6 Pairs Garden Gloves

Best for General Use

I like gloves with a latex covering on the palms and fingertips and a breathable fabric on the other side. The latex provides a good grip when weeding or digging, and also keeps my hands dry. You can often buy these gloves in packs of several pairs so you’ll have extra on hand if they get wet and you need a dry pair.

Project Overview

Diy Clothing Rack Ta Co

If you’re short on bedroom closet space or need someplace to hang your outerwear near the front door, here’s a great clothing rack you can build yourself. It’s practical and stylish, featuring a shelf to place your bags and a nook underneath to tuck away your shoes and boots. You can build this with basic tools and materials found at your local home center.

Fit the Base

Cut four 2×2’s to length with a 16-degree angle on one end. These are the vertical supports (A) that hold the hanger rod in position. For the bottom braces (B), cut two more 2×2’s with the same 16-degree angle on both ends.

Fit one vertical support to the bottom brace, then position the second vertical support on top and flush with the other end of the bottom brace. Fasten the parts together at the bottom with wood glue and trim screws.

I Tried a Hands-Free Dog Leash, and I No Longer Dread Walking My Dog https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/hands-free-dog-leash/ Sat, 04 Mar 2023 02:26:27 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=522073 A hands-free dog leash is a type of dog leash that fits around your waist and can free up your hands on long treks. It can even alleviate tension on your arms and shoulders caused by using a traditional leash, especially if you suffer from arthritis or deal with mobility issues.

The SparklyPets Hands-Free Dog Leash absorbs shock and allows you to walk or run without breaking stride. It also frees up your hands so you can get to your phone, keys, water bottle or stroller with ease.

I took the SparklyPets leash to the trails for a long hike with my German shepherd, Henry, who is leash-trained but always gets a little more excited when we’re out in nature. Not only did I have two free hands for hiking, but I was also a lot more stable on the rough terrain, as Henry couldn’t pull me.

The hands-free leash—and I don’t say this lightly—changed our lives. I take it with me on every doggy adventure now (along with these items that every dog owner needs in their car).

What is the SparklyPets Hands-Free Dog Leash?

Like most hands-free leashes, the SparklyPets Hands-Free Dog Leash comes in two parts: an adjustable belt to which the leash latches, and the actual dog leash that detaches from the belt. If you prefer, unhook the leash from the belt in seconds and use it as a hands-on leash. It has a bungee cord that absorbs shock and a handle at each end.

With your medium or large dog attached at the hip (literally), you have more control with a single-hand grip. That control can be crucial when crossing busy streets, running or pushing a stroller. While hiking with the hands-free leash, I was able to reach into my belt bag and pull out items with ease, such as my phone. I was even able to send a text message while walking without fumbling a leash back and forth. It was a dream.

SparklyPets Hands-Free Leash Product Features

The single-dog SparklyPets Leash comes with three main components: The waist belt, the bungee leash and a drawstring carrying bag that fits both. Some hands-free leashes are made as one 6-foot unit, and you lose however many inches you need for your waist from the six feet of leash. But the SparklyPets belt adjusts separately from the leash, which I prefer.

The belt adjusts in size from 28 to 47 inches and has two secure metal hooks to prevent the leash from unlatching. Henry weighs close to 100 pounds, and I never worried about him unlatching while we were on the move.

The bungee leash extends up to 68 inches, so it’s long enough to give your dog enough slack to run next to or in front of you. It also has two handles to grip: one rubber handle at the top of the leash with Velcro on one side (so it can lay flat against the leash in hands-free mode or be pulled away from the leash when walking in hands-on mode), and a looped grip handle at the end of the leash that hooks to the belt (which works as a traffic handle when you need a closer hold on your pup).

The SparklyPets Leash and belt come in multiple colors and have reflective threading for safety. There’s even a two-dog extender so you can have two pups attached while strolling totally hands-free!

How We Tested It

From the trails to the sidewalks, Henry and I have been taking the SparklyPets Leash with us wherever we go. I can’t imagine ever wanting to walk long distances with a standard handheld leash again.

I tested the hands-fee leash in tandem with Henry’s Blue-9 Balance Harness, hooking the leash to the back of the harness to enjoy the great outdoors like we never had before. There was no pulling, and I set our pace. Henry walked alongside me without struggle or resistance—much more easily with the waist leash than he previously had with a standard handheld leash.

At one point, Henry and I faced some dangerously muddy cliff terrain, but thanks to the quick release button, I was able to unhook him quickly and without hassle so he could meet me safely at the base of the trail.

Pros

 • Usable with or without belt
 • Two easy-grip handles
 • Quick-release button
 • Optional two-dog attachment
 • Two stainless steel clasps on belt
 • Available in multiple colors
 • Reflective threading
 • Affordable
 • Sturdy

Cons

 • Designed for medium and large dogs only
 • Waist belt loosens slightly after repeated use

FAQ

Are hands-free leashes good for dogs that pull?

