When I moved here, I was eaten alive by the invisible no-see-ums, swarmed by gnats and targeted by mosquitoes.

One thing was sure: I needed an eco-friendly mosquito repellent for the yard that wasn’t going to harm me, my pets or the pollinators. Bees and butterflies are important to me, but the bugs that really bugged me simply had to go.

To protect myself, I resorted to wearing long sleeves, jeans, hats, and rubber boots up to my knees. As the summer temperatures rose, I knew this wasn’t sustainable and I needed to find a solution to my bug problem. This is where the Wonderside Flea and Tick Spray comes in the picture.

What is Wondercide Flea & Tick Spray

Lightning Bug

Wondercide Spray kills and repels ants, fleas, ticks and mosquitos at every lifecycle stage. This yard spray also takes care of Japanese beetles, crickets and gnats without using harmful chemicals.

When you’re ready to use the eco-friendly Wondercide Spray, simply attach the nozzle to your garden hose. You’ll quickly cover 5000 square feet without having to wait for a re-entry period. It’s safe and non-toxic to wildlife, humans, pets, bees, and butterflies.

I love that a few women in Texas were on a mission to find a pet-safe alternative to the devastating side effects of pesticide exposure. They were invited to pitch their product on Shark Tank and now it’s available to us!

Wondercide Outdoor Pest Control Product Features

Wondercide Spray is a safe and natural product that won’t harm the environment, pets or people. It’s so safe that you can spray and play without any waiting time.

Wondercide also makes indoor pest control spray and personal insect repellent in four different scents; cedarwood, lemongrass, rosemary and my favorite, peppermint. Plus, the brand has tested their products for efficacy and they are on-par with conventional insect repellents.

The product is safe to use around lakes, ponds and creeks, but tuck your chickens in while you spray to protect their sensitive respiratory systems.

How We Tested It

Butterfly Friendly Edit

The first time I ordered Wondercide Yard Spray, I also ordered sample sizes of the people and pet insect repellent as well as a bar of dog shampoo

As soon as the products arrived, I was chomping at the bit to try them out. Following the directions, I sprayed my entire lawn and the side of my house, including the window wells where spiders like to spin their webs. Per the instructions, I sprayed again a few days later.

Good-bye tall boots and long pants and hello flip-flops and shorts! With a healthy coating of Wondercide Spray on my lawn, I could finally enjoy summer pest-free.

The real test, however, was at my lake cottage where the mosquitos constantly swarm. I was certain they were breeding in a massive colony under my shady deck. After spraying the Wondercide Spray, we were able to enjoy dinner on the deck without being bitten. Again, we repeated the process a few days later to take care of any stragglers, and once every month thereafter. We were impressed with the long-term results, and will continue to use the product to keep pests at bay.

The sprayer covers a wide area, so treating your yard is fast and easy. Since it is recommended to avoid spraying while pollinators are active, I usually steer clear of the gardens and flower beds. Even though Wondercide is food-grade, I avoid the vegetable garden as a precaution.

For best results, be sure to use the product as directed, starting with two applications a few days apart. Avoid treating the area before rain, as this is a water soluble biodegradable product.

FAQ

Wondercide 2

How do I get rid of mosquitoes in my yard without harming pets?

To get rid of pests without harming pets, avoid chemical formulas with toxic ingredients. Using a natural product like Wondercide is the best option. If you’re unsure if a product is okay to use around pets, please consult with your veterinarian before using it.

Is there a lawn spray that is safe for bees and butterflies?

Yes, there is a lawn spray that is safe for bees and butterflies. The Wondercide Flea and Tick Spray does not harm birds, bees or butterflies. However, caution should be taken to avoid spraying while pollinators are active.

Can I spray my own yard for ticks?

Yes, you can spray your own yard for ticks. It is a cost-effective alternative to using a commercial pest control company. Most commercial pest control companies charge hundreds of dollars to treat your property. These companies are licensed to use toxic chemicals, which effectively kills mosquitoes and ticks.

However, these chemicals may pose a hazard to pollinators and pets. If you decide to spray your yard yourself, you’ll be able to pick a spray that meets your needs without breaking the bank or harming animals.

What Amazon Reviewers Had to Say

Bee Friendly

Jessica Seely reviewed Wondercide on Amazon saying, “I live in FL and bought this right before hurricane Ian to try to help with bugs because as I said…Florida. But THANKFULLY I waited till after the storm because we and everyone around has standing water in their yard. ABSOLUTE breeding ground for bugs. Felt very plague-ish, So yes I used double the amount needed but IT WORKS, maybe I didn’t need to go hog crazy but I am so happy with it, even having it on repeat order.”

“Works great on mosquitoes,” says SP, a verified Amazon customer. “We have a 1500 sq ft backyard with a swamp behind the yard. We get tons of black flies and mosquitoes after the sun goes behind the woods. We didn’t want to use any dangerous chemicals as we have a 7-yr old often playing in the yard. Wondericide worked amazingly. Sprayed only on the plants just beyond our yard and that itself was sufficient. For the first time in 4 years since we have been here, we were outside sitting on the garden bench after sunset.”

Michelle gave the Wondercide spray five stars saying, “This is the best product I have ever bought. I was skeptical about trying this but I’m so very happy that I did. I have 3 dogs and 1 cat and none of them have had a single flea or tick. It’s so much safer and cheaper than going to the vet for medicine for the fleas and ticks. I will definitely be buying this product again guaranteed”

Product Comparison Mosquito Repellent for Yard

You can find different types of pest repellents like sprays, candles, plants and ultrasonic devices that may help get rid of insects. However, a spray is the best option to treat the entire yard, especially if you have a lot of ground to cover.

Concerned about being eco-friendly? Wondercide encourages reusing the sturdy plastic spray bottle that the repellent comes in. Admittedly, I accumulated five empty bottles before I bought the concentrate and refilled the sprayers. I decided to bite the bullet and purchased the big 128-ounce concentrate, which lasted me through the summer and beyond.

To get started, consider buying the Refill Starter Kit bundle with the ready-to-use reusable applicator and the 16-ounce concentrate. This will give you three treatments and cover up to 5000 square feet.

Want to save money? Shop for concentrates and bundles, or take advantage of the Chewy and Wondercide auto-ship plans.

Final Verdict

The Wondercide Spray isn’t just a mosquito repellent for your yard—it protects the entire family (including pets).

True confession: I am a Wondercide junkie. I keep a stash of my beloved spray tucked away in my basement (if you couldn’t tell by the many empty bottles in the cover image). With the help of this spray, I haven’t seen a spider in my house in a while, and I’m not afraid to show skin in the backyard. Plus, my gardens are buzzing with bees and butterflies, and the organic vegetables and flowers are thriving. You don’t have to compromise to get proper protection for your yard.

Where to Buy the Wondercide Flea and Tick Spray

I highly recommend Wondercide Flea and Tick Spray to eradicate pesky bugs in your yard. Test my favorite Wondercide product for yourself by purchasing it at retailers like Wondercide, Chewy and Walmart.

Which Natural Weed Killers Will Work Best for You? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/earth-friendly-weed-killers/ Mon, 06 Mar 2023 19:24:37 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=521268 Undoubtedly you’ve read or heard reports about the toxic chemicals in herbicides and their long-term effects on us and the environment. As a result, environmentally friendly products with active ingredients like vinegar, salt, soap and essential oils are gaining in popularity.

With more organic weed killers hitting the market every growing season, I chatted with an expert about what they are and how they work.

Meet The Expert

Heather Johnson Headshot Bw

Heather Johnson is the lead horticulturist at Bachman’s Floral and Garden in Minneapolis, Minn., where she specializes in diagnosing and managing plant diseases in everything from turf to pine trees.

She discovered her love of gardening at a young age, which led her to a degree in plant biology from the University of Minnesota and a master’s in plant pathology from the University of California-Davis. Johnson says even in her spare time, she’s consumed by plants. “I currently have over 100 houseplants and spend a little time every day tending to them,” she says.

Choosing The Right Herbicide

Crabgrass Ground Ivy And Dandelion

Whatever the time of year or the conditions, you can treat unwanted weeds or grass in environmentally friendly ways — from preemergent to post-emergent, selective and nonselective varieties. But read labels and choose products with care.

“A lot of the organic options are burn-down herbicides, meaning the roots will remain intact and be able to regrow new shoots later,” Johnson says. “[And] salt and vinegar can remain in the soil after killing the intended weeds, which can affect the growth of wanted plants in the area later on.”

To choose what’s best for your lawn or garden, Johnson suggests you start by answering these questions:

What Type of Weeds Are You Trying To Remove?

