This is great for consumers, but can also clutter the decision-making process. One such point of confusion is the difference between “riding” and “zero-turn” lawn mowers.

Consumer lawn mowers are generally classified by design (i.e. whether you ride it or push it) or by feature, like whether it’s powered by gas or a battery. Zero-turn radius (ZTR) is a distinctive feature that allows for precision cutting.

There are a limited number of zero-turn push mowers; zero-turn technology is much more common in riding lawn mowers. While not all riding mowers are zero-turn, most consumer zero-turn models are riding mowers. (If you’re curious about zero-turn push mowers, here’s one with a single swiveling front wheel and one with no wheels at all.)

To provide a good side-by-side comparison of a riding vs. a zero-turn lawn mower, we’ll refer to two models from John Deere: the traditional S100 and the zero-turn Z330M. Although the specs on mowers vary by manufacturer, these models serve as good stand-ins for our purposes.

What Are the Differences Between a Traditional Riding Mower and a Zero-Turn Riding Mower?

There are two main differences: turn radius and steering controls.

Turn radius

This is the defining characteristic of zero-turn mowers. A traditional riding mower turns the same way as a rear-wheel drive car. The rear wheels propel it forward while the front wheels control the direction it moves, resulting in a curved arc.

But a ZTR mower can rotate its drive wheels in opposite directions simultaneously. That gives it the ability to turn without moving forward.

Steering mechanism

Most zero-turn riding mowers feature lap bars rather than a steering wheel. Each bar controls a single rear tire. Push both bars forward and you’ll go forward. Pull them both back and you’ll go in reverse. Push one forward while pulling the other back, and you’ll rotate in place.

It’s worth noting not all zero-turn mowers use lap bars. Some zero-turn riding mowers come with a standard steering wheel but still offer pinpoint turning.

Traditional Riding Mower Advantages

Traditional riding mowers have two clear advantages over their zero-turn counterparts.

Price

A traditional riding mower typically costs 30% to 50% less than a comparable zero-turn mower. In our examples, the John Deere S100 costs about 38% less than the Z330M, a savings of $1,500.

Easier to repair

Because they’ve been around for many years, it’s usually easier to obtain replacement parts for traditional riding mowers. If you’re a DIYer, chances are the steering and drivetrain of a traditional riding mower will be familiar enough to perform basic maintenance on your own.

Zero-Turn Riding Mower Advantages

Traditional riding mowers have an advantage in price and simplicity. Zero-turn mowers excel at saving you time.

Precision

It takes a great deal of maneuvering for a traditional riding mower to navigate standalone obstacles like bushes, trees and swing sets. A zero-turn riding mower can maneuver around these without the repeated backing up and redirecting of a traditional riding mower.

Speed

Precision controls reduce mowing time, but a zero-turn radius mower is faster than traditional mowers in pretty much every other category.

Zero-turn mowers tend to have wider cutting decks — typically 48- to 54-inches, compared to 42- to 46-inches with most traditional riding mowers — along with a faster operating speed. The maximum mowing speed for the Z330M is seven miles per hour, while the S100 tops out at 5.5 mph.

Zero Turn vs. Traditional Riding Mower Buying Considerations

If you’re deciding between a traditional or zero-turn riding mower, consider these key points.

Price

If your budget is less than $3,000, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a zero-turn mower in your price range. A traditional riding mower can cost more than $3,000, but you’re likely to find a good fit between $1,200 and $2,800.

Yard size

If you have a particularly large yard, the speed and deck size of a ZTR mower will make a huge difference in the time you spend mowing and refueling. The S100 is recommended for yards of about an acre, while the Z330M can handle three to four acres.

Yard complexity

Yards with narrow pathways between obstructions often benefit from zero-turn mowers. But be sure to compare the width of the narrowest sections with the width of a mower’s cutting deck. The most agile mower in the world is useless if it’s too wide to fit through your gate.

Storage space

The wider ZTR mower deck requires a fair amount of space in storage. A traditional riding mower is better in a tight garage, while a zero-turn mower needs a bigger outbuilding or small shed.

Reporting for Duty: The Cub Cadet Riding Mower Makes Lawn Care Easy https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/cub-cadet-riding-mower/ Fri, 03 Mar 2023 19:04:57 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=518329 Thinking about purchasing a new riding mower to achieve all your lush lawn dreams? While John Deere is a typical go-to brand for riding mowers, a Cub Cadet Riding Mower should be on your list of selections to consider.

Not only does Cub Cadet offer excellent quality machines at great price points, but they also carry both electric and gas-powered mowers. Cub Cadet’s gas-powered riding mowers are powerful enough for those with large yards and fields. On the other hand, electric Cub Cadet Riding Mowers offer a battery-powered function, which means a quieter ride with zero emissions.

To decide on the best option, consider the area you’ll need to cover and the cost of gas versus electricity. Regardless of the version you choose, Cub Cadet mowers come with a best-in-class three-year, unlimited-hour warranty.

What is a Cub Cadet Riding Mower?

Cub Cadet is an American company that manufactures and sells outdoor power equipment, including riding mowers. Currently, there are three Cub Cadet Riding Mowers types: lawn and garden tractors, zero-turn mowers and electric riding mowers.

Lawn and garden tractors are the highest-powered versions of riding mowers that Cub Cadet offers. They’re best for larger areas and come with various attachments and accessories for year-round versatility and utility.

Zero-turn riding mowers allow users to get mowing jobs done 50% faster and are engineered to handle a range of terrains. They can cover up to five acres, with steering wheel options that make the user experience easier.

Electric riding mowers offer the same powerful performance with zero emissions, thanks to a powerful and convenient lithium-ion battery. The absence of a gas engine makes these machines some of the quietest on the market.

How to Use a Cub Cadet Riding Mower

Cub Cadet Riding Mowers come in gas and electric versions, meaning you will either need to charge the batteries or fill the tank with gas before using it for the first time. Electric model batteries are fully charged in four hours and last up to one and a half hours or up to two acres. On average, gas-powered Cub Cadet Riding Mowers use about three gallons of gas for every 2 hours of use.

As with any new machinery, it’s essential to  thoroughly read the user manual before use. To help you learn how to use your Cub Cadet riding mower, we recommend viewing the instructional videos and troubleshooting tips on the Cub Cadet website.

Here are the stats on some of their most popular models that will help you decide which machine is right for your job:

Cub Cadet Electric Mini Riding Mower

Cc30e Electric Mini Riding Mower Ecomm Cubcadet.com

The Cub Cadet Electric Mini Riding Mower has a powerful 56-volt max lithium-ion battery that can be charged using a standard 110-Volt outlet. The battery lets you mow up to one acre (or for one hour) on a single charge without power fade, and it recharges in about four hours. As with all electric machines, there’s no need for oil, filer or spark plug changes (which can become costly).

The Best Cub Cadet Riding Mower Reviews

Five-star reviewer Clark R. says assembly of his Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro Gas Powered Riding Lawn Mower was “straightforward and painless.”