While I found that my dog pulled less with a hands-free leash, I wouldn’t consider him an aggressive puller by any means. And while I don’t personally mind a little tug every now and then, it’s generally not a good idea to walk dogs who pull a lot with a hands-free leash, as it can negatively impact your back.

Are hands-free leashes safe?

Hands-free dog leashes are safe when used correctly with dogs that are leash-trained (ideally, without pulling). If your dog pulls or lunges after things, a waist dog leash might not be the best option for you and your pup. If you have a very large dog or a dog that outweighs you, it’s possible to be yanked off your feet. Hands-free leashes with quick-release buttons and fixed handles like the SparklyPets Leash definitely help in this case.

Can you use a hands-free leash while riding a bike?

Short answer: No. Using a traditional hands-free dog leash while riding a bike can cause injury to you, your pup and others. The leash can get wrapped in the wheels, your dog can pull you off the bike or your dog can get too close to the bike causing you to lose control.

There are leashes designed specifically for biking with your dog that have special features to keep your pup a safe distance from the bike.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Judging from the 10,000 five-star ratings on Amazon, reviewers of the SparklyPets Leash are loving it just as much as I am.

Five-star reviewer Teresa Henderson says the leash is great for those with mobility issues: “I have arthritis in my hands and use a cane on bad days—so I had to figure out a way to walk both [my] puppies and hold a cane or walker if I need it. This leash is perfect. [It’s] sturdy, fits my waist snugly and prevents pulling—the dogs have to come along with me because I outweigh them…The number of handles is great. [It] has literally enabled me to walk both dogs on my own! A game changer.”

Evalena Velez, mom of three, says that walking with a water bottle, phone and leash is chaotic. “This leash is so helpful, my little fur baby can walk and not have to stop when I have to readjust everything in my hands,” she says.

Verified purchaser Sara Greer writes, “Bought this as well as the dual hands-free leash for my sister and brother-in-law. They love it! Said it is a world’s difference when walking their dogs.”

Final Verdict

For the price point, sturdiness and design, the SparklyPets Hands-Free Leash is a must-have purchase for dog walking. In other words, it’s 100% Henry-approved! My only complaint is that I haven’t gotten my hands on a hands-free leash sooner (pun intended).

Where to Buy the SparklyPet Hands-Free Leash

Sparklypets Hands Free Dog Leash For Medium And Large Dogs

The SparklyPets Leash retails on Amazon for about $24, which is on the affordable end of hands-free dog leashes. Choose from six different standard colors and two premium colors that come with a waist pouch attached to the belt (note that the premium colors do cost more). You can also purchase the hands-free leash for two dogs or buy the two-dog attachment separately. Don’t walk another day with your hands tied up!

Stanley Quencher Tumbler: Is It Really Worth the Hype? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/stanley-quencher-tumbler/ Wed, 01 Mar 2023 16:02:45 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=520268 If you’ve had trouble getting your hands on a Stanley tumbler, rest assured you’re not the only one. Stanley tumblers—namely, the Quencher H2.0 FlowState Tumblers—are so popular that they’re difficult to keep in stock. Why? Their sleek design and ability to keep drinks ice-cold for hours make customers almost froth at the mouth.

If you follow water bottle and tumbler trends, you’ll know the Stanley 40 oz. Quencher H2.0 FlowState Tumbler went viral on TikTok a few months back. However, it certainly isn’t the only high-end option on the market. From Nalgene to Yeti to Hydro Flask, the most popular water bottles tend to be durable and are worth the money. But what about the infamous Stanley?

We were interested to know how Stanley Tumblers hold up, especially since the brand has specialized in camping gear and outdoor accessories for over a century (longer than other competitor brands).

Why Are Stanley Tumblers Trending?

Unless you’re completely removed from all social media platforms, you’ve likely noticed that Stanley Tumblers are the latest trend in drinkware, and they’re super popular for a few main reasons. Firstly, Stanley Tumblers keep drinks cold for 11 hours and hot for seven hours. Even more impressive, the tumblers keep ice solid for two days. Stanley Tumblers truly deliver when it comes to all-day beverage needs.

Stanley Tumblers are also super popular because of their design. The powder-coat finish of the tumblers comes in a range of trendy colors, from rose quartz to eucalyptus. And the 40-ounce handled tumbler comes in 10 hues (with occasional limited-edition colors) and five soft matte colors like bay leaf (one of our favorites) and stormy sea.

Where to Buy Stanley Tumblers

Stanley Tumblers can be challenging to find in stock, but the most reliable way to get your hands on one is going directly to the source: Stanley. You can find some varieties of Stanley Tumblers at outdoor and sporting stores like REI, Dicks and Golf Galaxy. If you manage to finally snag a Stanley Tumbler for yourself, we’re pretty certain it’s going to become one of your favorite cups.