Common weeds Johnson say most homeowners struggle to control are dandelions, creeping Charlie and crabgrass. The first two are broadleaf weeds. “If your lawn is overrun with these, it’s more likely that the health of the lawn is being impacted, and lawn care besides just weed removal needs to be done,” Johnson said.

The crabgrass problem is so widespread that companies have developed entire lines of herbicides to eliminate it. Though toxic, these can be effective when used correctly. However, Johnson says, “same as with other weeds, if your lawn is overrun with crabgrass, then there are other health issues that need to be addressed.”

How Many Weeds Are You Targeting?

In cases where weeds haven’t overtaken the lawn or appeared in large clusters, Johnson prefers hand weeding with a tool. “It allows me to dig up the entire weed without the potential of damaging the lawn,” she says.

On the other hand, if the whole lawn is overrun with weeds, she suggests “reseeding along with testing the soil to understand the health of the grass and what nutrients may be needed to amend it.”

When Are You Applying the Weed Killer?

“Some weeds are best handled preemergence, and some weeds are best handled post-emergence,” says Johnson. “Crabgrass can be handled pre- or post-emergence, with the most effective time being preemergence, in April or May, to avoid harming the lawn.”

Broadleaf weeds are best handled post-emergence, she says, “as long as it’s before they flower and spread.”

Earth-Friendly Weed Killers Worth Checking Out

Espoma Weed Preventer Plus Lawn Food

Espoma Organic Weed Preventer Lawn Food For All Grasses Ecomm Acehardware.com

Espoma Organic Weed Preventer Plus Lawn Food is the best environmentally friendly product for established lawns. It’s made of pure corn gluten meal, so it’s safe for children and pets to play on even immediately after application.

Besides inhibiting weed growth, this product also feeds the lawn, ensuring it stays green and healthy. Johnson says organic and preemergent lawn products are “typically a fertilizer or germination inhibitor that won’t kill already established grass but will prevent any new plants from germinating.”

For best results, apply the Espoma Organic Weed Preventer twice a year, once in early spring and again in early fall.

A.D.I.O.S Selective Bio-Herbicide

Adios Concentrate 1.14 Gallon Ecomm Walmart.com

A.D.I.O.S. Selective Bio-Herbicide is becoming increasingly popular in parts of the United States where conventional herbicides are restricted. Salt, its active ingredient, can be used against broadleaf weeds like dandelions, creeping Charlie and thistles.

A.D.I.O.S. meets all USDA organic standards and has been approved in commercial organic farming. But use sparingly. Overuse of salt-based products can negatively affect the quality of soil in the long run.

Green Gobbler 20% Vinegar Weed Killer

Fh23apr 624 55 M02 1

Green Gobbler 20% Vinegar Weed Killer is a potent, nonselective vinegar-based product. It’s made from ethanol distilled from corn grain and a concentrated vinegar containing four times the acetic acid of traditional household vinegar.

Biodegradable and nontoxic, this Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) certified formula will safely remove all types of weeds from driveways, sidewalks and mulch beds.

Most environmentally friendly weed killers must be sprayed directly on a growing weed so the active ingredients are absorbed. Johnson suggests using “nonselective sprays such as this in an isolated area, where it’s easy to target individual weeds.”

Shop Now

Make Your Own All Natural Weed Killer

A mixture of vinegar, salt and dish soap can be an effective spot treatment for weeds, according to Johnson. Concentrated vinegar works because it’s stronger than the household variety, usually at near 20% acetic acid.

The salt and acetic acid present in vinegar cause unwanted plants to dehydrate, wither and die. And the dish soap enhances the effectiveness by breaking down the plant’s outer layer (cuticle).

Mix one gallon of vinegar, one ounce of dish soap and one cup of salt in a plastic bottle and spray directly on weeds. Apply the mixture on a sunny day with no wind. Because vinegar-based products are nonselective weed killers, they will harm nearby plants if you don’t spray carefully. “If used in small amounts, this shouldn’t affect the soil long term,” Johnson said.

Eliminating Weeds Without Weed Killers

Gettyimages 494007787 Nicola Tree

If you’re still feeling uneasy about using any weed killer, environmentally friendly or not, other means are available to do the job.

Try pouring boiling water on sidewalk, driveway or patio weeds. The water scalds the unwanted weed, and any runoff will cool on the impervious surface before it reaches other plants.

To eradicate weeds from nonflammable areas like cracks in sidewalks and gravel driveways, a propane torch is another effective alternative. Weeds growing on dry or combustible materials should never be torched. Nor should poison ivy or other poisonous plants because their smoke can cause serious allergic reactions.

For large areas of your yard, or between rows of vegetables in your planter boxes, consider solarizing or smothering the soil.

To solarize, place a transparent plastic tarp over the soil. The tarp prevents water absorption while heating the soil and ultimately killing all vegetation. To smother, place layers of newspaper or old shower curtains on the soil to block the sun and moisture.

One of the most effective ways to maintain a weed-free lawn is by following a lawn care schedule. Johnson recommends keeping a lawn calendar that outlines when to do each maintenance task, like mowing, fertilizing and thatching.

“Following those tips and hand-removing weeds when they are present is a good way to mitigate weeds without the use of any chemicals,” she says. If your lawn is more than 50% weeds, Johnson said it’s best to reseed the whole lawn.

Reporting for Duty: The Cub Cadet Riding Mower Makes Lawn Care Easy https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/cub-cadet-riding-mower/ Fri, 03 Mar 2023 19:04:57 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=518329 Thinking about purchasing a new riding mower to achieve all your lush lawn dreams? While John Deere is a typical go-to brand for riding mowers, a Cub Cadet Riding Mower should be on your list of selections to consider.

Not only does Cub Cadet offer excellent quality machines at great price points, but they also carry both electric and gas-powered mowers. Cub Cadet’s gas-powered riding mowers are powerful enough for those with large yards and fields. On the other hand, electric Cub Cadet Riding Mowers offer a battery-powered function, which means a quieter ride with zero emissions.

To decide on the best option, consider the area you’ll need to cover and the cost of gas versus electricity. Regardless of the version you choose, Cub Cadet mowers come with a best-in-class three-year, unlimited-hour warranty.

What is a Cub Cadet Riding Mower?

Cub Cadet is an American company that manufactures and sells outdoor power equipment, including riding mowers. Currently, there are three Cub Cadet Riding Mowers types: lawn and garden tractors, zero-turn mowers and electric riding mowers.

Lawn and garden tractors are the highest-powered versions of riding mowers that Cub Cadet offers. They’re best for larger areas and come with various attachments and accessories for year-round versatility and utility.

Zero-turn riding mowers allow users to get mowing jobs done 50% faster and are engineered to handle a range of terrains. They can cover up to five acres, with steering wheel options that make the user experience easier.

Electric riding mowers offer the same powerful performance with zero emissions, thanks to a powerful and convenient lithium-ion battery. The absence of a gas engine makes these machines some of the quietest on the market.

How to Use a Cub Cadet Riding Mower

Cub Cadet Riding Mowers come in gas and electric versions, meaning you will either need to charge the batteries or fill the tank with gas before using it for the first time. Electric model batteries are fully charged in four hours and last up to one and a half hours or up to two acres. On average, gas-powered Cub Cadet Riding Mowers use about three gallons of gas for every 2 hours of use.

As with any new machinery, it’s essential to  thoroughly read the user manual before use. To help you learn how to use your Cub Cadet riding mower, we recommend viewing the instructional videos and troubleshooting tips on the Cub Cadet website.

Here are the stats on some of their most popular models that will help you decide which machine is right for your job:

Cub Cadet Electric Mini Riding Mower

Cc30e Electric Mini Riding Mower Ecomm Cubcadet.com

The Cub Cadet Electric Mini Riding Mower has a powerful 56-volt max lithium-ion battery that can be charged using a standard 110-Volt outlet. The battery lets you mow up to one acre (or for one hour) on a single charge without power fade, and it recharges in about four hours. As with all electric machines, there’s no need for oil, filer or spark plug changes (which can become costly).

Five-star reviewer Clark R. says assembly of his Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro Gas Powered Riding Lawn Mower was “straightforward and painless.”

“After checking all fluids, pins, etc, some gas and fired right up,” he writes. “What use to take over an hour with the old 30 inch cutter now takes 20 minutes with far less gas consumption.”

J. Blair is on his second Cub Cadet Riding Mower (a CC30E Electric Mini Riding Mower) and says, “Cub Cadet never has disappointed. This is my second cub cadet tractor, and I believe there isn’t a better one out there.”

