When I moved here, I was eaten alive by the invisible no-see-ums, swarmed by gnats and targeted by mosquitoes.

One thing was sure: I needed an eco-friendly mosquito repellent for the yard that wasn’t going to harm me, my pets or the pollinators. Bees and butterflies are important to me, but the bugs that really bugged me simply had to go.

To protect myself, I resorted to wearing long sleeves, jeans, hats, and rubber boots up to my knees. As the summer temperatures rose, I knew this wasn’t sustainable and I needed to find a solution to my bug problem. This is where the Wonderside Flea and Tick Spray comes in the picture.

What is Wondercide Flea & Tick Spray

Lightning Bug

Wondercide Spray kills and repels ants, fleas, ticks and mosquitos at every lifecycle stage. This yard spray also takes care of Japanese beetles, crickets and gnats without using harmful chemicals.

When you’re ready to use the eco-friendly Wondercide Spray, simply attach the nozzle to your garden hose. You’ll quickly cover 5000 square feet without having to wait for a re-entry period. It’s safe and non-toxic to wildlife, humans, pets, bees, and butterflies.

I love that a few women in Texas were on a mission to find a pet-safe alternative to the devastating side effects of pesticide exposure. They were invited to pitch their product on Shark Tank and now it’s available to us!

Wondercide Outdoor Pest Control Product Features

Wondercide Spray is a safe and natural product that won’t harm the environment, pets or people. It’s so safe that you can spray and play without any waiting time.

Wondercide also makes indoor pest control spray and personal insect repellent in four different scents; cedarwood, lemongrass, rosemary and my favorite, peppermint. Plus, the brand has tested their products for efficacy and they are on-par with conventional insect repellents.

The product is safe to use around lakes, ponds and creeks, but tuck your chickens in while you spray to protect their sensitive respiratory systems.

How We Tested It

Butterfly Friendly Edit

The first time I ordered Wondercide Yard Spray, I also ordered sample sizes of the people and pet insect repellent as well as a bar of dog shampoo

As soon as the products arrived, I was chomping at the bit to try them out. Following the directions, I sprayed my entire lawn and the side of my house, including the window wells where spiders like to spin their webs. Per the instructions, I sprayed again a few days later.

Good-bye tall boots and long pants and hello flip-flops and shorts! With a healthy coating of Wondercide Spray on my lawn, I could finally enjoy summer pest-free.

The real test, however, was at my lake cottage where the mosquitos constantly swarm. I was certain they were breeding in a massive colony under my shady deck. After spraying the Wondercide Spray, we were able to enjoy dinner on the deck without being bitten. Again, we repeated the process a few days later to take care of any stragglers, and once every month thereafter. We were impressed with the long-term results, and will continue to use the product to keep pests at bay.

The sprayer covers a wide area, so treating your yard is fast and easy. Since it is recommended to avoid spraying while pollinators are active, I usually steer clear of the gardens and flower beds. Even though Wondercide is food-grade, I avoid the vegetable garden as a precaution.

For best results, be sure to use the product as directed, starting with two applications a few days apart. Avoid treating the area before rain, as this is a water soluble biodegradable product.

Pros

 • Natural ingredients
 • Repels and kills mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, gnats, chiggers, fruit flies and Japanese beetles
 • Environmentally friendly
 • Safe for pets, humans and pollinators
 • Ready-to-use spray applicator attaches to a hose
 • Quick and easy to use
 • Fast results
 • Immediately safe to walk on
 • Smells great
 • Made in the USA

Cons

 • Several applications are needed

FAQ

Wondercide 2

How do I get rid of mosquitoes in my yard without harming pets?

To get rid of pests without harming pets, avoid chemical formulas with toxic ingredients. Using a natural product like Wondercide is the best option. If you’re unsure if a product is okay to use around pets, please consult with your veterinarian before using it.

Is there a lawn spray that is safe for bees and butterflies?

Yes, there is a lawn spray that is safe for bees and butterflies. The Wondercide Flea and Tick Spray does not harm birds, bees or butterflies. However, caution should be taken to avoid spraying while pollinators are active.

Can I spray my own yard for ticks?

Yes, you can spray your own yard for ticks. It is a cost-effective alternative to using a commercial pest control company. Most commercial pest control companies charge hundreds of dollars to treat your property. These companies are licensed to use toxic chemicals, which effectively kills mosquitoes and ticks.

However, these chemicals may pose a hazard to pollinators and pets. If you decide to spray your yard yourself, you’ll be able to pick a spray that meets your needs without breaking the bank or harming animals.

What Amazon Reviewers Had to Say

Bee Friendly

Jessica Seely reviewed Wondercide on Amazon saying, “I live in FL and bought this right before hurricane Ian to try to help with bugs because as I said…Florida. But THANKFULLY I waited till after the storm because we and everyone around has standing water in their yard. ABSOLUTE breeding ground for bugs. Felt very plague-ish, So yes I used double the amount needed but IT WORKS, maybe I didn’t need to go hog crazy but I am so happy with it, even having it on repeat order.”

“Works great on mosquitoes,” says SP, a verified Amazon customer. “We have a 1500 sq ft backyard with a swamp behind the yard. We get tons of black flies and mosquitoes after the sun goes behind the woods. We didn’t want to use any dangerous chemicals as we have a 7-yr old often playing in the yard. Wondericide worked amazingly. Sprayed only on the plants just beyond our yard and that itself was sufficient. For the first time in 4 years since we have been here, we were outside sitting on the garden bench after sunset.”

Michelle gave the Wondercide spray five stars saying, “This is the best product I have ever bought. I was skeptical about trying this but I’m so very happy that I did. I have 3 dogs and 1 cat and none of them have had a single flea or tick. It’s so much safer and cheaper than going to the vet for medicine for the fleas and ticks. I will definitely be buying this product again guaranteed”

Product Comparison Mosquito Repellent for Yard

You can find different types of pest repellents like sprays, candles, plants and ultrasonic devices that may help get rid of insects. However, a spray is the best option to treat the entire yard, especially if you have a lot of ground to cover.

Concerned about being eco-friendly? Wondercide encourages reusing the sturdy plastic spray bottle that the repellent comes in. Admittedly, I accumulated five empty bottles before I bought the concentrate and refilled the sprayers. I decided to bite the bullet and purchased the big 128-ounce concentrate, which lasted me through the summer and beyond.

To get started, consider buying the Refill Starter Kit bundle with the ready-to-use reusable applicator and the 16-ounce concentrate. This will give you three treatments and cover up to 5000 square feet.

Want to save money? Shop for concentrates and bundles, or take advantage of the Chewy and Wondercide auto-ship plans.

Final Verdict

The Wondercide Spray isn’t just a mosquito repellent for your yard—it protects the entire family (including pets).

True confession: I am a Wondercide junkie. I keep a stash of my beloved spray tucked away in my basement (if you couldn’t tell by the many empty bottles in the cover image). With the help of this spray, I haven’t seen a spider in my house in a while, and I’m not afraid to show skin in the backyard. Plus, my gardens are buzzing with bees and butterflies, and the organic vegetables and flowers are thriving. You don’t have to compromise to get proper protection for your yard.

Where to Buy the Wondercide Flea and Tick Spray

I highly recommend Wondercide Flea and Tick Spray to eradicate pesky bugs in your yard. Test my favorite Wondercide product for yourself by purchasing it at retailers like Wondercide, Chewy and Walmart.

The Adjustable, No-Pull Dog Harness Our Editor Can’t Live Without https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/blue-9-balance-harness/ Mon, 06 Mar 2023 18:20:31 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=519737 If you’ve ever trained a dog to walk on a leash or in a harness, you know how challenging it can be, especially if you’re working with the wrong type—or the wrong fit—for your pup. And if your dog is anything like my stubborn German shepherd, Henry, you know the added struggle that a pulling pup brings to the mix. But rest assured, there’s hope, and its name is the Blue-9 Balance Harness.

The Balance Harness adjusts to fit your pup securely without restriction and features an additional front leash hook to prevent pulling during on-leash training. I bought it for Henry when he was six months old and have adjusted it to fit him as he’s grown. One year later, I still use it daily. It’s the only harness I reach for when we go on long hikes and outdoor adventures.

What is a Blue-9 Balance Harness?

Dog in the woods with a No Pull Harness

The Balance Harness is manufactured by Blue-9, an Iowa-based company that develops products specifically for training dogs. Created with obsessive attention to detail by designers who have spent years training and caring for dogs, the Balance Harness prevents pulling while keeping your pup’s safety and comfort top of mind. Six points of adjustment mean the harness securely fits any dog size or breed and allows for full range of movement.

The Balance Harness—like many types of dog harnesses on the market right now—features an ergonomic, H-design. This keeps your dog’s shoulders and front legs free from restriction and allows them to move naturally, which helps prevent muscle and skeletal problems when worn for extended periods of time.

This harness also features two main leash loops—one at the front of the chest and one that sits near the middle of the back—to which you can hook any type of dog leash (Henry wears his harness paired with this SparklyPets Hands-Free Leash). Use the back leash loop on its own or in tandem with the chest loop, which sits low enough to prevent tugging on the trachea and acts as a no-pull corrector. I love the option and placement of both leash loops, as I never feel like I’m choking or straining Henry while on our walks.

Shop Now

Why I Love It

The Balance Harness features soft-touch nylon straps as opposed to typical harnesses that often contain padding or panels, which can trap heat on hot days. Thinner straps also reduce the risk of chafing and restriction. Henry can wear his for hours without experiencing any friction or overheating.