“After checking all fluids, pins, etc, some gas and fired right up,” he writes. “What use to take over an hour with the old 30 inch cutter now takes 20 minutes with far less gas consumption.”

J. Blair is on his second Cub Cadet Riding Mower (a CC30E Electric Mini Riding Mower) and says, “Cub Cadet never has disappointed. This is my second cub cadet tractor, and I believe there isn’t a better one out there.”

When it comes to using the electric version, Maeck Dude says, “The Cub [CC30E Electric] mini is amazing. It mows like a champ, even the thick stuff. The mulcher works like a charm, and the electric motor is easy to clean and lasts over an hour. I would highly recommend it for towing stuff as well. It will not mow steep hills and tends to want to slide on a steep slope but it’s really a marvel I’m so impressed with the quality of the machine.”

Improve the Health of Your Yard with the Sun Joe Dethatcher https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/sun-joe-dethatcher/ Thu, 02 Mar 2023 18:29:26 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=519634 It’s no surprise that homeowners love using the Sun Joe Dethatcher, as it’s proven to be one of the most popular dethatchers on the market

For the DIYer who wants to improve their yard’s health, the Sun Joe Dethatcher is a fast and cost-efficient way to break up the debris taking over your lawn. This powerful electric unit saves hours of back-breaking work. In just one pass, you’ll groom your greens like a pro with the Sun Joe Dethatcher.

Professional lawn care experts agree that having more than one-half inch of thatch can begin to smother the roots of grass, block nutrients and enables the development of things like root rot, insects and fungus.

Of course, you can use a manual thatch rake or tow-behind dethatcher for your riding mower, but this corded unit is a solid solution for a small to midsize yard.

What is the Sun Joe Dethatcher?

The Sun Joe Dethatcher is an electric dethatcher and scarifier suitable for small to midsize yards. Using steel spring tines, this dethatcher automatically rakes a 13-inch path with the help of the powerful 12-amp motor. This dethatcher is lightweight and easy to maneuver yet has the drive of a workhorse.

The scarifier blades and rake tines are easily swapped, depending on your turf’s needs, making this a dual-purpose machine. This dethatcher not only removes thatch, but it also prepares your lawn for reseeding, tackles problem zones and helps keep your grass healthy all year long.

If you can’t be tethered by a cord, Sun Joe also makes a battery-powered cordless dethatcher.

Pros

  • Affordably priced
  • Easy to maneuver
  • Adjustable depth
  • No gas, oil or fumes
  • Powerful performance
  • 2-year warranty

Cons

  • Hard to clean
  • Small catch bag

How to Use a Sun Joe Dethatcher

Removing built-up thatch with the Sun Joe Dethatcher is as easy as mowing your lawn. Assembly is simple—after unboxing, just attach the handle. Before you begin, choose between the five adjustable tine depths, plug it in and hold on tight! This pint-sized unit has plenty of giddy-up and go.

The dethatcher easily moves forward, dislodging the thatch and bagging it seamlessly. It can also be used without the bag; however, the resulting piles of debris must be removed from the grass. Most users simply collect the thatch with a bagging lawn mower.

The Best Sun Joe Dethatcher Reviews on Walmart

Verified Walmart customer, Alan, is happy with his purchase.

“Go For It! Nothing to lose,” Alan explained. “I wasn’t very hopeful about such an inexpensive machine. WOW! Was I in for a great surprise. This dethatcher was light, easy to handle and pulled out bags and bags of thatch with ease! I did my entire 3/4 acre yard, two passes at 90 degrees to each other in about 6 hours. The grass catcher fills up way too fast to be practical so I ended up picking up the thatch with my lawn mower. It has been very seldom that I’ve been so happy with a tool purchase. If caring for your lawn is high on your list…. I strongly encourage purchasing this tool.”

I could actually almost hear my yard sighing with relief to get the tons of thatch off it,” customer Kleenk8 explained. “My yard had not been thatched for years. It is looking tremendous after two short weeks.”

Mike, another Walmart customer says, “Easy to use. Very powerful. Better alternative to renting a machine if you plan to use more than once. Great value.”

How to Check Oil in a Lawn Mower https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-check-oil-in-a-lawn-mower/ Wed, 01 Mar 2023 19:04:37 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=520730 Whether you’re gearing up for summer or winterizing your lawn mower before retiring it for the season, it’s imperative to know how to check your oil and make sure it hasn’t expired.

When to Check Mower Oil

The frequency of oil changes depends on the type of mower and how much you use it. It’s always a good idea to check all mower levels — gas included — before each use. Automotive expert Rick Muscoplat provided Family Handyman this oil change breakdown for reference:

  • For new mower engines, change and replace the oil soon after its first use, roughly five hours of run time.
  • For existing push mowers, like in the video below, change and replace the oil at least once a season or for every 50 hours of run time.
  • For existing riding mowers, change and replace the oil at least once a season, or for every 100 hours of run time.

Always check you’re using the right type of lawn mower oil. The wrong type of oil can ruin the mower.

How to Check Oil in Lawn Mower

Engine oil tank cap

The location of the lawn mower oil tank cap will vary by equipment. Typically, you’ll find it on top of the mower with an oil can symbol on the cap. The cap may resemble the gas cap, so double-check which you’re opening.

Underneath and connected to the oil cap you’ll find the dipstick, a long, thin metal rod. Remove it, wipe off the oil with a paper towel or disposable rag and reinsert the dipstick. Make sure it’s all the way in at the correct angle.

Remove the dipstick again, look for two notches and see if the oil level falls between them. If so, that indicates there’s enough oil and you’re good to do. If it’s below the first notch, add additional oil into the hole where you removed the dipstick. Your owner’s manual will tell you the size of the oil tank and the type of oil it takes.

Pour slowly and check occasionally as you refill the tank.

How to Know Mower Oil is Bad

Motor oil degrades over time and will eventually go bad, even if it’s just sitting in the engine. Before adding new oil, check the oil can for an expiration date. If it’s expired, dispose of it the right way.

You can also use your dipstick to check the quality of the oil already in your mower. The oil should be amber and clear. If it’s hazy, burnt or contains debris, it’s time for an oil change.

How to Use the Power King Chipper

Safety first, please. Grab your goggles and gloves—this is a powerful machine. Place the chipper on a flat surface and adjust the exit shoot to direct the output of the pulverized material. Then, simply feed the branches with the large diameter side first. When the beast begins to chew, let go of the branch, as auto-feed should kick in.

It will be greedy for more, but don’t stuff it too full. Make sure to allow it to chew before adding additional material. With a little practice, feeding your beast will become your favorite chore. For more information, we recommend referring to the user guide for in-depth start up and maintenance procedures.

The Best Power King Chipper Reviews

Home Depot customer, David says, “A workhorse. Took care of everything I threw in it and then some from storm damage on 8+ acres. Towed great using the wide wheel base set up. Set up was easy but a second set of hands is needed. Solid piece of equipment.”