When it comes to using the electric version, Maeck Dude says, “The Cub [CC30E Electric] mini is amazing. It mows like a champ, even the thick stuff. The mulcher works like a charm, and the electric motor is easy to clean and lasts over an hour. I would highly recommend it for towing stuff as well. Improve the Health of Your Yard with the Sun Joe Dethatcher https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/sun-joe-dethatcher/ Thu, 02 Mar 2023 18:29:26 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=519634 It’s no surprise that homeowners love using the Sun Joe Dethatcher, as it’s proven to be one of the most popular dethatchers on the market

For the DIYer who wants to improve their yard’s health, the Sun Joe Dethatcher is a fast and cost-efficient way to break up the debris taking over your lawn. This powerful electric unit saves hours of back-breaking work. In just one pass, you’ll groom your greens like a pro with the Sun Joe Dethatcher.

Professional lawn care experts agree that having more than one-half inch of thatch can begin to smother the roots of grass, block nutrients and enables the development of things like root rot, insects and fungus.

Of course, you can use a manual thatch rake or tow-behind dethatcher for your riding mower, but this corded unit is a solid solution for a small to midsize yard.

What is the Sun Joe Dethatcher?

The Sun Joe Dethatcher is an electric dethatcher and scarifier suitable for small to midsize yards. Using steel spring tines, this dethatcher automatically rakes a 13-inch path with the help of the powerful 12-amp motor. This dethatcher is lightweight and easy to maneuver yet has the drive of a workhorse.

The scarifier blades and rake tines are easily swapped, depending on your turf’s needs, making this a dual-purpose machine. This dethatcher not only removes thatch, but it also prepares your lawn for reseeding, tackles problem zones and helps keep your grass healthy all year long.

If you can’t be tethered by a cord, Sun Joe also makes a battery-powered cordless dethatcher.

Pros

  • Affordably priced
  • Easy to maneuver
  • Adjustable depth
  • No gas, oil or fumes
  • Powerful performance
  • 2-year warranty

Cons

  • Hard to clean
  • Small catch bag

How to Use a Sun Joe Dethatcher

Removing built-up thatch with the Sun Joe Dethatcher is as easy as mowing your lawn. Assembly is simple—after unboxing, just attach the handle. Before you begin, choose between the five adjustable tine depths, plug it in and hold on tight! This pint-sized unit has plenty of giddy-up and go.

The dethatcher easily moves forward, dislodging the thatch and bagging it seamlessly. It can also be used without the bag; however, the resulting piles of debris must be removed from the grass. Most users simply collect the thatch with a bagging lawn mower.

The Best Sun Joe Dethatcher Reviews on Walmart

Verified Walmart customer, Alan, is happy with his purchase.

“Go For It! Nothing to lose,” Alan explained. “I wasn’t very hopeful about such an inexpensive machine. WOW! Was I in for a great surprise. This dethatcher was light, easy to handle and pulled out bags and bags of thatch with ease! I did my entire 3/4 acre yard, two passes at 90 degrees to each other in about 6 hours. The grass catcher fills up way too fast to be practical so I ended up picking up the thatch with my lawn mower. It has been very seldom that I’ve been so happy with a tool purchase. If caring for your lawn is high on your list…. I strongly encourage purchasing this tool.”

I could actually almost hear my yard sighing with relief to get the tons of thatch off it,” customer Kleenk8 explained. “My yard had not been thatched for years. It is looking tremendous after two short weeks.”

Mike, another Walmart customer says, “Easy to use. Very powerful. Better alternative to renting a machine if you plan to use more than once. Great value.”

Power King Chipper Shredder: A Beast of a Chipper https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/power-king-chipper-shredder/ Wed, 01 Mar 2023 14:49:51 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=517666 A top-performing product with five-star reviews, the Power King Chipper eats brush for lunch. The Power King Chipper is royalty when it comes to residential wood chippers, as this beast devours five-inch branches without a hiccup.

Owning a wood chipper will save you time and money and make tree care easier in the long haul. Why wait to hire someone expensive when you could do it yourself?

What is the Power King Chipper Shredder Kit?

Power King Chipper Shredder Kit

It’s no wonder owners call this powerful chipper a beast. The Power King Chipper boasts an impressive 14-horsepower, four-cycle Kohler engine. Plus, the heavy-duty blades can demolish lengthy limbs without incident.

With its large hopper, you can feed this hungry beast with ease. We also love the rotating shoot, which puts the finely shredded mulch wherever you want.

Perfect for homeowners with heavily-wooded or large properties, the Power King can roam your jungle (er, yard) for its next meal. This machine is easily towable with an all-terrain vehicle or small tractor.

The Power King Chipper Kit includes an extendable wheelbase, a removable tool-free tow bar, a weatherproof cover and extra blades. Power King also offers a similar model with an electric start, but it is hundreds of dollars more.

  • Extended axle
  • Comes with extra blades

How to Use the Power King Chipper

Safety first, please. Grab your goggles and gloves—this is a powerful machine. Place the chipper on a flat surface and adjust the exit shoot to direct the output of the pulverized material. Then, simply feed the branches with the large diameter side first. When the beast begins to chew, let go of the branch, as auto-feed should kick in.

It will be greedy for more, but don’t stuff it too full. Make sure to allow it to chew before adding additional material. With a little practice, feeding your beast will become your favorite chore. For more information, we recommend referring to the user guide for in-depth start up and maintenance procedures.

The Best Power King Chipper Reviews

Home Depot customer, David says, “A workhorse. Took care of everything I threw in it and then some from storm damage on 8+ acres. Towed great using the wide wheel base set up. Set up was easy but a second set of hands is needed. Solid piece of equipment.”

Ed Abel gave the Power King five stars, “Much Better than Hoped! I was hesitant to start with 2″ thick branches; I incorrectly assumed that the chipper must at least stall if the entire branch were tossed in. Whoa! It’s gone without any hesitation. At first I held onto, and slowly fed, the Juniper branches thinking that they would stall and jam the blades. The machine told me to “let go”; so I did and the chips flew out the chute. Again, no stall nor jam. Soon the 3″ and 4″ limbs were being chewed up and spit out. I could relax, ‘feed the machine’, and watch the brush pile disappear. Satisfied.”

BigDibbs echoes many user reviews, “This chipper is a beast, easy to put together and operate. I use a hand dolly with a hitch to move it around by hand and it is easy. Well balanced and easy to maneuver around. Shredded two large trees in one afternoon. Not designed for shredding smaller items but does chop it up a bit, though it prefers larger branches.”

Dethatcher vs. Lawn Sweeper: What’s the Difference? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/dethatcher-vs-lawn-sweeper/ Wed, 01 Mar 2023 05:05:50 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=517815 Spring isn’t just a good time to get your house clean and ready for summer. After a tough winter, your yard could use some cleanup, too.

If you’ve got a well-established lawn that’s starting to get a little yellow or tired, the problem might be thatch—a heavy mat of organic material that develops between the grass and the soil underneath. Thatch isn’t necessarily a bad thing! It can hold in water and nutrients, keeping grass healthy and resilient. But when the thatch gets too thick, it can hold in insects and weeds as well, and it can keep your grass from reaching moisture and nutrients in the soil below.

To check, dig a small test patch or take a core sample. If the thatch—the brown area between the green grass and the dirt—is more than 1/2-inch thick, you’ve got too much thatch. Dethatching your lawn can refresh your grass and get it ready for the hot, dry days of summer.

If the issue isn’t thick thatch, it’s still a good idea to clean debris from your lawn to give it a fresh start before summer arrives. That’s where a lawn sweeper comes in handy. The last of the fall leaves, twigs and sticks that fell in winter storms—and that thick mat of grass clippings from your first big mow of the season—might be too much for a bagging lawn mower to handle. A lawn sweeper replaces a rake, making quick work of cleaning up the grass and getting rid of things that might hamper good growth. You can also use some lawn sweepers to clean paved areas, like driveways or sidewalks.

What’s the Difference Between a Dethatcher and a Lawn Sweeper?

Sometimes dethatchers are called power rakes, but they’re not the same thing. Power rakes are heavy machinery used by professional landscapers, and can damage the grass if they’re not used correctly. A lawn dethatcher is a light-duty tool that’s easier to use. It acts like a rake with tines (sometimes called scarifiers) that get under the grass to pull out excess thatch.

There are three styles of dethatchers. Manual dethatchers look like big rakes that you pull across the grass. Tow-behind dethatchers can be pulled behind a riding lawn mower or yard tractor to clean up as you go along. Power dethatchers use a motor to drive the tines through your grass.

Lawn sweepers have rotating brushes with a catcher in the back for gathering debris. You push them across the lawn so the brushes can grab debris and toss it into the catcher. Like dethatchers, you can get lawn sweepers that are manual or motorized, or they can be pulled behind a riding mower or yard tractor. Lawn sweepers are similar to bagging lawn mowers, but some of them can handle heavier debris like small sticks, acorns, leaves and pine needles.