When it comes to putting the Balance Harness on your pup and adjusting it to the right fit, there are multiple, conveniently-placed buckles and strap adjusters right where you need them most. This is good news for pet owners that struggle to place a harness over their dog’s head, or for dog breeds that are typically difficult to fit. There’s even an adjuster on the back strap, making this harness the most customizable fit I’ve ever seen. Henry has worn the same medium/large size Balance Harness since he was a puppy, and it still has room to adjust further as he continues to grow.

As Henry and I often find ourselves trekking in wooded areas, I also appreciate the bright orange color of his Balance Harness. Even through his thick fur, the slender straps of the harness are visible from a distance. And on road trips, I consider it one of the essential items every dog owner needs in their car. The all-strap harness is also easy to clean. I throw mine in the washing machine and hang it to dry after super muddy play days, or simply wipe away light dirt and soil as needed with a damp cloth.

Pros

 • No-pull design with six adjustment points
 • Two leash loop options
 • Sizing fits extra-small to large dogs
 • Neck buckle for dogs that dislike over-the-head styles
 • Durable and easy to clean
 • Multiple color options (including bright orange for visibility)

Cons

 • First-time adjustments and sizing can take time

But Don’t Take My Word for It!

I’m not the only one who thinks the Balance Harness will transform the way you walk your dog. Amazon reviewers say the Balance Harness changed their lives—and their pups’ lives, making walks more comfortable and enjoyable for all.

Five-star reviewer Mark Jones says, “Our Blue Heeler often has sore underarms from harnesses that are too tight in that area. I decided to give this harness a try, and it is a huge improvement. There is a good bit of space between the strap and the underarm area. Problem solved! And it does a decent job of decreasing pulling with the leash attached to the front. Plus, the front attachment is high enough so tripping of the front legs is minimal. It is easy to put on and take off… Very nice product!”

Verified Amazon purchaser Zoe Keller says the Balance Harness is the best harness ever: “I have been using this harness since I started leash training with my dog. She’s a Maremma Sheepdog, so I have a hard time finding things that fit her well. This harness has solved all problems for us: She no longer pulls (the front clip is a LIFE CHANGER), she doesn’t get rubs from the harness and for 1.5 years I was able to use one harness to adjust to fit her. We just recently had to upgrade to a bigger size.” Zoes adds, “All in all, this harness is the best quality, best for training and best for pup comfort. Luna and I highly recommend.”

Where to Buy a Balance Harness

No Pull Harness For Dogs

If you’re training a dog to walk on a leash or in the market for an adjustable, comfortable harness, the Blue-9 Balance Harness is your answer. Depending on size, it retails for between $40 and $50 on Amazon and the Blue-9 website, which is about the middle of the line when it comes to price points for dog harnesses (most range in price from about $20 to $80). A harness is the safest way to hook your dog up to a leash, and a quality, well-fitted one will reduce pulling and stress on your pup’s neck and joints.

(We think this one makes a thoughtful gift for a dog lover, too!)

I Tried a Hands-Free Dog Leash, and I No Longer Dread Walking My Dog https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/hands-free-dog-leash/ Sat, 04 Mar 2023 02:26:27 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=522073 A hands-free dog leash is a type of dog leash that fits around your waist and can free up your hands on long treks. It can even alleviate tension on your arms and shoulders caused by using a traditional leash, especially if you suffer from arthritis or deal with mobility issues.

The SparklyPets Hands-Free Dog Leash absorbs shock and allows you to walk or run without breaking stride. It also frees up your hands so you can get to your phone, keys, water bottle or stroller with ease.

I took the SparklyPets leash to the trails for a long hike with my German shepherd, Henry, who is leash-trained but always gets a little more excited when we’re out in nature. Not only did I have two free hands for hiking, but I was also a lot more stable on the rough terrain, as Henry couldn’t pull me.

The hands-free leash—and I don’t say this lightly—changed our lives. I take it with me on every doggy adventure now (along with these items that every dog owner needs in their car).

What is the SparklyPets Hands-Free Dog Leash?

Like most hands-free leashes, the SparklyPets Hands-Free Dog Leash comes in two parts: an adjustable belt to which the leash latches, and the actual dog leash that detaches from the belt. If you prefer, unhook the leash from the belt in seconds and use it as a hands-on leash. It has a bungee cord that absorbs shock and a handle at each end.

With your medium or large dog attached at the hip (literally), you have more control with a single-hand grip. That control can be crucial when crossing busy streets, running or pushing a stroller. While hiking with the hands-free leash, I was able to reach into my belt bag and pull out items with ease, such as my phone. I was even able to send a text message while walking without fumbling a leash back and forth. It was a dream.

SparklyPets Hands-Free Leash Product Features

The single-dog SparklyPets Leash comes with three main components: The waist belt, the bungee leash and a drawstring carrying bag that fits both. Some hands-free leashes are made as one 6-foot unit, and you lose however many inches you need for your waist from the six feet of leash. But the SparklyPets belt adjusts separately from the leash, which I prefer.

The belt adjusts in size from 28 to 47 inches and has two secure metal hooks to prevent the leash from unlatching. Henry weighs close to 100 pounds, and I never worried about him unlatching while we were on the move.

The bungee leash extends up to 68 inches, so it’s long enough to give your dog enough slack to run next to or in front of you. It also has two handles to grip: one rubber handle at the top of the leash with Velcro on one side (so it can lay flat against the leash in hands-free mode or be pulled away from the leash when walking in hands-on mode), and a looped grip handle at the end of the leash that hooks to the belt (which works as a traffic handle when you need a closer hold on your pup).

The SparklyPets Leash and belt come in multiple colors and have reflective threading for safety. There’s even a two-dog extender so you can have two pups attached while strolling totally hands-free!

How We Tested It

From the trails to the sidewalks, Henry and I have been taking the SparklyPets Leash with us wherever we go. I can’t imagine ever wanting to walk long distances with a standard handheld leash again.

I tested the hands-fee leash in tandem with Henry’s Blue-9 Balance Harness, hooking the leash to the back of the harness to enjoy the great outdoors like we never had before. There was no pulling, and I set our pace. Henry walked alongside me without struggle or resistance—much more easily with the waist leash than he previously had with a standard handheld leash.

At one point, Henry and I faced some dangerously muddy cliff terrain, but thanks to the quick release button, I was able to unhook him quickly and without hassle so he could meet me safely at the base of the trail.

Pros

 • Usable with or without belt
 • Two easy-grip handles
 • Quick-release button
 • Optional two-dog attachment
 • Two stainless steel clasps on belt
 • Available in multiple colors
 • Reflective threading
 • Affordable
 • Sturdy

Cons

 • Designed for medium and large dogs only
 • Waist belt loosens slightly after repeated use

FAQ

Are hands-free leashes good for dogs that pull?

While I found that my dog pulled less with a hands-free leash, I wouldn’t consider him an aggressive puller by any means. And while I don’t personally mind a little tug every now and then, it’s generally not a good idea to walk dogs who pull a lot with a hands-free leash, as it can negatively impact your back.

Are hands-free leashes safe?

Hands-free dog leashes are safe when used correctly with dogs that are leash-trained (ideally, without pulling). If your dog pulls or lunges after things, a waist dog leash might not be the best option for you and your pup. If you have a very large dog or a dog that outweighs you, it’s possible to be yanked off your feet. Hands-free leashes with quick-release buttons and fixed handles like the SparklyPets Leash definitely help in this case.

Can you use a hands-free leash while riding a bike?

Short answer: No. Using a traditional hands-free dog leash while riding a bike can cause injury to you, your pup and others. The leash can get wrapped in the wheels, your dog can pull you off the bike or your dog can get too close to the bike causing you to lose control.

There are leashes designed specifically for biking with your dog that have special features to keep your pup a safe distance from the bike.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Judging from the 10,000 five-star ratings on Amazon, reviewers of the SparklyPets Leash are loving it just as much as I am.

Five-star reviewer Teresa Henderson says the leash is great for those with mobility issues: “I have arthritis in my hands and use a cane on bad days—so I had to figure out a way to walk both [my] puppies and hold a cane or walker if I need it. This leash is perfect. [It’s] sturdy, fits my waist snugly and prevents pulling—the dogs have to come along with me because I outweigh them…The number of handles is great. [It] has literally enabled me to walk both dogs on my own! A game changer.”

Evalena Velez, mom of three, says that walking with a water bottle, phone and leash is chaotic. “This leash is so helpful, my little fur baby can walk and not have to stop when I have to readjust everything in my hands,” she says.

Verified purchaser Sara Greer writes, “Bought this as well as the dual hands-free leash for my sister and brother-in-law. They love it! Said it is a world’s difference when walking their dogs.”

Final Verdict

For the price point, sturdiness and design, the SparklyPets Hands-Free Leash is a must-have purchase for dog walking. In other words, it’s 100% Henry-approved! My only complaint is that I haven’t gotten my hands on a hands-free leash sooner (pun intended).

Where to Buy the SparklyPet Hands-Free Leash

Sparklypets Hands Free Dog Leash For Medium And Large Dogs

The SparklyPets Leash retails on Amazon for about $24, which is on the affordable end of hands-free dog leashes. Choose from six different standard colors and two premium colors that come with a waist pouch attached to the belt (note that the premium colors do cost more). You can also purchase the hands-free leash for two dogs or buy the two-dog attachment separately. Don’t walk another day with your hands tied up!

