Green hedge of thuja trees

Arborvitae

One of the most popular screening plants, arborvitae is a thickly adorned evergreen that comes in a range of shapes, from dwarf globes of just one to two feet all the way up to 30-foot upright giants. Although shorter arborvitae are commonly used as foundation plants, taller ones serve as screens and hedges, providing plenty of privacy.

Arborvitae are tough, hardy plants that can withstand drought once established. Unfortunately, they’re susceptible to winter burn, i.e. desiccation due to drying winter winds. And deer and rabbits will eat up the lower portions during difficult winters. Wrapping in burlap or applying an anti-desiccant spray will help the former, while temporary fencing should alleviate the latter.

How To Disinfect Hardwood Floors https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-disinfect-hardwood-floors/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-disinfect-hardwood-floors/#respond Wed, 08 Mar 2023 20:17:42 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=522952 We all want a germ-free home. Sometimes that’s easier said than done, especially if you have kids and pets. We diligently haul out the disinfecting sprays and wipe down kitchen countertops, bathrooms and laminate floors.

But what about hardwood floors?

“Hardwood floors can be a beautiful and durable addition to any space,” says Andrii Gurskyi, founder of the New York City maid service HomeClean. “But they can also be a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses.”

Here, Gurskyi shares his tips for disinfecting hardwood floors, gleaned from years of experience as a cleaning company owner.

Note: These tips are for finished wood floors. Never use any water or liquid cleaner on unsealed wood floors. Sealants protect wood by resisting water intrusion, and unfinished wood floors lack this layer of defense.

What’s the Difference Between Cleaning and Disinfecting Hardwood Floors?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cleaning means physically removing dirt and germs from surfaces. To do that, we scrub them with soap (or a cleaner) and water, then rinse to remove the residue.

For hardwood floors, add one last step: drying the wood surface well. Water left to pool on wood leads to warping and mold growth, particularly if it seeps into the spaces between the boards.

Disinfecting means killing or inactivating germs, not just removing them. Disinfectants feature chemicals like bleach or alcohol that disrupt the bacteria or virus, usually by destroying their cell wall or metabolic processes.

The CDC says to always clean before disinfecting. That way you remove most of the problem organisms and dirt first, so the disinfectant can work on the microorganisms left behind.

Note: There’s also sanitizing and sterilizing.

Sanitizing is the level of microbe removal between cleaning and disinfecting. Sanitizers aren’t as strong as disinfectants, but can be a worthwhile alternative to harsh chemicals if you’re looking to reduce germs. Sterilizing means to eradicate all forms of microscopic life. That’s typically done in specific circumstances, like in healthcare facilities and commercial food canning operations.

Should Hardwood Floors Be Disinfected?

It depends.

Cleaning does a good job of removing dirt and germs, according to hardwood floor experts. But when there’s an illness outbreak, or you want to target areas where kids and pets track in dirt and germs, disinfecting your hardwood floor can be a good idea. Gurskyi says it’s crucial to disinfect properly, though, because harsh chemicals and water can damage wood.

How To Disinfect Hardwood Floors

“Look for disinfectants that are specifically designed for hardwood floors, or those that are labeled safe for use on wood,” Gurskyi says. “Avoid using harsh chemicals that can damage the finish of the floor or leave streaks.”

Read the label carefully, and always test a small area to be sure the disinfectant won’t harm your floor.

Tools and materials for disinfecting hardwood floors

Sweep the floor

cleaning wooden floor with broom

“Before you begin disinfecting your hardwood floors,” Gurskyi says, “you need to make sure they are free of any dirt or debris.” Use a broom or vacuum to remove any loose dirt, dust and hair. Don’t forget to reach into all the corners and under furniture.

Dilute the disinfectant

“Most disinfectants come in concentrated form,” Gurskyi says, “which means you’ll need to dilute them before use.” Add the product to the bucket and dilute as recommended on the label.

Don’t go overboard. You won’t kill germs any better if you use more than indicated, so follow the instructions to the letter. Using too much could leave a residue on the surface of the wood — or worse, damage the finish.

Apply the disinfectant

Apply the solution to the floor with a mop for a large area, or a microfiber cloth for a small one. Wring out the mop or cloth well between passes to avoid pooling. After you’ve tested a small area, cover the entire surface of the floor with the disinfectant.

Pro tip: Clorox Disinfecting Wipes are safe for wood floors, Gurskyi says. They can be used to quickly disinfect high-traffic areas without doing the entire floor.

Allow to sit, then rinse

Disinfectants need time to work, so it’s important to allow the disinfectant to sit on the floor for the full time recommended on the product label. Then rinse the floor with clean water from a well-wrung mop or cloth.

Dry the floor

Almost done.

“Finally, use a clean, dry cloth or mop to dry the floor,” Gurskyi says. “Avoid leaving any excess moisture on the surface, as this can cause the wood to warp or cup.”

Now that your hardwood floors are clean and disinfected, keep them that way! Sweep your hardwood floors regularly, and remove shoes at the door to avoid tracking in dirt and germs.

These Are the Bedroom Paint Colors You Should Avoid https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bedroom-paint-colors-to-avoid/ Mon, 06 Mar 2023 19:33:06 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=521882 Your bedroom is your personal sanctuary, which is why it’s so important you select bedroom paint colors that help make it feel grounding, calm and authentic to you. Of course, that means choosing shades that feel right to you, but remember that some colors aren’t really suited for painting a bedroom.

Instead of using those shades, you can select bedroom paint colors that will help you establish the energy you seek. Nevertheless, with so many different colors, we understand how confusing it can be to select the right one. That’s why we’re here to help you learn more about the bedroom paint colors to avoid and which to pick. Whether completing a whole bedroom remodel or just repainting your walls, knowing the colors to avoid will set you on the right track.

These Are the Bedroom Paint Colors You Should Avoid

Stressed woman sits in bedroom renovation with paint mess around her in the floor

According to popular TikTok designer and interior architect Phoenix Grey (@mrphoenixgrey), certain hues aren’t the best choice for your bedroom because they won’t help you establish the vibe you want. Let’s dive right into the bedroom paint colors you should avoid.