Ed Abel gave the Power King five stars, “Much Better than Hoped! I was hesitant to start with 2″ thick branches; I incorrectly assumed that the chipper must at least stall if the entire branch were tossed in. Whoa! It’s gone without any hesitation. At first I held onto, and slowly fed, the Juniper branches thinking that they would stall and jam the blades. The machine told me to “let go”; so I did and the chips flew out the chute. Again, no stall nor jam. Soon the 3″ and 4″ limbs were being chewed up and spit out. I could relax, ‘feed the machine’, and watch the brush pile disappear. Satisfied.”

BigDibbs echoes many user reviews, “This chipper is a beast, easy to put together and operate. I use a hand dolly with a hitch to move it around by hand and it is easy. Well balanced and easy to maneuver around. Shredded two large trees in one afternoon. Not designed for shredding smaller items but does chop it up a bit, though it prefers larger branches.”

Edge out the Competition with the Sharpal Knife Sharpener for Lawn Mower Blades (and Much More) https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/sharpal-knife-sharpener/ Tue, 14 Feb 2023 16:59:25 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=513311 When was the last time you sharpened your mower blade? If you don’t have a grinder, files or the time and skill to do it right, you might need some help. The Sharpal Knife Sharpener is a handy tool designed to sharpen dull blades in a flash.

From lawn mower blade sharpening to sharpening knives and scissors, learning to sharpen tools takes time and practice (especially if you’re tackling it old-school style). Or, you can check out Sharpal’s line of sharpening products for a more straightforward fix. Your pruners, hatchets and hoes will work harder for you with less effort—what more could you ask for?

How do you know when to sharpen blades?

A quick visual inspection can tell you if the blade is chipped, dented or bent, but there are other clues too. Look for signs your lawn mower blade needs sharpening, like a discolored lawn. Typically, you can feel when your blades are dull, your cuts aren’t as clean, or it takes more work to get the job done. Lopers and lawn mower blades take a lot of abuse and naturally dull over time, so it’s best to sharpen them every so often.

What is the Sharpal Knife Sharpener?

Experts love Sharpal products, as they make everything from pocket-sized survival tools to culinary and kitchen apparatuses. However, the Sharpal All-in-one Knife, Pruner and Tool Sharpener is the most multi-functional item in their product line (in our humble opinion).

It’s a sturdy handheld unit suitable for indoor and outdoor use, complete with three sharpening slots. The all-in-one Sharpal Knife Sharpener restores the edge of single beveled blades like pruners, loppers and mower blades. It also handles wide-bevel blades like spades, axes, and machetes alongside straight-edge knives, hedge sheers and scissors.

Wondering about this sharpener’s durability? Don’t sweat it—this sharpener is built with high-performance materials like carbide and ceramic and the brand offers an impressive three-year warranty.

How to Use the Sharpal Knife Sharpener

Understanding which of the three slots to use on the Sharpal multi-sharpener for your blade type is essential. The rest is like butter (after you’ve grabbed the proper gloves and eye protection).

Simply stabilize the tool to be sharpened, choose the correct slot for the blade type, and slide the sharpener against the edge. Conversely, when sharpening knives or small tools, set the Sharpal on a flat dry surface and pull your tool through the slot a few times for a sharper new edge.

For a visual demonstration, download the user manual and watch the manufacturers’ video on Amazon, and you’ll be sharpening like a pro before you know it.

Sharpening your lawn mower blades is an important part of your mower maintenance. When it’s time to give your mower a tune-up, you’ll want to assess all the tools and lawn mower attachments in your garage to make sure they are ready to work efficiently for you.

The Best Sharpal Knife Sharpener Amazon Reviews

Amazon Sharpal review by Trey H. says “It handles everything but the largest of blades with ease, and the big ones are doable, just a bit awkward. I find it easiest to put the blade in a workbench vice and move the sharpener over it, but sometimes I do it the other way around. It’s so easy to have sharp tools all the time now.”

Mausero saved time and money using the Sharpal Knife Sharpener. “My lawn mower blade needed a little sharpening, a beveled blade. I was planning to take it to a shop or use a file to do the job myself. Then I saw this $20 tool at Amazon and decided to give it a try. I received it in 2 days with Amazon’s fast shipping and I’m extremely pleased with it.”

Avid gardener, Eddygirl offers tips, “I needed to find a sharpener for my garden tools. This All-in-1 sharpener did the job! Now my garden tools are ready for another growing season. I even used it to sharpen my craft tools, household scissors, & knives. An added bonus was that my hubby used it to sharpen his tools in the workshop. It’s comfortable to hold and easy to use. It definitely is a good purchase, and I recommend this product.”

Where to Buy the Sharpal Knife Sharpener

Sharpal All In One Sharpener Ecomm Walmart.com

This is a must-have item whether you’re a cook or a gardener. Sharpen all your blades for around $20 with the Sharpal multi-sharpener. You can pick one up on Amazon, Walmart and Ace Hardware. With the versatility of this gadget, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Electric mowers have a number of advantages over gas: less noise, easier maintenance, no exhaust smell and of course more eco-friendly. Several mower manufacturers have released electric machines of both the push and riding style, and John Deere is now adding its name to that list. Currently, the John Deere Z370R Electric ZTrak is available for pre-order. Here’s what you need to know about this machine.

What’s John Deere’s New All-Electric Lawn Mower?

John Deere Ztrak 370r First electric Mower with Woman mowing the lawn

The John Deere Z370R is a zero-turn electric riding lawn mower. That means it’s fully battery-powered and doesn’t need any gas or oil. Like all electric machines, the lack of combustible fuel also eliminates the need to winterize—apart from parking the mower in a sheltered space and bringing the batteries indoors. Plus, one of the benefits of an electric vs. gas lawnmower it that it’s quieter than its gas-fueled counterparts, so you’re less likely to disturb the neighbors during your morning lawncare routine.

It’s zero-turn functionality means it turns as sharply around corners and tight spaces, thanks to front wheels that rotate 360 degrees.

The Z370R charges with a regular extension cord plugged into a 110-volt outlet, so there’s no need to remove batteries or store a charger. The 3.56 kWH battery capacity, 42-inch mower deck and 2-acre maximum mow per charge are fairly average among other reputable electric mower brands. What isn’t average is the battery’s 5-year warranty, or the waterproof casing built over it to allow stress-free hose washes.

Like other John Deere mowers, this machine comes with MulchControl technology, which allows you to switch between normal mowing and mulching easily on the fly.

When Will It Be Available?

According to John Deere’s website, if you pre-order the Z370R today you can expect it to arrive at your local dealer for pickup within 7 to 10 months.

Where Can I Get It?

The Z370R is currently available for pre-order on the John Deere website. At $6,400, this mower is at the more expensive end of the electric mower spectrum. Time will tell if the robust design and claims of cleaner, faster cuts justify the cost.

Stretch

Snow shoveling is physically demanding. Like any strenuous activity, you should stretch your muscles properly before you start.

