That’s why choosing the right look, feel and materials for your kitchen countertops is worthwhile.

Lately, a new kitchen decor trend has been taking the internet by storm—the backlit kitchen counter. Cleverly using light and the natural translucence of certain countertop materials, backlit kitchen counters are a great way to make the heart of your home both eye-catching and more useful. Especially if, like me, you enjoy nighttime snacks. Keep reading to learn about this cool trend.

What Are Backlit Kitchen Countertops?

Backlit kitchen countertops are mildly translucent countertop surfaces with flat LED light panels installed underneath. The right combination of light panels and translucent material (usually stone) creates the illusion of a countertop that glows.

Several companies make LED panels designed for installation beneath countertops, and they all work similarly. All backlit kitchen counters need some sort of substrate installed underneath to support both the counter and lights. Plywood 3/4 inch thick is an excellent choice since it’s thick enough to accommodate shallow grooves for wires to be tucked out of the way. Vertical backsplashes can also be backlit using the same method, as seen below.

What Kind of Countertop Stone Can Be Backlit?

Regardless of your decor preferences, it’s important to choose the right material for the job— one that’s translucent enough to allow lots of light through. Luckily, quite a few types of stone fit the bill: quartz, onyx, agate, marble, certain varieties of granite and others. Some man-made materials like glass and resin also make great backlit kitchen counters.

Can I Do This Project Myself?

It depends on the size of your countertop, your experience level and available tools. At the very least, you’ll need the following tools and materials:

 • Counter backlighting panels
 • Plywood
 • Table saw
 • Jigsaw
 • Caulking gun
 • Silicone
 • Drill and drill index
 • Basic wiring tools and skills
 • Countertop fastening hardware

You’ll need to be comfortable cutting the plywood to size on a table saw, and probably custom-cutting certain areas with a jigsaw.

Place your plywood substrate on top of the cabinets, then arrange your light panels on top. Use a table saw to cut 3/8 inch deep channels in the plywood as needed to route wires from the LED panels, then join the custom-sized plywood substrate to your cabinet using countertop fastening hardware.

Fasten the LED panels down with a little silicone, then route and connect the wires to the nearest handy circuit (if doing your own electrical work is permitted in your area).

For a seasoned DIYer, building your own backlit kitchen counter isn’t difficult. But if it’s your first DIY project, you’d be wise to get some experienced help.

How To Fix an Air Conditioner That’s Leaking Water Inside https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-fix-air-conditioner-leaking-water-inside/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-fix-air-conditioner-leaking-water-inside/#respond Wed, 08 Mar 2023 20:22:42 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=522939 On days when you run your car’s air conditioner, you may notice a common but unsettling sight when you pull away from your parking spot: A puddle on the pavement where your car used to be.

I tend to drive old cars, so the first time I saw the puddle, I assumed the worst — an oil leak and expensive repairs. When I checked, though, it was just water. Then I remembered the air conditioner. All ACs produce water, and your car’s just drips it onto the road.

Window air conditioners, however, feature drainage systems that direct the water outside. A faulty drainage system is usually the culprit when the unit leaks onto the windowsill or the floor.

Most of the time, you can fix drainage problems yourself. Dripping can also result from frozen evaporator coils — usually an easy fix. If you have an older unit, it may be running low on refrigerant, and recharging it might cost as much as a new air conditioner.

What Causes an AC to Leak Water Inside?

An air conditioner circulates warm air past a set of evaporator coils, which cools it. Since cool air holds less moisture than warm air, the excess condenses and turns to water. It’s basically the same process that makes rain.

Some units direct the water through a tube to the outer part of the housing. In others, the blower slings the water against the compressor to cool it. In both cases, the water eventually drips into a pan at the bottom.

If water is dripping from an AC unit indoors, the reason may be one of the following:

 • A blocked drainage tube: Dust from the air can mix with water and create an obstruction.
 • A damaged drain pan or blocked water outlet: A damaged pan produces drips in all the wrong places, and a blocked water outlet causes an overflow.
 • The drain pan tilts the wrong way: It needs to tilt toward the outside. Some window AC units give the pan this tilt when the unit is installed level. Units without this feature must be tilted during installation. If the unit wasn’t leveled properly, it’s probably been leaking since Day One.
 • A dirty air filter: This prevents air from circulating freely around the evaporator coils, and the refrigerant can’t absorb the heat. That makes the coils ice over and drip water when the unit isn’t running.
 • There’s a refrigerant leak: This can also cause the coils to ice over and drip when the unit is off. It requires professional repair.

What’s the First Thing To Do if an AC Is Leaking Water?

Turn the air conditioner off and wipe any water off the floor. Open the grille on the front and, if necessary, remove the air filter and look for ice on the evaporator coils.

If the coils are iced over, leave the unit off to melt the ice and put a bucket underneath to catch the water. If that’s not the issue, leave the air conditioner off while you troubleshoot. Better yet, unplug it.

How To Fix an AC Leaking Water Inside

Some window air conditioner fixes require access to the outdoor part of the unit. That can be challenging if it’s mounted in an upper-story window, or in a tall building. If you can’t reach it through the window, you might need to bring it inside. If you’re not up for that, call a pro.

Tools and materials

 • Kitchen sponge;
 • Screwdriver;
 • Epoxy putty;
 • Torpedo level;
 • Shims.

Clean or replace the air filter

If you see ice, cleaning or replacing the air filter may solve the problem. Most filters are cleanable.

If so, run water through it from the faucet while you scrub out the dirt with a sponge. Let the filter dry while the ice on the coils melts, then put it back in and start the unit. If the coils ice over again, call a service tech to recharge the refrigerant.

Clear the drain hole

The drain pan for a window unit has a hole in one of the outside corners, which may be plugged. To access it, pull back or remove the skirting from one side of the unit and reach through the opening. Remove any loose debris and poke a screwdriver through the hole to open it up.

Patch or replace the drain pan

If you have an older AC and you see water dripping from any part of the drain pan, the pan’s probably rusted and you may have to replace it. If there’s just one hole and you can reach it, you can try to patch it with epoxy putty.

Clean the drain tube

The drain tube leading from the evaporator coils to the outside of the housing may be blocked. Check your owner’s manual to find where this is and clean it with a long, thin object like a sewing needle.

You may need to remove the outside housing cover to do this. If the air conditioner is mounted in a high window, open the window far enough to reach the cover or take the unit indoors.

Adjust the tilt

If a newly installed window air conditioner leaks onto the floor, it’s probably not tilted enough toward the outside.