@mrphoenixgrey Colour has so my energy, so keep that in mind as it reflects in your space #colour #bedroomcolor #interiordesign #homehacks #designertips #toronto #designhack #homeimprovement ♬ ShowTime – Hip Hop Instrumental

  • Red: Because red is so high-contrast, it adds a lot of energy to your room that isn’t conducive to creating a calming bedroom. But don’t toss out your red paint yet—if you love this color, you can still add pops in other spaces in your home, such as your bathroom or dining room. Or, if you’re committed to painting your bedroom red, Grey suggests you select a moodier, darker hue.

  • Yellow: There are many places in your home where yellow paint would shine, but it isn’t ideal for painting your bedroom. Much like red, it’s high energy and doesn’t add a mellow vibe to your room. Grey mentions that this energizing color is ideal for starting your day, but you may struggle to fall asleep in a yellow bedroom.

  • Green: While we love how green brings the outdoors inside, too much in a bedroom is, well, too much. This is especially the case, Grey warns, for light greens. If you must have green in your bedroom, go for a gem-toned shade, so you don’t sacrifice coziness—or skip it altogether.

These Are the Bedroom Colors You Should Go For

Now that you know which bedroom paint colors to avoid, let’s discuss which colors Grey believes are a better alternative. And if you really want to give your space a facelift, you can implement some of these bedroom design upgrades in addition to a fresh coat of paint.

@mrphoenixgrey Replying to @DittaStone these are my go to’s for creating a really cozy environment in the bedroom #bedroomdesign #painthack #interiordesign #homehacks #designertips #toronto #designhack #homeimprovement ♬ Luxury fashion (no vocals) – TimTaj

  • Pink: No, not bubblegum pink! Muted shades are your best friend when picking this color. One reason Grey loves pink in a bedroom is that it pairs beautifully with many different colors, plus you can easily add a visually appealing contrast.

  • Terracotta: If you want to evoke feelings of warmth and coziness with your bedroom paint colors, terracotta is the way to go. It’s basically neutral, so you have a lot of flexibility when working with this paint. Plus, it adds a sunny vibe to your room without being too overwhelming.

  • Black: If dark and moody is your vibe, look no further than black paint for your bedroom walls. While Grey warns that black bedroom paint is difficult to do right, if you succeed, you’ll have a unique sanctuary that allows you to rest and recharge. To do so, be sure to bring in other warm tones that create an intimate vibe. And don’t forget to select black paint with warm undertones for the best result.

Now that you’ve selected your bedroom paint colors, you can start getting innovative with your bedroom furniture to create a truly one-of-a-kind space that reflects you.

How To Deal With the Grooves When Painting Wood Paneling https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/painting-wood-paneling/ Mon, 06 Mar 2023 19:29:18 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=522535 I still remember the basement of our Midwestern home. My parents bought the house nearly new in the early 1970s, when wood paneling was all the rage — it covered all four walls of the basement. At the time, it was right in style. Four decades later, that paneling might be long gone.

But ripping out wood paneling isn’t the only option for that dark heavy wall covering. Wood paneling can be painted. It’s a less messy, less costly option than removing it and dealing with whatever material you find underneath.

Yet nothing’s that simple, right? To erase the dated look of paneling, you’ll need to deal with the telltale grooves that give away what’s lurking underneath. We called on an expert to help.

How To Cover the Grooves in Paneling

We asked Jeff Shipwash, who fixes and flips houses through his Knoxville, Tennessee-based business, Shipwash Properties, how his team deals with wood paneling during renovations.

“We actually encounter many homes that still boast wood paneling within,” says Shipwash. “In the past, we would rip it out, or modify it to make it appear more modern.” But if you want to keep the paneling and make it appear more like drywall, he says, “Prep work is critical in order to make sure you get a great finish.”

Step 1: Fill the grooves with joint compound

Shipwash says his team usually starts by filling in the groves with a quality joint compound, aka drywall mud or joint mud. He recommends USG joint compound. You’ll also need a putty knife.

“This step is only necessary if you desire the finished product to look more like [drywall] and less like paneling,” Shipwash says. “In my opinion, you need to fill in the grooves with at least two coats of drywall mud.” Also, sand between coats.

If you hire a contractor for the job, Shipwash says the cost will vary by the project size. “The average we spend per day on a drywall crew is around $1,000,” he says. “This is for a crew of two or three experienced contractors. I have seen a few solo contractors that bill around $400 to $500 per day.”

Step 2: Sand the entire wall

Once your two coats are complete, sand down the entire wall with fine grit sandpaper, ideally in the 180- to 220-grit range.

“This will do two things,” says Shipwash. “First, it will level the joint mud level with the rest of the wall. Second, it will scuff the paneling to allow paint and primer to better adhere and avoid chipping.”

After sanding, clean the walls with a damp sponge or rag.

Step 3: Add primer and paint

Next, apply a high-quality bonding primer. An oil-based primer works best. But if you don’t want to deal with the odor and the clean-up, opt for a stain-blocking latex primer instead.

Two coats of primer is ideal. You might get by with one coat if you’re painting with a darker color. Once the walls are primed to your satisfaction, Shipwash says, “you’re ready to paint the paneling to any color you desire.”

Note that in this article on painting wood paneling, our pro recommends an oil-based primer and paint, applied with a paint sprayer for the smoothest finish. That method calls for a lot of ventilation, equipment and clean-up. Water-based paints and primers will work, but applying them with a brush or roller won’t achieve the seamless look of a paint sprayer.

Is it Time to Rethink That Paneling?

Filling in paneling grooves with joint compound may be doable, but it’s labor-intensive for a DIYer.

“If you’re hiring a contractor to give your walls more of a [drywall] look, I honestly recommend just having them replace the paneling entirely,” Shipwash says. “This will result in about the same amount of labor time and the finished product will be better.”