Heated Vest Reviews: The Amazon Vest Customers Love https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/heated-vest/ Wed, 01 Mar 2023 14:50:07 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=439377 A fellow skier once told me, “There is no cold weather; there’s only the wrong clothing.” This sentiment rings particularly true to me, especially when I consider all the times I dressed incorrectly for the temperature. Luckily, thanks to the handy invention of heated clothing (like heated vests), you can stay warm and toasty—even in the most frigid climates.

The Doace Heated Vest has been racking up positive reviews on Amazon, and for a good reason: It works. It can help regulate body temperature while you’re out enjoying the cooler weather and has a variety of heating levels. Buyers rave about it, and it’s one of our favorite gifts for outdoor lovers (especially for folks who live in colder areas). People who suffer from poor circulation or always feel chilly will love this product too.

Construction pros rely on heated gear and rugged cold-weather workwear to deal with the elementsSo whether you are a hunter, a motorcycle rider or an outdoor enthusiast who wants to enjoy the cold weather longer, it’s time to get toasty. Check out our heated vest reviews for the 4-1-1 on this popular product.

What is a heated vest?

A heated vest is just what it sounds like: A vest that uses carbon nanofiber-based heating elements to keep you warm. This model includes eight flexible heating pads sewn into the fabric with zones around your neck, back, abdomen, shoulders and waist. These features ensure every part of you stays warm and comfortable, even in freezing temperatures.

Like rechargeable hand warmers, the vest is battery-powered, so it’s simple to use as well as convenient. It’s also one of the best winter gear options, extending your camping season well into the winter.

Heated Vest Product Features

The Doace Heated Vest is incredibly versatile. Depending on your preference and how much warmth you need, you can layer it under clothing or wear it as an exterior element. From there, you can turn it on and start warming up quickly.

The vest features three heating levels, controlled with a multi-switch design. The low setting sits at 113 degrees Fahrenheit, while the high reaches temperatures upwards of 149 degrees. Switch among heat intensities by pressing the button corresponding to each temperature: green, blue, or red. If you feel overheated, simply turn off the vest or wait for its automatic shutoff to kick in.

Even though this vest has a thin and lightweight lining, the exterior water- and wind-resistant fabric is anything but puny. This vest is also filled with quality duck down so the user remains warm and comfortable even without the heating elements.

The sleeveless design won’t restrict movement, and the fabric remains breathable so that you won’t overheat. Best of all, the vest can be hand- or machine-washed (as long as it’s placed in a laundry bag).

The Best Amazon Heated Vest User Reviews

Amazon customer RC reported, “This is an update to my original review. After posting my initial review with the issue of heating element not working properly, I got a quick response from the company addressing my concerns. They immediately took action to rectify the problem and I feel they truly stand behind their product with integrity. As everyone knows this is rare these days. The customer service alone has been a comfort, knowing there are people who still care. Thank you very much. I give these guys 5 stars all day long!!!!”

Verified Amazon purchaser ZZ can’t get enough of this vest. “I used the vest a few times when camping in the mountain … And it is warm! ” ZZ writes. “I will have long days during the winter when watching kids play sports outdoors. But I am ready with [this] heated vest. Recommending you do the same to get one handy.”

Another verified purchaser, The Good Old Boy, appreciates the vest’s lengthy battery life. “I haven’t timed it yet but I’ve been using it with a 20000mAH pack and still had a lot of juice left after a half-day hunt,” he writes. “I’ll keep a better eye on battery impacts and update but as of now I am a very toasty happy hunter!”

How the Amazon Heated Vest Compares to Other Heated Vests

Amazon offers other comparably-priced options, but the Doace Heated Vest has eight heat zones versus three or four like competing products, which means more heat coverage.

Final Verdict – Should You Buy the Amazon Heated Vest?

Absolutely! This heated vest will make you feel like you’re getting a big, warm hug on a cold day. However, we do recommend purchasing a second battery if you plan to spend all day outdoors.

What Are Vegan Leather Work Gloves? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/vegan-leather/ Tue, 28 Feb 2023 22:36:45 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=520303 In my experimental post-college days, when non-steel-belted car tires were still common, I developed my own style of leather moccasins using old tires for soles.

I lived near a tannery so there was an abundance of cowhide. But as I perfected the design, I graduated to elk, buffalo and moose hide. Vegan wasn’t a thing in those days, much less vegan leather. But there was plenty of faux or imitation leather around — essentially the same thing.

Being a vegetarian then, I was eager to make shoes without animal byproducts. As it turned out, imitation leather was not the answer; it’s too thin to provide the necessary support.

The flexibility and lack of body that disqualify imitation leather as a shoe material can be pluses with other items of apparel, including vests, hats and gloves. Imitation leather gloves in particular have probably been around as long as imitation leather itself.

What Is Vegan Leather?