Before you adjust it, check the manual to see if the pan is installed inside the unit at the proper angle. In that case, the air conditioner should be sitting dead-level in the window. Otherwise, it should tilt downward toward the outside.

Use a torpedo level to check it. If the AC needs to tilt outward, shim up the front with thin pieces of wood or plastic until a quarter of the bubble passes the centering line.

How To Disinfect Hardwood Floors https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-disinfect-hardwood-floors/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-disinfect-hardwood-floors/#respond Wed, 08 Mar 2023 20:17:42 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=522952 We all want a germ-free home. Sometimes that’s easier said than done, especially if you have kids and pets. We diligently haul out the disinfecting sprays and wipe down kitchen countertops, bathrooms and laminate floors.

But what about hardwood floors?

“Hardwood floors can be a beautiful and durable addition to any space,” says Andrii Gurskyi, founder of the New York City maid service HomeClean. “But they can also be a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses.”

Here, Gurskyi shares his tips for disinfecting hardwood floors, gleaned from years of experience as a cleaning company owner.

Note: These tips are for finished wood floors. Never use any water or liquid cleaner on unsealed wood floors. Sealants protect wood by resisting water intrusion, and unfinished wood floors lack this layer of defense.

What’s the Difference Between Cleaning and Disinfecting Hardwood Floors?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cleaning means physically removing dirt and germs from surfaces. To do that, we scrub them with soap (or a cleaner) and water, then rinse to remove the residue.

For hardwood floors, add one last step: drying the wood surface well. Water left to pool on wood leads to warping and mold growth, particularly if it seeps into the spaces between the boards.

Disinfecting means killing or inactivating germs, not just removing them. Disinfectants feature chemicals like bleach or alcohol that disrupt the bacteria or virus, usually by destroying their cell wall or metabolic processes.

The CDC says to always clean before disinfecting. That way you remove most of the problem organisms and dirt first, so the disinfectant can work on the microorganisms left behind.

Note: There’s also sanitizing and sterilizing.

Sanitizing is the level of microbe removal between cleaning and disinfecting. Sanitizers aren’t as strong as disinfectants, but can be a worthwhile alternative to harsh chemicals if you’re looking to reduce germs. Sterilizing means to eradicate all forms of microscopic life. That’s typically done in specific circumstances, like in healthcare facilities and commercial food canning operations.

Should Hardwood Floors Be Disinfected?

It depends.

Cleaning does a good job of removing dirt and germs, according to hardwood floor experts. But when there’s an illness outbreak, or you want to target areas where kids and pets track in dirt and germs, disinfecting your hardwood floor can be a good idea. Gurskyi says it’s crucial to disinfect properly, though, because harsh chemicals and water can damage wood.

How To Disinfect Hardwood Floors

“Look for disinfectants that are specifically designed for hardwood floors, or those that are labeled safe for use on wood,” Gurskyi says. “Avoid using harsh chemicals that can damage the finish of the floor or leave streaks.”

Read the label carefully, and always test a small area to be sure the disinfectant won’t harm your floor.

Tools and materials for disinfecting hardwood floors

Sweep the floor

cleaning wooden floor with broom

“Before you begin disinfecting your hardwood floors,” Gurskyi says, “you need to make sure they are free of any dirt or debris.” Use a broom or vacuum to remove any loose dirt, dust and hair. Don’t forget to reach into all the corners and under furniture.

Dilute the disinfectant

“Most disinfectants come in concentrated form,” Gurskyi says, “which means you’ll need to dilute them before use.” Add the product to the bucket and dilute as recommended on the label.

Don’t go overboard. You won’t kill germs any better if you use more than indicated, so follow the instructions to the letter. Using too much could leave a residue on the surface of the wood — or worse, damage the finish.

Apply the disinfectant

Apply the solution to the floor with a mop for a large area, or a microfiber cloth for a small one. Wring out the mop or cloth well between passes to avoid pooling. After you’ve tested a small area, cover the entire surface of the floor with the disinfectant.

Pro tip: Clorox Disinfecting Wipes are safe for wood floors, Gurskyi says. They can be used to quickly disinfect high-traffic areas without doing the entire floor.

Allow to sit, then rinse

Disinfectants need time to work, so it’s important to allow the disinfectant to sit on the floor for the full time recommended on the product label. Then rinse the floor with clean water from a well-wrung mop or cloth.

Dry the floor

Almost done.

“Finally, use a clean, dry cloth or mop to dry the floor,” Gurskyi says. “Avoid leaving any excess moisture on the surface, as this can cause the wood to warp or cup.”

Now that your hardwood floors are clean and disinfected, keep them that way! Sweep your hardwood floors regularly, and remove shoes at the door to avoid tracking in dirt and germs.

How To Ground an Ungrounded Outlet https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/ungrounded-outlet/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/ungrounded-outlet/#respond Wed, 08 Mar 2023 20:13:22 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=521344 If your home was built before the 1960s, you might still have some old two-prong ungrounded outlets. The correct name for an ungrounded outlet is a non-grounding-type receptacle. So here, we’ll use that term.

Non-grounding-type receptacles are called that because they lack a third prong for grounding electrical equipment, appliances and tools. Grounding is important to protect against electric shocks; the third line redirects electric current during a hazardous ground-fault condition in an appliance.

Attempting to plug three-prong appliance and equipment cords into old two-prong receptacles can be a serious electrical hazard and probably violates the manufacturer’s warranty.

The National Electrical Code (NEC) generally does not apply retroactively, so you’re not obligated to replace non-grounding-type receptacles. However, if you do replace them, the new ones must be grounded to conform to the NEC.

Replacing old receptacles used to be simple. But now, like many things, it’s more complicated. The good news is, there are multiple viable options.

Grounding-Type Receptacle Replacement

Where a grounding means exists in the receptacle box, three-prong grounding-type receptacles must be installed as replacements. The green grounding terminal on the receptacle must be connected to the grounding means. The grounding means might be a grounded metal box, or a bare or green copper equipment grounding wire in the box.

With some basic testing, you should be able to determine if a grounding means exists.

Non-Grounding-Type Receptacle Replacement

Where a grounding means does NOT exist in the receptacle box, you have a few options:

Replace with another non-grounding-type receptacle

 • Non-grounding-type receptacles are still manufactured in limited quantities, so you can replace a broken one with a new one. It doesn’t enhance electrical safety, but allows you to make a necessary repair in a pinch.
 • Don’t use three-prong adapters with two-prong plugs. If not installed properly, they can be a serious safety hazard.