Plus, maybe you shouldn’t be so quick to get rid of those grooves. “As a flipper,” says Shipwash, “I have noticed the trend of paneling to be coming back in style.” He says that many homeowners like to leave a wall of paneling as an accent to complement the surrounding, non-paneled walls.

“If you enjoy the look of the paneling but hate the color, skip the mudding step and go straight to cleaning, priming and painting.” he says. Or just clean the wood paneling and usher in a retro trend!

Which Natural Weed Killers Will Work Best for You? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/earth-friendly-weed-killers/ Mon, 06 Mar 2023 19:24:37 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=521268 Undoubtedly you’ve read or heard reports about the toxic chemicals in herbicides and their long-term effects on us and the environment. As a result, environmentally friendly products with active ingredients like vinegar, salt, soap and essential oils are gaining in popularity.

With more organic weed killers hitting the market every growing season, I chatted with an expert about what they are and how they work.

Meet The Expert

Heather Johnson Headshot Bw

Heather Johnson is the lead horticulturist at Bachman’s Floral and Garden in Minneapolis, Minn., where she specializes in diagnosing and managing plant diseases in everything from turf to pine trees.

She discovered her love of gardening at a young age, which led her to a degree in plant biology from the University of Minnesota and a master’s in plant pathology from the University of California-Davis. Johnson says even in her spare time, she’s consumed by plants. “I currently have over 100 houseplants and spend a little time every day tending to them,” she says.

Choosing The Right Herbicide

Crabgrass Ground Ivy And Dandelion

Whatever the time of year or the conditions,  you can treat unwanted weeds or grass in environmentally friendly ways — from preemergent to post-emergent, selective and nonselective varieties. But read labels and choose products with care.

“A lot of the organic options are burn-down herbicides, meaning the roots will remain intact and be able to regrow new shoots later,” Johnson says. “[And] salt and vinegar can remain in the soil after killing the intended weeds, which can affect the growth of wanted plants in the area later on.”

To choose what’s best for your lawn or garden, Johnson suggests you start by answering these questions:

What Type of Weeds Are You Trying To Remove?

Common weeds Johnson say most homeowners struggle to control are dandelions, creeping Charlie and crabgrass. The first two are broadleaf weeds. “If your lawn is overrun with these, it’s more likely that the health of the lawn is being impacted, and lawn care besides just weed removal needs to be done,” Johnson said.

The crabgrass problem is so widespread that companies have developed entire lines of herbicides to eliminate it. Though toxic, these can be effective when used correctly. However, Johnson says, “same as with other weeds, if your lawn is overrun with crabgrass, then there are other health issues that need to be addressed.”

How Many Weeds Are You Targeting?

In cases where weeds haven’t overtaken the lawn or appeared in large clusters, Johnson prefers hand weeding with a tool. “It allows me to dig up the entire weed without the potential of damaging the lawn,” she says.

On the other hand, if the whole lawn is overrun with weeds, she suggests “reseeding along with testing the soil to understand the health of the grass and what nutrients may be needed to amend it.”

When Are You Applying the Weed Killer?

“Some weeds are best handled preemergence, and some weeds are best handled post-emergence,” says Johnson. “Crabgrass can be handled pre- or post-emergence, with the most effective time being preemergence, in April or May, to avoid harming the lawn.”

Broadleaf weeds are best handled post-emergence, she says, “as long as it’s before they flower and spread.”

Earth-Friendly Weed Killers Worth Checking Out

Espoma Weed Preventer Plus Lawn Food

Espoma Organic Weed Preventer Lawn Food For All Grasses Ecomm Acehardware.com

Espoma Organic Weed Preventer Plus Lawn Food is the best environmentally friendly product for established lawns. It’s made of pure corn gluten meal, so it’s safe for children and pets to play on even immediately after application.

Besides inhibiting weed growth, this product also feeds the lawn, ensuring it stays green and healthy. Johnson says organic and preemergent lawn products are “typically a fertilizer or germination inhibitor that won’t kill already established grass but will prevent any new plants from germinating.”

For best results, apply the Espoma Organic Weed Preventer twice a year, once in early spring and again in early fall.

Green Gobbler 20% Vinegar Weed Killer

Fh23apr 624 55 M02 1

Green Gobbler 20% Vinegar Weed Killer is a potent, nonselective vinegar-based product. It’s made from ethanol distilled from corn grain and a concentrated vinegar containing four times the acetic acid of traditional household vinegar.

Biodegradable and nontoxic, this Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) certified formula will safely remove all types of weeds from driveways, sidewalks and mulch beds.

Most environmentally friendly weed killers must be sprayed directly on a growing weed so the active ingredients are absorbed. Johnson suggests using “nonselective sprays such as this in an isolated area, where it’s easy to target individual weeds.”

Make Your Own All Natural Weed Killer

A mixture of vinegar, salt and dish soap can be an effective spot treatment for weeds, according to Johnson. Concentrated vinegar works because it’s stronger than the household variety, usually at near 20% acetic acid.

The salt and acetic acid present in vinegar cause unwanted plants to dehydrate, wither and die. And the dish soap enhances the effectiveness by breaking down the plant’s outer layer (cuticle).

Mix one gallon of vinegar, one ounce of dish soap and one cup of salt in a plastic bottle and spray directly on weeds. Apply the mixture on a sunny day with no wind. Because vinegar-based products are nonselective weed killers, they will harm nearby plants if you don’t spray carefully. “If used in small amounts, this shouldn’t affect the soil long term,” Johnson said.

Eliminating Weeds Without Weed Killers

Gettyimages 494007787 Nicola Tree

If you’re still feeling uneasy about using any weed killer, environmentally friendly or not, other means are available to do the job.

Try pouring boiling water on sidewalk, driveway or patio weeds. The water scalds the unwanted weed, and any runoff will cool on the impervious surface before it reaches other plants.

To eradicate weeds from nonflammable areas like cracks in sidewalks and gravel driveways, a propane torch is another effective alternative. Weeds growing on dry or combustible materials should never be torched. Nor should poison ivy or other poisonous plants because their smoke can cause serious allergic reactions.