“Pleather” (poly-leather), also known as imitation or faux leather, was developed by DuPont Laboratories as auto upholstery material in the early days of the industry. It’s purely synthetic material usually made from polyurethane and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), two common plastics. Some faux leathers are made from natural materials like cork, kelp, apple peels and pineapple leaves.

One of the more interesting modern innovations is Reishi from MycoWorks, a leather-like product derived from mycelium, the fibrous network in mushrooms.

All of these leather substitutes qualify as vegan. In today’s eco-conscious environment, consumers increasingly demand environmentally friendly, earth-wise and animal-safe products. As a marketing term, the word “vegan” hits the mark on all three counts, even if the products themselves don’t always do the same.

The production of plastics that go into most vegan leather products is far from an environmentally friendly process, even if it is greener than real leather production. The ultimate vegan leather gloves would be made from plant-based leather, but few, if any, appear to be currently available. Until they are, consumers will have to settle for vegan leather that’s essentially plastic.

Are Vegan Leather Work Gloves as Durable as Traditional Leather Ones?

In some ways, imitation leather makes a better glove material than real leather. It’s thinner, more flexible and washable. It isn’t as durable as real leather, though. And because it’s plastic, it doesn’t breathe or stretch. Manufacturers compensate by combining artificial leather with other materials.

One such material commonly used is Spandex, the stretchy polyester fabric popular in form-fitting garments and sportswear. Another is neoprene rubber.

Because of the combination of materials, the gloves are stitched together more meticulously than single material types, and usually fit better. They typically feature built-in knuckle protection and hook-and-loop fabric fastener wristbands.

A big advantage of imitation leather over the real thing? It doesn’t harden when it dries out. You’ll need to condition a pair of real leather gloves from time to time to keep them flexible, but it’s unnecessary with imitation leather.

That’s probably one reason why the vegan leather gloves I found on Amazon eared lots of positive reviews. One reviewer writes: “Much better than craftsman gloves I’ve purchased in the past. They fit great, very comfortable and durable.”

Vegan Leather Work Gloves to Try

You can find vegan leather dress, boxing and even baseball gloves these days. Work gloves come in many popular options. Here are my two favorites.

CLC Custom Leathercraft Work Gloves with Spandex backing and vegan leather palms are lightweight and form-fitting. Durable enough for roofers, mechanics and construction workers, they resist shrinking and hardening.

The less-expensive Handylady Men’s Work Gloves (shown here) feature padded knuckles and touch-screen fingertips. They’re better suited for gardening and other light-duty activities. The fingertips are ideal for those who need their mobile device while they work.

Save the Hassle And Your Trim with the Bucket Edge https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bucket-edge/ Wed, 15 Feb 2023 15:25:55 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=511592 One of the most nerve-wracking parts of interior painting is ensuring nothing drips onto your trim or the floor. Sure, you can put masking or painter’s tape anywhere you don’t want paint, but that sucks up so much time you could spend painting. Enter the Bucket Edge, a heavy-duty painting guard that leaves trim and other surfaces untouched while painting.

What is the Bucket Edge?

The Bucket Edge is a piece of heavy-duty aluminum that sits over your trim or other surfaces that you don’t want to get paint on. Unlike masking tape, it takes seconds—not minutes—to set up, and there’s zero risk of paint seeping through.

You can also use this painting tool to cut and mark straight lines, remove bubbles from wallpaper and scrape ceilings. That’s not all: it replaces your dustpan and is even useable as a funnel in a pinch.

Shop Now

How to Use the Bucket Edge

Simply place the Bucket Edge over the area you’re trying to protect and start painting. It comes in three sizes (12, 20, and 40 inches), so there’s no job too big or too small. The three sizes nest together for easy storage.

To use it as a dustpan, turn it upside down and sweep all the debris onto the flat surface. Pick it up and use the funneled ends to ensure every last bit goes into your trash bag—not all over your floors.

The Best Bucket Edge Reviews

Five-star reviewer Jimmy has been a house painter since the 1990s, and writes that this is one of the most useful tools in his arsenal. “I absolutely hated painting before I found this tool. Why? I hate taping off a room and it cuts into my labor costs…These are well put together, and the edges are not flimsy. I have 2 more sets on the way!”

“The Bucket Edge tools are awesome! I bought them after we purchased a new home,” reviewer Jennifer Mccabe explained. “They worked great to paint the entire home. No doubt they saved us tons of time not having to tape off nearly as much and we didn’t need to tarp off floors. My husband loves the Bucket Edge and will continue to use them in his construction and remodeling business.”

“This tool has been amazing,” customer Justin remarks. “I will never paint without them and definitely recommend this product. Saves a tremendous amount of time as well as money spent on tape. It has been useful on every job so far which is impressive.”