Replace with a ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) receptacle

 • This significantly improves safety. You won’t have a grounding means for your appliances, but the GFCI provides shock protection by tripping and stopping the flow of electricity during a ground-fault condition.
 • If you select this option, the receptacle or cover plate must be labeled “No Equipment Ground.” The labels are included in the package when you buy the GFCI receptacle.

Replace with a grounding-type receptacle

 • If you have a branch circuit with a series of daisy-chained receptacles around a room, you can install a GFCI receptacle in the first receptacle box as mentioned above, then install standard grounding-type receptacles in the downstream receptacle boxes. Say you have a branch circuit that supplies four receptacles in one bedroom, then it jumps over to supply four receptacles in another bedroom. You only need one GFCI in the first receptacle box on that circuit in the first bedroom, and seven standard receptacles in the remaining downstream boxes on that circuit.
 • The GFCI receptacle must be labeled “No Equipment Ground,” and the other downstream standard grounding-type receptacles or their cover plates must be labeled “GFCI Protected” and “No Equipment Ground.” These labels are provided by the manufacturer when you buy the GFCI receptacle.

Are There Other Code Requirements When Replacing Receptacles?

In recent years, the NEC added new rules for replacement receptacles. These are applicable to any type of existing receptacle you replace, two-prong or three-prong.

Ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection (GFCI)

GFCI technology protects people from lethal shocks. If you replace an existing two-prong or three-prong receptacle at a location that must otherwise have GFCI protection in the current NEC — say, next to your bathroom sink — you need to provide GFCI protection.

Arc-fault circuit-interrupter protection (AFCI)

AFCI technology protects people and property from fire hazards. If you replace an existing two- or three-prong receptacle at a location that must otherwise have AFCI protection in the current NEC, like in a bedroom model, you need to provide AFCI protection. Best to install an AFCI circuit breaker at your main panel.

Tamper-resistant receptacles (TR)

A tamper-resistant receptacle has built-in shutters to prevent young children from inserting foreign objects into the receptacle. When replacing existing receptacle outlets, all replacement receptacles must be tamper-resistant.

Weather-resistant receptacles (WR)

Weather-resistant receptacles feature corrosion-resistant components. When properly installed in a weatherproof enclosure, they provide extra durable protection from rain, snow, ice and moisture.

If you replace an existing receptacle at a location that otherwise requires weather-resistant receptacles in the current NEC, the replacement receptacles must be weather-resistant. So if you replace an old outdoor GFCI receptacle, then the replacement GFCI receptacle needs to be marked WR.

Will a Ventless Washer/Dryer Combo Work for You? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/ventless-washer-dryer-combo/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/ventless-washer-dryer-combo/#respond Wed, 08 Mar 2023 19:29:57 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=523114 Ventless dryers are still somewhat of a novelty in North America. But in Europe, people just call them “dryers.” They’ve been popular there since the late 1990s because they’re compact and require less energy than the “hotboxes” North Americans prefer. Combine a ventless dryer with a washing machine, and you have an energy-saving combo that fits in a closet.

Sounds like a good idea, right? Well, it depends on the size of your family and how much laundry your do, says Ron Shimek, president of Mr. Appliance, a Neighborly company.

There’s a tradeoff for the higher efficiency and energy cost savings — smaller loads and longer wait times. However, for some people, it’s a blessing.

“If you are in an older home or apartment that was not built for a dryer and therefore has no outside vent,” says Shimek, “you can use a ventless dryer instead of installing a vent into the home or apartment.”

Ventless washer dryer combos are so much more efficient than standard vented ones that at least one country — Switzerland — has prohibited vented dryers. In North America, however, we’re not there yet. Here, ventless dryers tend to have small capacities, frustrating busy people with large families.

However, given the need for higher efficiency and the phasing out of gas appliances in some places, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on new products. Manufacturers have begun providing larger units with more capacity and faster drying times.

What Is a Ventless Washer-Dryer Combo?

A ventless washer-dryer combo and a conventional one employ different technologies.

Shimek says a ventless dryer draws in cool air from the room and heats it like a vented dryer. “[But] instead of venting the humid hot air outside,” he says, “it pushes the air through a condenser loop which cools the air back down, pulling the water out of the air and draining into a storage tank.”

There’s no need for a vent because air is constantly recirculated between the tumbler compartment and the condensation chamber.

The dryer uses a refrigeration system similar an air conditioner or dehumidifier. Condensing coils in the tumbler compartment heat up the air so it can absorb moisture. Then evaporative coils in the drain area cool the air as it circulates, forcing the moisture out. The compressor driving the process uses about as much energy as a refrigerator compressor.

The washer, sharing the same compartment as the dryer, works like a conventional washing machine. It requires hot and cold water hookups and a drain shared by the dryer.

You just put in your laundry, select the wash/dry cycle appropriate for that load, and the appliance does the rest. After the washing cycle ends, the dryer starts and continues until the moisture sensor detects the clothes are dry.

A typical washer-dryer combo is a front-loading rectangular box with a capacity from 2.4 to 2.7 cubic feet, but some are larger. The GE Profile Ultrafast Combowhich won an award at the 2023 International Builders’ Show — and the Whirlpool Ventless All In One Washer Dryer both feature 4.8-cubic-foot capacity.

Ventless Washer-Dryer Combo Pros and Cons

The decision to go for a ventless washer-dryer combo isn’t a slam dunk. Although there are some obvious advantages, there are also significant drawbacks.

Pros

 • Versatility: You can install a ventless washer-dryer combo anywhere with water hookups and a 120-volt GFCI receptacle. It can go in a corner of the kitchen, an alcove in the bathroom or even a closet.
 • Energy savings: Combo washer-dryers can be plugged into a standard outlet — no need for a 240-volt circuit. They use as little as 40 percent of the energy of conventional units.
 • Convenience: Because the unit washes and dries in a single cycle, you simply load the laundry and take it out when it’s done.
 • Easy on clothes: The drier generates far less heat than a conventional one so it’s less likely to damage delicate clothing.
 • Safety: There’s no ductwork to collect flammable lint, so a ventless unit less likely to start a fire.