Pros and Cons of Dethatchers

Tow-behind or power dethatchers can be pricey, usually coming in around $130 to $150, and you need room to store them. If you’re willing to put in the work, a manual dethatcher like the True Temper dethatching rake is less than $100, and a fantastic investment for a healthier lawn.

Pros

  • Wallet-friendly
  • The 54-inch handle is made of sturdy hardwood with a cushioned end grip for comfort and control, and it’s long enough to be easy on your back
  • The 15-inch rake head with curved steel tines is double-sided and designed for dethatching on one side and tilling on the other

Cons

  • If you have a large yard and a lot of thatch, you may be better off renting a motorized dethatcher
  • Dethatching manually can take several days

Pros and Cons of Lawn Sweepers

Tow-behind sweepers are usually in the $200 to $300 range, but they can be worth it if you have a large yard with big trees that shed a lot of acorns. An affordable option for smaller lawns is the Earthwise Push Lawn Sweeper.

Pros

  • Sturdy and lightweight, so it’s easy to maneuver
  • The 21-inch brush, with two brushes per section, is wide enough to cut down on the number of passes you’ll need to make
  • Rake height is adjustable
  • Significantly more affordable than a motorized or tow-behind sweeper
  • Folds flat for easy storage

Cons

  • It’s best for leaves and small debris; but can’t handle acorns, rocks or wet debris

How Long Do Dethatchers Last?

You shouldn’t dethatch your lawn every year. A little buildup of tchatch is good for your lawn, holding in nutrients of water. Since you only use a dethatcher once every three years or so, a good dethatcher should last for decades.

How Long Do Lawn Sweepers Last?

As long as you use it when the grass is dry and keep your lawn cut short enough not to produce large amounts of grass clippings, a lawn sweeper should give you years of use. To prevent wear and tear, you can also mulch grass clippings by mowing over them, so there’s less bulk for the lawn sweeper to handle.

The Bottom Line

If you have a large yard and lots of trees that drop nuts and debris, a lawn sweeper towed behind your riding lawn mower can save a lot of work. A push lawn sweeper is more affordable, and will probably be fine for smaller yards, particularly in areas where you don’t have to fight the squirrels to gather up acorns.

Dethatching depends on how much muscle you’re willing to put into it. You only need to dethatch a lawn once every two or three years, so it depends on whether you have space to store a tow-behind or motorized dethatcher. Before you buy, you can rent a dethatcher from many garden centers and home improvement stores, giving you a chance to find out if it’s something you’ll use, or which style is right for you.

Bright bushes of the Goldflame spirea variety in the spring garden. Gardening, landscape design.

Spirea ‘Goldmound’

There are many varieties of spirea, a full sun standout. Goldmound Spirea, Spirea japonica ‘Goldmound,’ often grown for its foliage, is hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones 3 through 8.

As its name suggests, new foliage in spring appears yellowish green. Leaves turn a brighter green in summer before changing again in fall to shades of red and orange.

Goldmound is a smaller shrub, one to two feet tall and two to three feet wide. Small pink clusters of flowers appear in early summer. The flowers form on new growth so you can prune this shrub back in late winter before it breaks dormancy. Some gardeners also cut off spent blooms so they won’t produce seeds and become invasive.

It’s been said that a weed is just a plant growing where you don’t want it to. Some are aggressive to the point of being invasive, while others have redeeming qualities you might want to consider before eradication efforts begin. (We’re talking about you, white clover.)

What Kind of Weed Killers to Use

The best way to get rid of weeds once they’re growing it simply to pull them up. You can use your hands or, better yet, specialized tools for pulling weeds that help you get the plant at the roots and save some wear and tear on your back and knees.

You’ll notice that many of the weeds on this list can be taken care of with a broadleaf herbicide. If you choose to go that route, we recommend organic weed killers that are safe your family and pets, as well as the water and land around your home.

How to Get Rid of Mushrooms Growing in Your Lawn

Dorothy Clark of Culver, Oregon writes: “Toadstools are growing in the open soil and under plant leaves in my flower bed. The soil isn’t too damp, so I don’t know why these intruders are showing up. I pull out and dispose of the mushrooms in my lawn, but they reappear. How do I get rid of them?”

mushrooms in lawn trees

Melinda Myers: Toadstools, or mushrooms, are the fruiting body of fungi. The underground portion of the fungus feeds on decaying wood, like old tree roots, a stump (above) or lumber accidentally buried during construction. Once the fungi have decomposed the wood, their food source is gone and the mushrooms in your lawn will disappear.

Rake to break up or remove the toadstools if you’re worried about kids or pets eating them. Otherwise, wait for drier weather and watch them disappear until the next rainy spell.

Pro tip: Mushrooms and toadstools could potentially be poisonous and dangerous. Never eat anything in the wild or your backyard without checking with a professional.

Why Do Mushrooms Grow In Random Places?

mushrooms in lawn

“Why do mushrooms pop up in random places, and are they harmful to other plants?” writes Harmony Gayle of Portsmouth, Virginia.

Myers: Mushroom fungi feed on and decompose old tree roots, stumps, leaves and other organic matter. Some species of Armillaria mushrooms are the fruiting body of a root rot fungal disease that attacks susceptible trees and shrubs. Clusters of honey-colored mushrooms may appear at the base of an infected plant.

Mushroom Growing in Potted Plant

“What’s sticking out of the bottom of my hanging plant [above]?” writes Nancy Tibbitts of Parrott, Virginia.

Myers: This could be a mushroom. Your potting mix may contain bark, a potential food source for the fungi. It won’t hurt your plant, but you could see new mushrooms sporadically appear when the weather conditions are right.

]]> Amazon’s Affordable, Portable Greenhouse Protects Plants All Winter https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/portable-greenhouse-on-amazon/ Fri, 13 Jan 2023 20:30:00 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=503870 It turns out that moving your plants to the porch (even if it’s covered) during the winter doesn’t exactly keep them alive and thriving. If you’re like me and struggling to upkeep plants that were green and budding during warmer months, then the Koksry Portable Walk-In Greenhouse is here to save the day (and your plants). The three-tier, walk-in portable greenhouse has eight shelves to save all your plants and herbs from getting covered in frost. Plus, the structure can prevent pests from snacking during your harvest season, which you’ll be able to extend thanks to the greenhouse.

There are many benefits to portable greenhouses, beyond extending growing seasons. They allow for certain crops to be grown year-round, even in marginal and city environments, and can be placed inside or outside. In addition to storing plants, you can store gardening tools, seeds and more inside the structure. It’s also lightweight, so you can move it around your outdoor area hassle-free.

Perhaps more than anything, portable greenhouses are used for germinating seeds. With the Koksry greenhouse, you can jumpstart your spring garden if you’re planning on starting seedlings to move outside. By summer, a greenhouse will give extra support to heat-loving vegetables, like tomatoeseggplants and peppers. Even tropical plants that wouldn’t necessarily survive outside of their natural environment can be grown in a greenhouse.

What is a portable greenhouse?

In short, portable greenhouses—like any greenhouse—create relatively warm environments and protect your plant life year-round. Typically, the walls are made of transparent materials, which allow light in and help facilitate a regulated climate that’s ideal for cultivating a variety of plants.

There are several different types of greenhouses that can be found in an assortment of sizes, ranging from mini to industrial ones used to grow large crops. The Koksry greenhouse is larger than a mini one, but more compact and affordable than larger, non-portable greenhouses. The beauty of a portable greenhouse is that it’s easy to transport, so you can move your garden wherever it needs to be. It also comes in handy if you’re doing yard work, completing a landscaping project or moving.

This particular one has a transparent plastic cover that’s waterproof and protects plants from harsh ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can cause plants to burn. Mesh screen windows on both sides regulate internal and external airflow while keeping out pests. It also has a steel pipe and ground nails to stabilize the structure and prevent it from being knocked over by strong winds. Basically, you’re not sacrificing stability for portability with this greenhouse.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Easy to set up
  • Affordable
  • UV plastic cover
  • Waterproof
  • Mesh screen windows on each side
  • Roll-up door
  • High-strength connector link
  • Ground nails and rope for stabilization

Cons

  • Heat and humidity levels can increase rapidly in smaller structures
  • Shelves aren’t especially sturdy

How to Use a Portable Greenhouse

Because portable greenhouses are often used for germinating seeds, you’ll probably get the most use out of your Koksry greenhouse if you plant seeds inside the greenhouse. Then, during warm, sunny months, you can replant the seedlings into bigger pots and move them out of the greenhouse, if you like.