Where to Buy the Bucket Edge

Bucket Edge Painting Tool Ecomm Walmart.com

There are three different sized available at Walmart. The 12-inch is great for small projects, like painting furniture or window sashes. The 40-inch is ideal for large jobs. And if you’re a professional—or have a lot of DIY painting projects in your future—it’s worth investing in the Bucket Edge three-piece set that includes 12-, 20- and 40-inch models. If you ask us, it’s worth the price to never worry about paint dripping on our trim.

Merrell and Unlikely Hikers Launch Size-Inclusive Hiking Boots https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/merrell-unlikely-hikers-collab/ Mon, 06 Feb 2023 19:40:42 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=512166 Hikers come from all walks of life, so why do brands create merchandise geared towards a narrow consumer base? It’s a good question, especially when equipment like headlamps, outdoor survival gear and family tents aren’t gender-specific. Merrell and Unlikely Hikers teamed up to challenge the notion that there is a “type” of person who enjoys the outdoors.

This is the second collaboration between the two companies, known respectively for their durable outdoor footwear and all-inclusive hiking communities. When visiting the Unlikely Hikers about page, a positive message greets visitors: “Nature is infinitely diverse and so are we.” Jenny Bruso, founder of Unlikely Hikers, aims to crush stereotypes of what an “average hiker” looks like.

The Merrell collaboration is only the beginning of Bruso’s quest for inclusivity in the hiking community. Carhartt’s New Smart Vest Uses AI to Keep You Warm on the Job https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/carhartt-x-1-smart-heated-vest/ Thu, 02 Feb 2023 17:37:56 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=511110 Carhartt’s latest addition to their winter workwear collection is the hottest innovation to hit the heated workwear market in years. The Carhartt X-1 Smart Heated Vest, a novel release from the company known for some of the best workwear on the market, isn’t your average fleece vest. This tech-forward workwear includes—drumroll—built-in artificial intelligence.

Say goodbye to the need for bulky cold-weather accessories and hello to durable workwear that offers regulated heat both on and off the job. In partnership with clim8, Carhartt brings the future to men’s workwear with their newest release, which instantly responds to real-life conditions.

What is the Carhartt X-1 Smart Heated Vest?

Carhartt’s smart heated vest rivals heated jackets thanks to a lightweight design that’s easy to move around in. Unlike traditional cold-weather gear that’s built for layering, Carhartt’s heated vest delivers the warmth of cold-weather workwear minus the added bulk.

The vests are powered by a 7.4V 3000mAH rechargeable lithium-ion battery and include a charger. They also have a drawcord-adjustable hem for added coverage and two pockets in the front.

Not only does cold weather gear require layers to properly work, but it has an unfortunate tendency to trap heat and create uncomfortably warm conditions. Overheating still happens in chilly conditions, especially when outdoor workers overestimate how warm they should dress. Carhartt’s heated vest is different.

Instead of heating to a certain temperature, the vest takes into account how warm the body already is. It uses three strategically-mapped heat zones to monitor temperatures in real time. Surprisingly, these zones have the ability to automatically analyze the wearer’s environment and activity to determine the appropriate heat setting. This prevents the need to add and subtract layers as the temperature outside fluctuates.

Just open up the included app on your smartphone and set your ideal temperature—the Carhartt vest does the rest. By using reactionary monitoring, there’s no need to manually adjust heat settings as you would with traditional heated gear. Instead, Carhartt’s heated vest makes it easy to focus on the job at hand—not the temperature outside.

Where can I find the new Carhartt Vest?

Carhartt Smart Heated Vest gif showing men's and women's vests

Carhartt’s heated vests come in both women’s and men’s styles, available on Carhartt’s website for $219.19. Although the vest withstands the stressors of outdoor jobs like construction work and surveying, it still looks pretty sleek.

Want to try the new Carhartt X-1 Smart Heated Vest? Add one to your cart ASAP. New Carhartt releases typically sell out quickly.

Winter accessories like hats, snow boots, scarves and gloves tend to get damp from the snow. Because of this, boot trays, mitten drying racks and boot dryers are essential to use before implementing any clever storage ideas.

Things like home organizers, entryway shoe storage and winter sports gear organizers work as functional storage and keep cold-weather accessories from taking over the closet.

We Tried Darn Tough Socks, and Now We Want to Wear Them Everyday https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/darn-tough-socks/ Wed, 11 Jan 2023 02:33:01 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=502726 Darn Tough is a family-owned sock business with some bold claims. Namely, that it makes the most comfortable, durable and best-fitting socks in the world. Because I’m continuously trying to find the best gear for long hikes with my dog, Henry, I was eager to put those assertions to the test.

While Darn Tough was officially founded as a business in 2004, three generations behind the brand have been knitting socks in the Green Mountains of Vermont for nearly 40 years. Every pair of Darn Tough socks is produced in a single mill in Northfield, Vermont, which helps ensure quality control over each pair.