Stretch your upper and lower body, including your back and core. Arm, shoulder and leg swings, along with back rotations, are important exercises before snow removal, according to Barclay Physical Therapy, which includes instructions on its websites.

All chains go dull with heavy use, so it's important to know how to sharpen the chain teeth.

You'll know it's time to sharpen your chain when it starts cutting slower and producing small, fine chips instead of wide, flat ones.

Chain sharpening doesn't have to be difficult or complex. As a DIYer, you can tackle it two ways: by hand with files and guides, or with an electric chain sharpener. I spent years sharpening with files and guides, and although this method works fine, it's unnecessarily slow. Electric sharpeners give better, more precise results in a fraction of the time.

You don't need any practice before starting. Just follow these step-by-step instructions and you'll be good to go.

Check depth gauges and adjust if needed
  • Place your chainsaw on your workbench. Then lay your depth gauge tool over one of the teeth so the dull steel nubbin (called a depth gauge) sticks through the slot in the center.
  • With your finger, feel the depth gauge where it sticks through the tool. If it’s flush with the surface, no adjustment is needed. If it sticks above the tool, carefully file it down until it’s flush.
  • Repeat the process for the other depth gauges.
    • Making sure the depth gauges don’t stick beyond the tool ensures your saw will continue to cut with enough aggression.

Tips for Buying Used Tools https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/used-tools/ Mon, 12 Dec 2022 17:46:23 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=497505 When projects began stacking up around my house (including some gifts I wanted to build for my friends and family) I decided I needed to upgrade my garage workshop. But feeling the pinch of inflation, I didn’t have the cash to drop on a new $300 table saw or $500 planer. So I did something I normally hate: I went on Facebook.

On Facebook Marketplace, I found most of the tools I needed for a fraction of the price I’d pay for new tools in a store. If you’re just starting out in woodworking and home improvement, buying used tools is a great decision. If you decide the hobby isn’t for you, you’re not suddenly out a ton of money. You can even resell the tools on the same platforms you bought them on and potentially make most of your money back!

Why Buy Used Tools?

Many DIYers are hesitant to buy used tools, but there are plenty of benefits.

Save money

On the first day of browsing Facebook Marketplace for tools, I bought an almost brand-new Craftsman router and table for $70 and a Skilsaw job-site table saw for $50. About a week later, I brought home a benchtop sander for $20. For weeks I searched for an affordable used planer and eventually came to the conclusion that I’d likely have to pay $300 or more. But then I found an older Delta model for sale for just $70. On average, I estimate I spent less than a quarter of the amount on my used tool shopping spree than I would have spent on brand-new tools.

Get better quality for the money

Ask most woodworkers about the quality of today’s tools, and they’ll talk about how the quality was much better 10, 20, or even 40 years ago. A vintage Craftsman or Milwaukee tool might not just cost less than a comparable new tool from a discount tool seller— it could also work better and last longer.

Extend the life of a good tool

Most of the items I bought had sat in dark garages gathering dust for months or even years. Tools are meant to be used! If someone doesn’t buy these unused tools, there’s a decent chance they’ll end up in a landfill at some point.

Help out the seller

Making small talk with the sellers, I discovered many of them needed the cash for one reason or another. One older couple had medical bills, and another person planned to put the money toward funeral expenses for a loved one. If you can help someone out and get something you need at the same time, that’s a win-win.

Tips for Finding Used Tools

Finding quality used tools can be easy. Here’s the strategy that’s worked for me and other woodworkers I know.

  • Comb the Internet. I’ve bought nearly all of my used tools from Facebook Marketplace, but I’ve also searched my local Craigslist and eBay listings. If you live in or near a decent-sized city, odds are you’ll find the tool you need at a good price.
  • Attend estate and garage sales. When my dad died a couple of years ago, we sold many of his tools at a garage sale. I kept as many as I could, but I sold the rest for much less than their true worth for two reasons. First, I didn’t have room to keep them all. And second, not being a woodworker at the time, I didn’t really know their value. A lot of people got scorching deals that day!
  • Ask a friend. If you have a friend who rarely uses their tools, just ask them, “Do you want to sell anything?” Let them know they can borrow the tool whenever they want.

What To Look for When Buying Used Tools

So you agreed to buy a used tool from a seller. Great! But before you shake hands and hand over a bundle of $20 bills, take a close look and ask yourself these questions.

Is it in good shape?

First, do a visual inspection to see if the tool is well-maintained and of good quality. If it’s a power tool, plug it in to make sure it works. Are the cords frayed or split? Does the motor run smoothly or does it sound like it’s on its last legs? If you’re buying a cordless tool, the age of the tool and its batteries is also something to consider. Batteries have a finite life and can be expensive to replace.

That said, sometimes it’s best to accept a small flaw or two if you’re otherwise saving a bundle. I’m still kicking myself for not buying a $200 Rockler dovetail jig for $35 because it had a small nick on one of the end edges. I asked the seller if they would take $20 off because of the flaw, which they declined. By the time I decided to pay the asking price a few hours later, it had been sold to someone else.

Do the accessories come with it? What parts might need to be replaced?

The table saw I bought needed a new blade, which was pretty simple and cheap to replace. I needed to replace the planer knives too, which required me to purchase a specialty tool. Luckily, the cost for these was still a lot less than what I would have paid for new tools. Keep in mind that these small costs can add up quickly.

Does it have a warranty?

A warranty will let you breathe a little easier if you have an issue with a tool in the future. Craftsman Tools’ lifetime warranty remains in effect, in some cases even if you’re not the original owner. Stanley also offers a lifetime warranty on its tools. A quick Google search of your tool and its warranty should give you the details you need.

Buyer Beware

Listen to your gut. If something seems off about either the tool or the seller, walk away. Here are some other potential downsides to buying a used tool.

Saving cash, but losing time

Are you wasting more time searching for a good price on a tool than if you bought it new? Don’t forget to add in the amount of time you’ll spend driving to and from the seller’s home.

Missing safety equipment

Some older tools don’t have modern safety features. The table saw I bought didn’t have a blade guard or kickback pawl. After doing some research, I still don’t know if it’s possible to retrofit it with either. If I had to do it over again, I’d probably keep looking for a safer saw. But because I already bought it, I’ll just continue being extremely careful.

Can You Remove Snow From the Driveway Without a Shovel? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-remove-snow-from-driveway-without-a-shovel/ Fri, 02 Dec 2022 21:06:38 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=495729 As a kid, I once made a snowman after a heavy snowstorm. The snow from the driveway was wet and rolled into balls beautifully. After putting the corncob pipe under the snowman’s carrot nose, I realized much of the driveway surface was clear and the remaining patches were melting in the sun. My dad smiled through the front room window.

So the answer, of course, is yes. There are lots of ways to remove snow from a driveway without a shovel. Some are even fun and can save your back. Here are 15 possibilities to consider:

Leaf Blower

One of my neighbors uses a leaf blower as his first choice for removing snow, and I try not to look too envious as I shovel my driveway.