For large areas of your yard, or between rows of vegetables in your planter boxes, consider solarizing or smothering the soil.

To solarize, place a transparent plastic tarp over the soil. The tarp prevents water absorption while heating the soil and ultimately killing all vegetation. To smother, place layers of newspaper or old shower curtains on the soil to block the sun and moisture.

One of the most effective ways to maintain a weed-free lawn is by following a lawn care schedule. Johnson recommends keeping a lawn calendar that outlines when to do each maintenance task, like mowing, fertilizing and thatching.

“Following those tips and hand-removing weeds when they are present is a good way to mitigate weeds without the use of any chemicals,” she says. If your lawn is more than 50% weeds, Johnson said it’s best to reseed the whole lawn.

Reporting for Duty: The Cub Cadet Riding Mower Makes Lawn Care Easy https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/cub-cadet-riding-mower/ Fri, 03 Mar 2023 19:04:57 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=518329 Thinking about purchasing a new riding mower to achieve all your lush lawn dreams? While John Deere is a typical go-to brand for riding mowers, a Cub Cadet Riding Mower should be on your list of selections to consider.

Not only does Cub Cadet offer excellent quality machines at great price points, but they also carry both electric and gas-powered mowers. Cub Cadet’s gas-powered riding mowers are powerful enough for those with large yards and fields. On the other hand, electric Cub Cadet Riding Mowers offer a battery-powered function, which means a quieter ride with zero emissions.

To decide on the best option, consider the area you’ll need to cover and the cost of gas versus electricity. Regardless of the version you choose, Cub Cadet mowers come with a best-in-class three-year, unlimited-hour warranty.

What is a Cub Cadet Riding Mower?

Cub Cadet is an American company that manufactures and sells outdoor power equipment, including riding mowers. Currently, there are three Cub Cadet Riding Mowers types: lawn and garden tractors, zero-turn mowers and electric riding mowers.

Lawn and garden tractors are the highest-powered versions of riding mowers that Cub Cadet offers. They’re best for larger areas and come with various attachments and accessories for year-round versatility and utility.

Zero-turn riding mowers allow users to get mowing jobs done 50% faster and are engineered to handle a range of terrains. They can cover up to five acres, with steering wheel options that make the user experience easier.

Electric riding mowers offer the same powerful performance with zero emissions, thanks to a powerful and convenient lithium-ion battery. The absence of a gas engine makes these machines some of the quietest on the market.

How to Use a Cub Cadet Riding Mower

Cub Cadet Riding Mowers come in gas and electric versions, meaning you will either need to charge the batteries or fill the tank with gas before using it for the first time. Electric model batteries are fully charged in four hours and last up to one and a half hours or up to two acres. On average, gas-powered Cub Cadet Riding Mowers use about three gallons of gas for every 2 hours of use.

As with any new machinery, it’s essential to  thoroughly read the user manual before use. To help you learn how to use your Cub Cadet riding mower, we recommend viewing the instructional videos and troubleshooting tips on the Cub Cadet website.

Here are the stats on some of their most popular models that will help you decide which machine is right for your job:

Five-star reviewer Clark R. says assembly of his Cub Cadet XT1 Enduro Gas Powered Riding Lawn Mower was “straightforward and painless.”

“After checking all fluids, pins, etc, some gas and fired right up,” he writes. “What use to take over an hour with the old 30 inch cutter now takes 20 minutes with far less gas consumption.”

J. Blair is on his second Cub Cadet Riding Mower (a CC30E Electric Mini Riding Mower) and says, “Cub Cadet never has disappointed. This is my second cub cadet tractor, and I believe there isn’t a better one out there.”

When it comes to using the electric version, Maeck Dude says, “The Cub [CC30E Electric] mini is amazing. It mows like a champ, even the thick stuff. The mulcher works like a charm, and the electric motor is easy to clean and lasts over an hour. I would highly recommend it for towing stuff as well. It will not mow steep hills and tends to want to slide on a steep slope but it’s really a marvel I’m so impressed with the quality of the machine.”

The Eleven Percent: Meet D’ondra Howard, Furniture Maker https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/the-eleven-percent-meet-dondra-howard-furniture-maker/ Fri, 03 Mar 2023 16:57:45 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=521656 This FH series spotlights the women and nonbinary tradespeople who make up 11 percent of the construction workforce in America. Know someone we should feature? Email us here.

D’ondra Howard had no background in the trades when she made her first piece of furniture. She just enjoyed learning to build things for her family’s home. But her furniture projects soon piled up and eventually no longer fit into the house. That’s when she decided to try to sell one on Facebook Marketplace.

“I put a fluted table on there and people went crazy for it,” Howard says. “I realized I could really sell them because people liked them so much.”

In 2021, she decided to make custom furniture crafting a career and started Workboots & Glasses out of her garage in Sacramento, Cal. Today, she makes everything from dining tables and desks to platform beds and charcuterie boards.

Howard still sells some on Facebook, but the rest are custom creations she builds in her garage workshop. Thanks to her ever-growing reputation for quality and creative designs, most of her sales come via word of mouth. She also showcases her work on Instagram.

We asked Howard for her thoughts on the state of the woodworking industry.

Q: What made you start DIYing and building furniture?

A: My husband joined the military and I didn’t want to be miserable without him at home, so I made my home my canvas.

At first I loved putting together IKEA furniture. I took pictures of the kids and put them on the wall. Then I bought rugs, refurbished our outdated furniture and even flipped some of it. It was fun, and I realized I wanted to do more than just paint.

I eventually wanted to get rid of the IKEA furniture and build nice pieces for the house. But the power tools scared me, so at first I didn’t try.

Q: How did you get over that fear of power tools?

A: One night a woman’s DIY Instagram popped up on my feed, Our Nest on Powell. I watched her videos into the middle of the night. She was using DIY to help cope with the death of her sister. She inspired me so much that the next morning I went to get the materials to build a sofa table.