The brand is so certain of the quality of its socks that each pair is unconditionally guaranteed for life. That’s right. If Darn Tough socks don’t hold up to the claim that they’re the most durable pair you’ve ever tried, you can ship them back for another. No receipt necessary. Want more heavy-duty socks? Here are our best work socks.

What are Darn Tough socks?

I tried one of Darn Tough’s most popular pairs of socks: The Women’s Hiker Micro Crew Midweight Hiking Sock. And before getting into the nitty-gritty details of them, let me just say that the Hiker Micro Crews are some of the most comfortable hiking socks that my feet have ever experienced. Right out of the package, you can feel the quality construction and thick cushion of the sole.

The Women’s Hiker Boot Micro Crew is designed to hold up for serious hikers without tearing, blowing out or causing blisters. Beyond durability, Darn Tough socks are so popular because, as reviewers note, they’re breathable, comfortable, warm and keep your feet dry. They’re made with Merino wool, so they have that wool warmth, but without the itch. (Side note: Darn Tough socks were also a winner of a Backpacker Magazine Editors’ Choice Gold Award—one of the most prestigious awards in the outdoor industry—for their incredible durability.)

The Women’s Hiker Micro Crew has an underfoot cushion style, where the cushioning is concentrated at the bottom of the sock. If you’re someone who frequently hikes in cold weather, you might want a pair with full cushion support (available in other Darn Tough styles), which has thick cushioning throughout the entire sock for ultimate warmth, rebound and comfort.

For me, hiking in moderately cold winter weather (about 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit), the underfoot cushioning did just fine keeping my feet warm. Of course, I had them on with a standard hiking boot (Merrell Women’s Moabs, to be exact), which also helped keep my feet in tip-top shape.

Now, I only took them out on a few hikes, so I can’t speak to how they’ll hold up after years of wear, but I can speak to their comfort, sizing and design. Hikers who have used Darn Tough socks over the years, however, say that they don’t lose their comfort, even after withstanding, mud, rocks, water and other trail conditions. It looks like these deserve a spot next to your women’s work boots and women’s workwear pieces. Plus, that unconditional lifetime guarantee ensures that your socks will be replaced if they don’t hold up.

Darn Tough Socks Product Features

The Women’s Hiker Micro Crew average 7.5 inches from heel to cuff, so they come up about 5 inches above a low hiking boot. (That proved to be the case with my mid-height Moabs.) They also feature a performance fit, which means they fit snuggly so as not to slip, bunch and create blisters on the feet. It’s worth noting that the bottom cushioning in the Hiker Micro Crews wraps up around the toes and extends to the Achilles for full comfort and support.

These socks are made with 59 percent Merino wool, 39 percent nylon and 2 percent Lycra spandex. The Merino wool blend moves moisture, and I wore this pair for a couple of hours out in sleet one evening. Spoiler alert: My feet remained totally dry.

In terms of look and design, I tried the standard design in the taupe color, and they look like a standard gray tube sock with a neon green trim at the top. However, Darn Tough offers several different styles, colors and designs—including seasonal and limited-edition designs, like pairs with snowflakes around the top and others with a tree line design, complete with a tiny moon.

How We Tested Darn Tough Socks

Darn Tough Socks with women's hiking boot

I wore my pair of Darn Tough socks all over the place for a few weeks—on rough-terrain hikes, to the dog park on cold, wet days and even to a coffee shop to write this review. The soles have an excellent cushion that kept my feet comfortable for hours of walking.

The socks stretch enough to pull up comfortably over most ankles and calves, but they’re firm enough to resist slipping. They’re also not too thick or too tight. They didn’t make my hiking boots fit too snugly or cut off circulation around my calves. In terms of sizing, I found the socks to run a bit big at first. Darn Tough socks come in three sizes: Small, medium and large. I tried a large pair, meant to fit a women’s shoe size of 10 to 11.5. I typically wear a 9.5 or 10 in women’s shoes. While I think the socks could fit a bit snugger, I appreciate that my feet had room to breathe.

I also noticed that after a handful of washes, the socks did shrink a tiny bit, which actually made them fit better on my feet. However, the soles did start pilling after a few wash and dry cycles. In Darn Tough’s defense, the website does say to machine wash in warm water on a gentle cycle with socks inside-out, and then to tumble dry on low or hang dry. If I would have hung my pair to dry, I probably could have prevented the small balls from forming on the soles.

Pros

 • Guaranteed for life
 • Comfortable stretch and fit
 • Reinforced footbed and Achilles cushion
 • All-season weight
 • Available in multiple styles and designs
 • USA-made

Cons

 • The socks may be large for narrow feet
 • Pilling did form after several (ill-advised) wash and dry cycles

FAQ

Is the Darn Tough Hiking Micro Crew tall enough to wear with a mid-height boot (boots that come just over the ankles)?