In addition to seed starting, portable greenhouses are also for cloning plants that are already in your landscape, as the plastic cover traps humidity, which helps a cutting take more successfully. If you create the right microclimate inside, you can grow nearly anything.

Portable greenhouses do tend to require a bit more attention than larger ones. You might consider monitoring the heat and humidity levels, as they can build faster in a smaller space and lead to fungus growth and root rot.

As is the case with many internal combustion machines, draining gas is an essential step in winterizing your lawn mower.

You need to drain the gas because it deteriorates. Leave some in your mower's fuel tank and carburetor over the winter, and there's an excellent chance your mower won't start in spring. Over time, oxidization causes gas to change in composition, decreasing its combustibility.

It's worth noting some premium ethanol-free fuels aren't nearly as susceptible to this problem. But most folks don't put premium gas in their lawn mower.

In practice, the easiest way to purge your mower of gas at the end of the season is by running it dry. Don't fill up completely before your last mow of the season, then run your mower until the fuel runs out. This clears the gas tank, fuel lines and carburetor in one easy step. If you forget to do this and finish the mowing season with a full or partial tank, you'll need to drain it manually.

We'll explain how to drain gas from a lawn mower, with and without a siphon pump.

]]>
Siphon Method

Disconnect the spark plug wire

  • Start by locating the spark plug.
  • Pull off the wire connected to the spark plug.
    • Most lawn mower spark plug wires attach with an insulated spring clip. Usually you can disconnect it with your fingers. This ensures there’s no chance of accidental sparking and ignition while you’re draining the gas.

“Two of us are here from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on game days,” says Campbell. Four work during the day to take care of all the sod that needs attention, and six more come in for games to handle the tarp during the rain delays. Also, they mow.

What if fans wanted to recreate the look of a professionally-striped baseball field in their front or back yard? Could they do it?

“Absolutely,” says Campbell. Striping a lawn is no different than striping a baseball field, he says. You just need a mower and a way to flatten the grass blades.

Equipment Needed To Create Lawn Stripes

You can stripe a lawn with your regular mower. But for a big-league look, get or make a striping kit.

Here’s all you need:

  • Lawn mower — push, riding, reel or rotary;
  • Lawn striping kit or lawn roller — rent, buy or DIY;
  • Sand or water to fill the roller.

Striping kits or lawn rollers attach to your mower behind the cutting blades, flattening the grass after it’s cut. Each pass of the mower and roller bends the grass in the opposite direction from the grass in the pass next to it.

“Striping is visible because sunlight hits the grass blades at different angles,” says Campbell. With each pass of the mower, you’re bending the grass blades toward or away from the light source.

Looking to stripe on the cheap? DIY a striping kit with stuff you have in your garage. Try a 2×4, weighted piece of pipe, even an old rubber mat — anything that can flatten grass and be safely attached behind your mower is a potential striping kit. Just be careful on the turns so you don’t run over any DIY attachments.

How To Stripe a Lawn

Start with grass that’s pretty long (three to four inches). Don’t cut off more than a one-third of the length.

“Longer, cool-season grasses like fescue work better than short, warm-season grass like Bermuda,” says Campbell. Bermuda just doesn’t bend as well. “That’s why you don’t see dramatic striping in Southern ball fields,” he says.

Also, cut grass when it’s dry. It’s better for grass health, says Campbell. Cutting wet grass promotes fungal disease, and it’s harder to get an even cut when water weighs down the grass blades.

Follow these steps to make stripes like the pros:

  1. Decide where you want to start. Making your first pass next to a driveway or sidewalk gives you a nice straight line to follow for subsequent passes. Or make a run around the perimeter of your yard and go parallel to either side. Starting in a corner and making diagonal lines is an option, too.
  2. Make your first parallel pass, looking out in front of you to follow the previous stripe. At the end of the row, turn toward your next pass, lift up the front wheels and turn. Bring down the mower right next to the previous pass. If you can run up on a sidewalk to turn, even better.
  3. Mow around obstacles like trees and flowerbeds by turning into the un-mowed lawn, never back into your already-cut and striped side. Meet up with the previous pass on the other side of the obstacle and continue.
  4. Continue making parallel passes until you’ve finished the lawn.
  5. Go around the perimeter to cover any turn marks, if desired.
  6. Change up the direction every week or two so your whole lawn gets some sunshine and fresh air.

Beyond Stripes

Once you’ve mastered parallel lines, mix it up a bit. Create a checkerboard by striping your lawn again at a 90-degree angle to the first stripes. Or create a diagonal effect with a 45-degree offset. Circles could be in your future as well — start in the middle and work outward for those.

If you really want the best stripes on your block, use a reel mower, says Campbell. That’s what the pros use to get those well-defined ballpark stripes.

“Reel mowers, like the ones from the 1940s with the rotating blades, make the best stripes,” says Campbell, who uses a power reel mower at CHS Field. Well-maintained reels are extremely sharp and cut the grass like scissors. Rotary mowers, by contrast, forcefully rip the grass, dulling the effect of the sunlight on the blades.

As for his lawn? Does a professional groundskeeper stripe his lawn at home?

“Nope,” Campbell says. “This stadium is my home.”

Spend More Time Outdoors with This Chemical-Free Mosquito Repellent https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/mosquito-repellent-skeeter-hawk-fly-trap/ Thu, 18 Aug 2022 21:09:06 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=476488 Labeled the world’s deadliest animal by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mosquitoes were out in record numbers across the U.S. this year due to increased rain and warmer weather.

In northern Minnesota, where I spend many of my weekends, I can’t remember a year when the mosquitoes were this terrible. All summer long we’ve experimented with new and different insect repellents, fogging methods and anything else to limit my family’s itchy bites. Nothing worked.

So I started scouring the internet for mosquito extermination options and found the Skeeter Hawk Fly Trap. I ordered one up and tested it to see if it could be the thing to save our summer.

What Is the Skeeter Hawk Fly Trap?

The Skeeter Hawk Large Fly Trap lures, captures and kills mosquitoes, gnats, house flies, horseflies and many other flying insects. The dual-band, bright blue LED UV light attracts them, and the ultra-quiet fan draws them to the canister where they die from dehydration.

Roughly 16 inches tall, it plugs into a conventional 110-volt outlet. A fold-down hanging hook makes it easy to keep out of the way, indoors or outdoors. And a single power button and twist-lock insect dehydration canister make it extremely user-friendly. Skeeter Hawk Large Fly Traps protect large rooms, yards, pools, patios and decks without chemicals or continuous buzzing.

How We Tested It

With the summer winding down, I packed up the family for a quiet August weekend at a small northern Minnesota cabin. Since my in-laws are also staying there, I brought the Skeeter Hawk Fly Trap to help keep the mosquitoes away during outdoor meals and patio sessions with us and our new baby, their newest grandchild.

I was eager to determine how well the the fly trap worked, whether the sound or brightness were nuisances, and how easily I could dispose of the dead insects.

Operation

First off, the Skeeter Hawk Fly Trap is really bright. I plugged the fly trap into an outlet roughly 20 feet from where we gathered. Then I noticed the power cord was only five feet long. If I placed it on one of our hanging plant hooks, I needed an extension cord to reach the outlet. So I put it on a table instead.

With the sun high in the sky, the bright blue light from the trap was only slightly noticeable. But as the sun slowly dipped below the horizon, the light became more apparent and eye-piercing. I had to move the Fly Trap to an outlet further away.

We still got chewed up a few times by the mosquitos, possibly due to the distance between the Skeeter Hawk Fly Trap and our group — almost 40 feet. Or not; the manufacturer recommends using insect repellent along with with the Fly Trap.

During the gathering, I strolled by the trap a few times and found it covered with various flying insects. The fan runs whisper quiet. Without the bright blue light, you’d never know the Skeeter Hawk Fly Trap was working.

We carried on well past sundown. After nearly six hours I turned off the trap, unplugged it and headed in with the family for the night.

Effectiveness

cleaning bugs from the bottom of the skeeter hawk fly trap

The next morning when I checked the dehydration canister, I could barely believe my eyes. I found a solid, almost 1/2-inch thick patty of bugs, mostly mosquitoes. Surprised, I made the mistake of opening the canister, allowing many insects escape to freedom.

I knew I shouldn’t have done that. It states clearly in the instructions to wait two days to open the canister after use. But I was wowed by its effectiveness.

Cleanup was a breeze. I scraped out the pile of partially dead bugs with a stick and wiped it down with a wet towel. Clearly, this trap catches bugs.

Pros

  • Productive at capturing insects;
  • Whisper quiet;
  • Good for many flying pests species;
  • Easy to use:
  • No chemicals or swapping out cartridges.