What’s the Difference Between Fleas and Ticks? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/flea-v-tick/ Fri, 27 Jan 2023 16:54:08 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=508807 Side by side comparison of a lose up of a flea and a tick

Having fleas and ticks in and around your home can be worrisome — especially for those of us with pets.

Though fleas (photo on left, above) and ticks (photo on right) both feed on the blood of mammals, transmit diseases and sometimes cause painful allergic reactions, they’re actually very different.

Fleas are tiny blood-sucking insects that infect wild animals (think raccoons and rodents) as well as domestic ones (mainly dogs and cats). They reproduce quickly and attach to one host throughout their lifetime.

“Fleas are fantastic jumpers,” says Katelyn A. Kesheimer, Ph.D., an assistant professor and extension specialist at the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, Auburn University. Their large back legs let them jump more than six inches. For a small insect, that’s a huge leap!

Ticks are slightly larger than fleas, but still small and hard to spot. Members of the arachnid family (i.e., spiders and mites), they’re eight-legged hitchhikers who latch onto their prey, burying their heads into the skin after biting. Unlike fleas, ticks are nomads who move from one host to another at a whim.

Should you find one of these blood-sucking critters on your pet, it’s important to recognize the specific signs and symptoms of each so you’ll know what to do.

What Do Fleas and Ticks Look Like?

Though both are relatively small, fleas and ticks have noticeable physical differences. Here’s how to tell which is which.

What fleas look like

Fleas are usually dark reddish-brown to black with flat, wingless bodies and needle-like mouthparts. When they bite, they penetrate the skin, causing itching and swelling. Adult fleas measure about 1/8-in. long with three pairs of legs.

Jim Fredericks, Ph.D., an entomology and wildlife ecology specialist and senior vice president of public affairs for the National Pest Management Association, says fleas can be hard to spot with the naked eye because they move so fast along the animal’s body. “Flea combs and wetting an animal’s hair can help you grasp them for a visual inspection,” he said.

What ticks look like

Nearly 100 tick species live in the United States, and they come in all kinds of colors (brown, black, gray, red, yellow, etc.). The most common types in North America include blacklegged/deer, American dog, brown dog, lone star and Rocky Mountain wood ticks.

Ticks can range from 1/8-in. (the size of a sesame seed) to as much as 1/2-inch. They’re flat top to bottom but grow round when engorged with blood. Nymph and adult ticks have four pairs of legs but only three pairs in the larvae stage.

Did you know? A recent survey found 63% of Americans have seen or removed a tick from themselves, someone else or a pet.

Where Do Fleas and Ticks Live?

Fleas

“Almost all indoor flea infestations are because of a pet (or other animal),” says Kesheimer. Fleas may live in the yard for a while. But as soon as they find a ride into the house, they’ll abandon the outdoor life for the warmth of the indoors.

Fleas are generally content to spend their entire lives on the same hairy dog or furry cat, happily feeding and reproducing. They lay their eggs, which eventually fall off the animal and hatch into tiny worm-like larvae, infesting carpets and furniture. After emerging as adult fleas, they’ll jump back onto their host, and the cycle continues.

Did you know? Fleas can produce as many as 400 to 500 offspring in their lifetime.

Ticks

Ticks thrive in warm, humid climates and prefer to hide in tall grass, scrubs and wooded areas. They’re not only relegated to forested or rural areas; they can also be found in urban centers or coastal locations.

“Ticks usually contact a host by crawling up on the tips of low-growing vegetation and waiting for a host to pass by and brush the vegetation,” says Fredericks. Keep in mind a tick can be really patient, often waiting weeks or months for its next host to come along.

Handy tick locator: To find out which type of ticks live in your part of the country, check out this Tick Surveillance map from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Signs of Fleas vs. Ticks

Here’s how to determine whether you’re dealing with a flea or tick infestation.

Signs of Fleas

 • Pet scratching an irritated or infected spot;
 • Hair or fur loss;
 • Tiny black specks (flea feces) on the skin, pet beds, carpets or linens.

For humans, you may find itchy red bites around the feet and lower legs. “This is an easy jump for a flea to make from a dog to your leg,” says Kesheimer.

Signs of Ticks

Indications that your pet or you may have been bitten by a tick:

 • Sighting of an actual tick on you or your pet’s body;
 • You find ticks or their eggs in potted plants or elsewhere in the garden;
 • Your pet (or you) feels lethargic, with muscle weakness, loss of appetite, trouble breathing or vomiting.

Health Risks of Fleas vs. Ticks

Should you be concerned about health risks associated with fleas and ticks in your home?

For common fleas, Kesheimer says, “Not really.”

For the most part, flea bites can be itchy and annoying, but it’s rare they become a vector for diseases. A kind of tapeworm can be transmitted by fleas, but it’s rare and doesn’t generally cause serious health effects.

Ticks are another story.

In the U.S., Kesheimer says ticks are responsible for most vector-borne illnesses. The most common are Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Because tick-borne diseases can easily go undiagnosed and bring long-lasting consequences, it’s important to seek medical attention immediately if you suspect you’ve been bitten by a tick, aren’t feeling well or experiencing strange symptoms. Different species of ticks pose different threats to your health.

Fortunately, antibiotics can treat most tick-borne illnesses.

How To Get Rid of Fleas vs. Ticks

“It’s complicated,” says Kesheimer. “Since fleas are very small, you might not see them with your naked eye until there are a lot of them.” In the case of an infestation, she says you’ll likely notice tiny black specs jumping all around.

To get rid of fleas completely, you should:

 • Treat pets at the same time you treat the home;
 • Vacuum carpets, floors and upholstery frequently;
 • Wash bed linens, collars and plush toys in hot water;
 • Seal entry points around the perimeter of the home, since fleas can catch rides on rodents.
 • Look for flea larvae and spray with indoor insecticides, or try natural remedies.

The best way to reduce the number of ticks:

 • Check yourself and your pet before coming indoors;
 • Keep grasses and vegetation in the yard mowed and trimmed;
 • Spray an outdoor insecticide or repellent;
 • Remove ticks immediately (here’s how);
 • For a large infestation, call a pest control professional.

For ticks and fleas, talk to your vet about treatments and preventative options.

What’s a Catio and Why Would I Want One? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/what-is-a-catio-backyard-cats/ Fri, 30 Dec 2022 12:28:54 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=500830 I first heard the word catio from my friend who’s a park ranger. She witnesses firsthand the damage outdoor domestic cats do to ecosystems and endangered species, and sees catios — outside enclosures for cats — as the solution.

Cats are the No. 1 threat to birds in the U.S., killing an estimated 2.4 billion every year. That’s 20 percent of the total bird population. Domestic cats allowed to roam outside also kill millions of small mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

Cats are cute to us, but from the perspective of local wildlife, they’re huge apex predators,” says Liz Baessler, senior editor at Gardening Know How.

“That’s why more and more people are opting to install a catio that lets your cat experience the sights, sounds and sensations of being outdoors, all while keeping their would-be prey at a safe distance. It also protects your cat from the dangers of the wide world, from cars to rival cats to the occasional even bigger predator.”

Here’s more about why you might want a catio, and how to make or buying one.

What Is a Catio?

A catio, aka cat patio, is an enclosed structure that lets cats hang out in a safe outdoor environment. Walls are usually mesh or wire, and they often include a cat door. They range from small window boxes to large, complex patios.

Types of Catios

large catio attached to a house

Catios come in many shapes and sizes, from simple wire-mesh boxes to elaborate multi-level playgrounds. They can be DIY, built from a kit or custom constructed by professional catio makers.

“The options for catios are endless,” says Cynthia Chomos, catio designer and founder of Catio Spaces. “If you only have a small area to work with, keep in mind cats love high spaces, and you can add lots of shelves for vertical and horizontal movement in a catio.”

You can also add tunnels around the yard at various elevations for further cat exploration.

Stand-alone catios

Freestanding catios are not attached to the home, so they can be placed anywhere in your yard or garden. One drawback: “Kitty guardians must take their felines and put them in and take them out,” says Yvette Bacha of Hellas Custom Catios. “This is not often requested, as cats usually like to do things on their own terms.”

To solve this dilemma, some people install above-ground tunnels between their home and the catio.

Attached catios

Attached catios often include a pet door from the house, which lets cats go back and forth at their leisure. “This is the best for cats,” says Bacha. “If something scares them outside in the catio, they can run back into the home to their preferred safe spot.”

Attached catios can be as small as removable window or balcony boxes or as big as a porch, which some people convert into a catio, says Robert Johnston, owner of Catio Bob. He recommends the porch conversion. “Larger attached-to-home and freestanding catios with insect screen overlays are great for kitties and human minions as well,” he says.

Catio Benefits

Catios are a win-win-win for humans, cats and wildlife because:

 • Cat safety: Cats can safely enjoy the outdoors without getting lost, hit by a car or attacked by dogs, other cats and wildlife.
 • Entertainment: Physical and mental stimulation means cats are less likely to be bored and develop bad behaviors.
 • Wildlife: Protecting birds is becoming more urgent as increasing stresses from climate change and habitat over-development threatens many species.
 • Friendliness: Catios help reduce multi-cat issues by adding more territory.
 • Bonding: Outdoor space helps with human-feline interaction and bonding.
 • Disease: When cats eat wildlife, they can contract and spread toxoplasmosis, a brain parasite. That’s harmful to humans (especially pregnant women) and deadly to many wild animals.
 • Smell: You can move the litter box and its odors outside. (Keep an indoor box for when they don’t feel up to going outside.)
 • Money: Keeping your cat safe means avoiding vet bills from injuries or illnesses.
 • Neighborliness: Your neighbors will probably appreciate not having cats in their garden beds or around their bird feeders.
 • Less stress: You’ll have peace of mind knowing your cat is safe and enriched with fresh air, exercise, sunbathing and bird watching.