Yes, the Micro Crew socks should sit just a few inches above a hiking boot that stops above the ankle. If you’re looking for a longer sock for taller hiking boots, the Hiker Boot Midweight Hiking Sock comes up a few inches higher.

If I wear a shoe size larger than a women’s 11.5, should I order men’s socks?

Absolutely. Darn Tough socks fit universally, and men’s and women’s socks are not designed differently.

Are the tops of Darn Tough socks tight?

If your ankles swell and shrink during a long hike, or if you have a wider calf, you shouldn’t need to worry. I loved the fit of these socks and did not find the tops to be too tight whatsoever. Plus, they’re adequately stretchy.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Judy Ferguson, verified purchaser on Amazon, says, “I have several pairs of these. Great all-around hiking sock. Just enough cushion without being bulky, great length for boots, comfy even when wet. I was never a fan of wool blend (too itchy & hot) socks until I tried these. No itches, no sweaty feet, just more comfortable feet during and after long hikes.”

Five-star reviewer, Laura Walczak, says her first pair of Darn Tough socks didn’t start to wear out until after 11 years. “Darn Tough has a lifetime guarantee, but after over 10 years I was more than happy to purchase a few more pairs.”

Rudy Molina took Darn Tough socks on a three-day hike to Zion and was not disappointed. “[They] wicked moisture away from my feet after hiking the narrows which is knee deep water. Kept me from getting blisters from the hikes and also did not smell after three days of use. I will be buying another pair.”

Final Verdict: Are Darn Tough socks worth it?

At $17 to $30 a pair, depending on the style, Darn Tough socks might seem a little on the pricey side. However, considering the overall quality and lifetime guarantee, we think these socks are well worth the price tag. They, quite simply, are some of the most comfortable hiking socks I have ever worn—and I’ll likely be purchasing a few more pairs (for myself and as gifts) after writing this review.

Where to Buy Darn Tough Socks

Darn Tough Socks

The Women’s Hiker Micro Crew Hiking Sock retails for $25 at Darn Tough and $18 to $30 on Amazon, depending on the size and color. Some styles are available on Amazon Prime, which means they’ll be to you in time for your next hiking adventure.

Now, if Darn Tough could just make a pair of socks for pups… 😉

Masonry Chisel

The most fundamental tool for tile removal — especially for wall tiles — a wedge-shaped masonry chisel lets you get underneath tiles and, ideally, pop them out. There’s something really satisfying about old tiles coming out in one piece, even if you don’t intend to reuse them.

We like this Irwin 1-3/4-in. masonry chisel ($14 at Lowe’s) because of its built-in hand guard, a welcome safety feature when your aim is a little off.

Avoid Wet Areas

Avoid wearing your leather work boots for muddy jobs. Leather doesn’t handle water well, so if you want your boots to last, don’t get them wet. You can do lots to make your boots more water-resistant, but it’s better to avoid water in the first place. Have a wet job ahead of you? Wear rubber boots.

]]> Patagonia vs North Face: Which Retailer Makes Better Outdoor Gear? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/patagonia-vs-north-face/ Mon, 02 Jan 2023 05:05:31 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=498149 Outdoor adventures are an exciting way to spend free time—and having the right gear makes those outings more enjoyable. There are several retailers selling outdoor gear, clothing and supplies. When deciding where to shop, you’ll want a brand that offers durable products made with high-quality materials. As someone who enjoys the great outdoors, you’ll also likely want to consider whether a company is environmentally-conscious.

When it comes to leading retailers of outdoor gear and clothing, two brands land at the top of any list: Patagonia and The North Face. Both brands are known for their quality goods, style and commitment to the environment.

Before you stock up for your next family camping trip, check out the perks and differences of Patagonia vs North Face.

What’s the Difference Between Patagonia and North Face?

Patagonia and North Face are quite similar in terms of the type of products they offer. If you’re looking for outdoor clothing like fleece jackets and snow boots, both brands sell comparable items.

However, when it comes to things like camping gear and bags, North Face offers a much wider product range. North Face also has a significantly larger product line when it comes to affordable, casual clothing. Patagonia, on the other hand, offers little in the way of cheaper, everyday attire and workwear.

Beyond product range, there are a few differences between Patagonia and North Face regarding brand history, pricing and repairs.

Patagonia vs North Face: Commitment to Environmentalism

Hiker admiring the Perito Moreno glacier at sunset, Argentina

If you’re looking for a brand with a long-standing commitment to the environment and sustainability, then Patagonia fits the bill. Founded in 1973, the company has always been well-regarded for its quality goods and ethics. Today, a large portion of Patagonia products are made from recycled materials, and all of their cotton is either recycled or organic.

More than half of their fabrics are also Bluesign-certified, which means they are guaranteed to be safe for the environment, its workers and their customers. Additionally, Patagonia actively invests in environmental nonprofit organizations working to preserve the planet.

