codes, materials, location, construction, kitty bling and other vital catifications.
 • Best DIY catio plans: Catio Spaces comprehensive designs plans, including window boxes, tunnels, large enclosures and litter box spaces.

For all types of catios, Bacha, Johnston and Harding‘s companies make custom DIY kits to fit your home, budget and cat’s unique personality. And if you’re in Seattle, Catio Spaces can custom-make you one.

“You won’t regret it,” says Johnston. “Like all my customers say, and I mean all, it’s the best thing they ever did for their kitties and themselves.”

What Is Winter Sowing? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/what-is-winter-sowing/ Thu, 22 Dec 2022 18:39:37 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=501284 It’s winter, which for many means hosting parties for family and friends, removing snow from driveways and serving platters stacked high with sweets. While all of these can be wonderful aspects of the season, avid gardeners may find themselves counting down the minutes till spring, eager to return to their beloved beds.

Sure, determined gardeners can keep houseplants and start seeds indoors, but for those with limited square footage, finding enough space for all their flowers can be challenging. This limitation paired with the harsh conditions outside can leave gardeners feeling helpless. Fortunately, there’s a way to sow seeds outdoors in the winter, using just a few commonly discarded containers.

What Is Winter Sowing?

Winter sowing is a process by which a gardener plants seeds in empty milk jugs, thereby increasing their chances of surviving the cold weather. The milk jugs act like mini greenhouses, trapping heat and protecting the seeds. With this method, you’ll never have to dig holes in the cold, frozen soil again!

What Are the Best Seeds for Winter Sowing?

Technically, both perennials and annuals can be winter-sown, though cold-hardy seeds will yield the best success rates. Check seed packets for phrases such as “self-sowing,” “direct-sowing,” “cold hardy” or “pre-chill” to determine if the seed can be winter-sown.

When Can I Start Winter Sowing?

When to begin winter sowing depends on two factors: where you live and what you want to grow. Please note that winter sowing is most effective for gardeners in zones 4 through 8.

In general, winter sowing can be started anytime from the Winter Solstice (now) until a couple of weeks before the relevant zone’s last frost. The specific timing depends on the needs of the individual seeds selected.

Seeds that require long germination periods, like flowering perennials, winter vegetables and native shrubs can be sown right away (December and January). Cold-hardy perennials and annuals will typically be best sown in the first months of the New Year (January and February). Tender annuals that require more consistent warmth are best sown just before the last frost (March or April).

How Do I Make Containers for Winter Sowing?

Variety of plastic bottles protect the seedlings in an outdoor garden

To begin winter sowing, you’ll need a few materials to create your containers:

 • Milk jugs (one per plant type)
 • Scissors, box cutter and/or Exacto knife
 • Drill (optional)
 • Water
 • Potting mix
 • Seeds
 • Duct tape
 • Permanent marker

First, clean the jugs and cut them in half below the handle to create a bottom and a lid. If desired, you can leave a “hinge” piece of plastic uncut beneath the handle. Drill or cut drainage holes into the bottom of each jug and remove their caps.

Moisten the potting mix so that it just holds into a ball when packed. Fill the bottom of the jugs with four to six inches of the moistened potting mix. Sow the seeds in the potting mix as instructed on the seed packets. Use only one seed type per jug and space them appropriately.

Now, reseal the jug shut with duct tape, and label each jug with the plant type and date of sowing. Place the jugs outside in a sunny spot with low wind.

How Do I Care for My Winter-Sown Plants?

As with regularly sown seeds, winter-sown seeds must be monitored to ensure their health. Check regularly to make sure the potting mix stays consistently moist and water the plants as necessary. If the seedlings start to look scorched, move them to a location with partial sun. Don’t worry too much about snow or rain; snow can provide welcome insulation and rain will save you a day of watering.

Once the seedlings have a couple of sets of mature leaves and the weather warms, it’s time to start hardening them off. Either drill extra ventilation holes in the top half of the jugs or open them during the day. (Depending on your conditions, they may need to be closed at night.) If the seedlings grow crowded, thin them out by moving them to other sheltered containers.

What Do I Do When Spring Has Finally Sprung?

By the time spring arrives, hopefully, you will have a lush milk jug garden of seedlings. Now you can simply use the guidelines on the backs of the seed packets to transplant your seedlings into your main garden. While you’re at it, complete a few more off-season gardening tasks and give yourself a pat on the back for a successful sow!

How To Clean an Outdoor Fire Pit https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-clean-an-outdoor-fire-pit/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-clean-an-outdoor-fire-pit/#respond Thu, 08 Dec 2022 18:26:20 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=496737 When was the last time you cleaned your fire pit? For most people, that answer is probably never.

"Everyone should clean outdoor fire pits," says Tim Jankowski, president of Aladdin's Cleaning and Restoration and an expert in fire prevention. That's because dirty fire pits harbor flammable debris that can build up over time.

Fire pit manufacturers like Uniflame and Tiki Brand agree, and recommend cleaning fire pits regularly. Jankowski suggests cleaning yours in the spring and again in the fall before closing it up, or storing it if it's a portable model. Clean it out once during the summer, too, as debris and soot build up, says Jankowski.