Cons

 • Cost: Ventless washer-dryer combos cost more than conventional ones and don’t last as long. The typical lifespan, according to Shimek, is eight to 10 years, versus 10 to 13 years for a conventional combo unit.
 • Space: Unless you go for one of the more recent models, you’ll have half the space (or less) for your clothes than with a conventional combo.
 • Longer drying times: Some units can take up to an hour longer to dry clothes than conventional dryers. Newer models reduce this to 10 or 15 minutes, but it’s still significant.
 • Humidity: Ventless washer-dryer combos can increase the humidity in the surrounding area. Shimek says that can lead to problems with mold and mildew.

Is a Ventless Washer-Dryer Combo Right for You?

A ventless washer-dryer combo could be just what you need if any of the following apply to you:

 • You live alone or with only one or two other people.
 • You live in a small space with no room for a conventional washer-dryer combo.
 • You’re renting an apartment or live in a condo without a washer or dryer, and building rules prohibit cutting a hole in the wall for a vent.
 • You don’t mind taking extra time to do the laundry.
 • Saving energy is your top priority.

The time may come when energy concerns make conventional gas and electric combo units obsolete. But it hasn’t come yet. If you do a lot of laundry, you already have vents in your laundry room and patience isn’t your defining quality, you’re probably better off with a conventional washer-dryer combo unit — for now.

This Toilet Paper Storage Hack Is Genius in Small Bathrooms https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/toilet-paper-storage-hack/ Wed, 08 Mar 2023 19:18:53 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=523249 A little strange? Maybe. Game-changing? Definitely.

]]>
About 36 percent of Americans these days rent apartments instead of owning houses, according to the Pew Research Center. And for many urban-dwelling renters, living in a small apartment means finding creative bathroom storage ideas.

Recently, TikToker Birdie Wood (@thriftyweenqueen) posted her hack for storing toilet paper in teeny-tiny bathrooms, and we’re all about it.

@thriftyweenqueen Toilet paper conspiracy explained FINALLY 😂 #thriftwithme #toiletpaper #repurposed #amazonfinds #tinyhome #storage #weird #tinyhousestorage #bathroomrenovation ♬ original sound – Birdie Wood

How to Store Toilet Paper

In the video, Wood uses a narrow, hooked towel rack. She anchors it into the wall, then places one roll of toilet paper on each hook. She says that the one rack can carry an entire package of toilet paper.

Form vs. Function

While this solution may not be as aesthetically pleasing as a pack of extra toilet paper stashed behind a cupboard, Wood doesn’t mind. “[I]t looks weird,” she says, “but the rest of my house looks weird, so I mean it’s not a big deal.”

Her viewers seem to agree. One commenter called it “usable art,” while another claimed, “Living in small spaces means function often takes precedence over form.”

Other Thrifty Storage Solutions

If this toilet paper hack is not your thing, rest assured there are numerous other ways to maximize storage space in a small bathroom.

You can also always reorganize a linen closet to make space for unsightly items, like toilet paper. Or try clearing out any jewelry cluttering your bathroom with clever display ideas. You’ll have a sparkling, space-efficient bathroom in no time.

Correct Way to Hang Toilet Paper

toilet-paper-patent

Countless households have had this debate: which way do you hang toilet paper? An 1891 patent by New York businessman Seth Wheeler, pictured above, indicates OVER. Family Handyman polled users, with 84 percent of respondents preferring this method.

These Are the Bedroom Paint Colors You Should Avoid https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bedroom-paint-colors-to-avoid/ Mon, 06 Mar 2023 19:33:06 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=521882 Your bedroom is your personal sanctuary, which is why it’s so important you select bedroom paint colors that help make it feel grounding, calm and authentic to you. Of course, that means choosing shades that feel right to you, but remember that some colors aren’t really suited for painting a bedroom.

Instead of using those shades, you can select bedroom paint colors that will help you establish the energy you seek. Nevertheless, with so many different colors, we understand how confusing it can be to select the right one. That’s why we’re here to help you learn more about the bedroom paint colors to avoid and which to pick. Whether completing a whole bedroom remodel or just repainting your walls, knowing the colors to avoid will set you on the right track.

These Are the Bedroom Paint Colors You Should Avoid

Stressed woman sits in bedroom renovation with paint mess around her in the floor

According to popular TikTok designer and interior architect Phoenix Grey (@mrphoenixgrey), certain hues aren’t the best choice for your bedroom because they won’t help you establish the vibe you want. Let’s dive right into the bedroom paint colors you should avoid.

@mrphoenixgrey Colour has so my energy, so keep that in mind as it reflects in your space #colour #bedroomcolor #interiordesign #homehacks #designertips #toronto #designhack #homeimprovement ♬ ShowTime – Hip Hop Instrumental

 • Red: Because red is so high-contrast, it adds a lot of energy to your room that isn’t conducive to creating a calming bedroom. But don’t toss out your red paint yet—if you love this color, you can still add pops in other spaces in your home, such as your bathroom or dining room. Or, if you’re committed to painting your bedroom red, Grey suggests you select a moodier, darker hue.

 • Yellow: There are many places in your home where yellow paint would shine, but it isn’t ideal for painting your bedroom. Much like red, it’s high energy and doesn’t add a mellow vibe to your room. Grey mentions that this energizing color is ideal for starting your day, but you may struggle to fall asleep in a yellow bedroom.

 • Green: While we love how green brings the outdoors inside, too much in a bedroom is, well, too much. This is especially the case, Grey warns, for light greens. If you must have green in your bedroom, go for a gem-toned shade, so you don’t sacrifice coziness—or skip it altogether.

These Are the Bedroom Colors You Should Go For

Now that you know which bedroom paint colors to avoid, let’s discuss which colors Grey believes are a better alternative. And if you really want to give your space a facelift, you can implement some of these bedroom design upgrades in addition to a fresh coat of paint.

@mrphoenixgrey Replying to @DittaStone these are my go to’s for creating a really cozy environment in the bedroom #bedroomdesign #painthack #interiordesign #homehacks #designertips #toronto #designhack #homeimprovement ♬ Luxury fashion (no vocals) – TimTaj

 • Pink: No, not bubblegum pink! Muted shades are your best friend when picking this color. One reason Grey loves pink in a bedroom is that it pairs beautifully with many different colors, plus you can easily add a visually appealing contrast.

 • Terracotta: If you want to evoke feelings of warmth and coziness with your bedroom paint colors, terracotta is the way to go. It’s basically neutral, so you have a lot of flexibility when working with this paint. Plus, it adds a sunny vibe to your room without being too overwhelming.