I had no idea what I was doing, and it was the worst sofa table ever. But once I realized what my downfall was, I had to try to make something else. So I built a console table. Then I built a workbench. A storage cabinet. A club chair. And every day after, I just kept building, because I enjoyed it so much.

I also learned that all I need to do is to cover my ears when I use the table saw, so I don’t jump every time.

Dondra's Wood Table

Q: What’s it like being a woman in furniture-making?

A: So far, I haven’t had any jerks or anything. When I’m at building stores, I see the same people over and over because I’m constantly getting supplies. They’re curious and they strike up conversations, asking me what I’m making this time. So that’s always cool.

But when some men see a woman making something, they feel the need to explain or tell me what I should be doing because they think their way is better. Guys? Don’t do that. Don’t say, “You should do this,” or “This tool is better.”

I would prefer if you ask a question, like “Hey, why don’t you use this instead?” Then I can be like, “Shoot, I didn’t even know I could do that. Thank you for the tip.” There are many ways to do things; many tools the get the same end result. So please ask a question, don’t just tell.

Q: What changes would you like to see in the trade?

A: It kind of goes back to what I was just saying about asking versus telling. I hope that we can all bump elbows and not judge based off how we do things differently.

Nobody in this world is the same. We may do some things similarly, but there’s still a twist. You may rub a circle and I may swish or swirl. You may use the specific brand of finish that you like, and I might not use the same brand, but it’s still going to look nice in the end.

So I hope we just welcome everybody’s differences and make room at the table for everybody. Even if we learn differently or understand differently, we’re still ultimately doing the same thing.

Q: What’s your advice for young women considering entering the trades?

A: Do it. You have to just start. Put yourself out there.

If you realize you don’t like it after you’ve tried it, you can move on to something different. But if you just sit there hoping and wishing and expecting something to happen without putting in the time or the work to learn, you’re never going to be able to get good enough to enjoy it, or even to just say, “I tried this.”

Also, don’t be too hard on yourself. We all have to start somewhere, and how we get better is by doing.

Q: What are your pro-specific tools?

Dondra3 Wood Shelves

A: My Ryobi drill is my right hand, and I have a couple of them so I don’t always have to be changing out bit sizes.

Another tool I use often is my brad nailer. My five-in-one tool is good for opening up cans of paint, prying pieces of wood and getting a nail or a screw unstuck. Of course I need my circular saw with a track to cut straight lines. Then a cloth, because I need some type of cloth to finish or stain, and then to get that stuff off of my hands.

For clothing, I’m a fan of Dovetail, because it fits me the way I’m supposed to. I especially like their overalls and flannel workshirt. I had been wearing Dickies and I was just being swallowed in them. I also just became a brand ambassador for Timberland and Truewerk. I especially like Truewerk’s work pants and performance shirts, and Timberland’s pro hoodie.

D’ondra Howard Bio

When D’ondra Howard discovered a passion for furniture, she overcame her fear of power tools to become a furniture maker, woodworker and DIY professional. She sells her custom furniture creations through her company Workboots & Glasses. She’s also a consultant on Matriarchy Build, an online consultation platform connecting women and LGBTQ experts with people needing advice on DIY projects.

Howard confidently builds benches, TV consoles, Murphy beds and more. She especially enjoys designing and building tables.

Power King Chipper Shredder: A Beast of a Chipper https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/power-king-chipper-shredder/ Wed, 01 Mar 2023 14:49:51 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=517666 A top-performing product with five-star reviews, the Power King Chipper eats brush for lunch. The Power King Chipper is royalty when it comes to residential wood chippers, as this beast devours five-inch branches without a hiccup.

Owning a wood chipper will save you time and money and make tree care easier in the long haul. Why wait to hire someone expensive when you could do it yourself?

What is the Power King Chipper Shredder Kit?

Power King Chipper Shredder Kit

It’s no wonder owners call this powerful chipper a beast. The Power King Chipper boasts an impressive 14-horsepower, four-cycle Kohler engine. Plus, the heavy-duty blades can demolish lengthy limbs without incident.

With its large hopper, you can feed this hungry beast with ease. We also love the rotating shoot, which puts the finely shredded mulch wherever you want.

Perfect for homeowners with heavily-wooded or large properties, the Power King can roam your jungle (er, yard) for its next meal. This machine is easily towable with an all-terrain vehicle or small tractor.

The Power King Chipper Kit includes an extendable wheelbase, a removable tool-free tow bar, a weatherproof cover and extra blades. Power King also offers a similar model with an electric start, but it is hundreds of dollars more.

Pros

  • Easy recoil start
  • 360-degree rotating exit shoot
  • Removable tow bar
  • Extended axle
  • Comes with extra blades
  • Weatherproof cover included
  • 14 horsepower engine
  • 3-year engine warranty

Cons

  • Cannot be towed on the road

How to Use the Power King Chipper

Safety first, please. Grab your goggles and gloves—this is a powerful machine. Place the chipper on a flat surface and adjust the exit shoot to direct the output of the pulverized material. Then, simply feed the branches with the large diameter side first. When the beast begins to chew, let go of the branch, as auto-feed should kick in.

It will be greedy for more, but don’t stuff it too full. Make sure to allow it to chew before adding additional material. With a little practice, feeding your beast will become your favorite chore. For more information, we recommend referring to the user guide for in-depth start up and maintenance procedures.

The Best Power King Chipper Reviews

Home Depot customer, David says, “A workhorse. Took care of everything I threw in it and then some from storm damage on 8+ acres. Towed great using the wide wheel base set up. Set up was easy but a second set of hands is needed. Solid piece of equipment.”

Ed Abel gave the Power King five stars, “Much Better than Hoped! I was hesitant to start with 2″ thick branches; I incorrectly assumed that the chipper must at least stall if the entire branch were tossed in. Whoa! It’s gone without any hesitation. At first I held onto, and slowly fed, the Juniper branches thinking that they would stall and jam the blades. The machine told me to “let go”; so I did and the chips flew out the chute. Again, no stall nor jam. Soon the 3″ and 4″ limbs were being chewed up and spit out. I could relax, ‘feed the machine’, and watch the brush pile disappear. Satisfied.”