“We have not heard or experienced any cons of a catio,” says Bacha. “Even clients who had cats who previously roamed the neighborhood unsupervised said their cats acclimated well to the new enclosure.”

Catio Faux Pas

The only way to go wrong with a catio is failing to consider your cat’s habits and comfort.

“Catios can be tailored to a cat’s specific needs, so it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach,” says Chomos. “For example, mobility or sight-challenged cats will benefit from design elements such as ramps and railings, and soft landings such as grass or outdoor rugs.”

Also, renters should avoid securing a catio to their building without prior landlord approval.

How To Build a Catio

cat inside a catio looking out into a backyard

Before you start, plan out the design, size and features — things like scratching posts, climbing structures and built-in toys.

“Make sure the catio is located in a safe and secure area, and consider how your cat will be able to access it,” says Lance Harding, owner of Cat-Topia. “Also, ensure that the catio is secure and cannot be easily escaped from or accessed by other animals.”

Building a catio is similar to building a house. A level foundation is key, and use pressure-treated 4x4s for the frame if you’re building on grass.

Some other aspects to keep in mind:

 • Local building codes and Homeowner’s Association rules;
 • Appropriate mesh for cat safety and area predators (usually galvanized welded wire);
 • Durability and look of the wooden frame (natural, stained or painted);
 • Whether the cat can dig underneath it to escape;
 • Whether you want a mesh roof or a solid one to keep out the elements and offer shade;
 • Type of floor — grass, decking or pavers;
 • Personalizing it to your cat’s curiosities, activities and physical capabilities with elements like cedar shelves, perches for lounging and cat-safe plants;
 • Steering clear of hazards like vinyl-coated wire (choking hazard) and artificial grass (too hot);
 • Environmental conditions. “Location is key,” says Chomos. “Keep in mind cats love basking in the sun, so an area with partial sun exposure is ideal. Polycarbonate roofing provides year-round enjoyment, and shade can be created with awnings, sailcloth, cat cubbies or a bench to lay under.”

Catios for Sale

If you’re not feeling motivated to DIY, there are a lot of options for buying a catio. “Make sure the catio is large enough for your cat to move around comfortably and has enough space for them to climb, play and rest,” says Harding.

Also consider:

 • The durability of the materials and ease of maintenance;
 • Your budget;
 • Features that appeal to your cat, like scratching posts and climbing structures.

Here are some of our picks:

 • Best budget moveable catio: Aivituvin Cat House, with wheels and a waterproof asphalt roof, for less than $300.
 • Best window catio splurge: Cat-Topia Kittens Playpen Catio, with room for two cats, plus a ladder, solar lanterns and pleasant wooden aesthetic.
 • Best DIY catio manual: Hellas Custom Catios, with chapters on building codes, materials, location, construction, kitty bling and other vital catifications.
 • Best DIY catio plans: Catio Spaces comprehensive designs plans, including window boxes, tunnels, large enclosures and litter box spaces.

For all types of catios, Bacha, Johnston and Harding‘s companies make custom DIY kits to fit your home, budget and cat’s unique personality. And if you’re in Seattle, Catio Spaces can custom-make you one.

“You won’t regret it,” says Johnston. “Like all my customers say, and I mean all, it’s the best thing they ever did for their kitties and themselves.”

How To Stop Dogs from Marking Their Territory in Your Yard https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-stop-dogs-from-marking-their-territory-in-your-yard/ Mon, 31 Oct 2022 17:50:13 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=487328 Whether you own a dog or not, dog pee can find its way into your yard and kill your grass. Dog urine is a combination of lactic acid and urea. Interestingly, urea is valued in fertilizer for its high concentration of nitrogen. But too much nitrogen will fry your luscious greenery to a crisp.

“I have two female dogs, so I have firsthand experience [with burnt grass],” says Jim Baird, Ph.D., a turfgrass specialist at the University of California, Riverside.

Theoretically, he says, opting for a grass species that utilizes rhizomes (underground stems) and stolons (above-ground runners or lateral stems) should allow for quicker recovery from urine spraying. But if you’re like Baird, whose pups mark the same spot again and again, we have some tips.

Here’s why dogs mark their territory and how to stop them from doing it in your yard, according to canine experts.

Why Are Dogs Marking in My Yard?

“Marking is natural behavior and a form of communication for both male and female dogs,” says Dr. Annette Louviere, data and veterinary genetics manager at Wisdom Panel.

Marking and peeing are both forms of urinating. But instead of relieving themselves, Louviere says dogs mark “as a way to let others know they are present and to demonstrate ownership.” Dogs typically mark where another dog has been or urinated previously.

Intact dogs are more likely to mark than spayed or neutered dogs, but pups that began marking before being fixed can continue the behavior.

Usually, you’ll recognize a dog is marking versus peeing if they’re going on a vertical surface with their leg raised. But this isn’t a hard rule. Dogs will sometimes mark on a horizontal surface and may or may not have their leg lifted, Louviere says.

If a dog is marking in your yard, it’s probably in small quantities. And there are ways to discourage the behavior without feuding with the neighbors.

How To Stop a Dog from Marking in Your Yard

Here are seven actions you can take to stop dogs from marking:

Restrict access

Keep them out with a decorative fence. We can’t guarantee a passing pup won’t mark your fence, so line it with gravel or mulch instead of vegetation.

For a temporary solution that’s also budget-friendly, try installing a DIY fence around the previously marked areas. For a natural dog barrier, pick up some prickly plants at a nursery or create a thorny barrier with rosebush, Hawthorne or blackberry clippings.

Change fertilizers

If you’re using an animal-based fertilizer, consider swapping it for a plant-based fertilizer.

Bone meal fertilizer is popular with gardeners cultivating colorful blossoms and fruit. It’s made from the ground-up bones of animals, a common ingredient in all-purpose organic fertilizers. While great for your blooms, the smell of its core ingredient could attract dogs to your yard.

Clean the area

Where one dog marks, you’re bound to see another marking the same spot. That’s because, Louviere says, “urine marking is a form of messaging. The dog may be communicating with other dogs that may have urinated or marked in the yard.”

According to Baird, spraying down the spot with a hose immediately following the marking can distribute the high concentrations of acids, salts and nitrogen, lessening the severity of the brown spot.

But hosing it down probably won’t eliminate the scent and discourage other dogs from marking in the same location, Louviere says. Instead, when feasible, treat the area or objects with an enzymatic cleaner.

Use dog repellents

Homemade repellents for dogs range from spicy peppers to a vinegar and citrus solution. While budget-friendly and easy to apply, they come with some downsides — only temporary effectiveness, increased likelihood of attracting other pests, and possibly harming the lawn you’re trying to save.

You’ll find some commercial dog repellents, and even high-tech gadgets dispensing ultrasonic sound to keep pups and other pests away. However, they come with mediocre or poor user reviews.

Avoid placing new items in your yard

New or novel objects left lying in your yard are prime attractants for a curious pup. Keep your yard free of objects to deter neighborhood dogs from stopping, sniffing and marking their territory.

Work with your neighbors

For a direct approach, talk with your neighbors about your concerns. They may not realize the impact their pup has on your lawn, or the effort you’ve put into maintaining your lawn.

Aim for a friendly conversation and let your neighbor know if you use fertilizers, pesticides or insecticides that aren’t pet-friendly. Plus, you might have plants that are toxic to dogs. If your neighbor needs a gentle reminder, aesthetically pleasing yard signs can send the message.

Replace the grass with mulch or gravel

“Remember that marking is a natural behavior for dogs,” says Louviere. “As with all things when dealing with our pets, it’s necessary to set appropriate expectations for ourselves. And in the great outdoors, it’s not practical to think you can stop all dogs’ marking behaviors.”

If you can’t stop the marking, you may need to remove the accessible grass and replace it with a lawn alternative like mulch, gravel or artificial grass.

When It’s Your Dog Marking in the Yard

First, determine whether your dog is marking territory or just urinating often. While marking doesn’t warrant a trip to the vet, urinary issues do.

“If your dog urinates more than once per outing and cannot hold it for more than two hours, a complete urinalysis is recommended,” says Kristyn Echterling-Savage, Ph.D., owner and and CEO of Beyond the Dog. “Most dogs with a medical concern related to urinating also struggle with house soiling.”

Interrupt the marking behavior

When you spot your dog marking, interrupt them with a toy, treat or training cue. Then, Echterling-Savage says, reward them for urinating in a spot you prefer. Avoid punishing your dog for marking behaviors. It could cause confusion about urinating outdoors or exacerbate potty-time stress.

Spay or neuter your dog

Intact male dogs are more likely to mark if there’s a female dog in heat nearby. Likewise, a female dog is more likely to mark when in heat. Best to spay or neutering your dog before marking behavior occurs.