 • Black: If dark and moody is your vibe, look no further than black paint for your bedroom walls. While Grey warns that black bedroom paint is difficult to do right, if you succeed, you’ll have a unique sanctuary that allows you to rest and recharge. To do so, be sure to bring in other warm tones that create an intimate vibe. And don’t forget to select black paint with warm undertones for the best result.

Now that you’ve selected your bedroom paint colors, you can start getting innovative with your bedroom furniture to create a truly one-of-a-kind space that reflects you.

Finishing an attic is a great way to add an extra bedroom or an office to your home. But even if your attic isn’t well suited for that, you should still utilize it for the storage space. The key is adding shelves and other systems that can help you organize it, rather than just randomly jamming your extra stuff into attic storage.

Why It Might Be Time to Stop Using Your Vintage Corelle Dinnerware https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/stop-using-vintage-corelle-dinnerware/ Wed, 01 Mar 2023 19:45:09 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=520318 If your Corelle set is dated pre-2005, it could be better suited for display than dinner.

]]>
Nearly all of us have a set of Corelle dinnerware in the cupboard. It may have been purchased after a ’70s kitchen update, or kept on hand since the kids were born in the ’80s. (It is unbreakable, after all.) Because of that decades-long connection, it feels like a member of the family.

But that long lifespan can also work against some of these pieces. Here’s why you should use caution when eating off older Corelle dishes — and what you can do to tell whether your dinnerware is safe.

It’s a Problem with the Paint

To understand why you might want to keep retro Corelle in the cabinet, you have to understand the manufacturing process, and how it’s changed over the past several decades.

Before the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) placed regulations on how much lead could be used in tableware, plenty of companies used paints containing lead on their products. Those regulations only came into effect around 40 years ago.

If you own a set of dishes from pre-1980, there could be lead in the paint. If the paint chips, flakes off or mixes in with the food, you might consume lead along with your meal.

Needless to say, lead be especially harmful to children. There’s no safe level of lead for you, either. So while dish-related lead poisoning isn’t as serious as exposure to house paints or water, those gorgeous designs on your Corelle could make you sick.

In an email posted on Lead Safe Mama, Corelle itself recommended any dishes made prior to 2005 be used for decoration only.

Do I Need to Throw My Corelle Dishes Away?

Not necessarily. Corelle products purchased after 2005 are safe and comply with FDA regulations.

Now, if your dishes are older, that gets trickier. Avoid eating off older Corelle dinnerware if it shows obvious signs of deterioration — worn glaze, melting or chipping paint, etc.

To make sure you’re not consuming lead, avoid eating hot foods on the dishes or drinking hot beverages from any cups. And don’t put them in the microwave or store food in them for long periods.

What Else Can I Do?

How can you be absolutely sure whether Corelle is safe to serve dinner?

Lead Safe Mama tested a few Corelle pieces. If none of those patterns look like yours and you’re not sure when your set was made, buy a lead test kit. Amazon offers several options. It should be noted test kits are better at detecting high levels of lead than trace amounts.

In the end, if you’re concerned, it’s probably best to put the dishes in a display cabinet and replace them with newer, safer designs.

I Tried Slobproof Touch-Up Paint Pens From Amazon to Fix Chips in My Walls https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/touch-up-paint-pen/ Wed, 01 Mar 2023 13:07:36 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=513269 Let’s get one thing straight–I’m not a professional painter. However, the sheer number of items I’ve painted in my lifetime says otherwise (kidding). Whether it was fixing a ding in my college dorm’s wall or turning a brown bedroom dresser into a sunshine-yellow delight, painting hastily seems to be my modus operandi.

Unfortunately, painting quickly leaves walls and furniture susceptible to nicks and scratches. Luckily, touch-up paint pens save the day–and my peeling paint. One of the most popular options on the market, the Slobproof Paint Pen, is available on Amazon. This means I easily got my paws on it to test for the general population.

Best of all? Since I’m not an expert painter, my thoughts and recommendations are applicable to the average person. If I like this paint pen and think it’s simple to use, it probably is. Let’s get into it, shall we?

What is the Slobproof Touch-Up Paint Pen?

The Slobproof Touch-Up Paint Pen is a pen-like receptacle for touching up dings and scratches around your home. The upper part of the pen is made of see-through plastic, which is where your desired paint is inserted using the included syringe. On the bottom, you’ll find a small tip where the paint comes out, which is similar to that of a paint brush. To disperse paint, twist the upper part of the pen.

Besides being able to easily touch-up paint on places like walls and ceilings, the Slobproof can also be used for general arts and crafts. Need to entertain your nephew for an hour? Hand him one of these (and a piece of blank paper). If you’re lucky, you may have a masterpiece to hang on the fridge.

Slobproof Touch-Up Paint Pen Features

Although Slobproof Touch-Up Paint Pens aren’t exactly feature-rich, like the latest smart home devices, these pens still have a lot going for them. For starters, you’re able to refill these. Yes, contrary to the belief of some reviewers, you can clean, dry and reuse each of these pens. To do so, simply turn the end piece until it pops out. You’ll also need to pull the brush out of the pen (and wash it) in order to prevent unwanted color mixing.

The pens come with a plastic cap, which is designed to fit easily over the brush. This is useful for those who want to keep their paint fresh for easy touch-ups. And since the brand claims the paint stays fresh for up to seven years when properly used, you can store these with your other painting supplies.

How We Tested It

hand holding a paint pen with white paint on a wall

As someone who can’t bring items up the stairs without dinging them on the wall, I had countless opportunities to use the Slobproof Touch-Up Paint Pens. A headboard, chair rail, wall and even my ceiling were subject to my intense scrutiny and subsequent painting. In fact, I walked around my home for weeks with my eyes peeled for opportunities to use this handy painting tool. Truth be told, using this pen was so easy that I wanted to do each nook and cranny in my home, leaving no stone unpainted (er, unturned).

My excitement aside, here are the main pros and cons to be aware of prior to purchasing these touch-up pens:

Pros

 • Reasonably priced
 • Keeps paint fresh for up to seven years
 • Available in a two- or five-pack
 • Simple to use
 • Works with latex- and water-based paints
 • Useable on a variety of surfaces
 • Refillable

Cons

 • Small brush tip may not work for larger dings

FAQ

How do I fill the touch-up paint pens with paint?

Luckily, you won’t have to have the talent of a circus Houdini to fill the pen. Simply use the included syringe to dispense your desired paint into the plastic end. (Remember to hang onto any leftover paint you used to paint your home for when touch-ups are needed!)

How long will my paint stay fresh inside the pen?