BigDibbs echoes many user reviews, “This chipper is a beast, easy to put together and operate. I use a hand dolly with a hitch to move it around by hand and it is easy. Well balanced and easy to maneuver around. Shredded two large trees in one afternoon. Not designed for shredding smaller items but does chop it up a bit, though it prefers larger branches.”

I Tried Slobproof Touch-Up Paint Pens From Amazon to Fix Chips in My Walls https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/touch-up-paint-pen/ Wed, 01 Mar 2023 13:07:36 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=513269 Let’s get one thing straight–I’m not a professional painter. However, the sheer number of items I’ve painted in my lifetime says otherwise (kidding). Whether it was fixing a ding in my college dorm’s wall or turning a brown bedroom dresser into a sunshine-yellow delight, painting hastily seems to be my modus operandi.

Unfortunately, painting quickly leaves walls and furniture susceptible to nicks and scratches. Luckily, touch-up paint pens save the day–and my peeling paint. One of the most popular options on the market, the Slobproof Paint Pen, is available on Amazon. This means I easily got my paws on it to test for the general population.

Best of all? Since I’m not an expert painter, my thoughts and recommendations are applicable to the average person. If I like this paint pen and think it’s simple to use, it probably is. Let’s get into it, shall we?

What is the Slobproof Touch-Up Paint Pen?

The Slobproof Touch-Up Paint Pen is a pen-like receptacle for touching up dings and scratches around your home. The upper part of the pen is made of see-through plastic, which is where your desired paint is inserted using the included syringe. On the bottom, you’ll find a small tip where the paint comes out, which is similar to that of a paint brush. To disperse paint, twist the upper part of the pen.

Besides being able to easily touch-up paint on places like walls and ceilings, the Slobproof can also be used for general arts and crafts. Need to entertain your nephew for an hour? Hand him one of these (and a piece of blank paper). If you’re lucky, you may have a masterpiece to hang on the fridge.

Slobproof Touch-Up Paint Pen Features

Although Slobproof Touch-Up Paint Pens aren’t exactly feature-rich, like the latest smart home devices, these pens still have a lot going for them. For starters, you’re able to refill these. Yes, contrary to the belief of some reviewers, you can clean, dry and reuse each of these pens. To do so, simply turn the end piece until it pops out. You’ll also need to pull the brush out of the pen (and wash it) in order to prevent unwanted color mixing.

The pens come with a plastic cap, which is designed to fit easily over the brush. This is useful for those who want to keep their paint fresh for easy touch-ups. And since the brand claims the paint stays fresh for up to seven years when properly used, you can store these with your other painting supplies.

How We Tested It

hand holding a paint pen with white paint on a wall

As someone who can’t bring items up the stairs without dinging them on the wall, I had countless opportunities to use the Slobproof Touch-Up Paint Pens. A headboard, chair rail, wall and even my ceiling were subject to my intense scrutiny and subsequent painting. In fact, I walked around my home for weeks with my eyes peeled for opportunities to use this handy painting tool. Truth be told, using this pen was so easy that I wanted to do each nook and cranny in my home, leaving no stone unpainted (er, unturned).

My excitement aside, here are the main pros and cons to be aware of prior to purchasing these touch-up pens:

Pros

  • Reasonably priced
  • Keeps paint fresh for up to seven years
  • Available in a two- or five-pack
  • Simple to use
  • Works with latex- and water-based paints
  • Useable on a variety of surfaces
  • Refillable

Cons

  • Small brush tip may not work for larger dings

FAQ

How do I fill the touch-up paint pens with paint?

Luckily, you won’t have to have the talent of a circus Houdini to fill the pen. Simply use the included syringe to dispense your desired paint into the plastic end. (Remember to hang onto any leftover paint you used to paint your home for when touch-ups are needed!)

How long will my paint stay fresh inside the pen?

According to Slobproof, paint stays fresh inside of the pen for up to seven years. However, I cannot personally speak to that, as I’ve only used the pens for a few months.

What Other Reviewers Had to Say

Still not sold on touch-up paint pens? You don’t have to take my word for it. Check out what other verified purchasers from Amazon really think.

“Highly recommend these touch-up pens,” writes five-star reviewer, Sarah Lynn. “Easy to use. I’ve been using them in my new construction home for around eight months now on the drywall and trim. With dogs and young children, these are a must-have to fix little spots. Love these pens.”

Amazon reviewer, Samantha W., writes, “I am IN LOVE with this product. It made touching up my house so easy before I listed it for sale. It was super easy to use and the paint blended seamlessly, it looks like there was absolutely never anything stuck into my walls. Love it, definitely a gem.”

“These are the coolest little things,” explains purchaser, L. Grimes. “The paint stays ‘fresh’ and the brush doesn’t dry out in between uses. This is literally the perfect paint pen for everyday touch-ups and scratches. You get two in a package, so you can fill them with two different paint colors to have on hand for the higher traffic rooms of the house.”

Final Verdict

Whether you own or rent your home, the Slobproof Touch-Up Paint Pens are a staple I recommend. Keep them alongside your primer, roller and paint brushes. They’re about to become your handy best friend.

To bring calming sound to your backyard, I’ve designed this sleek backyard water feature using a simple box for a reservoir, a pump and basic plumbing parts to keep the water flowing. It can be disassembled easily and tucked away for the winter or moved around your patio. I dressed mine up with ipe hardwood and a sheet of copper to wrap the reservoir.

You can take these ideas and build a modified version to fit your favorite place to relax.