If the snow falls light and fluffy, a hand-held leaf blower quickly takes care of business. A leaf blower works best with snow that’s less than three inches deep and hasn’t been packed down by vehicles or boots. You can also try your wet/dry shop vacuum, blowing snow away or sucking it up.

Snow Blower

I get locked into shoveling and don’t think to use my two-stage snow blower as much as I should. But when my driveway gets dumped on, the snow blower is a time- and labor-saving blessing. Plus, I score points with neighbors when I blow out their driveways.

Electric Snow Shovel

I also have one of these, a good choice for sidewalks, steps, decks and small driveways. Electric snow shovels are extra-small snow blowers that create a 12-inch clearance in snow up to four inches deep.

Snow-Melting Mat

This is a luxe method for removing snow from your driveway. You turn it on from your living room, and the mat works at a rate of about two inches per hour. A walkway mat is about $100, and a 24-in. by 30-ft. driveway mat costs around $2,700. Leave it on until all the water evaporates to prevent refreezing on the wet mats.

Hire a Neighborhood Kid

Don’t be the neighborhood grump, sitting on the porch and shouting kids off your lawn. Spread some cheer by hiring them to shovel your driveway.

And don’t lowball them. Make them an offer they cannot refuse. Good money will make them want to shovel, do a good job and shovel again after the next snowfall.

Plastic Tarp

When you hear warning of a snowfall, spread a large tarp on your driveway. Then periodically lift the tarp and pile the snow on the side. Snow can be heavy, though, so lift and pile often.

De-icer

There are lots of ice-melting products. Avoid rock salt or calcium chloride, which eats up concrete, kills plants and affects pets that walk in it and lick their paws.

Buy a product like Safe Step Sure Paws. Blends of aluminum chloride, potassium chloride, etc., work down to about minus -10 degrees. For faster results, choose a product that works at the lowest temperature, like a blend of magnesium chloride and potassium chloride.

Broom

This is best for brushing away light layers of snow.

Watch and Wait

Watch the weather report. If the snow is light and warming temperatures follow — and if you can turn off that gotta-get-it-done-now voice in your head — relax and let it melt away.

Roof Rake

A roof rake removes snow from roofs. But you also can use it to pull snow down your sloping driveway or to the side, starting from the driveway’s center.

A yard rake is not good for snow removal, but it can loose hard packed snow before pushing it away with a broom. Be careful not to damage the underlying surface.

Wheelbarrow Plow

Some garden tool companies produce wheelbarrows with a snowplow attachment. If you own an ATV, an attachment plow is another option.

Make Snowballs

Wet snow can be removed by rolling it into logs, kind of like rolling sod. These logs can be heavy so keep them to a manageable size.

Ask the City

Some neighborhood groups, non-profits and other entities organize and develop volunteer programs that assist people with shoveling their sidewalks. Contact your local municipality to learn if there are any “snow angel” programs near you.

Heated Driveway Systems

If you’re considering replacing or repaving your driveway, think about installing an electric or hydronic system beneath the finished surface. Similar to radiant heat flooring underneath tile in your home, a heated driveway system warms the surface from beneath. All your neighbors will be jealous!

Foot

It’s amazing how effective the side of your boot can be at removing snow. This is for small areas, but it works in a pinch.

You can also make shoes that shovel as you walk. You’ll need an old pair of shoes, six inches of 3-in.-dia. PVC pipe, hot glue or any other strong glue, sandpaper, a Dremel or rotary tool, a drill and a hacksaw.

Can You Leave Snow on the Deck? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/can-you-leave-snow-on-deck/ Fri, 02 Dec 2022 18:00:40 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=495712 Before we get to the topic at hand, permit me a personal admission: I don’t leave snow on any walking or driving surface, at least not for long. I’m the guy in the neighborhood with the extra wide shovel, clearing the sidewalk at my end of the block before dawn so early walkers don’t pack down the snow.

After one late spring snowstorm, I wanted to burn off the gas in my snow blower so it wouldn’t go stale over the summer. I blew my walk and drive, then that of one neighbor, then another, on and on around the corner. When my blower finally ran out of gas, a neighbor thanked me and added, “Are you running for office?”

Decks are the one exception to my snow-clearing sensibilities. They’re increasingly built with composite materials that are low maintenance. Why add to your shoveling duties by clearing the deck? Composite boards can take whatever winter dishes out, right?

Let’s find out.

Can You Leave Snow on the Deck?

Of course, you can leave snow on your deck. But should you? No, says Vince Christofora, an engineer and owner of Woodstock Hardware in Woodstock, New York.

Here are three reasons why you should remove at least some snow from your deck.

Weight damage

“Decks, like roofs, should be designed to handle snow loads for the areas in which they are built,” says Christofora. “Footings and the structure of the deck should be sized accordingly. If you let snow pile up on your deck and have an undersized or not well-designed deck, you should be concerned about the weight, just as you would be with a roof.”

Consider the math. Christofora says concrete weighs 150 pounds per cubic foot; dirt and gravel 110 pounds; and snow 15 to 20 pounds. “It’s not necessarily fluffy stuff, especially when it builds up,” he says. “Removing snow even after a lighter storm helps, and allows you to be ready in case there is an unexpected mega-storm.”

Damage to deck boards

Water in any form that covers deck boards is never good over time.

“Leaving snow on the deck can shorten the life of your deck coating because there’s water sitting on it non-stop,” Christofora says. “One of the best things you can do is make sure your deck has a good coat of stain, paint or sealant on it before the winter season arrives.”

Christofora says he still sees a lot of wood decks in the Northeast. “We don’t see as many pressure-treated decks as we do cedar, mahogany and exotic woods, which are expensive,” he says.

“The general consensus is maintenance-free is not really maintenance-free. They get dirty and moldy, and you need to clean them like a regular deck. Now they make stains and waterproofers that you can use on composite wood decks.”

Safety in an emergency

A deck clear of snow may save a life in an emergency.

“You don’t know when a rescue squad might need to come up the deck stairs with a stretcher to get somebody who’s hurt out of the house,” says Christofora. “What if there’s a fire? It’s dangerous getting out of the house when the deck is covered with snow or slippery because of the snow.”

Removing Snow from a Deck

When removing snow and ice, Christofora suggests following the same guidelines whether it’s wood or composite. Tools or products to use include:

Plastic shovel

“To avoid damaging — scratching, gouging, etc., — a wood/composite deck, use a plastic snow shovel, not a metal one, and make sure the plastic shovel does not have a metal edge,” Christofora says. Shovel parallel to the boards, and leave a thin layer of snow so you don’t damage the surface.

To provide traction without melting the ice, use sand or a non-toxic product like Ecotraction. “There are non-slip tape/treads you can use for traction, but they may freeze up and become slippery in winter weather conditions,” he says.

Electric snow thrower or small snow blower

These are light enough for low decks. Be careful not to damage the surface.