How To Build DIY Dog Stairs https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-build-diy-dog-stairs/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-build-diy-dog-stairs/#respond Thu, 28 Apr 2022 19:57:44 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=461337 If you're a dog person, chances are you're well aware of why dogs are called man's (or woman's) best friend. Sharing your life with a dog is a special experience, and for many folks part of that involves snuggling with your beloved companion on the bed or couch. Trouble is, if your dog is small, has short legs, or is getting on in years, they may not be capable of climbing or jumping onto furniture without help.

That's where a good set of DIY dog stairs come in. We'll show you the step-by-step process for building a set of portable dog stairs that will make it easy for your furry friend to climb onto a bed or couch.

Even if your dog is large enough to climb onto furniture without stairs, bigger dogs can develop joint problems that make this sort of movement painful. That's why stairs of this sort work great for big dogs (like the one in the photos) as well as small.

]]>

Dog Stairs

Determine Stair Height

 • Start by determining the height you’d like your dog stairs to be. The dimensions here will give you stairs about 20 inches tall, which should help your furry friend climb onto most beds and couches. The design can be easily modifiable if you need more or less.
 • Measure the height of the piece of furniture the dog climbs onto, then subtract three to five inches. This is the ideal stair height for your situation. Building the stairs to come level with the top of the bed or couch makes them larger and heavier than necessary.

Puppy Slow Feeder

My puppy was eating his food too fast and vomiting it right back up. Instead of buying a slow-feed bowl, I drilled holes in a 12-inch length of 2-in. PVC pipe and capped the ends. Then I filled the tube with puppy food.

My puppy has to roll it around to get the food to fall out of the holes. That slows him down and avoids the mess. Be sure the holes are large enough for the food to come out! – Charlie May.

Lowe’s To Open Petco Shops in Stores https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/petco-shops-in-lowes-stores/ Thu, 17 Feb 2022 17:14:27 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=449365 Lowe’s and Petco are joining forces. The two companies recently announced plans to open Petco shops inside 15 existing Lowe’s locations in Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina by the end of March.

Lowe’s hopes these Petco shops will turn their stores into a one-stop shopping destination for homeowners with pets. This move makes plenty of strategic sense, especially when you consider an estimated 23 million U.S. households acquired a dog or a cat since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.

While the Petco locations will only take up a small section of the larger store, they’re expected to provide more than just pet products. They’ll also offer various pet services at select locations, including vaccination clinics, microchipping services and mobile grooming.

Shopping at these Petco stores may not be the same experience you’re used to at other locations. Because they’re working in a limited space, they’ll offer a “curated assortment” of pet supplies and services rather than the full Petco catalog, per the news release. There may not be Petco staff available when you need them, either; the current plan has Petco employees on duty only during peak hours.

If you usually bring your furry friend shopping with you thanks to Petco’s “all leashed pets are welcome” policy, don’t worry. Lowe’s also allows pets inside stores, so you and our pet are good to go.

A Pet Camera To Keep an Eye on Your Furry Friends https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/furbo-pet-camera/ Thu, 20 Jan 2022 21:00:37 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=443902 I share my home office with Karma-Kat and Shadow-Pup, my inspiration for 35 pet care books. If they pester each other too much or Shadow barks at the “dangerous” garbage truck arrival, I know immediately and handle the issue.

I also frequently consult with pet parents on dog and cat behavior problems, but pets may not “perform” the behavior when I’m there. I frequently request pet camera video footage to observe behavior complaints, including any damage to the home.

Not everyone gets to share their office with pets. Sure, you can invest in pet insurance (and probably should!) for just-in-case pet injuries or home damage. But why not prevent damage, reduce pet stress and give yourself peace of mind by using a pet camera?

It goes beyond documenting cute dog (or cat) antics to share on TikTok, or just missing your special pet when you have to work all day. Pets sometimes get into dangerous situations through no fault of their own. What happens if your dog alerts to an intruder while you’re gone, or a fire breaks out? With a pet camera, you’d know to send help.

There are lots of really cool pet products you can buy on Amazon, including the Furbo Pet Camera. It allows you to keep a virtual eye on your pets. You’ll know when your dog gets into the garbage so you can stop him before you need to clean up the mess. Using the app, you can reward your pet with favorite treats for being good, even when you’re far away.

Treats for being good? I think Shadow and Karma like that idea a lot.

What Is a Pet Camera?

A pet camera — similar to an infant monitor — keeps tabs on indoor pets with microphones and video cameras. The Furbo Pet Camera offers more than most surveillance cameras.

Furbo pet camera specs:

 • 1080p HD camera;
 • 160-degree wide-angle view;
 • Uses 2.4-GHz WiFi;
 • Bluetooth connection;
 • Night vision capability.

Furbo pet camera pros:

 • Wide camera angle: Set it up where pets stay when you leave the home (office, kitchen, living room, bedroom or hallway). Position the camera out of paw or jaw reach while seeing recording what’s important.
 • Bluetooth connectivity: The Furbo interfaces with an app that feeds information to your phone or tablet.
 • Night vision feature: Live stream video to monitor your pet on your device day and night.
 • Free dog nanny trial available: Every camera comes with a 90-day free trial of Cloud Recording, Smart Alerts and a daily Doggie Diary. It’s an optional subscription you can cancel anytime, so you can still see, talk, toss treats and receive Barking Alerts without it.
 • Two-way audio and barking alert: Furbo’s Barking Sensor detects when your dog barks. You can pre-set it to your dog’s barking level, so it alerts you via push notifications to your smartphone. The two-way microphone lets you speak to your pet to calm it down, praise good behavior or interrupt when it chews the furniture.
 • Treat tossing: Who doesn’t want to be rewarded for a good job? Toss your dog treats via the free Furbo iOS/Android app. Fill it with your pet’s favorite treats. Play a game of catch or reward your pet for other fun behaviors.
 • Easy three-step setup: First, plug your Furbo into a power outlet with its USB cord. Then download the Furbo app and connect to your home WiFi. You’ll need a stable internet connection and WiFi signal for best performance.

Furbo pet camera things to consider:

 • Premium Dog Nanny membership is required to get all the benefits.
 • Only specifically sized treats work in the dispenser. Too large can jam the device, but too small will over-treat the pet
 • Shy pets may dislike the sound of the treat dispensing motor and need training to accept.
 • Some reviewers complain about firmware updates affecting functionality.
 • May be damaged by eager pets chewing/wrestling the unit to get all of the treats, so set it well out of reach.

How to Use a Pet Camera

There are many pet cameras on the market, but the Furbo Pet Camera’s design gets raves from pet professionals. The company claims more than 5,000 veterinarians and professional dog trainers give it a “paws up” on design and function specific to pets, especially dogs.

As an equal opportunity pet lover, I also include cats among the pets who benefit from the product, since our feline friends also love treats and relish training. If used for cats, though, be sure to set the device out of your feline’s reach.

To start, decide how you want to use the camera based on what you and your pet need. You can simply watch the live stream or activate Event-Triggered Cloud Recording and watch later. The Doggie Diary option lets you review highlights of the pet’s day in 60 seconds. You can download and save the video to your memory album and share with family or friends.

You also can customize your alert preferences one-by-one. That means you can choose to be notified only by what’s important to you — no more excessive, annoying alerts.

Furbo technology can also differentiate between important dog sounds and activities. Use the Dog Activity Alert to identify the times of day your pet is most active and what triggers cause pet angst — such as mail carrier visits — and plan ahead.

Among the top dog behavior complaints I hear are separation behaviors: pacing, foot licking, chewing, destruction, crying and more. Viewing these behaviors can help you and your veterinarian/behavior professional give your pet the help it needs. That might include one of these best reviewed thunder jackets.

Furbo’s Person Alert feature sends a notification whenever a human enters the camera view. You can see whether it’s your partner, the pet sitter or an intruder, and seek help if needed. This is an excellent feature because many dogs love people, even dog-loving thieves. I think my Shadow-Pup might show the burglar where the best goodies are.

And with Dog Selfie Alert, your Furbo will notify you when your pet comes face-to-face with the camera for some up-close pictures. No need to sneak up on them for adorable photo ops, or bribe camera-shy dogs with excessive treats.

5 Best Heated Doghouses of 2022 https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/best-heated-doghouses/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/best-heated-doghouses/#respond Thu, 23 Dec 2021 15:08:51 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=listicle&p=442929

Dog House Outside

Choosing or Creating a Heated Doghouse?

For most dogs, living outside in the winter is not a good idea. But there are times when a heated doghouse can come in handy — say, to break up long periods of indoor time.

“Working, ranch or sled dogs that may be far from their home, barn or kennel may also be good candidates for heated doghouses to give them a sheltered place to rest and sleep away from the elements,” says Dr. Jerry Klein, chief veterinary officer for the American Kennel Club. A heated doghouse is just one of the dog kennel designs that your dog may love.

What to Look For in a Heated Doghouse

Safety comes first, says Klein. Here’s what to look for to keep your dog safe.