On the other hand, North Face prioritized innovation ahead of other brand concerns. It wasn’t until recently they began taking actions to become more eco-friendly. Now, North Face plans for all of their apparel to be manufactured with recycled, responsibly-sourced or renewable materials by 2025. They expect the same for footwear and equipment by 2030.

Patagonia vs North Face: Repairs and Returns

In an effort to keep clothing out of landfills, Patagonia’s Worn Wear program allows you to trade-in gently worn garb in exchange for a credit toward new purchases. You can then save money by buying this pre-loved merchandise for a discount.

The Care & Repair service brings items back to like-new condition in about 12 weeks. Repairs may not look exactly like the original product based on the materials available (different color patches on clothing, for example). But we love the way the results look—they’re kind of like a badge of honor. Plus, Patagonia doesn’t charge for most repairs!

North Face’s Renewed program is a similar concept to Patagonia’s Worn Wear initiative to reduce waste. Join North Face’s Explore Pass (their rewards program), then bring in gently-used gear to any store and receive a $10 credit. They’ll refurbish items for a new life, or recycle and donate them based on their condition. The result is the Remade collection: One-of-a-kind products creatively repaired, cleaned, inspected and certified to meet North Face’s high standards.

As far as general returns, you can receive a refund on anything purchased directly from Patagonia—both new and sale items. Items should be in new condition with the tags still attached. Returns made more than one year after the purchase date receive a Patagonia merchandise credit.

On the other hand, North Face accepts returns on un-worn products (with proof of payment) online or at retail stores within 60 days of the original purchase. Returns without a receipt receive a merchandise credit at the lowest selling price of the item.

Patagonia vs North Face: Pricing

North Face tends to be slightly more affordable than Patagonia. If budget is your main concern, you’ll want to check out North Face first. Patagonia is often more expensive because of its high-quality clothing and long-lasting products made from sustainable materials.

If you’re someone who hikes just a few times a year, you may be reluctant to spend a couple hundred dollars on a jacket. However, minimalists will love Patagonia’s lightweight and packable designs—so it might be worth the investment.

North Face: Some of Our Favorite Retailer Gifts

Patagonia vs North Face: The Bottom Line

Fenix Hm65r Rechargeable 1400 Lumen Headlamp Ecomm Scheels.com

Best Overall Headlamp

Fenix Rechargeable Headlamp

According to Family Handyman’s Ethan O’Donnell, the Fenix HM65R is the nicest headlamp he’s ever used. It features two ultra-bright lights that emit up to 1,400 lumens of neutral white light. The spotlight and the flood light are independently controlled and powered by a rechargeable battery.

The magnesium alloy body weighs less than aluminum, but still resists impact. It’s also waterproof up to a depth of six feet. As a bonus, if you misplace your USB charging cord or don’t have access to an electrical outlet, the headlamp can also run off two CR123a single-use, primary batteries in a pinch.

Pros

 • Very bright beam
 • Lightweight reflective headband
 • Rechargeable and battery-powered
 • Waterproof

Cons

 • Pricey

Carhartt® Yukon Extremes® Wind Fighter® Fleece Vest Ecomm Carhartt.com

Best Overall for Men

Carhartt Yukon Extremes Fleece Vest

The wind-fighting Carhartt Yukon Extremes fleece vest tops our list as the best style overall thanks to an expansive size range and classic appeal. Made with abrasion-resistant material and a snuggly sherpa-lining for warmth on the coldest days, it layers like a dream over everything. Top your favorite tees on warmer days and then buttoned flannel shirts as the weather gets crisp. It’s thick enough to keep you warm, but thin enough to layer below bulky parkas on the most frigid days of the year.

We also love all the included safety features. Reflective details make it a workwear essential, plus inner and outer pockets store phones, tissues and work gloves with ease. Droptail hemming, easy machine washing and zippered built-in compartments prove that no detail was overlooked. This customer-favorite style comes in a classic black shade and both regular and long/tall sizes up to 3X.

Pros:

 • Most versatile design overall thanks to worksite and day-to-day wearing
 • Available in regular sizes small through 3XL
 • Tall sizes large through 2XL
 • Reflective details for added safety
 • Durable zipper closure
 • Plenty of pockets
 • Zippered compartments
 • Cozy sherpa and abrasion-resistant material combination

Cons:

 • Only available in a classic black color, but what more do you really need?

Hunt Full Cushion Tall Crew Socks Ecomm Smartwool.com

Smartwool Hunt Full Cushion Tall Crew Socks

Cushion, cushion and more cushion is our favorite feature of these thick socks, made for long days in the great outdoors or on the jobsite.

The padded sole is offset by firm support in the arch and ankle, which keeps these socks from slipping and bunching. We like the tall crew length for various boot heights, but Smartwool makes these in an over-the-calf model, too.

Klein is a big name in electrical, and the affordable Klein ET300 circuit breaker finder doesn’t disappoint.