Cons

  • Short power cord;
  • Bright;
  • You may still get bitten.

FAQs

Q: Can the Skeeter Hawk Fly Trap run on batteries if there’s no outlet available?

A: No, it requires a wall outlet.

Q: Do the Fly Traps come in any other sizes or colors?

A: There are two sizes of Skeeter Hawk Fly Traps: small and large. They’re only available with a gray body and blue LED lights.

What Other Reviewers Had To Say

Gina, on AceHardware.com, liked the product. “I have to empty it once or twice a week. It gets the bugs,” she writes.

But Mombudget, a Walmart.com reviewer, wasn’t enamored with it. She writes: “We bought the Area Mosquito Trap that’s suppose to catch mosquitoes and flies. It’s suppose to cover up to one acre. We are getting eaten alive by mosquitoes and still have tons of flies. The area affected is less than an acre.”

Final Verdict

I used the fly trap on consecutive nights with the same results. We still got bitten a few times, but nothing like we might have without it. Plus, there’s peace of mind knowing the canister was packed with bugs after each evening stint.

Though the bright blue LED lights aren’t ideal for creating atmosphere, they’re perfect at attracting unwanted insects and keeping them away for good.

How To Save Your Lawn During Water Restrictions and Drought https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-save-your-lawn-during-water-restrictions-and-drought/ Wed, 10 Aug 2022 16:01:48 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=475688 Almost overnight, it seemed the moist green ground of spring turned into the brown-hardened throes of late summer. That’s especially true for those of us in the Western U.S., where drought has firmly sunk in its claws. Keeping a lawn green out here is not only difficult, it might not even be an option in coming years.

Increasingly, some homeowners are replacing bluegrass and fescue with native grasses and plants, which can survive with little to no supplemental water. But for those who aren’t ready to part with their lawns just yet, it’s still possible to mostly keep that welcoming patch of grass around through the hottest months. Find out the best time to water the grass.

“You don’t always have ideal conditions for keeping your lawn looking its best during a drought, but there are a few things you can do to help it keep thriving,” says Bill Freimuth, president of Centurion brands garden and outdoor products.

“Maintaining your yard prior to drought with the correct level of fertilizer, coupled with good water management practices, will help reduce damage.”

If you’re in a drought area or under water restrictions, here are some tips to try to preserve your lawn so you can bring it back to normal once the heat drops and the rains return.

Mow Less Often

Grass will eventually stop growing during a drought. You can still mow it, but pay attention to its growth rate. As that slows, ease up your schedule to once every week or three.

Don’t Mow Wet Grass

This includes in the morning when the grass is likely to be wet from irrigation or dew. Mowers usually rip the top of grass blades, which can make them susceptible to diseases and fungus.

“A good rule of thumb is if you see that your mower wheels are getting wet, stop mowing immediately and wait for your lawn to dry out before attempting to mow again,” says Craig Elworthy, founder of DIY lawn care subscription company Lawnbright.

Keep Your Blades Sharp

Sharpen your mower blades at least twice during the mowing season. As mentioned above, dull blades tend to rip the grass. “This can leave jagged edges that quickly dry out and turn brown,” says Freimuth.

Raise the Blade

Raise your lawnmower deck height to the top setting, usually around three to four inches, and never remove more than one-third of grass blades. Longer grass helps shade the soil, keeping evaporation and soil temperatures down.

“Additionally, the grass plant itself will be able to store more water in the grass tissue, which helps hold its color, and keep it stronger and healthier,” says Elworthy.

Leave the Dead Stuff

When your grass turns brown and goes dormant in the heat of summer, resist the temptation to rake up the dead blades.

“Your grass is already stressed out,” says Elworthy. “Running a power rake or a dethatcher through it will just rip up the healthy grass and expose the soil to the harsh sunlight, causing it to heat up and creating additional die off.”

Water Efficiently

Your lawn needs about 1-1/2-in. inches of water per week to prevent grasses from going into dormancy, which they do for survival. “Deep and infrequent watering is the best way to water during a drought,” says Freimuth. That translates to about a half inch of water, three days a week.

Also, make sure sprinklers are spraying directly onto the grass between sunrise and 8 a.m. Use a smartphone timer to keep track of waterings.

Practice Spot Seeding

If your lawn has small thin or damaged areas, spot seeding by hand can help. “First, loosen soil before seeding to provide good soil-seed contact, and then sprinkle the seeds into the problem area,” says Freimuth. Water those areas for the first couple of weeks to encourage growth.

Skip Fertilizing

It’s tempting to fertilize the lawn in hopes of keeping it green, but wait until the temperatures begin to drop. Over fertilization, especially with quick-release nitrogen, can do more harm than good because it is a shock to the system, telling grass to grow quickly.

“In the summer, your grass is running a marathon,” says Elworthy. “It only needs a few sips of Gatorade now and then to make it through.” By “Gatorade,” Elworthy means means liquid bio-stimulants that drive root growth to help it stay alive in the summer heat. His company sells a lawn Survival Pack. Or you can try a mix of sea kelp and humic acid.

Stay on Top of Weeds

Weeds compete with your garden and grass for resources, including water. “It’s important to pull up weeds when you see them to ensure that the limited amount of water you have is going to your lawn and plants,” says Freimuth. Also, use mulch to help stifle weed growth and keep soil moist.

Know When to Fold ‘Em

If your lawn goes dormant during the summer, just let it go. “Do not mow it, and do not try to bring it out of dormancy by using any product,” says Elworthy. “You’re likely wasting time and money. Just stay off it and wait it out.”

The exception: If you can give it half an inch of water a week, that will help keep it from fully dying. Then it will come back faster when conditions are cooler and wetter.

Don’t Forget to Help the Trees

Summer droughts and heat waves are also hard on trees. Here are the top three actions to take, according to Kathy Glassey, director of renewable services at Monster Tree Service:

  • Supplemental watering: “There is a delicate balance to giving your trees just enough water,” she says. “You don’t want to over or underwater, especially when they’re stressed.”
  • Nutrient levels: Healthy soil structure and soil biodiversity are key to creating adequate nutrients for trees and giving them resilience to help withstand drought and other issues.
  • Pruning and trimming: Pruning relieves weight and stress, strengthens branches and allows more light and air circulation through the tree. “With fewer dead-weight branches to worry about, your tree will be able to supply water and nutrients to the areas that need it most,” says Glassey.

What Are Palm Fronds? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/what-are-palm-fronds/ Tue, 02 Aug 2022 17:48:49 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=474691 My niece recently moved from the Midwest to the South. When she and her husband bought a house, they became first-time palm tree owners. Their tree, the focal point of their backyard, survived several hurricanes.

Now she wants to make sure she knows how to take care of their palm tree so they can enjoy it for many more years. One of her big questions involved the palm fronds. Trees just don’t make leaves that big in the Midwest!

What Is a Palm Frond?

A palm frond is basically the leaf of the palm tree. Unlike the leaves of deciduous trees, which emerge in the spring and drop off in the fall, palm fronds stay green year-round and last for several years.

Like deciduous tree leaves, palm fronds perform photosynthesis, giving the tree the food it needs to live. Some palm fronds can last for five years or longer. They come in many sizes and shapes too. Some may be shaped like a large feather, others like large fans.

Do Palm Fronds Require Any Care?

Palm fronds generally don’t require special care. They will naturally age and turn brown over time.

“Unlike trees which are classified as dicots, palms are monocots, just like grasses, and need every frond for best nutritional uptake,” says Teresa Watkins, host of the Better Lawns and Gardens Radio Show based in Orlando, Florida. “Only cut palm fronds off when they are diseased or completely brown.”

If you suspect your palm tree’s fronds are diseased, consult an arborist specializing in palm trees. They’ll determine what’s up how best to treat your tree.

According to the University of Florida/IFAS Extension Service, never remove palm fronds before hurricane season. Palm trees can withstand strong storms with all their fronds intact, and may sustain more damage if trimmed before a storm.

What To Do If Palm Fronds Turn Brown?

Palm fronds don’t last forever, and eventually older fronds turn brown. Some species of palm trees are considered self-cleaning. The older brown fronds will naturally fall off the tree.

Other species of palm trees may require removing the brown fronds by hand. When you cut them off, always use a clean, sharp knife or pruning shears. If your palm tree is too tall for you to reach the fronds safely, consider hiring a professional tree service.

Before cutting, look at your palm tree and imagine it to be the face of a clock. “No matter what species of palm, fronds should be left in the hands at nine o’clock and three o’clock position,” Watkins says. “Never prune in hands at 10 to two o’clock.” Also, spring is the best season for trimming brown fronds.