According to Slobproof, paint stays fresh inside of the pen for up to seven years. However, I cannot personally speak to that, as I’ve only used the pens for a few months.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Still not sold on touch-up paint pens? You don’t have to take my word for it. Check out what other verified purchasers from Amazon really think.

“Highly recommend these touch-up pens,” writes five-star reviewer, Sarah Lynn. “Easy to use. I’ve been using them in my new construction home for around eight months now on the drywall and trim. With dogs and young children, these are a must-have to fix little spots. Love these pens.”

Amazon reviewer, Samantha W., writes, “I am IN LOVE with this product. It made touching up my house so easy before I listed it for sale. It was super easy to use and the paint blended seamlessly, it looks like there was absolutely never anything stuck into my walls. Love it, definitely a gem.”

“These are the coolest little things,” explains purchaser, L. Grimes. “The paint stays ‘fresh’ and the brush doesn’t dry out in between uses. This is literally the perfect paint pen for everyday touch-ups and scratches. You get two in a package, so you can fill them with two different paint colors to have on hand for the higher traffic rooms of the house.”

Final Verdict

Whether you own or rent your home, the Slobproof Touch-Up Paint Pens are a staple I recommend. Keep them alongside your primer, roller and paint brushes. They’re about to become your handy best friend.

O-Cedar PowerCorner Pet Pro Broom & Step-On Dustpan

O-Cedar’s PowerCorner has you covered for almost anything, and the rubber lip ensures nothing slips underneath. Learn the Anatomy of a Central Home Air Conditioner

Central home air conditioner service systems consist of two major components: a condenser that sits outside your house and the evaporator coil (often referred to as an A-coil) that sits in the plenum of your furnace or air handler. The refrigerant in the A-coil picks up the heat from your home and moves it to the outdoor condensing unit. The condensing unit fan blows outside air through the condensing coil to remove the heat. The condensing unit houses the three parts replaceable by a DIYer: the AC contactor, the start/run capacitor(s) and the condenser fan motor. The condensing unit also houses the compressor, but only a pro can replace that. The A-coil has no parts that can be serviced by a DIYer.

Over 15,000 Shoppers Use This Showerhead to Clean Their Showers (and It’s on Sale) https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/lokby-showerhead/ Tue, 28 Feb 2023 04:55:36 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=519167 Is there a chore more tedious than cleaning the bathroom? If there is, I haven’t heard of it. Using sponges and other cleaning essentials helps, but thoroughly rinsing cleaning solutions from my sink and toilet is something I’ve always struggled with. That’s why I’m picking up a Lokby showerhead (and a stone bath mat to rid myself of my soggy terrycloth bath mat once and for all).

What Is the Lokby showerhead?

The Lokby showerhead is a telephone-style showerhead like the editor-tested Moen Attract showerhead. What sets this showerhead apart is the eight available spray settings—including built-in power jets. The power jets, located on the top of the showerhead, blast away soap scum and dirt on your skin—and in your bathtub.

Why do shoppers love the Lokby showerhead?

Not only does this showerhead offer high pressure while still remaining eco-friendly thanks to a built-in flow restrictor, but it includes a whopping 57-inch hose that is capable of reaching clear across the bathroom. It’s possible to use the cleaning jet to power-wash your sink, toilet and tiles—no harsh scrubbing and chemicals required.

If your hair or skin suffers from the quality of your water, pair the Lokby showerhead with this editor-tested showerhead filter and enjoy bouncier hair and a clearer complexion. Filtered showerheads remove harsh chemicals and metals that diminish the effectiveness of your showerhead. The best part is that they’re typically compatible with any type of showerhead, including the Lokby showerhead.

Unlike other showerheads, the Lokby showerhead boasts over 15,000 reviews. Customers comment on the lightweight construction and incredible power of the built-in jets.

FAQ

Which type of showerhead is best?

The best showerhead is subjective depending on your family’s needs. It’s worth exploring different types, including LED showerheads that offer lighting in dim bathrooms and smart showerheads that pair with Bluetooth for a custom cleaning experience. Spa showerheads also exist, and they offer a relaxing experience for those who prefer to use their shower to unwind.

Will a better showerhead increase water pressure?

Some showerheads have better water pressure than others. Ultimately, for the best water pressure, ensure you clean your showerhead on a regular basis. If your showerhead becomes jammed with debris and mineral buildup, there are plenty of ways to unclog a showerhead.

If all else fails, it’s easy to replace unusable showerheads. Locate some of the best showerheads by looking at reviews and deciding what features are a dealbreaker for your family.

Do all showerheads fit any shower?

Generally, showerheads are a standard size that fit most showers, so it’s pretty simple to change your showerhead. Some specialty showers, like smart showers, may require a special showerhead to function properly. Always check the specs of your new showerhead to ensure it will fit with your shower’s setup.

Where can I buy the Lokby showerhead?

Lokby High Pressure Shower Head With Handheld Ecomm Amazon.com

The Lokby showerhead is available on Amazon for $65. Secure one for only $35 thanks to a generous 45% discount for the eight-setting chrome version. The matte black and brushed nickel colors are also available on sale for 44% off and 43% off, respectively.

How To Disinfect a Mattress https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-disinfect-a-mattress/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/how-to-disinfect-a-mattress/#respond Fri, 24 Feb 2023 22:33:24 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=518761 Whether you have a traditional innerspring, memory foam or a popular mattress-in-a-box, all mattresses get dirty. They're repositories for dead skin cells, dirt, sweat and germs. If this is news to you, it's time to clean your mattress.

But what about disinfecting? Is that possible?

"It depends on how you define disinfection," says Allen Rathey, director of the Indoor Health Council. Technically, disinfection means to kill germs on hard, nonporous surfaces, and "mattresses are too porous and thick to effectively and completely 'disinfect' in place," Rathey says.

However, if you define it more informally — say, making something more hygienic — you can do that to a mattress.

One way is to spray it with an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered disinfectant. "Some of those products will reduce germs on soft surfaces, too," Rathey says, "though not necessarily at the same level as on hard surfaces." Rathey says with this method, it's important to follow label directions. The solution needs to stay in the fibers of the mattress long enough to kill germs.

If spraying your mattress with a harsh chemical isn't for you, Leanne Stapf, chief operating officer of The Cleaning Authority, walks us through a DIY cleaning and disinfection technique that physically removes dirt, skin flakes and other food sources that germs need to thrive.