Over 15,000 Shoppers Use This Showerhead to Clean Their Showers (and It’s on Sale) https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/lokby-showerhead/ Tue, 28 Feb 2023 04:55:36 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=519167 Is there a chore more tedious than cleaning the bathroom? If there is, I haven’t heard of it. Using sponges and other cleaning essentials helps, but thoroughly rinsing cleaning solutions from my sink and toilet is something I’ve always struggled with. That’s why I’m picking up a Lokby showerhead (and a stone bath mat to rid myself of my soggy terrycloth bath mat once and for all).

What Is the Lokby showerhead?

The Lokby showerhead is a telephone-style showerhead like the editor-tested Moen Attract showerhead. What sets this showerhead apart is the eight available spray settings—including built-in power jets. The power jets, located on the top of the showerhead, blast away soap scum and dirt on your skin—and in your bathtub.

Why do shoppers love the Lokby showerhead?

Not only does this showerhead offer high pressure while still remaining eco-friendly thanks to a built-in flow restrictor, but it includes a whopping 57-inch hose that is capable of reaching clear across the bathroom. It’s possible to use the cleaning jet to power-wash your sink, toilet and tiles—no harsh scrubbing and chemicals required.

If your hair or skin suffers from the quality of your water, pair the Lokby showerhead with this editor-tested showerhead filter and enjoy bouncier hair and a clearer complexion. Filtered showerheads remove harsh chemicals and metals that diminish the effectiveness of your showerhead. The best part is that they’re typically compatible with any type of showerhead, including the Lokby showerhead.

Unlike other showerheads, the Lokby showerhead boasts over 15,000 reviews. Customers comment on the lightweight construction and incredible power of the built-in jets.

FAQ

Which type of showerhead is best?

The best showerhead is subjective depending on your family’s needs. It’s worth exploring different types, including LED showerheads that offer lighting in dim bathrooms and smart showerheads that pair with Bluetooth for a custom cleaning experience. Spa showerheads also exist, and they offer a relaxing experience for those who prefer to use their shower to unwind.

Will a better showerhead increase water pressure?

Some showerheads have better water pressure than others. Ultimately, for the best water pressure, ensure you clean your showerhead on a regular basis. If your showerhead becomes jammed with debris and mineral buildup, there are plenty of ways to unclog a showerhead.

If all else fails, it’s easy to replace unusable showerheads. Locate some of the best showerheads by looking at reviews and deciding what features are a dealbreaker for your family.

Do all showerheads fit any shower?

Generally, showerheads are a standard size that fit most showers, so it’s pretty simple to change your showerhead. Some specialty showers, like smart showers, may require a special showerhead to function properly. Always check the specs of your new showerhead to ensure it will fit with your shower’s setup.

Where can I buy the Lokby showerhead?

Lokby High Pressure Shower Head With Handheld Ecomm Amazon.com

With the help of this potato stamp wall art tutorial, you can easily use this veggie sitting in your pantry to transform your space. It’s quick, simple and efficient. Here’s what you need to know to get started with this potato stamp wall art hack.

How to Create Potato Stamp Wall Art

Not even the most skilled interior designers expected potato stamp wall art to take off when predicting paint trends over the next decade. Still, we’re here for it! Ready to tackle potato stamp wall art? Here’s how to make this process as seamless as possible.

Even when you paint with a potato, it’s crucial to properly prep for interior painting. By doing this, you can rest assured you’ll have the perfect paint job when you’re all done. Make sure you prep the wall beforehand, too—check out these tips for indoor painting.

For starters, be sure you protect your furniture by covering it. Remove any light or outlet covers, and cover the floor. Then, you can start with patching to fix any trouble spots on your wall. Then, gently clean the surface of your wall to remove any unwanted substances. To wrap up your prep, make sure you’re protecting your trim.

Once you’ve completed these steps, you can begin making your potato stamp wall art. This video from TikTok creator @indie.boho.nest demonstrates the process beautifully:

@indie.boho.nest What produce should i try next? #fyp #fixerupperhouse #decorhacks #paintedwall #diywallart #diywallpaper #viralditiktok #homegoals #accentwall #diyersofinstagram ♬ Oh my God. – Quinny👍

To do it yourself:

  • Grab a potato from your pantry.
  • Cut it in half.
  • Cut an ‘X’ shape into the exposed part of the potato.
  • Use a knife to remove the excess pieces.
  • Grab some paint.
  • Dip your potato stencil into the paint to create a potato wall art stamp.
  • Apply it to your wall to create the desired pattern.

And that’s it! We love how this adds visual interest and texture to the wall. And if you’re open to trying something new aside from traditional sponge painting, this is a fun twist.

Can You Use Other Vegetables for Wall Art?

While we haven’t seen other creators getting crafty with other vegetables, you can add your spin on this trend by using different foods to create a wall stamp. For instance, if you want to create an accent wall in your kitchen and want a food-inspired print, you can halve an apple, remove the seeds and dip it into the paint to use as a stamp.

Save the Hassle And Your Trim with the Bucket Edge https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bucket-edge/ Wed, 15 Feb 2023 15:25:55 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=511592 One of the most nerve-wracking parts of interior painting is ensuring nothing drips onto your trim or the floor. Sure, you can put masking or painter’s tape anywhere you don’t want paint, but that sucks up so much time you could spend painting. Enter the Bucket Edge, a heavy-duty painting guard that leaves trim and other surfaces untouched while painting.

What is the Bucket Edge?

The Bucket Edge is a piece of heavy-duty aluminum that sits over your trim or other surfaces that you don’t want to get paint on. Unlike masking tape, it takes seconds—not minutes—to set up, and there’s zero risk of paint seeping through.

You can also use this painting tool to cut and mark straight lines, remove bubbles from wallpaper and scrape ceilings. That’s not all: it replaces your dustpan and is even useable as a funnel in a pinch.

Shop Now

How to Use the Bucket Edge

Simply place the Bucket Edge over the area you’re trying to protect and start painting. It comes in three sizes (12, 20, and 40 inches), so there’s no job too big or too small. The three sizes nest together for easy storage.

To use it as a dustpan, turn it upside down and sweep all the debris onto the flat surface. Pick it up and use the funneled ends to ensure every last bit goes into your trash bag—not all over your floors.