 • Good materials: The house should be weatherproof and easy to clean and disinfect. A roof you can lift makes this easier.
 • Good insulation: This helps keep the cold out in winter and keeps the house cooler in summer. Be sure to cover all insulation with plywood, because it can be toxic if ingested.
 • Electrical cord safety: Make sure cords are well covered with a protective coating to prevent chewing, electrocution and fire.
 • Size: Your dog should be able to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably, but otherwise not have a lot of extra space. “Instinct tells them to find a cozy spot that is warm, provides shelter from the elements, and is safe from predators,” says Klein. “[And] it’s easier for a dog’s own body heat to keep the house warm if it’s not too large.” This usually equates to the height and length being about 1-1/2 times your dog’s dimensions, and the width about the same length as your dog. Measure from the floor to the top of their head, or ears if they’re a little taller, and from the tip of their nose to the base of the tail.
 • Entrance: Ideally, the door will be offset to one side, or have a small vestibule to help keep wind, rain, snow and sun from directly blowing or shining inside. The door only needs to be tall enough for your dog’s shoulders to clear, and just wide enough to accommodate your dog at their widest point.

Note: It’s best to place an outdoor doghouse on a platform off the ground for drainage and better air circulation.

Outdoor Doghouse Precautions

Heated doghouses are best used when a person is also outside, especially during the day, says Klein. “There is a saying that if the weather is too cold for you, it’s probably too cold for animals for any extended period of time and they should be brought inside,” Klein says.

Here are more recommendations:

 • Always consult a veterinarian to see if it’s okay for your dog to stay outside, even just part-time.
 • If they’re going to be outside for a while, slowly acclimate them to the environment.
 • Dogs will burn more calories in colder temperatures, so slowly acclimate them to those diet changes as well.
 • Check on them at least twice a day for frostbite on their noses, ears and paws. Remember that wind chill can cause deadly hypothermia.
 • Don’t leave dogs housed or unsupervised outside for any period of time when it’s below 45 F, except well-acclimated double-coated Arctic sled-type breeds.
 • Check their water bowls at least twice a day to make sure they aren’t frozen. Or buy a heated bowl.
 • Keep the doghouse clean.

Who Should Not Use a Heated Doghouse?

According to Klein, only double-coated dogs acclimated to cooler temperatures should spend any amount of wintertime in a doghouse. He also says never leave these dogs in a doghouse in winter:

 • Short-coated or hairless breeds;
 • Elderly dogs or those with serious medical concerns like arthritis, spinal or cardiac conditions;
 • Puppies and young dogs, because they are more vulnerable and need ample socialization with humans.

“Keeping most dogs outside all night, even in a heated doghouse, is not encouraged,” he says. “And keeping a dog in a doghouse is not a reason to ignore or mistreat a dog.”

Though not exactly what you might expect from a dog poop trash can, the Doggie Dooley provides an outside, in-ground septic option for dog poop. Once installed, simply pick up the poop and drop it inside, with no need for poop bags or emptying the bin on trash day. This backyard pet waste disposal system was created more than 50 years ago, and continues to get top wags from dog lovers for its convenience.

The Doggie Dooley works like an outhouse, which eliminates dealing with a stinky garbage can. The digester, designed specifically for pet poo, won’t harm animals, lawns or shrubs. It uses natural bacteria and enzyme cultures to dissolve dog waste into a liquid, which the ground easily absorbs.

Simply locate a convenient area, dig a hole and place the plastic tank on top. The tank’s lid opens with a foot pedal, so you never need to get close to the opening. Just drop waste inside, add water daily and a digester tablet every week, and the Doggie Dooley does the rest.

Pros

 • Amazing value for the price
 • No bags or emptying needed
 • Natural environmentally-friendly option
 • Comes with starter kit of digester tablets (a year supply of digester granules runs $14)
 • Appropriate for two big dogs, or four small ones

Cons

 • May be difficult for some to dig a hole
 • Won’t work in clay soil

Best Free Standing Pet Gate Via Chewy

Choosing a Pet Gate

If you want to keep your pets out of certain rooms or prevent them from escaping the yard, a good pet gate is an effective solution.

Gates can soothe anxious pets by creating a cozy, manageable area where they feel safe and secure. For vulnerable puppies and kittens, a gate restricts access to hazards like stairs and swimming pools.

Here are things to look for in a pet gate:

 • Size. The gate needs to fit the threshold or opening it will go across. Many gates adjust to narrower or wider-than-standard spaces.
 • Safety. Look for double-locks, small spaces between bars and non-toxic materials and finishes.
 • Types. Walk-through (doors to pass through so you don’t have to climb over), retractable, folding, free-standing or pressure-mounted (spring-loaded).
 • Durability. Wood is elegant and plastic lightweight. But if your pet likes to chew, metal is the sturdier non-edible choice.
 • Portability. Ideal for moving the gate from room to room or from indoors to the backyard.
 • Ease of installation. If you don’t want to put holes in the walls or wood trim, or you need a temporary solution, a free-standing gate is a good choice.
 • Cost. Pet gate prices range between $20 to $200, depending on the quality and features.

The following is our list of the top pet gates on the market.

Why Use a Retractable Dog Leash?

Good dog owners know the importance of taking their pets out for exercise, but dealing with tangled leashes can be a real drag. A great solution is a retractable dog leash. Retractable dog leashes won’t get tangled, don’t take up a ton of space near your front door, and are less likely to trip up your pup or get wrapped around their legs. They can give your dogs much desired freedom while still allowing you to quickly guide them closer to your side when necessary. Here are some of the best retractable dog leashes pet owners can buy today.

Note: According to PetMD, there is some debate about the safety of retractable dog leashes. Make sure to ask your veterinarian first if a retractable leash is a good choice for your pet.

8 Tips To Stop Your Dog From Peeing in the House https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/stop-your-dog-from-peeing-in-the-house/ Wed, 15 Dec 2021 13:28:49 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=440381 If you own a dog, then you know the frustration of walking into a room and finding a puddle of urine or giant spot on the carpet. And while this is a natural and common occurrence with dogs, it’s still not pleasant to deal with.

Nicole Ellis, a certified professional dog trainer (CPDT-KA) and a pet lifestyle expert with Rover, offers the following tips on how to stop a dog from peeing in the house, so you can spend more time playing and less time cleaning.

Start Tracking Your Dog’s Behavior

Take notes about your dog’s behavior and when they do certain things — eating, sleeping, drinking water and going potty. “This allows you to track how long they are holding it and help get you both on a routine to success,” Ellis says. Getting your dog to pee outside may be as simple as adjusting their potty schedule to fit their daily rhythm.

Use Positive Reinforcement

When your pup goes potty outside, be sure to praise them as soon as it occurs. Offer dog treats, give belly rubs or play. These dog training tools positively reinforce the idea of going outside and encourages them to continue.

Be sure to reward them as soon as it happens, so they understand it’s for peeing outside and not for coming through the door or some other behavior. As they learn, you can gradually wean off the treats. Until then, make it a big deal when they do go outside.

Keep Your Dog in the Room With You

Until your dog is fully potty-trained, keep them near you. This allows you to see the accident when it starts and quickly rush them outside to finish. Once they complete their business outside, you should immediately reward them so they associate going outside as a good thing.

Confine Your Dog When You’re Not Home

When dogs are left unsupervised, accidents are more likely. If you’re not at home, a dog crate, pen or small bedroom is helpful for controlling accidents. Dogs are less likely to pee where they sleep or play, so confining them to a small area can eliminate the temptation.

You can also try placing them in an area where they’re allowed to go, such as a dog run or a crate with a pee pad inside.

Treat a Puppy Differently Than a Senior Dog

Puppies and older dogs have more accidents, but likely for different reasons, according to Ellis. Puppies must be taught the difference between going potty inside versus outside. You will need to show the puppy where to go outside and offer frequent bathroom breaks.

Senior dogs may simply not be able to hold their bladder as long as they once could. In either case, you will need to continue using rewards. Adjusting the timing of when to take your dog outside is key.

Determine if Anxiety is the Real Issue

Some dogs pee in the house because they are nervous, anxious or overly excited. This occurs with puppies and older dogs. Your dog may react to loud voices and noises, strangers, sirens or other “scary” situations. If this occurs, identify the situation causing the fear or excitement.

You can help your dog by slowly introducing them to other people or situations where this may happen, or limiting these fearful interactions when possible. For some dogs, a thunder jacket helps ease anxiety.

Get Your Dog Spayed or Neutered

“Marking” an object in the home is common, especially with male dogs who haven’t been neutered. Though marking behavior can be triggered by various reasons — moving to a new home, the introduction of a new dog or even new furniture — it’s most often because a dog that hasn’t been spayed or neutered feels the effects of hormones and suffers from anxiety.

Spaying and neutering tends to lessen the urge for the dog to lift their leg and mark inside.

Rule Out a Medical Condition

Ellis says your veterinarian can determine if it’s an age issue, behavior problem or a medical condition like a urinary tract infection. Any sudden accidents out of character, more frequent urination and whimpering when urinating are all warning signs.

Never Do These Three Things When Your Dog Pees in the House

 • Ignore the problem. Proper training or medical attention should help get to the bottom of the issue. Ellis says most dogs can master potty-training.
 • Leave any pee behind. If you don’t use an effective enzyme cleaner each time your dog has an accident, they will continue to be attracted to that spot and will likely pee there again. Thoroughly clean the area to remove all traces of urine.
 • Scold or yell at your dog. Don’t use fear as a motivator, because it can backfire in a big way. Instead of raising your voice, quickly rush your dog outside to finish their business.

The Best Waterproof Dog Beds https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/best-waterproof-dog-beds/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/best-waterproof-dog-beds/#respond Tue, 14 Dec 2021 21:46:00 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=listicle&p=440428

Waterproof Dog Bed Openers

The Benefits of a Waterproof Dog Bed

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), “A great dog bed provides your pup a space that’s not only comfortable but also supportive and soft.”