Ice melter

Avoid rock salt or calcium chloride, Christofora says. Choose an effective, more environmentally friendly ice melt blend like SafeStep 6300 magnesium and potassium chloride.

“Whatever you use, to avoid damaging the deck surface, sweep off the product after the product has done its job, within a day or so,” Christofora says.

Ice Chopper

“In extreme conditions, if you are going to use a metal ice chopper, be careful not to damage the deck,” says Christofora. “Chopping can get out of hand.”

Generac and DR Generators Recalled Over Safety Issues https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/generac-generator-recall/ Mon, 28 Nov 2022 19:18:15 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=494651 Portable generators are extremely useful for many situations, but can occasionally be dangerous, too. On Nov. 10, 2022, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of over 320,000 Generac and DR brand portable generators sold between 2013 and 2021 due to consumer injury from a dangerous handle design.

This was the second announcement of the recall of these units—the first recall came in July 2021. Additional injuries after the first recall caused the CPSC to re-announce the recall. If you own a Generac or DR portable generator, keep reading to find out if it’s been recalled, the details of the recall and how to fix recalled units.

Why Were They Recalled?

According to the CPSC, the foldout handles of certain Generac and DR portable generators pose a risk to users’ fingers. The handles can potentially pinch, crush or even fully sever fingers when the generators are being moved. A total of 37 finger injuries connected with the handles of Generac and DR portable generators have been reported. Of these, 24 led to full finger amputations and five involved fingers being crushed.

Which Generators Were Recalled?

Dr Generator Recall PRO 6500E via CPSC

According to the CPSC and Generac themselves (Generac owns the DR brand), the recall includes certain 6500-watt and 8000-watt portable generators. This article from the CPSC lists the exact model numbers of all recalled units. These units were sold nationwide at retailers like Ace Hardware, Amazon, Blain’s Farm & Fleet, City Electric Supply, Costco, Do It Best, Fastenal, Home Depot, Lowe’s stores, Napa Auto Parts, Northern Tool + Equipment, Orgill, Power Equipment Direct, Ravitsky Bros., True Value, and W. W. Grainger from June 2013 through June 2021.

How to Know If Your Generator Was Recalled

If you own a Generac or DR brand portable generator, start by checking its wattage capacity. If it’s not either 6500 or 8000, your generator is not included in this recall. If your machine has one of the wattages in question, check the CPSC list and search for your machine’s model number or phone Generac directly at 1-888-436-3722. If you call, have your generator’s model and serial numbers ready.

How to Fix Recalled Generators

After the first recall announcement, Generac released a free handle guard kit for affected generator models. The idea was to make it harder to get your fingers caught between the generator frame and handle while the machine was being moved. After the second recall announcement, another measure was introduced in the form of a free handle spacer kit.

Find out if your generator is eligible for the handle spacer kit by noting the serial number, then cross-check it against this list of serial numbers on the Generac website.

Even if you don’t own a generator that’s been recalled, it’s important to be careful and diligent in using and maintaining your generator to avoid accidents and malfunctions. It’s also important to know how to choose a backup generator if you decide to replace yours.

Honda To Stop Manufacturing All Gas Powered Lawn Mowers https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/honda-to-stop-manufacturing-all-gas-powered-lawn-mowers/ Wed, 23 Nov 2022 20:50:58 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=494295 Honda announced in early October that it will no longer manufacture new gas-powered lawn mowers, signaling the end of an era in lawn care. As battery technology rapidly advances, electric-powered lawn care is trending up in a major way— and its gas-powered counterparts might be on their way out.

“The trend away from gas is very clear where I am,” says Jeff Cordulack, who runs the all-electric lawn care service Organic Ways and Means in Stamford, Connecticut. “I get phone calls every week from people who want to switch away from gas and toxins. Half the clients are nature-oriented, and the other half just can’t handle the noise of the ubiquitous gas blowers, especially with the working-from-home trend of late.”

Cordaluck’s clients are not the only ones concerned with lawn mower noise levels and environmental concerns. Those same factors are also some of the driving forces behind Honda’s decision to exit the U.S. gas-powered lawn mower market. The company officially plans to cease all production of gas models by the end of September 2023, selling off its remaining inventory through 2024.

Why is Honda Ditching Gas-Powered Lawn Mower Motors?

A Honda spokesperson told Family Handyman that the decision was “driven by market forces such as stricter environmental regulations, shifting customer preferences and our focus on growing profitable products in our portfolio.”

Is This Going to Affect Any Other Honda Products?

It doesn’t appear so. Honda has stated it “will continue to sell the remainder of its lawn and garden product line and industrial-type power products such as GX engines, generators, and water pumps, and continue to support its service and parts operations in the U.S. market.”

The company declined to comment on any other aspects of this decision, such as whether any remaining stock of gas-powered lawn mowers will be discounted or what their plans are for electric models.

What Will Happen to Honda’s Lawn Mower Manufacturing Plant?

Honda’s gas-powered lawn mowers are currently being produced at the Honda Power Equipment facility in Swepsonville, North Carolina. Next year that facility will instead begin making all-terrain vehicles, which are currently being produced at its plant in Timmonsville, South Carolina. The Timmonsville plant will shift to focus solely on Honda side-by-side production.

Will Other Manufacturers Stop Making Gas-Powered Lawn Mower Motors?

No other manufacturers have made official announcements, but it does appear that the market for gas-powered mowers is shrinking. In 2021, California announced that it would ban the sale of gas-powered lawn equipment by 2024. More than 100 municipalities have also banned gas-powered equipment, with many more cities considering similar legislation.

“There’s a lot of activity on this front from local people wanting to make changes in their towns,” says Cordulack. “I spend a lot of time on calls speaking with town committees about my company and my all-electric equipment.”

Are Gas-Powered Mowers Harmful?

Besides being audibly annoying, gas-powered mowers generate between 90 to 105 decibels, which can cause permanent hearing damage to humans, as well as disrupt wildlife communication and nesting birds. One hour of running a gas mower emits as much carbon dioxide as driving a car 300 miles, and together all of that adds up to 5% of our country’s air pollution. Garden and lawn equipment burn up around 3 billion gallons of gasoline annually in the U.S., roughly equivalent to the energy use of 3 million homes.

How To Winterize a Pressure Washer https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-winterize-a-pressure-washer/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-winterize-a-pressure-washer/#respond Thu, 10 Nov 2022 17:25:52 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=490861

Pressure Washer Winterization

Like most outdoor power equipment, pressure washers occasionally need some TLC, especially when summer’s over and you’re putting it away for the winter.

Forgetting to properly winterize it could mean it won’t start or run well in the spring, and you’ll have to spend time troubleshooting your pressure washer when you’d rather be using it. Avoid these problems by treating your pressure washer right as you prepare to store it for long, cold months ahead.

Both electric and gas-powered pressure washers need winterizing, but the process is simpler with an electric unit. The photos in this article show me winterizing my gas-powered machine.