How To Dispose of Fallen Palm Fronds?

Fallen palm fronds can be several feet long. They don’t decompose easily and must be disposed of properly.

According to the University of Florida/IFAS Extension Service, palm fronds fall in the “maybe” category for composting. They recommend drying palm fronds and running them through a chipper before attempting to compost them. They will still take a long time to break down.

Because most homeowners don’t own chippers, Watkins recommends placing brown fronds “in lawn/debris bags or tied in bundles to be hauled away by your local utility.” Contact your local garbage service for times of the year when they pick up lawn debris. There may be a charge.

Cut Through Yard Work with This Stihl Cordless Pruning Saw https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/cordless-pruning-saw-stihl-review/ Thu, 28 Jul 2022 17:45:10 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=474150 The summer after I moved into my home 13 years ago, I invested in a bunch of tree trimming tools and maintenance equipment. The double city lot I purchased included 14 mature trees that were in terrible shape. Several trees needed to be pruned or trimmed, and six had to come down due to disease, rot or overcrowding.

I bought a bow saw, pole saw, pruners, loppers and a gas chain saw. I did much of the work myself and hired a professional tree service to take out the big ones closest to the house.

These days, I don’t use those tools much except when a windstorm knocks down a limb or two. Instead of digging out the entire tree tool collection, I grabbed the Stihl GTA 26 Pruner to see if it would work for these small and medium branches and limbs.

What Is the Stihl GTA 26 Pruner?

The Stihl GTA 26 is a compact, handheld battery-operated pruner weighing 2.7 lbs. It’s got a condensed four-inch chain saw with a quarter-inch PM3 chain to make smooth cuts with next to no vibration.

It also features an LED display, safe trigger lockout switch and a comfortable ergonomic rubber grip. The Stihl GTA 26 ships with a powerful AS 2 battery, charger, lubricating oil and a carrying case.

Like other Stihl products, the GTA 26 pruner looks and feels sturdy and well-made. It even features a tiny version of their trademark bright orange guide bar scabbard to keep it safe and sound during storage or transport.

How We Tested It

I had a single limb come down from a maple tree during a recent storm. I broke it down with the Stihl pruner and took to the county compost heap for disposal.

While I was there, I asked the attendant if I could use his 20-foot tall pile of limbs and branches to further test the Shihl GTA 26. With his approval, I got after the pile, keeping a close eye on battery life, cuts made, and overall performance on different thicknesses and types of branches.

Performance Review

Performance

With the battery charged, I began cutting the downed maple limb in my yard. The limb was nearly 17 feet long and close to five inches in diameter at its fattest.

The GTA 26 pruner had no problem with this task. It cut up the branch in no time, though it required multiple passes and one rotation on the thick final cut. Though better on branches less than 2-1/2-in. thick, it handled thicknesses up to 3-1/2-in. in a single, methodical pass.

The Stihl GTA 26 was comfortable to carry and use, producing more cutting power than I expected from a compact battery operated pruner.

The same was true at the compost heap. Again, starting with a full battery, I performed 83 cuts over 29 minutes before the battery ran out. It again worked best on branches less than 2-1/2-in. thick. Unsurprisingly, it cut through softer woods like Pine and Aspen with no problem.

Value

If you compare similar pruning products, you’ll quickly find are all roughly the same price when you include the battery and charger. However, the GTA 26 was the first of its kind in the U.S. market. Plus, Stihl is an industry leader in high-quality lawn and garden tools.

Although it may seem like you’re spending a lot on another garden tool in your collection, know that it’s a well-built and dependable one.

Reliability and durability

The reputation of Stihl tools has long been based on durability and dependability, and those traits held here. The GTA 26 looks and feels sturdy and strong. It features high quality, well-made components like the PM3 saw chain and stout AS 2 battery. If properly used and maintained, these will function for many years down the road.

Ease of Use

The trigger operated Stihl GTA 26 is as user friendly as they come. The LED display gives you up-to-the-second charge readings and tool status information.

There are also multiple safety components like a retractable chain guard and trigger lockout switch for ensuring safe operation. Even maintenance and lubrication on the GTA 26 is painless, thanks to the tool-less, single-wingnut bar and chain access.

Why You Should Buy This

The Stihl GTA 26 is ideal for light cutting around the yard. The foolproof, trigger operated pruner is lightweight, strong, agile and well-made.

The tool comes with everything you need to get it running. And it’s made by Stihl, one of the best known and respected brands in the field. Once you get your hands on one of these, you’ll never pick up your pruning shears, lopper or bow saw again.

Things Other Than Books You Can Put In A Little Free Library https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/little-free-things/ Thu, 21 Jul 2022 18:14:23 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=473284 You’ve probably heard of a Little Free Library, or at least seen one in your neighborhood and wondered what it was. It’s a simple concept: A box on a post in a front yard with free books for your neighbors to borrow and return, like a regular library. Little Free Libraries work best when there are several in the same neighborhood, so you’ll typically see a few near each other.

While books are by far the most common item, you can put just about any item inside a Little Free Library. We highlighted the most creative and popular options we found on social media. If you want to share the joys of reading with others, here’s how you can DIY a Little Free Library of your own!

Little Free Pantry

One of the most wholesome options is a pantry, like this one with canned food. The Little Free Pantry nonprofit, launched in May 2016 in Arkansas, now has locations in all 50 states and parts of Canada.

You can find the nearest pantry and register your own pantry here, The website also has answers frequently asked questions, like what food should you put in a Little Free Pantry.

Little Free Plant Stand

Another popular option is a Little Free Plant Stand. Neighbors can share plants they divided, those they no longer want, or something they think their neighbors want more of in their neighborhood.

Little Free Blockbuster

Blockbusters are popping up around your neighborhood. And no, you haven’t been transported back to the ’90s.

Little Free Blockbusters are like regular neighborhood libraries, only with movies instead of books. The Little Free Blockbuster Instagram page shares project ideas. You can find the nearest location to you on their website.

Little Free Kindness Rocks

You can spread kindness in a multitude of ways, including with rocks. This fun project would be great for kids to paint their own rock, then share it with a neighbor.

Stick Library

Little Free Libraries aren’t just for humans. You can also build one for your four-legged friends.

Rather than throwing away fallen sticks in your yard, put them in a stick library for local dogs to play with on their walks. You can also put out toys or treats for dogs, but make sure they’ll hold up in all weather conditions.

Stay Shady with This Family Handyman Approved Sun Shirt https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/sun-shirt-review/ Thu, 21 Jul 2022 13:18:11 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=472913 Sun protection isn’t just for roofers and landscapers. It’s a must for everyone out there who likes to spend time in the yard, on the boat, riding a motorcycle or firing up a smoker.

Personally, I’m diligent about applying sunscreen. At least, I thought I was. But after succumbing to the dermatologist’s scalpel, I’ve learned I don’t reapply nearly as much as I should, and rarely have sunscreen available when I need more.

Because of this, I started a small collection of UV protective clothing. After noticing Dickies made a line of warm weather work wear, I ordered one of their sun shirts and gave it a try.

What Is The Dickies Temp-iQ Cooling Performance Long Sleeve Sun Shirt?

This Dickies Temp-iQ Cooling Performance Long Sleeve Sun Shirt, made of 60% polyester and 40% cotton, is built to withstand the abuse summer outdoor activities can bring. It features a built-up, raglan neckline, teamed with UPF 40+ sun protection to keep harmful rays at bay no matter the conditions.

The advanced Temp-iQ intelligent cooling fabric effectively controls your core body temperature while wicking away moisture, keeping you cool and dry. It features a comfortable hood and anchor thumb-holes to provide extra coverage for your head and hands. There’s also a appreciated chest pocket so you don’t misplace your carpenter’s pencil or ear plugs around the jobsite.

The Dickies Temp-iQ Long Sleeve Performance Sun Shirt comes in five colors and sizes from small to 4-XL.

How We Tested It

I ordered the Dickies sun shirt right before a ten-day heat wave in the middle of July. I had no specific outdoor projects in mind to test the shirt, but plenty of menial daily tasks to put it through the ringer.

Over the ten-day period, I wore the Dickies Temp-iQ Sun Shirt every time I worked outdoors — mowing the lawn, painting part of the garage, breaking down fallen limbs from a storm, splitting firewood, even removing a wasp nest. While testing the shirt, I was most interested in how well the Temp-iQ fabric protected me from the sun. I was equally interested in the shirt’s general fit, comfort, utility and cleaning instructions.

Performance Review

Initially the long-sleeved, hooded sun shirt felt warm. However, once I focused on the task at hand, my clothing became irrelevant. I quickly learned the Dickies Sun Shirt is comfortable and breathable, and the moisture wicking top notch. On two occasions I got stuck in a spontaneous rain shower only to be dry and cool minutes later.