But what if you have a puppy who isn’t housebroken, or an older dog, or one who loves to play in mud puddles? In these cases, a waterproof bed is a must.

When shopping for a great waterproof dog bed, look for these details:

 • Impermeability. Be sure the bed is actually waterproof (i.e. provides a complete barrier to water) and not just water-resistant (made of a tightly woven material that water struggles to penetrate). Many products use the terms interchangeably.
 • Hygienic and odor resistance. Some beds can be wiped down or hosed off. If they have a removable cover that can be thrown into the washing machine, that’s even better.
 • Durability. Generally, waterproof materials are made of synthetic fabrics with coatings that provide a urine barrier and tend to be more chew-resistant.
 • Indoor/outdoor usability. Waterproof beds may be moved into the yard so your dog can enjoy a little fresh air.
 • Size. Most dog beds come in various sizes. Make sure you buy one roomy enough to accommodate your dog, from paws to hindquarters.

5 Simple Ways for Getting Rid of Cat Smell https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/ways-to-get-rid-of-cat-smell/ Tue, 07 Dec 2021 21:49:42 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=439361 Lingering cat smells can be a headache for homeowners. Even if residents of the home become so used to the smells they no longer notice, you can bet guests and potential buyers will.

Plus, cat smells can be offensive to cats themselves. Cats mark territory with their urine. And a cat smelling the scent of another cat, particularly one from a different household, may develop behavioral issues such as aggression, agitation or urinating in inappropriate places, such as peeing outside the litter box. If a cat keeps peeing on carpet, it could be because there’s a lingering urine odor in that spot.

That’s why understanding what causes a cat smell to linger, and learning how to get rid of it, can make your home a more pleasant place to live and visit.

Why Is Cat Smell So Hard To Get Rid Of?

Cat smell, particularly cat urine, is hard to eliminate because of its chemical makeup.

“Cat urine contains uric acid, along with other compounds such as pheromones, especially if the cat is claiming its territory,” says Bruce Vance, a certified house cleaning technician with Town and Country Cleaning Services. “Common cleaning agents don’t remove the uric acid, which can linger in a home for years.”

Cat urine also contains urea, a different compound created when proteins break down. Urea itself is odorless. But as it ages, it breaks down into ammonia, which has a strong odor. That’s why cat urine tends to smell worse over time.

How cats evolved makes matters worse. “Cats originated from desert animals, so they are very good at conserving water,” says Dr. Chyrle Bonk, a veterinarian. “This makes their urine very concentrated.”

Cat hair, vomit, dander and feces can also cause a home to smell. Your cat’s litter box may be another cause. Keep cat litter clean to reduce odor.

How To Get Rid of Cat Smells

While cat smells new or old can be pesky, it’s possible to remove them. It can be particularly difficult to learn how to get cat pee out of clothes, furniture, carpets and other materials. If the mess is fresh, first blot or wipe away as much of the cat urine, vomit, etc. with a paper towel or old cloth. Then consider one of the following five options. All but the first can be used on any surface.

Vacuuming and washing

Vacuuming can be especially helpful for cat hair or dander smells, Bonk says. If your cat sheds, vacuum your home at least once a week and be sure to empty the vacuum cleaner bag right away so the smell doesn’t linger.

A vacuum that catches cat hair can go a long way toward keeping smelling fresh. Regularly cleaning washer-safe cat beds or cat blankets can also help control smells while getting rid of hair and dander at the same time.

Baking soda

Baking soda, Vance says, neutralizes acidic properties, such as the uric acid in cat pee. Sprinkle baking soda over the affected area and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the severity of the smell. Then wipe or vacuum it away.

Vinegar

Because vinegar is acidic, it can neutralize bacteria in fresh cat pee and alleviate odor, Vance says.

Mix equal parts white or apple cider vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray the vinegar cleaning solution on the affected area, whether your floor or furniture. Blot away the solution with a paper towel or old cloth. Repeat until the smell is gone.

Enzymatic cleaners

Enzymatic cleaners, Vance says, are effective because they break down ammonia, sulfur and other compounds in cat urine, vomit and feces. That’s also why they remove old cat smells better than baking soda or vinegar and water.

Follow label instructions for use. Instructions for how to get cat pee out of carpet might differ from getting it out of laundry. In general, thoroughly spray the affected area and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes. Then blot or scrub away the solution and let it air dry for a few hours.

Hydrogen peroxide

Finally, Vance recommends hydrogen peroxide because it oxidizes the ammonia smell. Pour it directly on the affected area, let it rest for five minutes, then wipe or scrub it away.

For a fresher smell, add a teaspoon of dishwasher detergent to the solution. Be sure to thoroughly remove the product because it can discolor if left sitting too long, especially on fabric or carpet.

Note: To avoid staining, test this method on a spot you can easily cover.

Still Can’t Get Rid of Cat Smell?

Sometimes, you may not know exactly where an old cat smell is coming from. Sprinkling baking soda on several suspected areas, giving your home a good vacuum and cleaning your hardwood floors with vinegar and water may help you find the source.

If these DIY options don’t remove cat smells, or if you can’t find the affected area, you may need to hire a cleaning company.

“In extreme cases where the odor has dispersed through the furnishings and even walls of a room, it may be necessary to bring in a professional to treat the area,” Vance says.

Cat Litter Tips and Advice for Cat Owners https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/cat-litter-guide/ Tue, 23 Nov 2021 21:48:25 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=437541 Cat litter does more than just fill in your cat’s litter box. It can play a big role in maintaining your cat’s physical and behavioral health. The best cat litter boxes have the right kind of litter.

Cat litter helps you keep track how often your cat urinates, which can alert you to potentially dangerous issues like urinary tract infections. Having clean cat litter on hand can also prevent your cat from picking up bacteria from their litter box, or urinating elsewhere to avoid a dirty box.

But choosing and using cat litter isn’t as straightforward as it seems. We spoke with experts for the top cat litter tips and advice.

What Is Cat Litter?

Cat litter is absorbent filler for the box where your cat does its business. It’s made of various materials, sometimes formulated with special ingredients to help absorb odor from cat urine and feces.

What Type of Cat Litter Should I Buy?

That depends on your cat’s preference. The following are the four most common types. Dr. Sara Ochoa of Whitehouse Veterinary Hospital in Texas recommends a low-dust variety. “The dusty litter can cause your cat to have upper respiratory issues,” she says.

 • Clay cat litter: The most popular kind, this comes in two forms: clumping and non-clumping. Clumping clay litter forms lumps when your cat urinates, making it easy to scoop out and dispose of. Non-clumping clay litter, on the other hand, tends to get rid of cat smells better thanks to its absorbing properties. Clay litter is often the most affordable.

 • Silica gel cat litter: This is made of tiny beads of sodium silicate sand, a porous material that allows it to absorb liquid. This kind a great for those sensitive to clay litter dust, although it tends to be more expensive.

 • Wheat cat litter: Similar to clay litter, wheat litter comes in clumping and non-clumping forms. The difference is that wheat litter is made from ground wheat, so it’s flushable. biodegradable and easy to dispose of. Expect to pay more for this type of litter.

 • Recycled paper cat litter: Those looking for a greener and more sustainable litter option may consider recycled paper litter, created from recycled newspapers. Recycled paper litter comes in granule or pellet form. Granule litter may be easier on your cat’s paws, while pellet litter tends to bring up less dust. Though good for the environment, recycled paper cat litter can be pricy.

Where Are the Best Places To Buy Cat Litter?

There are many places to buy it online and in-person. Here’s where to find it:

 • Big box stores: Top-name pet stores like PetSmart and Petco always carry different cat litter varieties. You can also find cat litter at retail giants like Target, Walmart, Kroger, CVS, and Meijer. In-store cat litter shopping offers the convenience of fast pickup, without the same deals as online shopping.

 • Small pet stores: Smaller pet stores or brick-and-mortar shops aimed towards pets may carry cat litter. The benefits of shopping here include supporting local businesses, but you may not always get the discounts larger retailers can offer.
 • Online retailers: Amazon and Chewy quickly and easily deliver cat litter to your door, often on an automated schedule. You can also find more variety online and/or coupons to help you save. However, due to its weight, cat litter may be damaged in shipping, so it’s always best to open delivery boxes outside to prevent any indoor spills or mess.

 • Veterinary offices: Depending on your veterinarian, their office may sell cat litter. While this can be convenient, especially after an appointment, variety will likely be limited and the cat litter may be more expensive than in-store or online.

How Many Boxes Should I Typically Buy?

Buy one litter box per cat, plus one extra. If you own two cats, consider buying three litter boxes. Be sure it’s the type of litter box your cats prefer. Keep one or two packages of cat litter on hand depending on your available storage so you’re always ready for a litter change-out.

Where Should I Put a Litter Box?

This depends on the size of your home and the convenience of you and your pet. “You want to find a place that is quiet and out of the way so your cat has some privacy,” says Dr. Chyrle Bonk of Clearwater Valley Veterinary Clinic in Idaho. “But you also want an area that is easily accessible so your kitty doesn’t have to work hard to get there.”

Options include a bathroom, laundry room, kitchen, basement or mudroom. There are also types of litter boxes that double as modern furniture, Ochoa says, allowing you can consider your living room as well.

How Much Litter Goes Into the Box?

Many cat litter manufacturers recommend two to three inches. If your cat tends to dig deeper or make a mess, consider three to four inches instead.