The usual approach to winterizing, blowing out water with an air compressor, is slow and troublesome. The method I’ll describe here is much faster and easier. All told, it will probably take no more than 20 to 30 minutes — maybe considerably less if you don’t need an oil change and there’s no gas in your machine.

Shut off fuel valve and drain remaining gas

Note: If you own a battery-powered pressure washer, skip to Step 5.

  • Locate the fuel shutoff valve, most likely on the side of the engine. It may have a small image of a gas pump next to it, or the word “fuel” written nearby. Turn it off.
  • If your pressure washer lacks a fuel shut-off valve, use a hand-operated siphon to remove all the gas from the fuel tank into a gas can.
  • Move your pressure washer outside if you haven’t already, then start it up.
  • Run it until the remaining gas in the carburetor and fuel lines is used up and the machine shuts off. This will probably take one minute or so.

How To Drain Gas From a Lawn Mower https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-drain-gas-from-a-lawn-mower/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-drain-gas-from-a-lawn-mower/#respond Wed, 09 Nov 2022 21:52:19 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=490117 If you own a gas-powered lawn mower and want to be diligent about its upkeep, learning how to drain gas properly and safely is important. As is the case with many internal combustion machines, draining gas is an essential step in winterizing your lawn mower.

You need to drain the gas because it deteriorates. Leave some in your mower's fuel tank and carburetor over the winter, and there's an excellent chance your mower won't start in spring. Over time, oxidization causes gas to change in composition, decreasing its combustibility.

It's worth noting some premium ethanol-free fuels aren't nearly as susceptible to this problem. But most folks don't put premium gas in their lawn mower.

In practice, the easiest way to purge your mower of gas at the end of the season is by running it dry. Don't fill up completely before your last mow of the season, then run your mower until the fuel runs out. This clears the gas tank, fuel lines and carburetor in one easy step. If you forget to do this and finish the mowing season with a full or partial tank, you'll need to drain it manually.

We'll explain how to drain gas from a lawn mower, with and without a siphon pump.

Siphon Method

Disconnect the spark plug wire

  • Start by locating the spark plug.
  • Pull off the wire connected to the spark plug.
    • Most lawn mower spark plug wires attach with an insulated spring clip. Usually you can disconnect it with your fingers. This ensures there’s no chance of accidental sparking and ignition while you’re draining the gas.

How To Remove a Spark Plug From a Lawn Mower https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-remove-a-spark-plug-from-a-lawn-mower/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-remove-a-spark-plug-from-a-lawn-mower/#respond Tue, 08 Nov 2022 20:48:52 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=490115 Like all equipment with an internal combustion engine, a lawn mower needs regular maintenance to keep it working properly. One important step when winterizing a lawn mower is inspecting and changing the spark plug.

I once spent a couple of hours trying to get a dead lawn mower running. I tried everything I could think of, but forgot the cardinal rule of examining dead engines: Always check the spark plug. Turns out a new $5 plug and a couple of minutes to install it was all it needed.

Spark plugs are small, removable parts that use electricity to create sparks which ignite the fuel-air mixture, causing the combustion that makes engines run. Like many engine parts, spark plugs don't last forever and occasionally need to be cleaned or replaced. A great time for this is when you're winterizing your mower. Here's how to remove the spark plug from your mower.

]]>
Locate and Disconnect the Spark Plug Wire
  • Start by searching for a small cylindrical metal object sticking out of the engine. Chances are it’ll be on one side. This is the spark plug.
  • Look for a fairly thick wire at the end of the spark plug. It’ll probably be connected with a metal spring clip or a friction fit.
  • If it’s a friction fit, gently pull the wire off the plug. Use pliers if it’s a spring clip.

What Is Bluetti and Why Is It Emerging? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/what-is-bluetti-and-why-is-it-emerging/ Tue, 18 Oct 2022 20:22:46 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=485687 Bluetti, a Las Vegas startup founded in 2019, has been getting good reviews for its solar energy generation and storage products.

If you’ve noticed increased buzz about the company in tech publications, it’s probably because Bluetti announced the introduction of a sodium-ion solar generator at the 2022 Consumer Technology Association (CES) conference in Las Vegas. The company claims it’s the first of its kind.

The proliferation of large-scale battery packs for solar generation systems and electric vehicles has raised concern about the long-term availability of lithium, the light metal used to make in lithium-ion batteries.

Sodium is heavier, but it’s a thousand times more abundant in the earth’s crust. Mining it creates fewer negative environmental effects like soil degradation, atmospheric contamination and excessive use of water, according to Euronews.green.

Bluetti’s NA300 solar generator, used with its B480 battery pack, employs sodium-ion technology and isn’t widely available yet. However, the CES announcement may be a herald of good things to come. It’s one of many reasons to keep this company and its products on your radar.

What Does Bluetti Sell?

Bluetti manufactures and sells portable power stations, backup batteries, solar panels and kits that combine panels and power stations. Most of its power stations feature inverters and charge controllers that Bluetti also manufactures.

The company refers to its power stations as solar generators, which is confusing, even though PV panels generate solar power. The nomenclature is probably an effort to offer them as alternatives to gas-powered electric generators.

Power stations

Bluetti’s power stations are rechargeable batteries that supply ready-to-use AC power via a built-in pure-sine-wave inverter. Input ports, output receptacles, inverters and charge controllers are all included in one housing. There’s one exception: The 3,000-watt AC300 inverter module, which must be coupled with at least one B230 or B300 external expansion battery.

Besides the AC300, four other power stations are available with outputs of 600, 700, 800 and 2,000 watts. All can be charged by solar panels, plugging into an AC outlet, connecting to a vehicle’s 12V system or via a conventional gas generator. Most have bluetooth capability which lets you to connect with your mobile device. All are more or less portable.

Solar panels

The solar panels are portable and come in three sizes: 120, 200 and 350 watts. They incorporate monocrystalline solar cells on a fabric backing and have legs that let you adjust the angle to maximize sunlight exposure. When not in use, they can be folded and stored in the supplied carrying case.

Accessories

Bluetti’s web site offers connectivity cables and power adapters for charging the batteries and power stations from external sources, like AC outlets and vehicle batteries. You can also purchase a smart home panel to connect one of the larger power stations to your home’s electrical panel.

Bluetti power stations can be charged by any home solar array, but the output voltage from the panels may need to be reduced. The company also supplies step-down transformers for this purpose.

What Makes Bluetti a Standout?

All the batteries Bluetti currently produces incorporate lithium iron phosphate (LFP or LiFePO4) technology, regarded as the best technology for large lithium batteries. (The soon-to-be-released sodium-ion ones don’t.) LFP batteries are less prone to overheating and longer lasting than other lithium batteries.

Bluetti claims its batteries can undergo 2,500 to 3,500 discharge cycles, more than five times as many as nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries produced by other manufactures.Warranty periods are 48 to 60 months, nearly twice as long as those offered by GoalZero and Jackery, the Bluetti’s main competitors.