Sheets and Pillowcases

Let’s start with the basics. You need to wash your sheets and pillowcases at least once a week, according to the Sleep Foundation. However, if you have pets—and especially if they sleep with you—you should wash your sheets every few days. This will help minimize allergens, which could cause sneezing or skin irritation. We also love performing a full disinfection of our sheets.

What To Know About Grey Water https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/grey-water/ Fri, 24 Feb 2023 18:45:16 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=519182 My first house was a cabin in the mountains with a septic tank so old I constantly worried about it failing. So I installed a grey water system with the hopes of prolonging its life.

It worked. And if I had trees, bushes and flowers to water, it would have been twice as useful. Plant watering is the main reason why more homeowners are looking into installing grey water systems.

“What a waste it is to flush toilets with such a precious resource as clean drinking water,” says Lauren Anderson, academy director at Earthship Biotecture in New Mexico.

Earthship’s headquarters, in the desert, only gets around seven inches of rain a year. But all the houses in that neighborhood have such sophisticated rain capture and grey water systems that residents grow their own produce and rarely need supplemental water from wells.

For those of us in standard houses, installing a grey water system can still make a big difference. Households can reuse around two-thirds of their indoor water on outdoor irrigation. Considering outdoor use makes up between 30% and 70% of our water bills, that can save money, plus upwards of 40,000 gallons of water a year.

What Is Grey Water?

Cropped Image Of Person Washing Hands

Grey water is wastewater from showers, baths, washing machines and bathroom sinks. It should not be confused with black water, aka wastewater from the toilet. Some states consider water from kitchen sinks and dishwashers to be black water, while others don’t.

Regardless of where you live, kitchen water contains higher levels of grease and organic material than other sources of grey water.

What Can You Use Grey Water For?

Grey water is most commonly used for outdoor irrigation.

“Simple systems take unfiltered grey water and distribute it to larger plants, like trees and bushes,” says Laura Allen, the cofounder of Greywater Action. Her group teaches people how to design and install grey water irrigation systems.

Other types of systems filter the water so it can be distributed by a special drip irrigation system. More complex systems can filter the water to flush toilets.

Is Grey Water Dangerous?

No. With basic health and safety precautions, grey water is safe to use.

Because it could carry bacteria and viruses and chemicals left over from your laundry, you should never drink it, or allow anyone to touch it. Don’t use it on root vegetables, and don’t let it touch the edible portion of any food plant. It should also never be sprayed or allowed to pool up, run off the property or run too close to a waterway.

What Is a Grey Water System?

One that allows you to direct grey water to the landscape or toilet for reuse, back to a septic tank, or down the city water drain.

Some grey water systems rely on gravity to move the water outside. Others employ a small tank with a pump inside to push water uphill or across a flat landscape. Many systems use a natural mulch filter in the landscape to catch hair and debris before the water soaks into the soil. Others feature an external filter you must clean by hand.

“The system is a pass through,” says Remy Sabiani, owner of Water Wise Group. “You’re going to take a shower and pretty much at the same time you’re going to water your plants. You’re going to do a load of laundry, and pretty much at the same time you’re going to water your plants.”

The best way to save water with this system? “Figure out how much grey water your home produces,” says Allen. “Then, determine how much water your plants need so you can properly irrigate them.”

Can You DIY a Grey Water System?

Yes. If you have basic plumbing and landscaping skills, you can install a simple “laundry-to-landscape” type system. This taps into water directly from the washing machine and without altering the plumbing of your home. The materials cost around $300.

Some water agencies offer incentives to offset the cost for this system. Other systems warrant more plumbing skills, and some require a professional installer.

Also, you’ll need to research state, county and city regulations, because the legality of grey water systems varies. It often depends on the type of system, where it’s installed (home or business) and the volume of water that passes through it.

Also, keep in mind you’re typically not allowed to store grey water for more than 24 hours. You should avoid products high in salt or containing Boron. Organizations like Greywater Action provide info on what soaps are safe for your plants and how to install a grey water system.

How to Use Dryer Sheets to Clean Toilets in No Time Flat https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-use-dryer-sheets-to-clean-toilets-in-no-time-flat/ Fri, 24 Feb 2023 18:39:04 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=519646 Thanks to TikTok, it seems like there’s a cleaning hack for practically every part of your house. As someone who wants to do the least amount of work possible for spotless results, I’m a huge fan! Now I use lemons to clean my cutting boards, and dishwasher tablets to clean the oven.

For my next trick, I’ll show you how to clean a toilet with a dryer sheet. It’s one of many dryer sheet uses that aren’t laundry.

How to Use Dryer Sheets to Clean Toilets

If you’ve got long hair, you know it can get stuck in that small crevice between the toilet bowl and the tank. While it’s not a spot we touch every day, it’s still nice to keep it sparkling clean. Especially when we worked so hard to get the rest of the bathroom looking gorgeous!

Pick up dust and hair

Lucky for us, TikTok user @amandakaysheppard presents the hack we didn’t know we needed. All you need is a normal dryer sheet.

Run it over any part of your toilet with unwanted dust, hair or debris. The sheet picks up all that loose stuff in a flash. No more going back two or three times while your towel or cloth pushes it around.

@amandakaysheppard If you’re not using a dryer sheet on your toilet before cleaning it … you’re doing it wrong! #cleantok #dryersheet #fyp ♬ original sound – TheWadeEmpire

Remove the “toilet ring”

If you want to get the most out of your dryer sheets (and we know you do), use them to scrub the inside of your toilet.

We’ve all seen those unsightly rings in toilets that just won’t go away, no matter what products you use. So pull on a pair of rubber gloves, grab your sheet and get scrubbing! The gentle woven fibers of the sheet don’t scratch the toilet while the fabric softener eliminates stains. It really is an all-in-one.

New HVAC System Cost: How Much Is It? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/new-hvac-system-cost/ Fri, 24 Feb 2023 16:48:33 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=518839 The HVAC system plays the essential role of keeping a house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Replacing one is a major investment, so many homeowners let it slide for longer than they should.

That’s often a penny-wise but dollar-foolish decision for two reasons. Homeowners end up paying more for repairs in the long run than a replacement would cost, and also waste money on inefficient heating and cooling.

Tim David, the CEO of Airlucent.com and an HVAC pro with more than 25 years of experience, says upgraded energy efficiency requirements from the Department of Energy are making new HVAC systems more expensive. “Consumers … should expect slightly higher costs for equipment, but better efficiency on their energy bills,” he says.