Before you start, make sure the fire has been out for at least a day. I have a permanently-installed cast iron fire pit, but this soap-and-water technique will work for any metal fire pit, in-ground or portable. "The biggest hazard with these types of fire pits is ensuring they don't rust," says Jankowski.

What if you have a brick or stone fire pit? "Dishwashing liquid is actually one of the best solvents to clean a brick or stone pit or fireplace," Jankowski says. Use a good strong bristle brush, and follow up with a wet-dry vacuum to remove the debris and soapy water.

How To Drain a Pool https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-drain-a-pool/ Tue, 15 Nov 2022 20:10:01 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=491973 Imagine opening the tap and watching those thousands of gallons of in-ground pool water drain away. What a costly, wasteful undertaking, right? Fortunately for most pool owners, completely draining an in-ground pool is something they’ll never have to do.

But for in-ground pool owners in cold climates, partial draining is necessary for winterizing a pool. Here’s a look at when you might need to let some of the water out.

Why Should You Drain Your Pool?

Ask almost any pool professional if you should completely empty your in-ground pool, and the answer will be a resounding no.

“I never recommend a full drain of any swimming pool unless you are being advised by a pool professional,” says John Bodden, an operations support advisor for America’s Swimming Pool Company (ASP). “Totally draining a pool should be done only for repairs and only a last option.”

Without the weight of the water to stabilize it, Bodden says, the pool walls could collapse, or the pool will pop out of the ground. But draining an in-ground pool isn’t an all-or-nothing task, at least not in normal circumstances.

In areas where temperatures routinely drop below 41 degrees, draining some water as part of passive winterization will help protect the structure, pipes and equipment from freeze damage. It also prevents the potential for overflow should the pool water freeze and expand.

How To Drain an In-Ground Pool

When you drain an in-ground pool for passive winterization, you lower the waterline to just below the skimmer level and flush water from the pipes. The key is not taking out so much water that you compromise the pool structure. Bodden outlines the following steps:

 • With the pool system off, open your backwash valve (or drain line if you have one).
 • Close off all skimmer lines with a plug or the valve(s) on the suction side of the pump.
 • Ensure you’ll be drawing water from only the main drain (if equipped).
 • Turn on the pool pump to begin lowering the water level.
 • Once the water level is below the skimmer inlet, shut down the pump and equipment.
 • Make sure to shut off all pool equipment and light breakers so low water levels don’t damage any equipment.

At this point, most cold-climate pool owners cover their pool for the winter. It can be a ready-made cover to fit your particular pool, or a heavy-duty tarp held in place with water bags. Be sure to keep snow from accumulating, melting and freezing on top of your pool cover. Remove fresh snow with a leaf blower or long-handled, wide push broom.

You can also install a pool air pillow under the cover. This creates a bow in the middle of the pool so snow will roll off instead of accumulating. Another option: A pool cover pump that activates when there’s water on top of the cover.

Bodden says before you start, check with your local municipality about where you can drain all that pool water. It may not allow chlorinated or salt pool water into flood or street drains.

And draining into your own yard isn’t necessarily a safe option. The water might harm your lawn and some trees. Not to mention, it may be bad for birds, small animals and beneficial insects that call your lawn home.

“A pool professional can advise you on these questions,” says Bodden.

How Much Does It Cost To Drain a Pool?

If you DIY, the costs are minimal. Bodden says some in-ground pools lack systems for backwash or self-draining, so you’ll need a submerged pump attached to a garden hose.

If you hire a pro, expect to pay around $115 per hour for what usually amounts to a couple of hours of work.

How To Restore a Hardwood Deck https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/restore-hardwood-deck/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/restore-hardwood-deck/#respond Tue, 15 Nov 2022 18:30:03 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=491216 Some people like their hardwood decks to turn gray naturally. Others prefer to retain or bring back a deck's deep colors and textures. We decided to keep this deck we built for my mom as vibrant as possible by applying a penetrating oil finish.

Protectants like this penetrate the fibers of the wood to shield it from UV rays and resist moisture, which keeps it from cracking and drying out. Regular treatments every two to three years can also significantly extend the life expectancy of a deck.

Note: If your deck is new, do your first treatment three to six months after installation, giving the deck enough time to acclimate to the climate and environment. Then apply again a year later before shifting to the every-two-to-three years schedule.

Pro tip: For optimal results, do this project when the forecast calls for at least 72 hours without rain.

]]>
Clean and prepare the surface
 • Sweep the deck of any loose debris, like leaves and dirt.
 • Heavily wet the deck, then apply the cleaning solution per the manufacturer’s instructions. Remove or cover bordering metal surfaces and any items or plants stored under the deck that could be harmed by the cleaner or the oil stain. Dampen surrounding vegetation with water.
 • Use the soft-bristle scrub brush to clean the surface of the deck.
 • Thoroughly rinse off the deck with the hose, then wait at least 24 hours for it to dry. The deck must be completely dry prior to applying the protectant coating.
 • On the dry deck, gently sand off any stains by hand (use 220-grit sandpaper) or an orbital sander. If a stain remains, it may be too deep in the wood grain to fully remove.
 • Sweep any remaining debris off of the deck.

Pro tip: While inspecting the deck for stains, fasten loose screws and sand away splinters.