SolarReviews gives Bluetti’s products high marks, finding they’re easy to use, reliable and perform as advertised. Plus, they’re reasonably priced. The 2,000W/2,000Wh AC200P portable power station with 17 outputs for multiple devices costs less than $1,500 and can be combined with three PV charging panels for about $2,800.

Bluetti Products for Casual Use

Smaller Bluetti offerings can supply power for camping trips, outdoor activities and more.

EB3A Power Station

Bluetti Eb3a Portable Power Station Ecomm Bluettipower.com

The smallest power station Bluetti offers, the EB3A is also one its most popular. With its 268Wh battery and built-in 600W inverter, it can simultaneously charge up to nine devices and can be recharged six ways.

AC200P Power Station

Bluetti Ac200p Portable Power Station Ecomm Bluettipower.com

Voted the top portable power station on the market by CNET, the AC200P has a 2,000W output with a surge output of 4,800 watts. That’s plenty to power kitchen appliances on camping trips, or sound equipment for an outdoor gathering.

PV200 Solar Panels

Bluetti Pv200 Solar Panel Ecomm Bluettipower.com

Lightweight and foldable, the PV200 solar panels can charge any of Bluetti’s power stations, whether you’re at home or on a fishing trip. They can also charge any other solar device with an MC4 connector.

Bluetti Products for Homeowners and Pros

Although products incorporating sodium-ion technology aren’t yet available, Bluetti offers a number of large LFP storage systems.

AC300 Inverter Module

Bluetti Ac300 Inverter Module Generator Ecomm Bluettipower.com

The 3,000-watt AC300 inverter module must be coupled with at least one B300 expansion battery. You can stack up to four batteries for a 12.3 kWh capacity. That’s comparable to a Tesla Powerwall, but for less money. The AC300 system will soon have a sodium-ion counterpart (the NA300 inverter and B480 battery).

EP500 Pro Power Station

Bluetti Ep500pro Solar Power Station Ecomm Bluettipower.com

Providing everything you need for home backup power in a single housing, the EP500 Pro can power an entire house during a prolonged power outage. It has four 120V receptacles.

Can You Carve Your Halloween Pumpkin with a Pressure Washer? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/can-you-carve-your-halloween-pumpkin-with-a-pressure-washer/ Fri, 07 Oct 2022 16:00:32 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=483230 For most, carving a pumpkin with knives and saws from a cheap carving kit is a blast. It’s a holiday tradition that allows you to stretch your creative muscles and get lost in the zen of carving a big orange gourd. Our family loves the idea of carving pumpkins, but not necessarily the act of carving them. The mess involved and the time it takes don’t always work for our busy lives.

So, naturally, we followed social-media-suit and fired up our electric pressure washer instead.

But does it work? Can you carve your Halloween pumpkin with a pressure washer? Sure, the videos online make it look easy, but is it a one-time thing for laughs or is it a seasonal solution to the pumpkin-carving problem? We dug, er, carved in to find out.

How It Works

For the uninitiated, it may seem like a pressure washer would slice through a pumpkin more like a lightsaber than a carving knife. But this method can work if you keep the pressure washer under control. With the correct pressure, nozzle, distance, and design, this could be the new go-to method for carving pumpkins—particularly for people who don’t love carving pumpkins traditionally.

Here’s how it works: With the design in place, the user turns on their pressure washer and uses its high-pressure stream as a sort of carving laser. The water punches through the front of the pumpkin, cutting the flesh, and allowing the carver to remove chunks or shapes from the pumpkin. There aren’t any slippery knives or saws to deal with, and it’s potentially much safer than knife carving.

The Process

This method does work, to a degree, and the following step-by-step will explain how. Here’s a tip though: The mouth of your jack-o-lantern is typically the largest shape you’ll have to cut out, so it’s the easiest to zero in on. However, to really enjoy the pressure washer carving process, leave the mouth to last. It’s worth it—you’ll see why.

1. Start by drawing a face or design on the pumpkin. You’ll need to use a bold permanent marker as the overspray will wash any pencil away, and a pen or fine marker may be too hard to follow.

2. Place the pumpkin on a sturdy surface like a portable workbench as we did in the video. Don’t use outdoor wicker, wood, or even painted patio furniture. A pressure washer can damage or discolor them quickly.

3. Choose the 0-degree nozzle for the pressure washer wand and set it somewhere between 1,700 and 2,000 PSI. You’ll want the water to act as a concentrated jet in order to cut through the pumpkin’s walls and allow for pinpoint accuracy, but this range and nozzle combination are forgiving when finding the point of aim.

4. Stand with the tip of the pressure washer wand three to four feet away from the pumpkin. Spread your feet shoulder-width apart. Get a firm grip on the pressure washer handle with one hand, and then support the wand with the other hand.

5. Aiming well into the middle of an eye or the nose (we suggest leaving the mouth until last, for effect), squeeze the trigger of the pressure washer to start the blast. Slowly work to the edge of the shape by rotating your hips or your shoulders slightly to maintain control

6. Follow the edge of the shape with the pressure washer’s stream, working slowly. There are two methods for this; move back and forth on the same line or make continuous passes around the shape of the eye, nose, or mouth. I

f you feel like you’re struggling to control the stream, use the first method of going line-by-line. If you’re a sharpshooter, go ahead and make passes around the shape.

7. Once confident that the shape is cut (but it’s still wedged in the hole), blast it away with the pressure washer. Aim at the middle of the shape and let the stream of water chew away at the cut-out shape.

8. If you’ve been patient and left the mouth for last, now’s the time to really enjoy the pressure washer method. Using the same techniques as above, cut out the mouth. Once cut through, the built-up water, seeds, and guts will come pouring out ole Jack’s mouth, giving the spooky pay-off everyone’s in it for.

Tips for Success

Because our family loves the concept of pumpkin carving but not always the practical application, with this method, everyone enjoyed themselves. Here are a few tips to help you have fun, too:

  • Wait for a relatively warm day. You will get sprayed with water and pumpkin guts. We warned you!

  • Pressure washers can be extremely dangerous. Stay behind children if they’re using the pressure washer, ready to steady the wand if it gets out of control or put themselves or others in a dangerous situation. Wear safety glasses or a face shield.

  • Use a simple design. Think traditional jack-o’-lantern faces, ghost or bat shapes, and the like. If the plan is to carve a fairy castle with a pressure washer, someone will end up disappointed.

Note: This method will not remove seeds or guts completely. To be quite honest, deer got at our pumpkins the first night they were out as they couldn’t lay off the gooey goodness inside. We found the fact that this method doesn’t remove the guts or seeds and attracts the deer to be its biggest drawback. We could have solved this by cutting the top open and removing the guts, but that would defeat the point of this method.

How Well Does Pressure Washer Pumpkin Carving Work?

We thought this method was a blast (literally and figuratively). We also felt it was safer and more entertaining than cutting with carving knives. No, you won’t be able to create intricate, fancy designs, but the speed at which you can carve a pumpkin may be worth it. As amateurs with relatively low-pressure settings, we were averaging around four minutes per pumpkin — not bad!