Still, HVAC system replacement is often more cost-effective than repairing an outdated system. It’s like spending thousands keeping your 20-year-old clunker on the road versus buying a modern, fuel-efficient vehicle.

According to HomeAdvisor, the national average cost for installing a new HVAC system is around $7,000, but that depends on several factors. Here are some tips to determine your costs for a new HVAC system.

Factors That Determine the Cost of HVAC System Replacement

The cost of HVAC replacement depends on where you live and the nature of the system (furnace vs. heat pump). It could range from $3,000 to $10,000. David says it costs about $3,000 to install a new electric furnace, and $5,000 to $8,000 to install a new heat pump.

“With the subsidies now in place for upgrading your home to be more energy efficient, you can claim up to $2,000 as a write-off,” says David. “And if you upgrade your insulation/windows, that could be another $1,200.”

It should be noted the $2,000 subsidy applies only to heat pumps. It’s part of the federal government’s move toward electric home heating methods.

If you already have a gas furnace and it makes sense to continue using gas, replacing your furnace will range from $3,800 to $10,000, or slightly higher if you opt for a high-efficiency model. If you heat your home with oil, furnace replacement will run between $6,750 and $10,000. These costs are determined by:

 • The brand of equipment;
 • The size of your home’
 • Your climate zone;
 • The local cost of labor.

Signs That It’s Time for a New HVAC System

David says it’s time for replacement when your system is at least 15 years old, and you have to call out an HVAC tech at least once a year for three consecutive years.

Both conditions indicate the system is functioning at a lower efficiency it should, wasting energy and money. David also notes if a single repair approaches 50% of the cost of a new system, you should just replace it.

“Most likely, something major is going on,” says David. “And if you don’t replace the whole thing, then you could be adding unnecessary stress to other older parts that don’t get replaced.”

DIY vs. Hiring Pros

It’s technically possible for a homeowner to DIY an HVAC installation, but David doesn’t recommend it. “HVAC systems are complex, require permits and specialized tools, and involve safety hazards,” he says. “Improper installation can result in poor performance, higher energy bills, and safety hazards for homeowners and their families.”

Another problem with DIY installation: It may void the product warranty. Most HVAC parts manufacturers require installation by licensed HVAC contractors for the warranty to be valid.

“Even if you have the necessary skills, although you will be able to save on labor costs, DIY installation can result in unforeseen additional costs due to mistakes, safety hazards, and the need to hire a professional to fix any issues that arise,” says David.

Questions To Ask HVAC Contractors

With government subsidies for HVAC upgrades now in effect, an HVAC contractor is the best person to advise you on how to take advantage of them. You can ask questions like:

 • Is my home a good candidate for a heat pump?
 • I want to continue using gas. Is it worth it to upgrade to a high-efficiency furnace?
 • Will it make any difference to my comfort level and energy bill if I spend more money for a system with a higher efficiency rating than the minimum required?
 • Will this HVAC replacement involve any changes to other components of the system, including the air handler and ductwork?

Of course, before hiring any contractor, always verify licensing and how long they’ve been in business. To avoid overcharging or substandard service, it’s also a good idea to check references and reviews on social media.

5 of the Most Common Appliance Mistakes https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/most-common-appliance-mistakes/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/most-common-appliance-mistakes/#respond Fri, 24 Feb 2023 15:43:46 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=listicle&p=518891

Overloading the Washing Machine With Heavy Items

This is one of the most common and expensive appliance mistakes. It often results in a worn out rear bearing or a broken spider bracket. When that happens, you’ll need a new washer. It’s a $700 to $1,500 mistake.

To prevent it:

 • Avoid washing bathroom mats. They absorb too much water, and the weight stresses the motor.
 • Avoid washing weighted blankets. They destroy your washer faster than any other item.
 • Avoid washing rugs, dog blankets, sleeping bags, comforters and all other bulky items. Like mats and weighted blankets, they’re heavy when wet and will quickly cause trouble.

How to Incorporate the Fluted Wall Panels Into Your Home https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/fluted-wall-panels/ Thu, 23 Feb 2023 21:51:23 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=518824 For many of us, the phrase “wood paneling” conjures up cringy flashbacks to belted Volvos and creaky backwoods cabins—not so chic. But wood paneling is making a major comeback in the design world, thanks to its new fluted reimagining. The resulting trend is a stunning, organic play on light and shadow, adding warmth and texture to any interior space. If you’re looking for a low-cost, high-impact way to add character to your walls, look no further!

What Are Fluted Wall Panels?

Basically, fluted wall panels are a wall covering made up of a series of pieces of wood, hung either vertically or horizontally. The wood can be natural, composite, or synthetic, but its key feature is its “fluting,” or the concave carving of the wood. It can make up an entire wall, or just a segment, making it a space-conscious, tasteful alternative to traditional wood paneling.

What Are the Benefits of Fluted Wall Panels?

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, flute wood paneling has many benefits:

 • Eco-friendliness: Because fluted wood paneling rarely covers an entire space and can be made of composite, it is typically a greener option for your house than traditional paneling.
 • Low maintenance: Fluted wood paneling can be easily wiped down with a cloth and installation is a snap. (Yes, you should be cleaning your walls, too!)
 • Immune to pests: If made of synthetic or composite, fluted wood panels can’t be harmed by termites like traditional wood.
 • Water- and mold-resistant: Much like with pests, water does not pose a threat to synthetic materials. And with no water, there’s no mold, meaning that this design choice can easily be incorporated into humid spaces like kitchens or bathrooms.
 • Ages gracefully: Fluted wood panels are durable, meaning that they’ll last for years to come without needing to be replaced.

How Can I Add Fluted Wall Panels to my House?

Chroma Living Mahogany Fluted Wall Panel Via Merchant

There are numerous different ways to incorporate the gorgeous fluted wood paneling trend into your home. Find three of our favorites below.

Frame Your Television

One of the most intuitive ways to add fluted wood paneling is as an alternative media center. Where one might opt for a classic cabinet to support a standing television, hanging TVs look dramatic against a fluted backdrop.

Emphasize Your Favorite Furniture

Whether you adore your upscale bed or want to bring out the color of your couch, fluted wood paneling can help draw the eye to a special space. A textured wall can act as a pseudo-headboard in the master bedroom. In the living room, horizontal fluted wood panels lend an air of luxury, like an upscale hotel!

Add an Accent Wall

Finally, keep it simple with a classic accent wall. Instead of testing out new paint, lean into natural materials and organic textures. We particularly love how they add warmth to a bathroom, especially when paired with soft, amber lighting.