The Best Bucket Edge Reviews

Five-star reviewer Jimmy has been a house painter since the 1990s, and writes that this is one of the most useful tools in his arsenal. “I absolutely hated painting before I found this tool. Why? I hate taping off a room and it cuts into my labor costs…These are well put together, and the edges are not flimsy. I have 2 more sets on the way!”

“The Bucket Edge tools are awesome! I bought them after we purchased a new home,” reviewer Jennifer Mccabe explained. “They worked great to paint the entire home. No doubt they saved us tons of time not having to tape off nearly as much and we didn’t need to tarp off floors. My husband loves the Bucket Edge and will continue to use them in his construction and remodeling business.”

“This tool has been amazing,” customer Justin remarks. “I will never paint without them and definitely recommend this product. Saves a tremendous amount of time as well as money spent on tape. It has been useful on every job so far which is impressive.”

There are three different sized available at Walmart. The 12-inch is great for small projects, like painting furniture or window sashes. The 40-inch is ideal for large jobs. And if you’re a professional—or have a lot of DIY painting projects in your future—it’s worth investing in the Bucket Edge three-piece set that includes 12-, 20- and 40-inch models. If you ask us, it’s worth the price to never worry about paint dripping on our trim.

The 7 Best Dust Collector Machines for Woodworking https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/best-dust-collector/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/best-dust-collector/#respond Mon, 13 Feb 2023 19:29:32 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=listicle&p=512839

Jet Vortex Cone Dust Collector

Best Overall

Jet Vortex Cone Dust Collector

The Jet Vortex Cone is quite popular, as evidenced by its stellar dust collection reviews. But what gives it an edge over the others? A two-horsepower motor, and vortex cone technology that guarantees continuous, systematic air movement. This feature allows for better chip separation, less clogging of the filter and increased packing efficiency of the collector bag.

It takes a single-stage design approach, adding the separation efficiency of a two-stage dust collection system while still keeping the operation quiet. This machine also features a fully enclosed, fan-cooled two-horsepower motor with continuous duty, meaning there’s more than enough horsepower to make sure you’re getting efficient air movement.

The Jet Vortex boasts a collection capacity of 5.3 cubic feet, and the 1,200 cfm (cubic feet per minute) stands up to its competitors. Collection bags have a sewn-in snap ring for fast and easy installation and removal. Its dual four-inch dust ports allow you to connect two machines at the same time—perfect for any workshop.

Pros

  • Fan-cooled motor enables continuous usage
  • Quick connect bag system
  • Strong steel construction
  • Four swivel casters

Cons

  • Bulky
  • On the heavier side

The “mortise” is the recess where the tenon goes. It can be cut by hand with a mallet and mortising chisel, or mechanically with a mortising machine and a hollow chisel bit. If you don’t have those tools, a mortise can also be made with a drill press and bench chisel.

Adjustable Moving Straps

Moving and lifting straps (“hump straps”) make lifting heavy furniture and other objects easier on your back by relying on stronger muscle groups like your legs and shoulders. They also leave your hands free to maneuver awkward items like mattresses. However, they can be tricky to use on stairs because the weight shifts completely to the downhill mover.

Look for moving straps that can be adjusted for different length objects as well as for different-sized movers. Be careful not to trip on any slack from the straps.

Sherwin-Williams CEO Forecasts Plummet in Paint Demand in 2023 https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/sherwin-williams-ceo-forecasts-plummet-in-paint-demand-in-2023/ Thu, 09 Feb 2023 18:07:48 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=513741 A cooling housing market as a result of increased mortgage rates, inflation, supply shortages and other variables have impacted numerous sectors across home building. That includes the top paint manufacturers.

Sherwin-Williams’s Outlook

Sherwin-Williams CEO John G. Morikis announced during a company earnings call in late January the company expects a “very meaningful deceleration of demand” for their paint products.

“We will not be immune from what we expect to be a very challenging demand environment in 2023,” Morikis said. “Visibility beyond our first half of the year is limited. On the architectural side, U.S. housing will be under significant pressure this year. Slowing existing home sales and continued high inflation also will be headwinds.

“On the industrial side, we have already seen a slowdown in Europe, and the same is beginning to appear in the U.S. across several sectors. In China, COVID remains a factor and the trajectory of economic recovery is difficult to map.”

Morikis has been the CEO of the Cleveland-based company since 2016.

Sherwin-Williams’ stock price plummeted nearly nine percent after the company’s earnings reports, from $247.09 a share to $225.06 by the end of the day. It has since rebounded roughly five percent and was trading at $235.51 when the markets closed on Feb. 8.

According to Natalie Lung of Yahoo, existing home sales have declined year-over-over for 16 consecutive months. Coupled with increased mortgage rates, new residential volume “could decline 10%-20% this year,” she writes.

“(Sherwin-Williams) is focusing on investing, adding stores and growing the market share of its residential repaint business — its largest and fastest growing segment, which includes paints and coatings for inside and outside the home — saying that factors such as home-price appreciation and aging housing stock can help offset the impact from slowing existing home sales.”

Shifting Housing Market

Surging mortgage rates hit record lows in 2021 but increased dramatically in a span of 12 months.

Interest rate increases have major ramifications on mortgage payments. A 30-year fixed-rate loan at three percent on a $400,000 home with a 20 percent down payment, or $80,000, would cost roughly $1,350 per month for principal and interest. A six percent loan for that same home would cost $1,900 a month. That’s a difference of $550 a month.

Bankrate reported December 2022 was the 11th consecutive month with declining home sales. The median home price in the U.S. reached a record high $413,800 in June, but has since retreated to $366,900, according to Bankrate.

Last week, National Association of Home Builders chief economist Rob Dietz said at a press briefing at the International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas that a “recession is underway” for home builders, according to Construction Dive.

“We’ve never had a period where home prices have declined and there has not been a recession,” Dietz was quoted as saying. “I think the rest of the economy will feel it in 2023 via slowing economic output and rising job losses.”