How Do You Keep a Litter Box Clean?

High Angle View of Curious Devon Rex Kittens Examining Dirty Cat Sand in Litter Box

“One of the best ways to keep cat litter boxes clean is to scoop at least once a day,” Bonk says. “Just keep it on a regular schedule, as you would if feeding them.” It’s smart to place a mat around a litter box to pick up excess litter or dust kicked up by your cat upon entering or exiting.

How Often Should I Change a Litter Box?

Change a litter box from once a week to once every few weeks. This helps keep your cat healthy and prevents potential behavioral issues, like inappropriate urinating. “Cats are more likely to use a litter box that is clean and easy to get to,” Bonk explains. “If a kitty has to work to get to their litter box or it’s constantly dirty, they are going to stop using it.” If you cat is peeing outside the litter box, make sure it’s clean.

How Do I Dispose of Cat Litter?

Scoop it directly into the trash or a special litter waste-collecting bin. The latter may be more convenient for temporarily storing cat litter waste until the bin is full, rather than putting it into a main trash can with each scoop.

If your cat litter is biodegradable, you can flush it. Otherwise, flushing is not recommended, as it can cause major plumbing issues over time.

There are several great reasons to switch from a traditional dog bowl to a more modern dispenser and fountain, none more important than maintaining clean drinking water for your fur babies.

No matter how well or how often you think you’re cleaning your pet’s bowls, a proper filtration system provides an added layer of protection. And for some dogs, cats and other pets, flowing water can be more enticing and promote more water consumption.

“Pets need proper hydration, too, and clean, filtered water encourages pets to drink more,” according to Water Tech. “Proper hydration can positively impact the health of an animal in many ways, including fewer urinary tract infections and quicker recovery for sick or injured pets.”

Reef Tank Maintenance

Choosing the Best Aquarium Filtration System

A clean aquarium is an important step to caring for happy, healthy fish. There are a lot of things to consider when choosing the right aquarium filtration system, the first and most important being whether or not it’s best for saltwater or freshwater animals. Different types of aquatic animals have varied filtration needs. Ensure you’re choosing one that will work for your pets.

Once you answer that, take into account how large of a filtration system you’ll need. Any online listing will note how powerful the filter is and how large a tank it will support. Most systems, including the majority of the options in this list, can be purchased in a range of sizes.

Lastly, you’ll want to consider the style you like best. Under gravel filters are popular because they are discrete, while others don’t like the difficult maintenance and cleaning. Other filters, like ones that sit on top of the tank, might be louder and more distracting. That might not bother you if it’s in your living room or a family room, but it could be frustrating if it’s kept in a bedroom.

With those distinctions in mind, take a look at some of the best aquarium filtration systems available online.

Pet Insurance: What To Know Before You Buy https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/pet-insurance/ Wed, 17 Nov 2021 19:24:59 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=435889 As pet owners, we welcome cats and dogs into our homes, and we hurt when they become ill or suffer an injury. Even worse, our hearts break if we can’t afford proper care.

Through my work as an animal behavior consultant and author of 35+ pet care books, I advise pet owners how to prepare for the “what-ifs” we don’t want to think about. We’d rather spoil them by showing how much we love them. But pet insurance can make the difference between providing life-saving and quality-of-life care, or losing a beloved cat or dog too early.

Here’s what you need to know.

What is Pet Insurance?

Veterinarian Jack Stephens founded Veterinary Pet Insurance, the first pet insurance company, in 1981. He wanted to eliminate economic euthanasia that results when pet owners can’t afford treatment.

The concept grew slowly. But according to the North American Pet Health Insurance Association, the industry has enjoyed double-digit growth for the past six years. Pet insurance purchases surpassed $2.17 billion in 2020 despite the pandemic. Today, pet owners can choose from 20 pet insurance options in the United States and Canada.

Pet insurance is similar to health insurance for people but rarely covers pre-existing conditions. Policies usually have a deductible and may cover different things depending on the age, breed and location of the pet.

While human health care providers file insurance claims for payment, pet owners more typically pay for veterinary care first. Then they’ll receive reimbursement from the insurance company for a predetermined amount allotted for a particular service.

Investing in pet insurance works best when you enroll puppies and kittens, before they develop any chronic health conditions as they mature. The age of the pet can influence the cost, since old pets (like people) suffer from age-related disorders. Also, because some dog and cat breeds are at higher risk for specific health challenges, premiums for them may be higher.

Is Pet Insurance Worth It?

Pet insurance may not seem worth it for healthy pets. My Karma-Kat has never been sick or injured in his eight years of life. And my two-year-old dog named Shadow-Pup also seems exceptionally healthy. But a devastating injury or illness never comes when expected. Can you afford the unthinkable?

Our Bullmastiff mix Bravo-Dawg needed eye surgery at about nine months to relieve irritation from entropion (inward-rolling eyelids). Then at age two-and-a-half, just as the pandemic started, the veterinarian diagnosed his limping as bone cancer — a disease all too common in giant-breed dogs.

Bravo’s treatment included expensive leg amputation, pain medication and six rounds of chemotherapy, along with follow-up X-rays to monitor his progress. We lost him before his third birthday, but gave our beloved Bravo an additional nine happy months because we could afford his treatment.

It’s much more difficult to predict potential risk with pets of unknown heritage. If you know your pet’s heritage or athleticism increases the risk for illness or injury, consider pet insurance.

When the unthinkable happens — a torn ACL in a canine athlete or breed-specific kidney issues in a feline friend — pet insurance saves money, provides necessary care and offers peace of mind (and fewer tears) for you. It can even make a great gift for dog lovers.

What Does Pet Insurance Cover?

Many folks assume pet insurance covers everything. But basic plans only cover illness and accident.

To reduce accident risks in pets, practice some pet safety tips. Vaccinations, spay or neuter surgeries, teeth cleaning and flea treatments require additional coverage, often called wellness pet insurance plans. Exotic pet insurance covers animals other than cats and dogs, though there are few policies of this type available.

Pet insurance may not cover experimental treatments for cancer, kidney transplants, or alternative care like chiropractic or acupuncture. But if your dog’s collar catches on something and causes an injury, insurance should cover the treatment. To avoid collar issues, here’s a list of some of the best dog collars.

Pros of Pet Insurance

Pet insurance covers pets no matter their age, except for pre-existing conditions like cancer or kidney disease. Premiums increase with age, and different companies define “senior pet” at different ages.

Not every preexisting condition disqualifies pets. A cat fully recovered from being hit by a car, or a dog recovered from electrical shock after chewing holiday lights, can still get coverage. Of course, you’ll want to prevent accidents as much as possible, especially the ones not only hurt your pet but damage your home.

Policies may set a monetary cap on claims. Limits can be annual, per condition or incident, or over a lifetime. Some policies place limits on hereditary or congenital conditions, yet offer no limits on accidents or illness coverage.

Deductibles also may be annual (good), per incident (not so good), or lifetime (fantastic!), so read the fine print to know what you’re getting.

Cons of Pet Insurance

Pets prone to hip dysplasia, bloat, kidney disease, cataracts or knee injury may have these conditions excluded from the basic policy. Be sure coverage includes issues that may affect your particular pet. Dachshunds and similar long-bodied, short-legged canines prone to back injury might require additional coverage just in case. The premium may cost more, or an additional rider may be necessary.

Certain plans take part only with listed network veterinarians (similar to some human healthcare plans). Others allow the choice of any veterinary practitioner. Additional differences may include variations in the cost of the deductible or higher premiums for certain metropolitan areas that have higher typical veterinary fees.

Where Do I Get Pet Insurance?

Many pet insurance companies offer basic coverage for your cats and dogs. The plan you need depends on individual circumstance, including the age of your pet, activity level, breed and where you live — not all companies cover pets in every location.

We’ve rounded up some of the most popular pet insurance companies, but be sure to do your research before purchasing a policy.

Petplan

 • Deductible ranges from $100-$1,000.
 • A “diminishing deductible” decreases the cost each year that your pet stays healthy without a claim.

 • Embrace covers veterinary exam costs, unlike many other kinds of pet insurance.
 • Pets must be at least six weeks old, and new pets over age 14 are eligible only for accident coverage (not illness). But once enrolled, coverage continues for the life of the pet.

Cat Window Perch

Best Overall Cat Window Perch

Mounted Cat Window Perch

Sometimes the best cat bed is something simple. After all, cats love a basic cardboard box. For a no-frills, traditional cat perch, you can’t go wrong with this easy-mount window seat. It’s 23 inches wide and 12 inches deep, and its suction cup mounting system claims to hold up to 50 pounds—more than enough for the average 10-pound cat. The cat bed folds up so you can close curtains or blinds without removing the perch. The price fits the most budget-conscious cat lover, too.

Pros

 • Industrial strength suction
 • Removable machine-washable cover
 • Folds up for window blinds
 • Affordable

Cons

 • Suctions may lose “stickiness” in cold weather
 • Best for a single cat

7 Best Interactive Cat Toys

Interactive Cat Toys

When left to themselves, cats will spend the whole day sleeping. No cardboard box or patch of sunlight is safe from a midday catnap. But that’s not necessarily good for them — at least, not all the time.

Cats, like people, get bored when they’re cooped up, and a lack of physical activity can cause health issues down the line. Interactive cat toys break up the monotony of indoor life. They engage cats mentally and physically, ultimately leading to a healthier, happier pet.