I am also impressed by the strength of the Dickies Temp-iQ Sun Shirt. The durable fabric feels thicker and less flexible than other UV protectant shirts I’ve owned for fishing and other outdoor uses, but it’s just as comfortable. While breaking down the branch pile, I worried about the shirt tearing or snagging on pointed limb ends, pruning shears or bow saw teeth. It came through it unscathed.

The Dickies Temp-iQ Sun Shirt washing instructions are standard: machine wash on cold with like colors and tumble dry low. But something else caught my attention when reading the instructions — the UPF 40+ sun protection is only effective for 10 washes!

After doing some research, it seems the UV protection wears down slowly over time. Though your Dickies Temp-iQ Sun Shirt won’t have the full UPF 40+ protection after ten washes, it’s still better for mowing the lawn than that concert tee you picked up a few summers back.

The extra-large shirt fits well. It offers comfortable sleeves, thumb-holes, neckline and hood to accommodate a big man. I just wish the shirt was a few inches longer. Multiple times during my yard work, I picked up a stick or sprinted away after spraying a wasp nest and felt a burst of hot air straight up my back. By adding a few inches to the bottom, Dickies would have a slam-dunk product more enjoyable for the wearer.

The Best Multitool for Big Jobs? Check Out the Zippo AxeSaw https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/best-multitool-zippo-axesaw-camping-saw/ Wed, 20 Jul 2022 16:44:56 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=472750 What do you do if after decades of catering to cigarette smokers, your business needs to make a change to survive? Well, if you’re Zippo, you get into the campfire game. That’s exactly what the company did, producing neat campfire-centric multi-tools, fire starters, emergency kits, lanterns and more.

One of the most interesting camping products I’ve seen in a long time is the Zippo AxeSaw, a lightweight, well-designed multi-tool for preparing firewood. I’m a sucker for these strangely engineered niche tools, so I ordered one up to try out.

What is the Zippo AxeSaw?

The Zippo AxeSaw is a bow saw, hatchet and mallet in one.

The 15-inch stainless steel saw blade can cut limbs up four inches thick. It also features a hardened five-inch, 420-alloy stainless steel axe head and a heavy-duty mallet capable of driving tent stakes in even the hardest of soils. The durable polymer handle includes storage for multiple saw blades and a flip-over cam for self-adjusting tension.

The AxeSaw looks and feels durable and well made. The saw and hatchet blades provide top-notch corrosion resistance. And the polymer handle and dual function saw handle/safety sheath feel comfortable and sturdy in the hand.

How We Tested It

Like other multi-tools, I tested each distinctive function of the Zippo AxeSaw. I split some logs with the hatchet, broke down a pile of branches and limbs with the bow saw, and hammered several stakes with the mallet.

Because of its unique shape, I carried it in my backpack and in a pack on my dual-sport motorcycle to test its true camping mobility.

Performance Review

Out of the sheath, the hatchet blade came sharp and ready. The stainless-steel blade effortlessly tore through the log’s age dried heartwood. The AxeSaw’s nearly 18-inch handle is a joy to swing and broke the firewood to kindling in no time.

The AxeSaw’s mallet is the butt of the hatchet head. Again, the long handle provided plenty of swing force for driving stakes. But you’d better be accurate with your blows, since the mallet’s face is less than 1-1/2-sq. in. It drive stakes well, and the user’s manual clearly states that’s all you should use it for. Don’t try it with nails.

While splitting thicker logs with the hatchet or delivering arching blows with the mallet, the bow saw blade rattles in the hollow handle. The vibration makes the AxeSaw feel clunky, noisy and poorly constructed. It was more irritating than anything else.

The bow saw was the most efficient tool of the bunch; I broke down a mass of downed limbs after a storm. It easily assembled in seconds, linking the sheath with the self-tensioning cam. From there, the sharp blade did the bulk of the work, smoothly cutting branches in the two- to three-inch diameter range. The AxeSaw proved to a comfortable tool, and the self-tensioning cam effective way at handling many binding cuts.

The unsung hero of the Zippo AxeSaw is its portability. At only 20 inches long and 2.6 lbs., this tool slid easily into my camping pack on the back of my motorcycle. It’s durable, so it won’t break if you drop your pack. As long as I stored the saw and hatchet blades safely, I felt confident packing it with fragile items like a raincoat or drinking water.

Why You Should Buy This

Deep down, a multi-tool provides function in an easy-to-carry package. That’s the Zippo AxeSaw. It’s ideal for camping at a nearby state park or deep in the back country.

It’s well-made and carries a one-year warranty on materials and craftsmanship. This tool isn’t flawless, but it’s become a welcome addition to my camping gear.

We Tried Amazon’s Best-Selling Cordless String Trimmer https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/worx-string-trimmer-lawn-edger/ Thu, 07 Jul 2022 22:25:03 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=471788 In case you’re not up with the popular memes on social media, there’s a common one about middle class dads who love lawn care constantly batting around Instagram and other outlets. It’s not one I identify with. I’m not a fan of lawn care. In fact, one great selling point for me about living in the desert after years in the Midwest is that I don’t have to mow a lawn anymore. But I do have to run a trimmer regularly to keep things tidy so as not to incur the wrath of the neighborhood association.

I don’t have much space to take care of, so when it was time to replace my unwieldy corded trimmer, I wanted a cordless yard tool that was also easy to run and maintain. I decided to give the Worx 12-inch string timmer a try. After all, it’s Amazon’s best-selling string trimmer with a 4.5-star rating after more than 21,000 reviews.

What Is the Worx String Trimmer?

Well, like it says, it’s a string trimmer. But it’s actually more than that, too. It converts to an in-line lawn edger with a turn of the head, which makes it easy to quickly take care of grass and weeds growing over your concrete sidewalk or other areas were you might want a crisp line.

The head tilts a full 90 degrees, and the telescoping body can be adjusted with a quick-release lever. That makes it ergonomic to use, and also lets you make necessary adjustments to run it on a hill or squeeze into hard-to-reach nooks and crannies. And it weighs less than six pounds.

It comes with two batteries and a charger, which is a nice bonus for a piece of equipment that’s very reasonably priced at just over $100.

How We Tested It

I used it to trim the property around my house over the course of six weeks, so about four times thanks to some surprising summer rains that came a little early.

Right out of the box, set up is easy. It took me less than five minutes to snap the few parts together. After that, I put one of the batteries onto the charger and let it get a full charge before using it.

cutting grass with the Worx 3 Cordless String Trimmer

I started with a long stretch of green space between the sidewalk and the street. It’s not a landscaped section, by any means, just a random collection of Bermuda grass and desert weeds. This was the first cut of the season too, probably a week or so past due for a trim, so everything was getting a little bushy. You don’t have to have the power of a gas trimmer to take care of that space, but some of those weeds are tough enough to chew through string and get a cheap trimmer twisted up. The Worx trimmer had no problems with them. I didn’t even have to let out more string while I was cutting them.

Next, I moved over to a part of my yard where grass grows up between the large landscaping rocks. There’s not a lot of stuff to cut there, but it can be tricky for a trimmer with the stones. Again, no problems with the Worx trimmer. It got in as close as I needed it to against the rocks and wacked the weeds, without leaving me a tiny nub of string once I finished. Along the sidewalk, the in-line edger was helpful for making a nice even cut.

I’ve used it four times, at about 20 minutes per session, since getting the trimmer, and the battery is still holding its initial charge. That’s an added convenience I appreciate about the Worx trimmer.

The caveat to this is that I don’t have a lot of yard to take care of, so I can’t speak to how well this product would do for large yards or those with a particularly stubborn weed patch that’s gotten out of control.

What Others Are Saying

“Awesome little weed eater! I bought this after struggling over and over to start and restart our gas-powered weed eater,” said Aggie, a verified Amazon purchaser. “This one is so lightweight and literally starts with the push of a button!”

Kimber, another verified purchaser, had this to say: “So how does it perform? I love it. A friend stopped by the other day and complimented me on how nice the yard looked. The trimmer is lightweight, and I have a health issue that causes chronic pain at forty-something. The weight, or lack thereof, is a huge relief compared to the gas trimmer collecting dust and spider webs in the garage. I realize the batteries will lose some steam, but right now I have enough to take care of my yard. It is so easy to feed line to that a child could do it.”!

Final Verdict

This is a solid cordless trimmer that gets the job done for most yards. It might not be as powerful as traditional gas-powered string trimmer, but it’s easier to use and doesn’t require the same kind of upkeep. Its feather weight makes and adjustability make it accessible to more users too.
